Below is a message that I sent to Meijer in regards to their over-reach on the sale of alcohol: The look over 40 policy and the scanning of i.d. at point of sale.

Hello Meijer,

Your store looses its appeal quickly when I'm treated like a 15 year old trying to buy booze with a fake i.d.

At my age, not over 21, but I'm over 55 years, to have someone not sell me a beer is simply outrageous. And what is this over age 40 policy? Law to purchase alcohol in Michigan is 21. Period! But Meijer instead of being customer service oriented, you've introduced ambiguity and a lack of intelligence. And at the forefront of this policy are associates that have no idea, thanks to Meijer's sans service environment, on how to treat and respect customers, so much so, that they take on the form of a MEIJER NATZI. Refusing to sell! What do you think that that conversation at the moment of sale looks like? Its hideous and ugly. Not only do I have a (some times young) associate not selling to me because I don't look what, in their minds eye, is over 40, their also refusing to sell because I'm not allowing them to scan my i.d. (I don't want people unnecessarily touching my i.d.). This is over-reach! And I will not stand for it!

The law is simple - not younger than 21 years of age. No scanning of i.d.s, no having to look over 40.

I hope people find other options than Meijer, to purchase their alcohol from, I know that I will.

I've copied Meijer's obligations to the consumer below.

Michigan Law:

(STATE CONSTITUTION (EXCERPT)

CONSTITUTION OF MICHIGAN OF 1963. § 40 Alcoholic beverages; age requirement; liquor control commission; excise tax; local option.

Sec. 40. A person shall not sell or give any alcoholic beverage to any person who has not reached the age of 21 years. A person who has not reached the age of 21 years shall not possess any alcoholic beverage for the purpose of personal consumption. )

As ever,

Michelle Schoemer

Desired outcome: For people to be aware of the over-reach and not to support stores that insist on scanning of i.d. at point of sale and the look over 40 to sell. The look over 40 policy instantly segways to no sale. Michigan law is not younger than 21.
