I put Sargeants Flea Control on our 2 cats in an effort to save some money. About an hour later our male cat began having severe seizures and was foaming at the mouth. I gave him a bath with shampoo to get the stuff off him. His condition only worsened. He was on the floor in uncontrollable seizures. He died in my arms after hours of pain and suffering. If I owned a gun, I would have used it to end his suffering. A soon as our female cat exhibited the symptons, I immediately bathed her with dishwashing soap. After 24 hours of mild shaking and lethargy, she made a full recovery. I only wish I had responded to the male cat sooner. Maybe he would have survived. The experience was heartbreaking for my entire family. I will never use another Sergeants product again. This crap needs to be taken off the shelves.

Something needs to be done about this company. I just had to take my moms cat to be put down because of the severe liver damage, due to using seargents flea and tick shampoo. She hasnt sleep in two weeks because she feels that she had killed her cat. Its really messed up when you take your animal into the vet and they tell you that, ya that seargents shampoo does severe liver damage to older cats and it happens all the time. This has been the worse two weeks watching the cat wither away trying to drink water and not able to because of the burns on her throat and mouth prevented her from doing so. I am so angry that my moms best friend of 14 years is dead over something that should not be on the shelves...

I just put the Sargeants Gold on my morkie (4.5 lbs.) and my maltese (8.0lbs.) and within one hour both my dogs were drooling and moving around non-stop. Both dogs lost so much fluid that they soaked my comforter which is very thick. I immediately washed both dogs in dog shampoo and force fed them water all night through an empty syringe. I came very close to losing both my animals. I, too, am without a job and I am disabled. This might not have happened if I could have afforded a vet. The fact that this company KNOWS how many animals have been killed or hurt is disgusting. There should be a law prohibiting them from selling this stuff. I will tell everyone I know about this. And I pray for God to help all of you who have lost an animal with this product. My thoughts are with you all.

This stuff is nothing short of poison! My 11 month old puggle is now in severe pain and miserly only 12 hours after giving him Sareants Gold 9-20lbs. His back legs are twitching, he's obviously nervous and lethargic and just not himself. I've bathed him twice with regular shampoo for humans to take this poison out of his coat. He's still grabbing at his shoulder blades and his bottom where I applied the tube. I feel horrible. He's still eating and drinking and I'm nursing him through the next 48 hours praying he'll improve. Here's a tip: smell your dog where you applied the "poison". If you can still smell it, continue to bathe them every 12 hours. I will never buy any medication over the counter for my puggle again! If your reading this, I hope it's not too late for your family pet. After reading these posts for hours, it seems that your best bet is to wash your dog repeatedly and pray. If your dog or cat is seizing, seek medical attention immediately. It could mean liver or kidney failure.

We unfortuntaly have experienced the same reactions from this horrible chemical, our loving house cat was scratching and since it was between paydays we picked up sargents gold thinking this will be a good stop gap until we could afford the good stuff. We applied drops around noon and went down for a nice afternoon nap. When I came out of the bedroom, found him unresponsive and tremors through out his body, quick dash to vet for a wash, IV, muscle relaxer and 250 dollars later he seems to be recovering. We are currently in the waiting stage to verify that once the muscle relaxers wear off he is okay. We will be urging everyone we know that this is a horrible product and needs to be taken off the shelves immediately!

We bathed our new cats (one is 18 months and the other amost 7 months) in Sergeant's SKIP-FLEA Flea & Tick Shampoo for Cats and Kittens last Friday - August 6th .. We just rescued them a week prior and were asked to wait a whole week before bathing them due to recent spaying and neutering ... He'd not cooperated very well during the rinse process and so there was some of the shampoo just was not rinsed completely off. I did find it strange that he did not dry himself at all -- he'd just let himself airdry. Well, the older and larger one had no visible symptoms while the younger one became very lethargic and had a runny nose. He just laid around, so I put some food and water in small containters and took them to him. He ate and drank his water with no problems ... soon after he got up for more. I did not connect all this together. Somehow though, he smelled so bad, so here I go and bathed him again today ... this time I rinsed him very well ... He was not happy with me at all! Again, he didn't dry himself ... just air-dried. He was not a happy camper .. did not like me much at all ... He was himself today ... but, we noticed that he has a lot of saliva, and continues to have a runny nose.

I will be returning the Sergeant's shampoo! And, will NOT use that mess EVER again!

Thanks to all who participate here with our accounts!

We just picked up our Chihuahua (5.9 pounds) from the vet... She may live? We have to watch for seizures for the next 48 hours. She received shots steroids and benadryl shots to reveres the reaction she had from the Sergeants flea medicine. Her lips and eyes are dark red, she is swollen around her neck, she whimpered all night, she is shaking her head uncontrollably... Needless to say - I think she was better with the fleas!

I dont get it. We have two cats. We used the flea medicine on their neck. One cat was fine but the other cat I guess wasnt. He hasnt been shaking or anything like in your other cases but hes been lazy, and just different I guess. I dont think he has the energy to move. And check this out, the first cat had it on longer then the second. My bet on all these cases is that the cats are allergic. We are scared the second cat might die. Were calling the vet tomarrow. So we dont have a conclusion to our problem yet. What should we do?

We used Seargeants SILVER brand (for smaller dogs) and our dog had a very bad reaction. As described above, he was itching out of his skin. We took him to emergency for sedative but two days later he still wasn't himself and we put him on a course of prednisone.

The reason I am commenting is that I read everything possible on this subject but nowhere does anybody specifically say that EVENTUALLY the dog is okay. It took 6 days! We thought there was going to be permant neurological damage. The little guy just couldn't stop itching and spinning around chasing his tail. He chewed a hole through his back end and we've had to keep him in an Elizabethan collar all week to avoid further chewing.

Just to let you know, they do eventually get better! Yikes, what a scare.

Stealth Pilot - Not sure why I'm addressing you, as you have a long history of antagonizing people on this board (800+ comments, 1 complaint - about people on the board), but...

My problem with Sergeant's has to do with the labeling and listing of the risks. If they want to register a snide domain - lookatthelabel.com - that's their right. But to condescendingly tell customers to read the label, when the label only addresses a few of the side affects (and downplay the others) is irresponsible. Yes, pet owners need to take responsibility for what they put on/in their pets - this is a pesticide. So is Advantage, and we've never had a problem with it (nor with Frontline). I've just returned from the vet and was told that they see this all too often. The chief complaint of DVMs is that Sergeant's and Sentry package and market their product in similar ways to the better products. Supposedly, the chemical ingredients are the same as the old flea powders - they've just been re-formulated to look like the spot treatments that actually work (and don't hurt nearly as many pets).

As for treatment - continue to bathe with Dawn (3x daily) and dose with childrens Benadryl (1/2tsp 2x daily for our 9lb pup).

Oh, and on the idea of being no different that signing a waiver - ummm, I didn't sign a waiver; all side effects were not disclosed. Take your surly, condescending, better-than-thou attitude, and SHOVE IT.

I wish I would have found this site sooner. Our 7 lb chihuahua mix had an awful time after applying Sergeant's Gold flea/tick control. I read the label, and was aware of the warning signs of ingestion (excessive salivation and/or foaming at the mouth). He was itching within a few hours of treatment, and became very "drooly." As the label directed, we fed him and kept an eye on him. Though he continued to scratch, the drooling ceased. Our plan was to keep an eye on him in case the drooling returned, or the scratching got worse. Neither happened - the scratching continued through the night, but seemed to get slightly better.

However, by morning (15 hours since application) he is still itchy, and is obviously uncomfortable. We've given him a bath and that seems to have helped some.

I understand that not all dogs will have an adverse reaction. What gets me is that the company is taking such a blatant protect our image approach. I mean, the first response to this post is some outside PR firm, pushing their site: http://www.lookatthelabel.com. First, what a terribly condescending domain name. Second, I checked out the site - hoping to get info direct from the manufacturer. All I see is spin such as this:

from the Ingestion, drooling or foaming at the mouth section (under Recognizing and responding to reactions for dogs)

...One thing that is very important to point out – A dog can get the product in its mouth in a number of ways, such as misapplication of the product and/or by not separating the treated dog from other animals.

Thanks Sergeant's. I get that you need to protect your rear, but putting this on the pet owner? In my case, we do have other pets in the house, but they were all segregated - beginning shortly before treatment and continuing through now (17 hours after application).

I've called my vet to get our dog in today, and am thinking of calling Sergeant's 24-hour hotline, just to see what their vets say. I'm disappointed - in Sergeant's, but also in myself with choosing a cheaper alternative treatment. Next time I'll just get the Advantage.

I agree with all of the compliants people have made. I have a black pug and I figured that instead of buying the vets flea control medication for example, Frontline or Advantage it would be more cost efficant to use Sargeants flee medication. Within a couple of hours, I noticed that my pug was scratching but I did not think anything of it. I did not realize what was going to happen to my pug, but all of a sudden she started lossing her hair and she was kept on scracthing until she started bleeding on both shoulder blades. Finally, I took her to the vet and the asked me what I did differently to her. I told them that I used an over the counter medication called Sargeants Gold for flee control. The vet told me that this company has had compliants about thier medicatons but they were not doing anything about it. Honestly this company should be sued, fined, and shut down for good! I will never buy anything from this company again.

All right this royally pisses me off! My dog got a case of the fleas...big woop what happens when you get used clothes and what not from people. instead of going and getting my trusted Hurts which has never given me a problem, i used the Sargeants silver drops i had gotten from my mom...what do you know an hour later and my lil Australian cattle dog is restless, drooling, cant stop licking her lips and freaken twitch-en! she has never done this before EVER!
This is completely unacceptable! With this number of complaints its more then just ah random freak reaction. I work for a Kroger in Ohio and at this point I'm going to see to it our store NEVER caries this product again and to top it off I'm also going to take this up with our division president to see to it its removed from all Kroger's in northern Ohio, and believe me Kroger takes product safety VERY seriously!

I just got a 5 month old puppy 3 weeks ago. His name is Max. I'm watching him lying here, foaming at the mouth. We had just got finished washing him in mild shampoo after using a sergents flea and tick control product. I agree a "class action" suit is needed. It's 11:30 at night and there is not a vet open anywhere, where we live. I know I'll get no sleep tonight, keeping an eye on my pup. I bet the people at Sergents are getting a good nights sleep.

I went to the grocery store the other day and bought some Sergeants Gold for my little maltese. I applied it yesterday morning and he had an immediate reaction. He was racing around the house, he was scratching and he could not hold still not even for 2 seconds. I put him in the tub several hours later hoping this would stop his misery. It didn't. He suffered all night. He paced around my bed, as if he was on speed. His heart was racing, he was itching non-stop. I thought that he was going to die. I could not afford to go to the vet. I stayed up with him most of the night. It was awful. I can't even begin to explain what my dog went thru. I went to work and I came home and bathed him again. Then, I read this website and the comments and I just bathed him again in Dawn dishwashing detergent. He cannot go thru another night like last night and I can't either. These people need to be sued and these products need to be TAKEN OFF THE SHELVES permanently. Shame on you. I will never, ever, ever buy your products and I think that we need to do a "class action" suit. My dog could have died last night.

I can't believe how many pets and people this has affected, and they are still selling it?
My little Terrier mix, Buster, had a horrible reaction. He is having a hard time walking, almost like he is a little paralyzed. Please tell me that he will get better, I can't stand to see him like this he was always so active and happy and his brother Zeus misses thier playtimes.
I also have been on a fixed income and went the cheap route, every time I look at Buster I feel such guilt.
I am going to contact the Better Business Bureau also, they need to be STOPPED!

I too purchased the Sargeants Gold at a local grocery store. Due to the economy I thought this was one place where I might be able to cut a corner. WRONG. My poor lab mix, he is 4 years old. I applied the solution to his shoulder blade area and around 20 minutes later he was running around the house uncontrollably with his tail down and ears back like he was scared. I took him outside, he was panting and rubbing his head and back into the ground. I got online and read all of these horror stories. I feel horrible. I washed his back down with warm water and dish liquid which appeared to bring him immediate relief. He is now sleeping on the couch and his breathing appears somewhat labored but not as bad as it was. Poor thing... if anything happens to him, I will never forgive myself. I am nervous to even go to bed. Hoping he will rest comfortably and be fine in the morning. Fingers crossed!

So, I applied Sergeant's Silver 9-20 lbs to my chihuahua, Jack. He normally uses Frontline with no reaction, but I was shoping and I found Sergeant's which was much cheaper. So I figured it was worth a shot. Soon after applying he was twitching, biting, scatching, and even vomited. we washed him with Dawn dish soap like his vet had suggested. It helped but he wasn't his playful self. We took him to his vet soon after that and they kept him for a couple of hours for observation and they researched the product. They found many reports like these that showed the same signs of reaction just like Jack.
I believe this product should be taken off the market!

I am very upset! I used this product on my dog! She's a mess, itching, shaking and oozing on her back where it was put! I am on my way to the vet! I am so sorry I bought this and used it on my dog! I've emailed the Company and the store where I bought it! I will do whatever it takes to make it known how terrible this product is! Not sure if I can forgive myself for this! Nor can I forgive the makers of such a terrible product!

Same crap! Sargeants Flea medicine...came 3 blue tubes in the box. We put the stuff on all 3 dogs and went to bed. The next morning, our cat, who loves to groom the dogs, was convulsing and foaming at the mouth! The vet bill was $407! Then, just when we thought we were at least through this mess...that evening, one of the dogs, a Yorkipoo, began twitching and scratching and moaning. We bathed her in soothing dog shampoo which didn't help at all. We then went to Petco and got some anti-itch spray for dogs. That didn't help either! We then took the dog to the Emergency (high dollar) vet where they treated her with a smile and asked for $386. All in all, we're into this now for almost $800! All because we wanted our little friends to be free of pesky fleas! Sargeants needs to be out of business! I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I am not sure what agency controls these greedy idiots!

Ok.. So Bella ( my little Shih Tzu).. Yesterday I applied this Sergeants Flea Drops on her, ( we are going camping and I thought I could prevent fleas). Later, last night she was crazy restless. tremors, looked wild eyed. and could not relax. I washed her, thinking her skin may be irritated with the flea stuff. but she continued to get worse. Finally going to the Animal Emergency Room., She is now on IV, s had to have muscle relaxants, Valium and a charcoal treatment. I cannot believe that there is no warnings on the label. It is a vague statement that says if your dog has adverse symptoms contact your vet... No where does it list what kind of things may occur.
The Vet knew exactly what was going on. She says she see this often. No how bad is that. Why is there no guideline and regulations with these products. I am very upset. The public should be informed of this. We have s warning on OUR medicines etc. Why not on products for animals..

I too used this medicine on my 12 pound bischon. Poor thing 2 days later is still scratching and miserable. I did end up at the er vet which is more expensive as it was middle of the night on the weekend. He has hair lose from the scratching due to the product. I agree this company needs to stop selling this right away.

Well, I hate to say it, but everyone should realize that ALL flea products are dangerous. They are insecticide for goodness sake! If you use a flea shampoo you NEVER use the drops too! Rub bug spray all over your body and see if you don't get sick! Use only the minimum necessary, ALWAYS read the label and remember every time you use all that stuff you are rubbing insecticide all over your pet and they can't just go take a shower. There is no reason to use that crap all year long in any place that snows. Why don't the companies provide a tiny drop in a small "test applicator" that you could test on the pet first? And why do they have such huge doses for pets of highly variable weight? Something needs to be done to work on natural ways of eliminating fleas.

I took my miniature schnauzer to the Vet on Saturday, 9/12/09, for what appeared to be a rash of some sort that was on his shoulders and oozing and had continued to spread. The vet gave him a steroid shot, prednisone, and pain meds. At the time, I didn't put two-and-two together to realize that it was the Sergeant SentryPro XFC flea drops that I had properly administered to his spine. I did not spread it on his sides. Well, needless to say that my dog was miserable: withdrawn, in pain, did not want to be touched. The vet shaved him and we discovered he had been chemically burned! I have the photos to prove it and it is horrible. He is in so much pain! I had no idea and I am so upset. The vet called Sergeants who, of course, tried to do damage control by saying that it was a reaction and that the vet was doing the right thing. We bathed the dog 3x in Dawn dishwashing liquid to get the poison off his skin. He must remain on pain meds and antibiotics until he is no longer suffering and the infection stops. It is now 9/14/09 and I have the guilt of knowing I put such a horrible product on my pet. Sergeants should be banned from the marketplace! What I want to know is how can the employees at Sergeants go to sleep at night with a clear conscience knowing that they create a product that kills and severely injures our pets!?!

By the way, I had tasted something metallic in my mouth and had the feeling of "spiders" on my skin. I had poisoned myself too!

Everyone who complains here needs to write to the EPA, FDA, and file a complaint with Sergeants. If we all complain, perhaps we can get their product removed from the shelves and stop pet suffering!

IF YOU USE THIS PRODUCT, YOU MUST WASH YOUR PET IN DAWN DISHWASHING LIQUID IMMEDIATELY TO REMOVE THE CHEMICALS. Per the vet, Dawn is the only liquid safe and effective to completely strip the chemicals from the pet!

I am so upset that this product is still on the shelves. What does it take to get this product off of the shelves. How many more dogs have to suffer agonizing pain and discomfort before anything will be done. Our dog suffered severe discomfort and pain when we applied Sergeants Silver for fleas on her. She was up all night crying and moaning in agonizing pain. She was restless and pacing all night until we finally realized that it was the Sergeants Flea product that caused this to happen. I was horrified to read all the reviews by people telling the same story about their pets. Why is this company still in business? If it were a human being that had to suffer like this, it would have been pulled off the shelves immediately and the company would have to answer to all these complaints. Why not for dogs? They can also feel pain and discomfort.

I find it appalling that this product is still on the market. And that Sergeants has nerve enough to say they are sorry. Obviously none of these people have used this product on they're dogs. I used the gold on my chihuahua which is 9.8oz.I used the correct type after putting it on my dog I noticed him running around like crazy scratching and twitching. I immedately figured out it was the flea medicine and washed him 3 times in dishwashing liquid. I called the emergency vet and he told me to give him some benedryl and if he was not better take him to my reg vet first thing in the morning. I took him in and my dog had to be on IVs all day and still on benedryl. It has been 48 hours and he has not slept more than 10-15 minutes at a time due to the twitching and jumping around and scratching. I have contacted my local tv station to see if they could do a story on this and am looking into getting a class action law suit started. The misery and pain this product causes is inhumane. If it was a human they would be pulling it off the market already. This company knows because of all the complaints.I hope that they go out of business. The things they do for the almighty dollar.

OMG I was checking on sergants gold for my under 5lb kitty. We gave her the flea drop and figured for 10$ at walmart hopefully it will work. So far the fleas are still there and its been about a week or 2 since I gave it to her. I didnt respond much to her changes thinking maybe she was just over loving or whiny, but now I am freaking out, I noticed she has been scratching her neck a lot, she has a lot of scratchs on her face. She lays on me a lot more and even crys at me during the night when I am on the computer. I figured she was over needy, I have no idea if this is a reaction and dont have any money to take her to the vet to be sure. (I am disabled and on SSI so money is tight) I am scared for my kitty after reading all this information. How can they market such a dangerous product. I gonna try bathing her (wish me luck she is fiesty with water) and see if I cant get that horrible medication off her... ; ;

Ahhhh...the same thing happened last night. I have 2 Corgis and we applied Sergeants Gold flea control for 9-20 within 1/2 hour of application they both started having reactions, the twitching, pacing, heavy panting, obvious discomfort. We then decided to bath them using dog shampoo. That seemed to give some temporary relief but soon they were exhibiting the same problems as before the bath. We then took them to the beach and thought a good salt water swim would help and again, it did temporarily. They were both up all night, crying, panting, etc...when we called the Sergeants help line they recommended to bathe them using dish soap and all symptoms should end within 24 hours oh and not to use their product again (NO [censored])! What a horrible and frightening experience this has been...at the very least I'm going to ask every store in my community that sells these awful products to pull them from the shelves.

Just this week I noticed that our dog had quite a few fleas after visiting the groomer. We are a one income family and can not afford Front Line. We had tried Hartz, but it just didn't work. I was at Kroger's this weekend and saw they had Sergeant's Gold for dogs that weigh 9 to 20 pounds, which is suppose to be their new improved formula with skin protection technology. I applied it to her and of course she went running around the house rolling around like she does after getting a bath. Last night, I noticed that she was panting a lot and running around the house and simply acting weird. However, I didn't give it much thought. Today, I couldn't even get her to go out to go to the bathroom. She laid around in our coat closet on my children's shoes. It didn't dawn on me that it could be an allergic reaction to the Sergeant's, but I decided to give her a bath with Palmolive dish soap. She was shaking up a storm, but Muffin appeared releived after I started working the dish soap in to clean her. She has finally come out of the closet, but she still isn't herself. Muffin acts like there are thousands of fleas attacking her at times. I am going to give her a bath in Dawn tomorrow and do that for a couple of days until she is back to normal. Unfortunatley, we don't have the money to take her to the vet so we are hoping this will help since appears to have made a small difference already. I wish I would have researched this before buying Sergeant's. Looks like I am going to have to find a natural alternative to the flea problem, because we can not afford the Front Line. I am just glad that nothing too serious happened to Muffin. I am planning on calling the company and returning it for a refund.

(July 16 2009)I am in the middle of worrying whether my dogs, a boxer and a Puggle will be alright. I gave sergeant's Silver to both of them ( I usually use Frontline, but in this economy, I was trying to save $$.) 24 hourse later, Duke, our Puggle started whining, chewing his feet, became hyper and couldn't settle down. I was trying to sleep, but finally at 11:30 PM last night I gave him a bath, not even thinking that it could be an allergice reaction. He seems really releived when I put in in the tub and bathed him, with Pantene Shampoo. So this morning, I came to work and googled "flea control dogs, sergeants' and all these complaints came up. I was horrified, because Lilly, our boxer, had not shown symptioms, but some of the reactions were delayed as I read above. I left work and went home and bathed them both in the Dawn dishwasheing soap. ( Duke got a second bath since I had used shampoo the first time) . I will be monitoring both of them very closely. Duke seems ok, and he did sleep next to me all night after his first bath, but is still wiggy with his feet and ears. Lilly still seems fine. Right now, I don't know if its all in my head, but my skin feels hot in my arms and my nose and I wonder if some of the stuff entered my skin while washing it off! I will never use ANY kind of flea treatment between the shoulders again! Only flea dips for Lilly and Duke from now on! They are family, just as all you readers condsider your pets.
