I have worked for Macys (Barton Creek) for 8 months and my lease to my apartment was up so i had to move back home (6 hours away) until i was able to renew my lease. 2 weeks prior to this i talked to HR and was told i couldnt take a leave of absence since i was part-time contingent. He then told me that my manager (Bening) would just distribute my hours and keep me on the schedule. So after many phone calls to reach anyone from Macys i was then told by head of HR (Lisa) that i no longer had a job and that i was told the wrong information. The funny and annoying thing is that i was still on the schedule but yet "couldnt" work there anymore. DONT ever work at a MACYS. They treat you like your beneath them and they only care about how many credits you get for them!

My daugher had a seasonal job with Macys and she was asked to stay on after the holidays. She was doing excellent but she ran into trouble when another clerk used her register to price change on her register (my daugher was new, she worked there for only two months, and given a video training on working the register). Turns out, this girl was trying to steal under her account. My daugher didn't catch it and subsequently, she was brought in for a two hour interrogation by security and the management. (This was over a 22.00 dollar item). The way they treated her was awful. She took full responsibility for not using the correct judgement, but she was not 'in' on what this girl was doing. Her supervisors and security all believed her account and they would have kept her on, but the local managers had zero input in her keeping her job. It automatically went out of store and she was fired. So, in sum, a new employee makes a mistake, she is treated like a criminal and interrogated in a demeaning way (she was escorted out of the buidlng) and fired despite all of her supervisors and managers thinking she was a great employee and that it was understandable given the fact that she was very new to both the store and retail. The higher ups just fired her. I will never shop there again, nor will anyone in my family.

"Stock room sorting and unpacking of sale merchandise is really suffering, since part time associates are under very heavy pressure to keep sales up and not devote any time to non sales producing activity"

I've noticed this too. As a part timer (12 hour employee), I've been working 10+ extra hours a week (in addition to work 40 hours a week at my real job) because the staffing is such a joke. Recently lost a couple counter managers (full timers) for ### reasons, I believe to "make an example" to the other employees and scare them into complying to their silly rules. The Men's department is ALWAYS understaffed, with maybe 3 people covering the entire department per day (I think they have a total of 8 or 9 registers in Men's).. which means.. customers bring all of their crap over to cosmetics and we lose out on our sales because we're ringing up Men's items. Then we have the Men's staff getting pissed (rightfully) that they're not making their goals because their customers are bringing all of their crap over to us due to long lines or if the Men's employees are doing recovering/emptying fitting rooms/at a different register.. it's just a mess.

"part time associates are under very heavy pressure to keep sales up and not devote any time to non sales producing activity"
Yep. I've noticed this also.

I will say though, that lately.. most of the new hires and applicants are garbage. Most of the people that they hire end up not showing up after a week.. which.. then we have to wait to see if the employee is going to come back (in case they didn't show up due to an emergency or whatever).. and if they don't, then we have to wait for them to hire another person.. and it's just a never ending cycle.

I blame not only Macy's for sucking, but also humans for having such poor work ethic.

Are Macys stores across the country firing all the full time sales staff to avoid the extra commission and any benefits? There seems to be a systematic cleanout of any full time people below department manager level in at least some stores. Stock room sorting and unpacking of sale merchandise is really suffering, since part time associates are under very heavy pressure to keep sales up and not devote any time to non sales producing activity. Firings are for lateness, such as a non paid training meeting going over schedule and associates forbidden to clock in until manager tells them to do so, after the shift start time. Pace of going to part time people has increased in June 2011 through July.

I worked for Macys full time for about 8 months. 6 or 7 months in I started taking evening classes at a local university. Two classes a week at 6pm. I was informed by management that my school schedule would no longer be accomodated and because I could not "fulfill my duties as a full time employee" I would have to work part-time. As FT you are only required to work two closing shifts per week. I cant close on the days I dont have class? As a result of them forcing me step down, I lost my benefits. Not to mention the fact that Im a single parent. On top of that, Im not the only college student in the store but it seems that the rules dont apply to 'everyone'. And you can take that any way you wish. I would think that a major retailer like Macys would encourage their employees to seek higher education and not hinder them by taking their benefits and money out of the mouths of employee families. I would never and will never suggest to anyone that Macys is a great place to work. You are often blinded by the wonderful discounts and coupons they offer but they will only keep you in debt to them. Changing your scheduled hours at-will without notice to you. And even changing your job status without your signature, no forms of any sort, nothing. To get the job you have to go thru hell and high water, now does that make sense to you?
Why make my complaint here and not to Macys? Complaints to higher-ups about the higher-ups gets you(in this order)1. no help from your manager when you need her 2. You notice your hours mysteriously disappearing 3.They find any reason possible to get up stairs in the "principles office" 4. Your written up for anything from sneezing too loud to complaints from your RACIST co-worker and last but not least, step 5. They call you upstairs where you sit across from a few of the sales floor managers as they fire you. So far Im up to step 4 WISH ME LUCK.

Call Solutions In Store. Don't let them get away with this. If you are still effectively active in their system Solutions may tell you to go to another store and speak to the HR manager to get a transfer.
