H&R Block / HRB Digital unsatisfactory service and a confused rep

I went to a H&R Block this year because I did not know how to file a 1040, and I had a few questions.. I was excited on at least getting some money back to help pay off toward my debts I had but I did not know you would get charged for filing my taxes! ..now i'm a person thats trying to recoupe and get out of debt but when you charge for the services I should have asked first hand before going in.. so I was the one with egg on my face (And out of 257$ from my refund check!), but the service that my rep gave me did not seem to know about doing my taxes and was rude at the end when I had to pay for my services and she pretty much was trying to rush me out of the door and finish up filing my taxes because she had her DAUGHTER at work and her DAUGHTER was getting hungry and wanted to go eat and kept interrupting the mother the entire time she worked on my taxes, which is upsetting and makes me worry if she did my taxes correctly, If I get a mail from the IRS its going to be her fault i'm hoping.. Next year i'm just going to file my taxes by myself and I will never go with H&R Again..

Or you have another choice. Go to IRS office or non profit places to file it for free. But I agree with Taxprep4u. All these compnies are in market to put food on the table. I don't know what makes you think its all free.

Eggonhisface: Are you kidding me? You thought the people working at H&R Block were doing all that for free? I don't understand that kind of thinking. Do you work for free? Don't go to Jackson Hewitt or Liberty Tax Service or a CPA or an accountant. All of those people work for pay. None of them work for free. Amazing!

You indicate you are going to prepare your own taxes next year. Good for you. Study up on the tax laws, there are roughly 67, 000 pages. Although you can probably get by with studying just Publication 17 which is available for free from the IRS and it is only 306 pages long! Good Luck!

H&R Block / HRB Digital tax refund/guarantee

i went to HR Block with a simple tax refund, this is my 35th year about. The tax preparation took 10 minutes max, and cost 69.00 but comes with a guarnatee (?) It seems like a fair deal?
I waited 14 days for my refund and one week later the IRS told me in a letter that the taxes were done wrong.
I was unsure in who's favor the mistake fell upon, so again I waited.
Two days ago I called the office where I went and they said in 1 minute "yea, we owe you 160.00".
Well then they said another 8-12 weeks for that refund, though that was incorrect also. When I asked that
they go back 3 years to see if the same mistake was made by them on there behalf they said " well that is not without a 20.00 fee for each year. so let me get this straight; they made a mistake they guarantee but without a refund in addition they want me to pay to find the mistakes they promise to stand behind. my tax refund was for less than one great purse, and you are trusting thousands. Think about this, if you cant get me right
how can they get everyone else right.
I hope Mr. CEO reads more than the wall street journal or his bank statement. Being unemployed for two years
is hard enough. I believed in them and they have failed me and want me to pay to fix the situation.
I have the right to doubt past years and they have the owness to prove that they did not make that same mistake.

I used H&R Block's online filing service for its convenience and privacy. Now its online software didn't add all my GA state credit up in the total amount of refunds and came up an error. So the over the phone customer rep advised me to mail state returns in. There was no instruction of I should print out and which document I should mail together with the form. Also the print out I supposed to mail to my state contains wrong refunds amount because its software didn't add my home buyer credit into the total! So I made several calls to their service and technical department, still no corrective action. Finally I called to ask for refund on my state tax service fee. The supervisor said he can't do anything because the software has done my state return. Who should pay for the a service providing erroneous calculation. I am disputing the fee with my CC company.

In short H&R Block's online service gave me a 1+1=1 and came out to say its correct and I should pay for it since I used it. This should be a warning for those even thinking about H&R Block.

We had received the 8, 000 FHB credit this year. For one thing when we did our taxes HnR block did't know anything about how to file the FHB credit. They had to look it up. So we gave them all the info they needed to send it off. We picked up a sealed envlope and were told ur all set. We sent it off expecting our refund in April. Oh boy did we get a huge shock. The IRS sent it all back due to the lack of the 5405 form. I went to HnR block and they agreed that they didn't put the form in the packet of things sent to the IRS and it was their fault. So now when talking to the IRS they say it will be August until we get the refund. Can't wait that long for our payment when it would have been here in april if it wasn't for them being so careless .

What part of this does HnR have to be accountable for? According to them NOTHING. I did receive a 75 coupon for our next visit. That dosn't cut it. It wasn't our fault. They should have made sure the form was in there. Thats why we paid them $75 to prepare the FHB papers. Now were are comiing close to loosing our home and due to an illness im needing medical care. BEWARE... We will never go there again..

I went into the H&R Block store in Columbia SC. Where I was told I my fiance could recieve his refund in my bank account. Come to find out that its not true so know we have to wait a whole month to recieve our refund. I think that HR Block should make sure their information is factual. They number one charge to much. They dont have the right information. Number two they overbook we had to wait 30 minutes for the lady to get into the office to service us. Then they claim they could acess our early w-2 but come to find out that wasnt true either.

I tried filing my taxes online with H&R Block. I tried using their simple pay program and was given an account. The account number and the RTN are invalid and now I'm stuck in the middle of filing and cannot file elsewhere. It makes me angry to think they can call it simple when it has been extremely difficult for me tofile my taxes for the first time in twelve years. I don't have a bank account, because I think banks are theives and now it looks like tax preperation companies are doing the same thing.

I filed an e-file return through H&R Block. H&R offered what they termed as "simple pay" to cover the cost of assisting in preparing the returns which would be deducted from the refund coming from the IRS. Once the return was accepted by the IRS, H&R Block gives access to a countdown clock showing you the exact time the IRS will issue the refund check. Here is what H&R Block doesnt tell you: Once H&R Block receives the money it could take up to 5 days for H&R Block to deduct the fee and send the balance to your account. Also, there is NO WAY to track this process! So if you file with them thinking it will be faster, DON'T! It's amazing to me that you can track your refund withthe IRS but with H&R Block it's a guessing game. Imagine the amount of interest they make by hanging on to everyone's money to the very last minute. They have had my IRS reund now for 5 days so they could deduct $29.99. STAY AWAY FROM THEM!

H&r block money waster alert! Stock traders beware!

I have been a stock trader for years now and like everyone else in the market too busy to do my own taxes. Usually they're fairly cheap to do at hr block, but lately the cost has been climbing. My last bill was almost double what the usual cost was. I found out why, form another h&r block preparer, stock trades can be reported in yearly totals which generates less paper work and costs half as much to do! H&r block's customer service system is old and doesn't even let you leave messages, so you may want to avoid using h&r block!

I am a single mother with 3 children and i was mislead and ripped off by hrblock i am paying $369.00 plus other fees for a quick tax return that I am not getting quickly at all When I agreed to this noone told me I had to qualify for a loan I was treated as if I would undoubtedly get my return in 2 daysNow i still have to pay all this money who knows when I get my return meanwhile the reason i was paying all this money was to pay my past due rent and buy groceries for my children Leaving out information that is pertinent to ones decision is wrong and dishonest and obviously the agents know your financial status and still take advantage Now I wait for my expensive tax return with really no idea when I will get it BUYER BEWARE!

YES, H&R BLOCK WORKS FOR THE IRS

Due to a personal situation I was not able to have the IRS do my taxes last year for the year 2017 so I went to HRBLOCK and paid $164.00 to HRBLOCK to have my 2017 taxes done this year. 2017 was ok and done but they IRS was not able to do it. anyway I was supposed to received $1420.00 according to HRBLOCK but instead I got a check from the IRS for $237.00 I went back to the HRBLOCK office to see if they can help me understand why I received such small amount, but I got from them such a fancy explanation, that I truly walk out of their office with the inside of my head in BLANK, so, then I called the IRS and guess what, they told me to check it out with HRBLOCK they said that's how it was send from hrblock and that they go by the records and what's on the system...oh heck, I guess next time I'l go straight to the IRS and have them do my taxes IT WILL BE CHEAPER...!...

H&R Block / HRB Digital charge for free e-filing

I just completed my 2010 taxes on line with H&R Blocks free file program. The program was fairly easy to use with easy to follow help instructions. However, once the forms are completed and ready to be sent the payment page asks for a $9.95 payment for the state tax portion of the filing. I filed New York State Taxes and their is a section of the program at the beginning clearly stating that the state taxes are filed free in participating states, and NY is listed as a participating state.

There were no contact phone numbers availble on the program and it took some digging to find one. Once I found a number, [protected] option #2, I explained the issue. I was told that the free filing was only for the federal taxes and that the state taxes are normally 19.95, but through the free file program they are 9.95.

I explained to the customer service rep that it clearly states in the H&R Block program that the state filing is also free for participating states and that New York is listed on their program as a participating state. I was told that it must be a glich in the program because the state filing costs 9.95.

I then told the customer representaive that my fiancee had filed her taxes with the program and that she had encountered the same problem and she had been given a code to bypass the payment. The rep then told me she would put me on hold to get me a "key code" to bypass payment. Obviously one has to know to mention the key code in order to get one. This is clearly a money making feature because if the filers don't mention the "key code" the representatives never bring it up. It's clearly not a glich in the program otherwise...why would there be a "key code" option on the payment options page of the program?

H&R Block / HRB Digital these guy are total jokes

I went into H&R Block and the first blockhead said he didn't know how to file the 1040X amended return for the first time home buyer's credit. He recommended coming back to see another agent. Not only did the rep fill out the form incorrectly she also said nothing else needed to be mailed to the IRS. Turns out we needed to submit some paperwork from the closing.

Not sending the paper work delayed us finding out that the rep error-ed on half of the lines. So after being read the riot act they agreed to resubmit the form with corrections, even had a manager make the corrections, and refund our filling fees.

So the IRS sent the form back again because the royally messed up again. I called the 1-800-HR-Block and they opened a case and said that it would be no more than 6 days before the district manager called.

On the 10th day of waiting I called back to see what the deal was. Apparently they had closed the case because I didn't answer the phone. Of course they took my number down incorrectly.

Can't file tax returns or even take down a 10 digit number correctly. We have still not heard from them but we have found out from the IRS how to fix it. We will have to wait another 12 weeks.

In total we will have had to wait 10 months for an amended return.

H&R Block / HRB Digital software glitches

I have both worked for H&R Block and used their software for over 10 years. I had always recommend both their offices and their software, even after last year, when we discovered there was a software glitch that was miscalculating self employment taxes, which changed my sister's refund from $5900 to $3800 after the IRS re-calculated the H&R Block software error. I kept my faith in H&R Block until this year when the same mistake from last year happened again.

I did both my sister's and my return by hand while also completing tax prep with H&R Block software to make sure that last years problem did not happen again. Well it did and I immediately contacted H&R Block to inform them it was still a problem. Unaware that another of my sisters had already filed her return using H&R Block software to end up paying Efiling fees for an 8 to 15 day return, which ended up taking 6 weeks, with no refund of her Efiling fees and a return of $2900 verses $3509 that H&R Block software had stated she would receive.

H&R Block agreed they had a program error that they were releasing an update on Feb 11, 2010 to correct this glitch. I waited to an additional 3 weeks to file both mine and my other sister's return for the update to be released and installed before I completed our returns. Even after this update, my sister's return stated she would get $6800 back, but after Efiling and paying the Efiling fees, she did not get her return in 8 to 15 days, she got her return in a month, and the return was $4400 with the explanation that there was calculation error.

This has created many issues because H&R Block software advertises they guarantee accurate returns, but when you call them on this guarantee, their answer is to refund you the money you paid for their program. Oh and lets not forget their useless apologies.

H&R block software messed up my taxes this year and I am still waiting for a refund 10 months later because it is under review. The software will scan the w2 and fill in the info on the return. The problem is that on both the online software and the downloaded version it puts the SS withholding into the fed withholding box on the return.

Ha! Ha! I thought I was the only dull color in the box.. You know the one you get in the mail early January every year from H & R Block ? It doesn't have all the updates in the tax laws so, that's why I waited till March 18th to file.. That one didn't have the glitch out of it and I played a hard game trying to get my money for the services that they screwed me up on

Had same issue... it glitched after I printed the returns. I found the issue is that is originally filled out the Short schedule SE and then for some reason after I printed, it went to Long Schedule and didn't transfer some of the data to that section!?!
Frustrating to say the least.

And now you see the problem with tax software. If the preparer doesn't understand the results,
they have no idea if the refund is correct. This is why I always stress the importance
of understanding where each and every number on the return comes from and how it was
calculated. Last year Turbo Tax had problems, this year it's H&R Block. Next Year? Seems like a crap shoot to me.

You indicated you have worked for H&R Block. Now imagine someone who doesn't have the tax knowledge you have, yet believes that since they can check e-mail and surf the net, they must be qualified to do their own tax return. I saw a self-prepared return a couple days ago that had entries on almost every adjustment line and expense line. This person figured the more entries the better.
Of course the IRS audited and he has an $11, 000 tax levy headed his way. I offered to do the
2009 return, payment due on completion of course!

H&R Block / HRB Digital hidden fees

Prior to making my appointment, I was given a general quote for my state and federal filing fees. Being that I was single with one job, I that I would be in that ballpark. Not! After completing a simple 1040A @$70.00, I was charged $25.00 for Childcare calculation, $35.00 Child Tax Worksheet preparation, $9.00 Head of Household Determination Status, Etc. Totaling $232.00. These additional charges for having two children are outrageous! It took 10 seconds to enter this information. H&R BLOCK NEEDS TO POST ITS FEES ON THE WALL! If I knew their billing practices I would have simply left and not wasted my time. Never Again!

Thank you for all of your remarks. No offense taken. However, I did discuss my status and was given a quote over the phone. I did not expect it to be exact, but at least in the ball park. After sitting for several hours, I did pay the amount requested. I am now doing my taxes myself. I will not "whine" anymore. I will do as always and take my business elsewhere when I am not satisfied. I felt my tax preparer was inexperienced (unlike before) and I just was not happy at all with experience. In addition, I was warned by several co-workers with bad experiences. One again, thank you for your thoughts and I hope the cheaper software does not affect your employment.

Those were not hidden charges - the title of your post is misleading. There is a charge for every form or calculation. They cannot be posted on the wall - it would take up all four walls due to the astronomical number of forms and other variables involved. If you thought the price was to high, you had the option of leaving and not paying for the service. However, had you gone anywhere else, the fees would've been even higher.

If you want to talk about hidden fees - try Turbo Tax - they advertize that it's free, but it never actually is.

Bray, moan, and whine. We don't charge you on the basis of time but you are charged on the basis of forms filed and determinations made. If you'd rather go to a CPA firm and be charged while the accountants are sitting around gabbing, or in the rest room, or checking their personal email because something in your tax information spurred them to look something of their own up...by all means go there and be happier. If you think that kind of stuff doesn't happen, take it from someone who also works in a CPA office...it does.

After meeting with the H&R blook in Southgate the work is being done but the head guy of the area says he not taking care of are problem after promissing to take the problem and get it fixed now he says take it to the pepoe who don't know what to do in Burton Michigan. My words about H&R Blook is the misstakes the company makes the company makes you buy a protection due to there misstakes and the H&R branch dose not stand behind what the company in Burton makes you buy. All H&R are not bad but the burton michigan one are liers tell you that the money is comming and then the company will not answer question Liers are what the company in Burton is

Frustrated with H&R Block: HSBC is the bank dealing with the IRS not H&R Block. HSBC will receive your money if the IRS sends it, then they will forward it less tax prep fees and and bank fees to your account. At no point is H&R Block hanging onto your refund and collecting interest on it.

H&R Block / HRB Digital no e-file

I Recently filed my taxes at H & R Block like I do every year. Well I had two W-2's this year. I had two because my company was bought out by another company, that company is in Canada. When she was doing my taxes, she said that I couldn't E-File because one of my W-2's was International. I accepted, not knowing otherwise. I went to work that same day to let everyone know that this would happen. Everyone else at my work did their taxes and processed through E-File. There is a certain number you type in for International addresses. GREAT! Now I get to sit and wait for 8 weeks to mail in my return and wait for them to process it. It has now been 4 weeks and every time I go to check my status online, they say "Sorry, your request could not be processed." I thought about calling to complain to my Tax preparer but what's the use? All they would say is sorry there is nothing I can do now. Awesome, I just wasted $280 filing when now I have to wait because the "TAX PROFESSIONALS" don't know how to file and international W-2. That's what grinds my gears, next year, H & R Block lost this customer.

By the way, it's H&R Block that does not allow the electronic filing of an international return, it's the IRS. And since you filed the return by mail H&R Block can't "track" it for you until the IRS posts it on their site.

Well you just got a bad preparer it doesn't mean that none of them know what they are talking about. You should call and tell them what happened with that particular preparer. Ask to speak with the office manager tell them you are not coming back next year unless something is done they may send you a coupon

H&R Block / HRB Digital the amount that they charged us was absolutely criminal

Usually my father-in-law goes to a friend of his to take care of both his and our taxes. This year she was unavailable so we decided to go to H&R block . Our taxes were extremely simple this year to the point where we could have easily done them ourselves however neither my husband nor I were confident enough to take on the challenge. We sat down with the tax man...honestly a college freshman doing taxes for H&R block to make extra cash. We were in there about 20 minutes when he told us that our fee for getting our taxes done was $300.00! We were completely outraged being that my father-in-law's friend did more work last year for us than he did and only charged us $60.00! What they were proposing we pay was roughly about 10% of our total tax return. My husband just found a job and I am unemployed and looking after our 2 kids both under the age of 7 so we don't have that much money. We thought it was absolutely criminal the amount that they charged us and we called the company to complain. The first woman we talked to had us on hold for about ten minutes so we hung up and waited about a half hour and called again. The next woman that I talked to was extremely rude and condensending towards me. I will never use this service again and will tell others not to go with these crooks in the future. I plan to learn how to do my own taxes next year.

That is why I do not like appointments during PEAK! I had a client this year who was late for her PEAK appontment. Iwas then busy doing another client (a walk-in). Since I was busy she did agree to do our drop off service. Since I was busy the rest of the day and the next (in PEAK) I did not have her taxes completed at the end of the next day. I had finished all the material she had left, but was still short some information (bank interest and some other items). She demanded her papers back, was politley given them, and stormed out. She was not loud or abusive. Drop-offs during PEAK do not get priority service. We probably did not explain this well to her. I'll bet she comes back next year, and to me.

HRB has admittedly raised prices too much in the past 10 years. It's almost as if they decided the brand ID left by Henry and Richard (Henry is still living, Richard is deceased) translated as providing Cadillac service at Chevrolet prices.

That wasn't the case. They've been raising prices for so long that they're starting to reap what they've sown these past many years. BUT given this modern age we live in, I stand by my *harsh* comments (per taxprep4u) in that many customers...of every business...simply seem to want to complain anymore. In the office where I work we had a perfect situation happen which illustrates the gun under which we work.

A client had made an appt during PEAK and was upset when we were late in getting to her. She complained loudly and profusely (though without gutter language) about us not respecting her time. She rec'd a $50 coupon from the mgr so as to (basically) get her to quiet down. Then as the interview began, she pointedly reminded us she needed to be elsewhere as she had other appointments. Refusing to utilize our "Drop Off" service, we proceeded to do her taxes. Because they were on the less-complicated side, they were done in about 20 minutes. She then began to loudly complain that we'd rushed through her taxes and *probably* had made a ton of errors. As the mgr again tried to mollify her, guess what the client asked for...yes...another $50 coupon. She was refused by the mgr and then proceeded to storm out of the office (now) peppering her commentary with the occasional r-rated cursewords.

She (apparently) left our office and then called home office, reporting to them that our entire office was rude to her and unprofessional in general, and demanded her taxes for free. Guess what?!? Home office agreed and issued us a coupon code to enter, giving her everything, except for possible banking products, free of charge. Yes, they sold us down the river over worries about one customer's opinion. As the customer sat in the office and we completed the paperwork on her taxes, she proceeded to make sure everyone around her knew "we'd screwed up" and that "the company had given HER her taxes for free because of it". Our policies prohibit us from being able to say a thing so we had to sit there and take it.

I guess this is the mark of an advanced society?

What was "criminal" is that you expected a professional company to charge you relatively the same price as a friend did. Anyone can see how ridiculous that is. You're obviously just a complainer who wants something for nothing.

Merkel,

As a 10 yr tax pro working for the company, allow me to be even more condescending towards you. Did you REALLY think the price charged by some friend working in a spare bedroom or in a basement is the way to judge professional services and what prices they might charge? If your taxes were that simple, then you'd have tackled them yourselves and been done with it. What you're really telling us is that they weren't simple, that they needed an expert hand to see them through to completion, and that you're mad because you didn't get something for nothing. Fair summation?

I do think our overall prices are too high. But, even if we reduced them by 33% across the board, customers would still be griping because there is some friend somewhere pimping out Turbo Tax (or some software program) and doing returns for a dime a dozen and we're held to that standard. Never mind the countless hours of study we invest and the expectation of customers to be perfect 100% of the time, which is impossible in live tax preparation scenarios. Maybe that fresh-faced kid did your taxes in 20 minutes because his investment of time in working for us made him that skillful.

I'm sorry you are not happy with your experience, but it seems more likely you wanted a reason to complain rather than be happy. I cannot imagine you being satisfied even if we had *only* charged $150. Please do learn how to do your own taxes next year.

H&R Block / HRB Digital not honoring appointment

Being a long time customer I know that getting an appointment is the best way to go to be able to get your taxes done in a timely manner. I was given an appointment for 7:00 pm last night Feb 16, 2010. I arrived at 6:45 because I left home early because of traffic.
The person who I was schedule to do the taxes with took someone in just minutes before I got there. It was 7:45 and the receptionist kept telling me it was only a few more minutes. The tax preparer never came out to apologize for me having to wait. After more than an hour of wating, I had enough and left. I am never going back to H&R Block. It is obvious that my time is not important to them.

When it comes to appointments, this year has been no win for the Tax Pros. Appointments were
made last year at the behest of management who increasingly have zero experience preparing taxes. Don't get me started on that topic. Then clients like you Hector, make a "real" appointment and the Tax Pros can't tell if you made your appointment this year or last year, so instead of waiting around to see if you will show up they take the next walk-in client. Yes, it sucks for you but I work on straight commission and can not afford to just come in and hope and pray everyone with an appointment will show up as scheduled. Your time is important to me, but not as important as my time. At this point in the season, I am aware of only one person that kept the appointment I scheduled for them last year. That is one out of more than 200. In my opinion scheduling appointments one year in advance has been a colossal failure. Will H&R Block lose clients over this issue, yes they will. Will management recognize this and correct the situation, well let's just say I will not be holding my breath.

With that said, everyone in my office is doing their level best to NOT schedule appointments for next year. I have been 97.5% successful in this endeavor. If I see your name on the schedule next year I will have a much higher degree of confidence that you will in fact be coming in and maybe this year's favorite question, "Is that a real appointment?" will be a thing of the past.

One more thing. The Office Leader/Manager should have apologized to you for your wait. Your Tax Pro probably never knew you were there.

Have you never been do a doctor's office and been made to wait? A dentist's office? The DMV? I see, only H & R Block is worthy of your scorn. We are just as suceptible to having late clients throw our schedules off as any other service is, in case you were not aware of that. If we had told that other client to hit the door because of another appointment, then I imagine they'd be here complaining that we were rude to them and disrespected their time.

Sometimes you cannot win.

H&R Block / HRB Digital beware of hidden cost

We just had our taxes done at H&R Block. Was totally surprised at the total cost of having them done. $418.00 for an Itemized tax return.

I normally do my taxes on Turbo Tax, runs me about 90.00 to file and works really well. This year for some reason I was getting an error on the program and couldn't get it to work. So we decided to get them done at H&R, they advertise for 39.95 Federal and 29.95 for state on the EZ form. So that is what we planned to do.

Took our taxes in, they ended up itemizing them, said it would benefit us to do so we would get more of a return.

Well that was true in a way, we got more back, but then they took half of it to pay for the preparation of our taxes.

When did tax prep become so expensive? I remember when I had them done when I had a business and it only cost me around 100.00, but 418.00 for something I could have done in Turbo Tax for 90.00 cost us 418.00 for them to do them. So of course when you are stuck with that kind of bill, they take it from your refund, so it goes to there bank first then to yours. So I figure it will take a long while to get what's left of our refund of $601.00. WOW! They have quite a little scam going don't they? They get half your refund just for doing yourtaxes.

H&R Block / HRB Digital worst service ever

This is the worst service ever from appointment down to the supervisor Ms. Ferguson. I called to make my appointment over the phone and one of the representatives took all my information; name, social security number and phone number telling me our appointment was schedule and to come in at the appointment time. So I get to the office and there was no appointment in system, the staff acted as if they didn't know what they were doing. So I advised the young lady at the front desk I have taxes which requires a exceptional representative and instead of giving me what I ask for she put me with someone who didn't know what they where doing. I than asked for supervisor and the representative stated she not in the office yet, after waiting for the supervisor Ms. Ferguson for over an hour never being available. The representative finally find someone there who has more experience after processing the paper work which all was messed up and now have to owe and be amended. The supervisor than come in the office late I explained the situation to her she states she going to take care of the problem. First she never calls me but has someone else call to tell me I cant get a refund for the poor service. Than I contentiously call the store leaving messages she never calls me back. After a weeks worth of trying to get in touch with her, she sides with her staff stating that I never told this information to them, when I know I definitely did, I wouldn't just make this up, I came there for a professional service and got garbage. I had to remind her that she we wasn't there in the store to to address any of the issue anyway. I would no advised anyone to go there ever in life or you will definably be screwed in the process. DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF! TRUST ME! I'M IN PROCESS NOW WITH REPORTING THEM TO THE HOME OFFICE!BEWARE!

Why did you sign off on a return with a balance due, when you knew you should be getting a refund?

H&R Block hires new people every year, so do CPA firms.
I can't do every return that walks into my office, I have to let junior people do some of them.
That is after all how they will become senior.

If I go to the meat market and order prime rib and the clerk hands me hamburger, you better believe I will not just smile and pay for it.

Yet when you came into the tax office and from the very beginning knew there was a problem, you just rushed ahead and apparently signed off on a return with a balance due knowing that you should have received a refund!

I'll tell you what I tell everyone. If you are unsatisfied with the results, gather your documents and walk out. Period! Do not allow a junior accountant, CPA, lawyer, or Tax Pro at H&R Block to complete a return that you know is incorrect. If you can't find it within yourself to get up and walk out, then my next best advice is always demand an Enrolled Agent. Some are better than others but most are fairly competent.

When I was denied and called them they informed me this was happening to lots of people this year. funny they did not tell me this befor taking my money! H&R Block / HRB Digital over charged

I prepared my taxes online, I signed into H&R Block with my user name from last year, input my info and was logged off before I could finish, I was frustrated and logged back in with my current email address as my user name, I was charged double, 79.90 was taken out of my checking account on 1/31/10 and again on 2/3/10. They created a second account with my current email address and charged me 2 times. I called customer service and they would not refund one of those payments. This is horrible customer service and I will never again have anything to do with H&R Block. They will not work with you to correct errors.

H&R Block / HRB Digital very high fees & bank loans ral there not doing

H&R Block and HSBC
1st they charged over $200 for a very simple tax return, 2nd HSBC charges very high fees for the RAL loan that if you get turned down they drop a little off the RAL fees but still charge a lot for nothing, because when you get turned down they don't give you anymoney till the IRS pays them so there giving you a risk free deal for them, and still charging the hell out of you, they don't give you anymoney till they get it from the IRS so I don't understand why there charging so much.
It's is in there best intrest to turn you down on the RAL loan because they make almost the same amount in fees and don't have to give a dime till there IRS pays the money first, what a total scam.
Best way to do your taxes is go to the irs website and they list plenty of tax prepairs that will do your IRS taxes for free if you make $60, 000 or less then the stae cost around $10 to $15 dallors thats not to bad but they all have different prices, have your refunds direct deposited right in your checking account they are much faster now most time not even 10 days say 7 to 10 days thats not to bad.
Hope this helps you Lee of Hayward, CA

chrapow:

1st If H&R Block charged you over $200 for a simple return as you say, then the question I have for you is why didn't you do your own taxes to begin with? Hmm, perhaps you didn't know how to prepare the return yourself.

2nd: When you couldn't afford to pay for preparation, you decided to get HSBC involved by asking for a loan to cover the tax prep fees. When the loan was denied, did you go in and pay your tax preparer? No! You were told the RAL loan would covert to the RAC and you still were not required to pay. Instead you simply had to wait till the IRS forwarded the refund. Bottom line: It was your tax return that was filed and YOU didn't have to give up a dime in advance. That sounds like a pretty good deal. If you want a better deal, I suggest you learn how to prepare your own return.

Hope this helps.

H&R Block / HRB Digital a rushed process

I just had my income taxes filed today 1-29-10. The whole experience was bad! I had an appointment @ 8pm. Didn't get seen until 9. Well my husband was getting his done and I was next with the same person who was filing his. It had gotten later and everyone was leaving but us and our prepairer. Its now past 10 o'clock so I decided to get a lady by the name of Edith Davila to go ahead and file mine. We get started and I realized she was flying right though it. I was asking questions about my work uniforms(I'm in the medical field). She says it's not gonna make a difference. I also asked her about a theft from my truck.I have a police report. She says it has to be a self-employed vehicle. Another was my medical expenses and she replied, oh, thats right she ignored it! I told her repeatedly to cancel and it was sent anyways.

I agree that it sounds as if you had a bad experience. For that I am very sorry. However, I work at Block. I am the lady behind the counter when you come in that asks if you had an appointment, checks you in, offers you coffee and a newspaper while you wait. I see this happen so many times and it makes me sad because there is nothing I can do about it. See, I have not been to tax school and I cannot file your return. I just answer the phones. But if you were scheduled for 8pm and did not get seen until 9 the people who were doing your return were staying just for you because we close at 9pm. If the preparer was an hour late seeing you, it is probably because other appointments ahead of you ran long, the guy who had a simple W2 last year came in this year and had to do a schedule c but didn't tell me when I scheduled his appointment. I wish this did not happen to clients, but the fact is that no system is perfect. We do have a drop off option, and I would have offered you that at about 8:45. It sounds like you yourself drew the low card in preparers, some rush through returns without explaining why this or that would not help you out. But at that time of night, she may have had a kids with a science project waiting up on her to come home but could not bear to see you sit and wait until midnight to file your taxes. I really hope you call your regular preparer, or call a year round office and ask for a senior tax advisor to help you understand your questions.

MBA's perspective is partially correct. Generally Married Filing Joint is best unless one spouse is
self-employed and wants to shield the other spouse from potential tax liability related to the
self-employment.

For the original poster: So your appointment was at 8pm and your husband was seen at 9:00pm? Hmm, did your husband have an appointment? Both of you should have made an
appointment or at least advised the person taking the appointment that you had multiple
returns to file. I usually spend an hour and change with each client. I would have scheduled
2.5 hours for both of you. My guess is you had 1 one hour appointment and what probably happened was a few of the appointments ahead of you were late or took up an excessive amount time during their preparation and this led to your preparer falling behind.

The Office Leader/Manager should have informed you of the delay and given you an option to
reschedule.

As for Ms Davila's "flying right though it", she may be very experienced with the system.

On the other hand, when I ask about unreimbursed job expenses, many people tell me what they spent on uniforms and I tell them that their uniforms alone will not make a difference.
Although, I usually go on to explain that those type of expenses will need to exceed 2% of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) before it will matter.

Regarding the theft from your vehicle: It does not have to be a self-employed vehicle. A theft
from you truck is deductible but the rules have changed this year. In prior years we reduced the loss by $100 per incident and 10% of AGI, this year it is $500 per incident and 10% of AGI. For most people that effectively eliminates the deduction.

Medical expenses are reduced by 7.5% of AGI. If you have chronic medical problems or a surgery you paid for (ie: no insurance) then you may be able to deduct medical. A few of my clients have insurance that is not through their employer on a cafeteria plan and they are able
to deduct due to their high premiums.

And finally, the easiest way to cancel your preparation is don't pay us and don't sign the
paperwork you were presented with at the end of the interview. You are entitled to have all of
your questions answered. If a preparer is unwilling to answer them, I would get my documents and walk right out.

Hope this helps.

The first mistake was to file seprately. If you are married, why are filing seprately? You are loosing money that way. Unless there is something hanky going ons, like both of you trying to file as head of household. If one of you has an oustanding debt with the federal government, you should still file jointly, but then file an injured spouse form 8379. If you are filing seprately you are loosing money and they should have counseled you on that.

And that's an MBA's perspective!

H&R Block / HRB Digital h&r block 2 day pay guarantee

If you have bad credit and file your taxes at H&R Block, DO NOT choose to get your tax return money in 2 days or less. You will not qualify even if they tell you, "no problem, you'll qualify."

I waited 2 days and did not get my $$. I immediatly researched online and found a mountain of complaints. I called H&R Block and found out that I too was denied and now have to wait the normal 8-15 days. Turbo Tax is free and I wish I would have just gone that route. If I had, I would have saved $260 and the fee for the 2-day return advance.

If you've already filed w/ H&R Block w/ the 2-day pay service don't bother trying to cancel. You'll still have to pay H&R Block for their service.

It's a drag. I wish I would have found this site before then. Lesson learned.

It's the bank guaranteeing your loan for the tax return who denies you which has nothing to do w/ H&R Block. However, they could be more up front especially when I told the woman who helped me that I had bad credit and wouldn't qualify. She guaranteed me after everything was complete a check in 2 days.

Other than this major snafu, she was great and through and their customer service in responding to my questions was excellent, including the supervisor who called me back when I had questions about cancelling.

It then I learned how much of a hassle it was going to be to cancel and decided and take the loss rather than tie up my $$ for a much longer time because the lender has to wait for your IRS check then return it and then the IRS has to cut you a new check.

Also, when you get audited because you didn't understand what you were doing with Turbo Tax or some other tax software, I will still be at your neighborhood office ready and able to do the amendment. As they say you can pay me now or pay me later.

When your RAL application was denied by HSBC Bank, your refund process was flipped into the RAC, the 8-15 day product. Whatever finance charge that was shown to you for the RAL was taken away and you will not be charged that amount. Simply the $29.95 fee for the RAC product, plus the cost of tax prep.

Again, the best solution to the problem is, truly, to buy a software program next year and do your own taxes if we are too high for you. It puts competitive pressure on the company and gets customers prone to complain about anything/everything out of the office...a true win/win scenario...

H&R Block / HRB Digital emerald card offer

My main complaint with this whole Emerald Card Offer is the fact that they are not very clear about who qualifies for this offer. I was told, after sitting for an hour past my appt. time, filling out all the paperwork, listining to how great this is going to be, only to be denied. The reason, because I did not have a"relationship" with H&R. I was told that because I did not come into their office last year to do my taxes( I did them online myself with H&R's free online service.)that I did not have a "relationship" and that this was the first year that they started using that reason to deny people. So heave this warning: don't waste your time if you did not do your taxes with them in their office.

tboggs80: I never much liked that whole "relationship" business either. They should just run a credit check and make a decision based on that. Taking up as much time as they did in your case and then denying you when they could have asked you up front if you had a "relationship" is not likely to produce a happy customer or a repeat customer.

H&R Block / HRB Digital abusive over exorbitant charges

Last year I switched from an accountant to H & R Block to do my tax return and that of my mother. Although the charge to do the return was about the same, it was easier to get to H & R Block. This year, however, the amount I was charged for my tax return more than doubled and my mothers was $225.00 more than last year. Although my return included rental property income which was not on last year's return, I did not feel that $242.00 more for that one additional piece of work was warranted. I really felt ripped off. Worse yet, there was no difference between my mother's tax return for 2006 and 2007; but the charge to prepare her return for 2007 was $225.00 more than last year. The final slap in the face was the fact that they made the very nice lady who did our returns "clock out" because she had too many hours for that week, she spent 30 minutes of "her own time" going over the returns. I was so angry when I left at the charges for preparing the returns and the fact that they were ripping me off and not even paying her for her time.

Not only will I never return to H & R Block, but I will tell everyone who will listen about their abusive over exorbitant charges. Good word of mouth is great advertising, bad word of mouth much more damaging.

The above person is correct with everything he/she said. Also, please keep in mind that H&R Block tax pros are paid on commission. Sure, we get hourly during the season, but that all gets subtracted from her commission check in May. So surely, she was paid for her services.

H&R Block charges based on the complexity of your return. One rental property will involve some additional complexity to properly credit you with the expenses you incurred and the depreciation on the rental unit and other capital assets if they exist. In more extreme cases where Passive Activity and At-Risk Rules come into play the additional cost of preparation will be significantly higher. That "one additional piece of work" can become quite burdensome and expensive. Refer to IRS Publication 925 for more info on that topic.

Regarding your mother's return: I agree a $225 increase for the same return is absurd. You should have asked for an item by item comparison of the charges last year with the charges for this year.
Your tax pro can easily show you that. Then if there is a discrepancy in the pricing you will know exactly what caused it. As always, remember you are under no obligation to pay if you are not satisfied. Simply gather up your documents and walk out.

H&R Block / HRB Digital took my money...

I took the advance from the emerald card from the hr block and the emerald card took some of my money that
Was supposed to be sent to the irs and months later I happen to find out that the emerald card never send my money to the irs and they just kept it. I called requesting information and a print-out of my statement and the operator said she would send in via mail, its been nine months and to this date I cannot get any paperwork from them, they just take your money and then it is a pain to get anything from them... I would not recommend this option to anyone... Please everyone avoid getting the emerald card...
