Dear Management and Everyone this Reaches,
I have used Safeway pharmacy for several years in both Salem and Stayton Oregon. I am a part-time caregiver for the State of Oregon and work full-time for the Department of Revenue. Currently I work with two patients, both who receive several medications weekly.
Due to patients complaining that their pain medications are being short, we have been told to count the pain medications before leaving the pharmacy and again when we give the prescription to the client. As a caregiver, I take responsability for the medication and its accuracy from the moment I pick it up at the pharmacy to the minute I hand it to the patient. There are federal and state laws protecting patients from having medications stolen.
Last month I counted every persons pain medications when they were brought home from various pharmacies for different clients. I was absolutely expecting the count to be correct. On three different medications, there were less pills in the bottle that the count on the bottle said. One prescription was missing 37 of 90 pills! This took place in multiple pharmacies. For that reason, we are responsable for counting the pills before leaving the pharmacy.
To bring the tray to the counter amd count the pills in the bottle literally takes less than one minute. I stand in line while pharamcists gossip with shoppers about other peoples live- and i wait patiently. So why am I sending this email?
The pharmacist working right this very minute just told me that if I want the pills counted everytime, that I need to go to a différent pharmacy. Why? Why is this extra ONE minute so hard for him? No other pharmaciies have this issue. I have had clients in Salem hospital, Lancaster family médical, Kaiser, Rite-aid, and multiple Safeway locations.
Why is this such a problem for this pharmacist? I ask for the tray to count them myself- I dont ask the employees to do anything. So why would I need to switch pharmacies because I cover my back when picking up and dropping off medications?
This is very concerning. How many people are too scared to ask and dont get their full prescription? I do not understand why it would matter to an innocent person doing their job.
This has happened in multiple occasions. I believe there are issues with some pharmacies or pharmacists. There is no reason that sick people do not deserve all of their medication. I am going to keep asking up the line and to the news if necessary. At the very least, this is horrible service. I demand something be done to resolve this issue. People with no advocates are getting treated worse and lose more.
Why is it not possible for the pills to be counted when being picked up? And why is such a horrible person with a very bad attitude representing your company?
