Where is the quality control?
I'm working on a doctoral dissertation. To save time and my mind, I decided to pay NoNotes.com to transcribe about 20 hours of interviews for me.
While the early parts of transcriptions were acceptable--maybe 90-95% accurate, as the interviews progress, all sense is removed from the transcripts, which eventually devolve into a jumble of nonsensical gibberish. One example--a subject said, "of stereotypes" (it is loud and clear on the recording, which has virtually no background noise). NoNotes.com decided that this should be transcribed as "from clustery types." "Kuwait and Bahrain" became "Quick, again!"
So my question again is, where is the quality control? Half the time, there are no initials entered to figure out who transcribed and who edited.
Really, what's the point, when I have to listen to the recordings and RE-TRANSCRIBE whole passages, when that's what I have paid this company to do?!?
I spoke too soon. NoNotes initially offered a 50% refund. This somehow became 10%. Their "review" of the documents versus the actual audio recordings yielded few results. In the end, I spent over US$1000 for crappy transcripts that were lucky to hit the 60% mark on accuracy. I had to use them as a "guide" and then go back through the actual recordings to find out what was actually said.
They run a virtual office--no actual office space involved--and have a virtual receptionist who either doesn't pass on messages or they just don't bother to return calls.
Avoid these scam artists at all costs! The old adage still holds true, "You get what you pay for." Do yourself a favor and pay a little extra to have a REAL company do your transcribing!
