I was in SMD104 "Technical Skills for Social Media" earlier this year at Seneca College. This was the most ridiculous course I have ever taken. It was taught by a high school art teacher, Fred Galang. The course was supposed to be for a graduate certificate for university graduates.

This guy drew on the computer. He was not a technical expert. He did not even design his own webpage. He told us to buy a theme for $50 and put words and pictures into it. The rest of the course was about drawing stuff on photoshop, illustrator etc. He talked about writing webpages, but he didn't even show use how to use, say, Dreamweaver or something like that.

The worst part was the grading. He attacked the real tech people in his class for showing real "technical skills". All I did was go into the html code and added a picture. (He asked for a picture in the assignment. He said Tumblr was good because we could customize the html code.) So I customized the code and added a picture. I showed it to him. He did not even understand what I did. He panicked. Then he changed the grading criteria to include 100% on style and content, and 0% on technical skill. He used that as an excuse to give me a very low grade. He said my picture was ugly, my project name was nonsense, my topic was nonsense...

And then he made up all these excuses about how this course was about marketing... There was no marketing element in his course. I enrolled in this program to learn marketing. There was nothing about marketing in his course. The only thing he knew was to draw. (and his art wasn't even that good)

And this course was absolutely not about writing apps. The info session mentioned about writing an app, but it was not as advertised.

So stay away from this teacher. Stay away from this school. Don't take his classes. This guy is nuts.

He is an artist, sour and prejudice against people with tech background.

"In essence: He's an artist pretending to teach tech-related subjects, then failed the tech student on purpose to cover up his fraud. He shouldn't be allowed to teach, not even an art class, because of unfair grading and his conduct."

"'For the most part, you failed because you exerted an intellectual superiority over your peers and your teacher.' He admitted that he failed a student (me) on purpose because the student was too good. Can anyone get more ridiculous than that?"

"Fred Galang did not attack my technical skill. He didn't dare. He said my art was bad, and then my project name was nonsense... But the course was called 'Technical Skills for Social Media'. So it looked like I had no technical skill. And the artist did?"

"...Filipino immigrant. Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts..."

Update: How ridiculous can a teacher get?

You have to see it to believe it.

Somehow this high school art teacher was able to convince the college to let him teach "technical skills for social media".

He taught html coding. Then he taught how to blog. The course was extremely simple at the technical level. But when I showed him my customization code for my assignment, he knew I was much better than him at coding.

So he turned the course into an art course, and graded 100% on art and content. The course was called "technical skills". He graded 0% on technical skills. He did that on purpose to give me 0 point for my work.

Then he criticized my art, my project name... anything but technical skills. But even in terms of art, he graded art on a double standard. My art was not that bad compared to the rest of the class (with only 6 students.) This was an extreme case of unfair grading.

He used art to create an illusion that I could not pass the course.

So I complained. I even had his written correspondences to prove that he did that on purpose. You thought the schools would take action against him. But no. This teacher made up tons of excuses. He even made up a story saying I breached academic integrity. I had to keep debunking his lies. No one cared to fire this guy.

He was obviously lying. He singled me out and failed me on purpose. The course was called "technical skills", so it looked like I had no technical skills. But in fact it was taught by an artist who kept saying my art was bad. Then he lied and accused me of breach of academic integrity. That was the most frustrating part. It was a obvious case of teacher bullying student. But no matter how I complained, people didn't seem to care.

People probably thought, "The teacher must be right. The student must be stupid."

The following are actual things he wrote in his written correspondences:

"For the most part, you failed because you exerted an intellectual superiority over your peers and your teacher."

"My experience as an artist and a designer is the reason why I teach at Seneca"

"Your past experience in programming is of no consequence to the underlying goals of SMD104. It is not a requirement in the course, nor is it stated in the college’s course materials."

"The course isn't a web or app development course but offers a basic understanding of social media sites like Tumblr and the basics of the Wordpress dashboard."

"Anti-Aging Lane is a problematic name for your business angle as well. It doesn’t makes sense at all and the same goes for the logo."
"it’s design is simply confusing. The same goes for your masthead / logo design."

"According to the academic policy set forth by Seneca College, she should have been given a mark of 0 for breach of academic integrity."

The course was called "technical skills for social media". His syllabus was on html coding and blogging. My art wasn't even that bad.

I had never met an instructor this ridiculous. Not only was it a waste of money to take his course, but a lot of frustration. I wrote a lot of complaints because of this guy. It's a big waste of my time, and a lot of anger.
