Today I received an email from Macy’s that was an e-receipt
for a purchase from a Macy’s store in Maryland by someone with the same name. I’m
in my office two states away, I immediately think that fraudulent transaction
just occurred, so I don’t think I’m overreacting here. My name, my email,
NOT the last four digits of my credit card.

Fraud or worse, IDENTITY THEFT. I freak out. Cancel work meetings and hit the
phone. I called the Macy’s store that appeared on the e-receipt. The automated system…hours of operation…I hit
00000 in hopes that it takes me to a live person. I was transferred to a customer service
representative who took the receipt number, put me on hold and tracked down the
transaction. She confirmed the transaction, at this point I’m
panicking. I want to know who, what,
how and who fell fix this. The rep tells me that there is nothing wrong, not to
worry it’s no fraud. It’s an internal system issue with the e-receipts.

The rep shares that she has reported the issue internally
and not to worry, I will no longer receive e-receipts. HELLO, if it wasn’t for
this e-receipt I would have not been alerted there was an issue. The question at hand is what happened, how
come my name is used, how come my email account is associated….do I see a
TARGET credit card issue here? As I ask
more questions, the rep can’t really answer. So she takes my number and says
that she would call me back to confirm that the report went in and that I
should not worry. Then hangs up.

20 minutes later she calls and left a message saying that
she has submitted the complaint. Huh? Now what?

I’m still left clueless and Macy’s is still making
money. If not fraud, Macy’s e-receipts
data base breach? If emails and names
are correct in this mistake, what ensures the customer that other information
is not being misused?

Macy’s I need answers.
