Outskirts Press Publishing, or lack there of

I received an email stating that after consulting with legal department, copyright researcher, and production managers they were not going to publish my book. A full refund would be given. They directed me to the person I had been working with, Jamie Rath, to discuss the refund and reasoning.

I emailed, called multiple times (even though her extension goes to a different person's voice mail), and have not received a call. The only email was from Jamie Rath, it said she would reach out to management team to discuss the matter.

It seems like a pass the buck, keep the money, and not return any calls situation.

Jonathan Rooker

Desired outcome: I would like to get the refund. Secondly, the reason behind the decision.

Outskirts Press Outskirts Press' long term commitment to its writers

Two things that this author was not aware of which would have made all the difference in whom he would have selected as a publisher:

Unlike with most publishers, Outskirts Press requires all their authors to pay an annual fee as long as they (the authors) live for their on-line books.

Immediately after the death of the author, unless heirs or friends continue those yearly payments, all his works are removed from the net: his publications become as dead as he is.

Desired outcome: A way to provide life after death for a writer's works.

Outskirts Press Colleen Goulet/Synopsis on back of book error

Terry Mott-Bellin/MEDIEVAL LOVE & WAR

I finally got my book published after a year of communication with Colleen Goulet. I paid thousands of dollars. I even paid for a professional employee of another publication firm to help me with the process because I was having trouble trying to get the PITCH on the back of my book NOT THE SYNOPSIS!

Seriously? Colleen doesn't know the difference?

I want this problem corrected immediately! How are WE going to sell any books if the entire story is revealed!

This is an unbelievable disappointment after all the time and money I spent with your company. Please have someone correct this mistake ASAP!

Thank you,

Terry Bellin

Desired outcome: The Pitch/book blurb/teaser - Whatever you want to call it - MUST REPLACE the synopsis on the back of my book!!!

Outskirts Press royalties not received

I have published 3 books with outskirts press and have received one royalty check more than a year ago. However, when I check my author page with them, they say they have paid me completely for every book of mine they have sold. This is a lie! I have not received these monies. I have inquired multiple times to no avail. Their accounting department will not answer and leave a voice mail saying to email them. I have emailed them multiple times! I have also contacted two of the directors... All to no avail. Also, I have contacted their "chat" format numerous times and no one has been any help at all. Their accounting department doesn't answer their phone; they require you to send an email and say they will get back with you... They are withholding my royalty checks and saying they have paid them. I have requested in writing from them a copy of my books sold, their royalty, their payment to me and verification they were cashed. I have never received this. They show they have paid me and they have not! I am beyond frustrated with them and have contacted several people numerous times to get this resolved. Help!

I read all these complaints and I agree. I have spent soo much money to get my wonderful stories out in print, and the books were indeed lovely, well printed and priced for the public to be able to afford them. But as they told me my books would show up in Amazon, well who cares? Amazon has done nothing for my books. Oh, if I spend more money they will. Outskirts will throw words like Books-a-million at you and etc they are just words. Selling my books is awful. Everything I have sold was on Face Book. I signed my books, and paid postage, but I can not do that now due to the cost of postage. Now, I am told that Ingram has increased its cost to Outskirts, so they are increasing the cost to me. My books will cost more for me to get. And it goes on and on. There are too many good publishing companies out there. I have a book ready for publishing, it will be my fifth and I will not deal with Outskirts Press again.

Hello, My name is Tawanna Bumpus. I had you guys to publish a book for me in 2005. It is entitled (Tawanna's Children's short story collection) . I trusted you guys to publish my book. I even paid cash to have it published I have not heard nothing from you guys about my book. I still have my stories and pictures and book that you finished but did not edit it. So it got terrible reviews. I want to know, why I never received any of the money it may have incurred. I have not heard anything about money from you guys. I am hurt! and I want all my information about Tawanna's Children's short story collection mailed back to me immediately! If not I must take legal action because of the way I was treated. I called and left a message, still waiting for a call. One thing I do know, is that what you did to me, you will do the same thing to someone else when they get their lawyer involved I will join them and you will pay! My number is [protected]. I need to heard from you! Thanks Tawanna Bumpus

Outskirts Press Not very responsive and doesn't seem to be organized or coordinated to well!

I;ve contacted Outskirts to publish my book over 2 years ago. The original contact (Jaime Belt) does free lance work for Outskirts and she took a long time responding to my correspondence (maybe as much as a month between messages. I finally signed a contract (over a year ago) to have my book published (actually it was the Diamond Pkg.) and I was to receive $300 as an incentive to go Diamond (which I never received)! About 8 months ago, I sent to the Parker, CO headquarters a "hard copy" of my book to publish and then I sent in a later copy (revision with many changes and corrections). During all this time, I did not hear from Lisas Buckley, my author rep. until a month later I got a transcription of my book, BUT IT WAS THE ORIGINAL BOOK that was not to be published.
I told Lisa B. that they transcribed the wrong book and not the latest one that I sent in. I paid money for the transcription, but I feel that since they did not transcribe the proper book information, I should receive a refund. It took me over one week to transcribe corrections and additions to my book. The Outskskirts transcription had many, many little mistakes (spelling, wrong words, incorrect grammar or words and sentences left out, etc., etc.). During this whole time, I kept emailing (replies) to Lisa B., but she was very unresponsive - sometimes taking over a week to answer many of my questions, which many times was incomplete - meaning she didn't directly answer most of my questions and directions. I don't know how intelligent she is or how competent she is, but maybe she's too busy and disorganized (when it comes to my book). I paid almost $2, 000 to have may book published (over a yr. ago) and it looks as if we're still on PAGE ONE! Lisa told me not to send in my transcription (PDF?) and how do I send it in! She claimed incorrectly that I said that there was only a few pages of correction from THEIR TRANSCRIPTION, but I said that since you transcribed from the wrong (old hard copy - which is no where near the last hard copy I sent in)! I sent in another hard copy of my final book and Lisa told me not to send it in (since she mistakenly said that I only had a few corrections to make from their wrong transcription)! I'm really sorry that I went to Outskirts to publish my book. It's taken too long and the communication and progress between Outskirts and myself has been EXTREMELY POOR! By the time my book gets published (if it gets to that level at all), much of the information I have int that book is becoming obsolete!

I talked to a woman at Outskirt today and everything sounded hunky dory and am right now considering whether to take a chance on them. But even with only a handful of reviews, all of which seem negative, I am not impressed and am having serious second thoughts. I went through a bad - awful experience - with Strategic Book Publishing Company with my first novel and swore I'd never use a SPC again. After reading even a few reviews, as I say, I think I made the right decision back and should stick with it. And Outskirt is supposed to be top-of-the line self-publishing. Maybe they're all just GD crooks. Ya think?

Outskirts Press book publishing

I published with them back in 2007. What I did not like is that when I was asked to submit changes, I made a couple of simple mistakes and re-submitted for publication. Now, you would think that the person entering those changes would have noted the simple mistakes as a favor and made them right. Nope - they do exactly what you request. Also, I do not feel the Outskirts should send me a bill every year to warehouse my books, which I doubt they are warehosing in the first place, since the books are on demand printing. This is just their way of sucking money from the authors even when not a single issue was sold. No - they do not advertise your book. I spent thousands to have my book advertised at various shows and not a single issue was sold, Maybe one. Just publish with Amazon's Booksurge and you won't be threatened with warehousing fees on top of publishing costs.

If you are not looking for errors, you don't seem to be interested in guaranteeing a quality product. I would think that would be a top priority if you want to promote yourself as a top-of-the-line self-publishing company. I find that an astonishing admission. One that certainly gives me pause as to whether I should take a chance on Outskirt Press.

Also, I'm surprised that you're telling the author he's "responsible for promoting" his book. The woman I conversed with about signing up with Outskirt said something like 25000 outlets are notified. True enough, the author is like an entrepreneur, but he's under the impression that he can rely on Outskirt for help. Presumably, he doesn't have access to all the publicity outlets Outskirt claims to have access to, so he's enlisting the services of the company in that regard. Frankly, it's tantamount to saying the company will make promises, take your money, but then you're on your own. Good luck.

I went through something very similar with my first novel and Strategic Publishing Company. They promised world-wide promotion and that reviewers would be alerted, and on and on. If they ever sold a single copy, I never heard about it. And it wasn't just me: I found out afterwards that the company had been sued numerous times for doing the same thing to other authors. It's a swift kick in a delicate part of the anatomy by people who basically couldn't care less about the author and the thousands of hours he spends grinding away. It's all a con. Just be sure to read the reviews - like I've just done.

Outskirts Press over represents itself as the # 1 press.

Dealing with them is like riding with a lost Taxi Cab driver.

The meter is running and arriving at your destination, doubtful.

Hi, OP:

My name is Elise, and I'm the Manager of Author Support at Outskirts Press. We encourage all of our authors to purchase our copy editing services - during that time, a copy editor goes through your work with a fine-toothed comb. Of course, our editors are human so there is still a small margin of error. However, our production team is responsible for taking your manuscript (assuming that it has already been edited if you didn't purchase our services) and formatting it into a book that can be printed. Unfortunately, that does not include looking for any errors in the manuscript. This is how we keep our production process as quick as possible for all authors.

For the fee you are charged every year, it's an annual storage fee that is paid to maintain your print-on-demand status. We don't warehouse any books, in the traditional sense. If at any point you want to "turn off" your print-on-demand status, you can certainly opt to do so. At that point, of course, your book will no longer be distributed/sold online. The reason BookSurge/CreateSpace charges a similar fee if you opt for wide distribution with them (i.e. selling your book somewhere other than Amazon).

As a self-publishing author, you have taken steps toward becoming an entrepreneur. As such, you are responsible for promoting yourself and your book. There are many ways you can promote your book that won't cost you anything and others you may have to pay for. If you want to try again with our marketing services, we are more than happy to help. Our phone number is available on our website. We hope to hear from you.
