Publishing contracts
I prepaid for a publishing contract ($2, 398.00) to Dog Ear Publishing LLC in 2016. I attempted to upload my completed manuscript in March 2021 and found Dog Ear Publishing has disappeared.
I published a print-on-demand and ebook with Dog Ear Publishing in 2013. This month, I see Amazon no longer shows these paper & electronic books (Tattoo — Journeys on My Mind by Tina Marie L. Lamb) for sale.
The Sales Manager Megan Weddle has not returned my voicemail. Other Dog Ear Publishing phone numbers, and email addresses and the website, including the link to my author account (with my documentation) are no longer in service. My email inquiries have been returned as Delivery Failures. The named agency rep Miles Nelson said he had a complaint against the owners too. Ray Robinson ("the owner") did not respond to my letter, but signed for it (at his home address (13739 Magic Stallion Drive, Carmel, IN 46032-9024) I have enclosed the best documentation I could find.
Dog Ear Publishing LLC is an active Indiana Domestic Limited-Liability Company, File #2004061600190, in Indianapolis, listed at 4010 86th Street, Suite H, but the most recent address I find is 4011 Vincennes Road in Indianapolis IN 46268.
Thank you. — Christine M. Agnitti
writing as Tina Marie L. Lamb
Desired outcome: I am seeking the $2398.00 return from future book contract paid in 2016; the electronic records for the 2013 book (Print: ISBN [protected] and Ebook: ISBN [protected]).
Want my production files
I am a former publisher of Dog Ear publishing since 2010. I was not notified of them going out of business and not given the original print ready production files of my book titled A Sense of Comfort for You and Your Loved Ones. My name is Frank Nelson. My email is [protected]@yahoo.com. I would like to obtain my production files.
Desired outcome: obtain my production files
Ordering
My last successful order was in March of 2020. I'm now trying to re-order more books but the website says "this book is no longer available". It also said that in March so I had to e-mail a Chris Robinson to place an order. When I got my last order I was surprised that Dog Ear was NOT the publisher but Book Plate. I tried looking at Book Plate's website but the website has been disabled! Thank God I saved all of my book files and I'm now creating a 2nd edition of my book on Kindle Publishing.

My books
I have been trying for months to get in touch with Dog Ear Publishing. I tried emails, with no reply, phone numbers are no longer in service and now I see the website has been taken down. Haven't received royalty payments in some time. And now with the website down there is no chance of getting prints through production files. What are authors to do about prints?

Dog Ear publishing has published my books for the last 4 years. Suddenly, none of their phone numbers or email addresses work. Their website is also appears to be shut down. I can't get any of my production files to continue the printing of my book. I also haven't received any royalty payments for 2019. It still shows that they are selling my book on...

After publishing five books with Dog Ear, I have finally been bilked out of all profit payments due me for 2019. It is impossible to get a hold of anyone for explanation, particularly Ray Robinson, the company's owner, who has refused to respond to numerous emails and phone calls. I have also spoken to other company representatives who merely refer me back to Mr. Robinson. This refusal to pay royalties and failure to respond to complaints has affected many other Dog Ear authors, resulting in its "F" rating by the Indiana Better Business Bureau and the revocation of its accredidation. I have also registered a complaint with the Indiana Better Business Bureau.

Dog Ear Publishing has excellent intake information, and the product it produces looks very good. That's the upside. Now for the downside.
Dog Ear has not delivered book orders on time almost ever in the several years I worked with them. They say "can be printed within 24 hours", but usually is within a week. I paid over $100 for an expedited order, but the guy who was supposed to get the book shipment got a note the shipment would take an extra week - what did I pay for? Oh, and... Dog Ear did not send me the same notice. So I did not know the $100 expedited shipment would be late until a possible client called me furious I did not deliver books.
Worse is how the staff is. I have months and months of emails where they were like the keystone cops - sending me the wrong files to review (someone else's cover, someone else's file), sending me an old file when I had already sent back edits. I would respectfully return, work it out, but eventually they started to get testy with me. There was no one to raise the issue with because they are all friends there, really unprofessional, and the guy ended up defending the woman whose crazy emails I produced for him to see - he refused to read them. Acted as if he was above that sort of thing.
Their 888 number on the website sent me to a woman who acted annoyed and said I was supposed to select one of the number options, but there were no number options, and when I told her she was annoyed - not helpful. Again, a bunch of juveniles.
It's too bad. There are things they do right, but they are cynical about their clients' right to expect good service and clear commitments. I wouldn't suggest them to anyone ever.
Options include Create Space which is very good finally, or other groups.
Dog ear publishing - fantastic
I received my complimentary copies of "Legacy of the Light", and all I can say is: FANTASTIC! The book looks EXACTLY as I hoped it would. It is a bit surreal for me to see something that has been a part of my life for some years actually done as a book. I have gone from someone who "is writing a book, " to someone who "has written a book." A nice change...

I purchased Google ad service. Over 625 clicks went directly from interested parties to my web site (this company had created) at Dog Ear and only resulted in one book sale. That one sale cost me over $500. Hey, I thought I was supposed to be making money? Advice for the novice: don't get linked up with any P.O.D. company that doesn't use a third party pay source that will give you an accounting of how much they took in. Why? You'll never know just how much of your product they actually sold and how much (of your money) they actually kept. In my situation I was trusting them to be honest...don't get fooled like I did. These guys have numerous BBB complaints.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I am having the same issues as well. I haven't received one royalty check to this day. I have contacted Ray Robinson and Amber Ortner of Dog Ear Publishing and my calls and my emails are never returned. I feel so bad because my book is selling and I'm being taken advantage of. Publishing a book is not cheap at all, so for them to take this kind of unethical and unprofessional approach is hurtful. What could we do? Who could we contact?
I just published with them, my book as been out for a month...and now they are giving me total radio silence. Before that Ray was talking to me personally on the phone, very supportive. Now - nothing.
I have a book event/release planned for September 21st...I've sunk thousands of dollars into this venture.
What should I do?
Authors, you can contact me at The Real Kostroff (at) Gmail. A group of us have gathered together to share resources and coordinate actions.
I had a prepaid book contract with Dog Ear Publishing paid in 2016. I tried to send my manuscript on Wednesday evening and learned they had gone out of business. I filed an online complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office and sent a note to my credit card provider. Any other ideas would be welcome. I paid $2934.00 and I’ll be there are more people like me who feel like idiots now.
Here's an article that was just published in the IndyStar about DogEar. Please share it! https://www.indystar.com/story/news/investigations/2019/08/07/dog-ear-publishing-accused-owing-thousands-self-published-authors/1860676001/
I published my book with them in 2016. But I have been having a similar problem of late. I have not received a check for a year, and I cannot get anyone at the company to return calls or emails. What have you done? How can I even cancel with them if I can't even get a response? Help.
Sadly, I have to add my name to those who've been the victims of Dog Ear's unethical practices.
A while after my book was published, it occurred to me that I was not receiving royalty payments in accordance with Dog Ear's posted schedule. After months of hounding, I finally received a check. Then it happened again. Months without a payment. This time, I got no response to my inquiries. I had a lawyer send a letter. No response. They were contacted by the Alliance of Independent Authors. No response. The Better Business Bureau has now REVOKED THEIR ACCREDITATION. They've been reported by several of us to the Attorney General of Indiana, and there are more actions to come.
I've had to contact them to cancel our contract and take my book out of print. I will now be publishing with a new company, at considerable expense. And I still have not been payed overdue royalties.
I promise, I tried every possible way to make this situation end amicably.
Please, please don't work with Dog Ear. I don't want any writer to go through what I'm going through.
Please keep my notified as to what is happening with any legal action.
I have to take the same route, sadly to say.
I filed with both Indiana BBB and Indiana Attorney General. BBB said that they had to close the complaint due to lack of response from Dog Ear. I am still waiting to hear back from AG's office. They gave me a case number and seem to be acting on it. Who knows? Anything form your end? Have you gotten the names and book titles of other Dog Ear authors being scammed?
Did anyone get any legal advice or know of any legal actions that's being carried out?
They list an address in Indianapolis. so they may well be another hidden outlet of Authors Solutions. This whole industry rests on dubious ethical ground. They are extra friendly and helpful BEFORE you pay but they switch to a different style after you do. I am clearly a Vanity fiction Author who just wanted to preserve my books after my death but I know the truth: most self published books are of very poor quality and they rarely sell beyond the family and close friends circle. Yet most authors believe that they are gifted writers who found it impossible to be considered by an agent or editorial and that the vanity industry provides a serious second chance of being recognized and even become a professional writer. They show you examples, critiques at the NYT, prices won, ... The cases are mostly true but you might as well tell the authors that they could win the lottery, which is easier. But once you have paid $2000 or more, the house continues to offer addition services that would increase the chances of success. Just a little extra payment and your chances grow. Never forget that the vanity publishers do not make money out of selling books, only OUT OF YOU, the naïve writers.
I googled up the title of my book and (surprise, surprise) I found that it is available in French and German. Who is listed as the publisher? Dogear. I fired them 8 years ago! My work was transferred to another POD, Infinity. How many books sold? God only knows...and he isn't saying. Unless there is a 3rd party involved that keep audit/accounting records, bend over and get a big tube of K-Y jelly and prepare to be...Older and sadder
I recommend Outskirts Publishing, they are rated number 1. They communicate well over the phone and by email and told me to take my time on the manuscript since I am revising it slightly. They also send out emails all the time for free services like a custom book cover or help writing the synopsis and biography when it goes to publishing. Although I have not yet submitted my manuscript, so far they have been awesome and again, they are rated number 1 in self publishing.

Keep a look out for my book, hopefully by Christmas! I don't want to give away the title but my last name is Jalbert! Good luck all, this is an important time in all our lives. My writing has been my dream since High School and I have been approached by so many publishers. Authorhouse being one of the worst. So many publishing companies fall under that umbrella so beware. Do a google search and see for yourself.
Good luck all!
Does anyone have a lawsuit against dog ear? I'm looking for an attorney.
Me too!
Dog Ear Publishing does not perform as they advertise. I ghost wrote a book for my brother which we published through Dog Ear. Weeks after it was out, copies purchased and shipped to my brother, and the listing on Amazon, it was still showing as out of stock on Amazon. it is now approaching two months with the same situation. When I complained, the condescending message began: "A big part of our business involves educating our clients on the complexities of publishing and helping them confront challenges if ones arise. Your emails, this one and your previous, provide a good opportunity to direct your discontent where it belongs –Amazon. No buck-passing here; ..." followed by a lot of buck passing. I trust, Amazon's business acumen far more and can absolutely advise authors to stay away from Dog Ear.
By the way, in the same email was the proverbial legal scare tactic: "All this said, I hope any reviews are directed appropriately and avoid libelous/defamatory speak." As you can see by this review comment, their veiled threat doesn't scare me.
Ripoff is underestamating
Sadly I feel good to see I am not alone here!
I work very hard to write about my life to give hope to others, to find out that my editor and Dog Ear publishing have decided to contract between each other and not to tell me about it. the package I picked did included advertisement, naturally after (thank god) a short time with help of friend I found out about the contract, that was signed with out me been included.
Well, I put stop on production, since I am the only person with the copy right, but I still see my book been sold as new after even the publisher received a letter from attorney to stop any production of any kind!
According to Dog Ear my book did not sale at all, yet I see places in the web having my book in a new condition for sale such as amazon and Barns and the numbers I got from Dog Ears do not match!
I am shock to see it and wonder what is the meaning of copyright?
How many new book must be sold to call it infringement?
Why none of us authors has ever done anything about it, or is there anything we can do to stop them at all?
Personally I can not pay for the attorney fee, however I am determined to put stop on this and living in my car to save my rent (as little as it might be) money and pay a visit to one!
Lightning Source and Ingram are in to this and they are the one I am going after.

Attention all victims of Dog Ear Publishing. I'm trying to get us all in touch so we can pursue our overdue royalties together. If you're interested, email me, Michael Kostroff, at TheRealKostroff@gmail.com. I'm consulting with several attorneys and have some very effective resources.
The traditional way of publishing seems to be the best and most respectable, efficient way of getting your work placed before the masses. However, we s humans tend to want instant gratification which leads us to make hasty decisions. The predators in the publishing world feed of of that very weakness we tend to have and create money pools for themselves. I have gone with PublishAmerica for my first book. From the beginning they were very professional, concerned and remained in very close contact throughout the publishing phases. At no time did they ask me for any for money, in fact, they offered me an advance. The book has been published but I have not received any royalty monies as of yet. I will keep you updated with my progress. One other good publishing firm I heard of is Black Hawk Publishing so you all may want to check into it. I did send them a query letter but did not get a response of any kind as of yet and it's been 4 weeks so far. Get your copy of "St. Moses, Handicapped Hunter" today at www.barnesandnobles.com or www.amazon.com and everywhere else fine books are sold. Enjoy!
After a very careful and lengthy research, I decided to publish my first children's book with AuthorHouse. At first, I thought they were so professional and so efficient. Then, when the publishing started, I realized that some of the important issues that I stressed on several times in my numerous conversations with them, were completely disregarded. I was devastated as the whole harmony of the book was destroyed due to these mistakes. Of course, they wanted more money to fix the problem. I chose not to pay. It has been 3 months now and my book is published but I am still waiting to receive my free copies and the rest of the items that I payed for. Throughout the entire process I have dealt with numerous representatives and each tells me a different story, putting the blame on someone else. I am glad I went through this experience as I have learned a great deal. I will never go for a self-publishing company again. Believe in yourselves, if your material is good there is a good chance, that someday, it will get published the traditional way. Good luck to all!
WOW! I have been in contact with Author House as late as yesterday about submitting my manuscript. Thanks for the warnings. Rodney
Does anyone know how to break the contract with AuthorHouse?
I just got off the phone with a publicist that said I had made a poor choice in self-publishing with AuthorHouse. She suggested that I try to break the contract, get the book professionally edited and submit it for sale as an ebook at a low price. She also advised me to move on to the next book and find a small publishing house, or, even better, get an agent for the next novel.
After reading all your stories, I must say, I am so very disappointed at myself for not reading more into the AuthorHouse reviews. Does anyone know how to break the publishing/printing contract with this horrible company?
PublishAmerica has been good for my project thus far believe it or not!
Most comments are full of errors. A writer must re-read, edit, AND have others proof read the material.
The excuse of "not being perfect" doesn't fly. Do your homework and correct and learn before submitting.
There must be at least one self-publishing company that is reliable, produces on time, and is responsible
about fulfilling promises! Which one is it?
Contact the attorney general's office in your state. You can email your complaint on-line. All of which can be google and is easily accessible.
Good luck and more over be patient as Rome was not built in a day.
I had an idea for a book. I found a illustrator and made it happen. This happened in 2005 and I had some problems when sombody fell off a ladder on top of me taking me out of work. Project halted. Just picking up where I left off I went to Amazon.com and found a book
eerily similar in Title and content to my book. I did copywrite my book in 2005 when I finished to avoid a problem. I found the publisher Dog ear probably looked up the title in the copywrite database and changed the words around just a little and the story around just a little. I don't know what to do. The book that is now selling has used and new books for sale. That means it was a good idea and it is
selling. What do I do? I can't afford an attorney. Is anybody going to get a class action going. If so please post the attorney's name so I can
call them. Rock and a hard place. No that was NOT the name of my book.
