This horse "rescue" is far from what they claim. While they are an actual 501c3 it is amazing that they have been able to maintain this status. They have no records or books for the past couple of years. The money raised as donations goes to paying the owners bills, truck payments, and credit cards. She adopts out horses but never relinquishes ownership and states in her adoption agreements that she can come take the horse at any time without any reason.
You can find news stories about how badly they need money and how different storms has devastated them and caused her animals to lose weight. However, one storm does not cause horses to lose hundreds of pounds. Horses that were in her care for over 2 years were severely underweight and were still being ridden during trail rides multiple times a day. Horses have died in her care and she hides it from everyone. She still has dead horses listed on her website as available for sponsorship. She was kicked out of a property for not paying the landlord rent, forcing him to go into foreclosure. Luckily, other people at that ranch took over and saved him from losing his property. Then the property she moved to she was kicked out of for not obtaining a business liscense. And while warned he continued to operate and do trail rides daily.
She claims one of her horses came from Disney. This too is not true, Disney refutes this and assures they know where all of their horses are currently. This "Disney" horse was about 800 lbs underweight at one point and she had owned him for over 5 years. She had horses and ponies that had gone over 8 months without getting their feet trimmed. At one point she had 20+ horses on 4 acres and was not feeding them grain. Simply 2 bales of hay twice a day. Then blamed the weather as to why her horses were skinny. She does not routinely vaccinate her horses and often lets their coggins lapse. All she cares about is a dollar in her pocket. She has fooled a lot of people so just be careful if you come across her. She may seem nice and come across as though she is doing good for horses, but ask to see her books. Before you donate to her ask to see where the money goes. Although she'll probably lie which she does quite often. She has false adoptions on we website under "success stories" as well. This woman has made a career out of lying and taking money from people. So just beware and please everyone check into rescues before you give your money or precious horses to them! It is a sad world when people manipulate others just for a dollar. A rescue is supposed to be in it for the horses. Not the almighty dollar.

Between March 2014 and the end of October 2014, she had three horses dead and buried on my farm in Pierson, FL. In November 2014, she disposed of all horses. They were thin, thin, thin. During the time she had my farm, the stalls were not mucked out. There was manure 1 foot deep in the 12" barn isle. She never once bush-hogged any of the pastures. At one point in time, she had 44 (!) horses on my 10.6 acre farm of which only about 7 or so acres as fenced. It was astounding. A judge legally terminated the agreement for cause. She is now Dawn Schmertmann Small and living in SC.. She was also evicted from the Spring Garden Ranch in DeLeon Springs, FL before she came to Pierson, FL. I think that makes three trashed farms in a row and three farms left holding the bag for thousands and thousands of dollars in unpaid rent or property damages. The State Vet was involved as she had no coggins on horses that she was transported from DeLeon Springs, Fl to Pierson, FL. She abandoned two stallions on my property in Pierson, FL when she vacated. She also failed to maintain insurance on the property as required.
