I'm a former student of manipal university, melaka (Melaka manipal medical college). It is with great regret that I attended the "international university", which only had one college (Medical). I completed my studies only because I had already commenced them and paid money, so as not to waste time. There are a number of issues I must express:
1. This is not an international university - it is a private college for malaysian students, with only up to 5 international students in the entire college, many of whom had malaysian origin. Hence, you are expected to know bahasa melayu, and follow malaysian culture - generally conservative and extremely religious, regardless of religion (Islam, hinduism, christianity, sikhism). Mind you, the malaysian mentality can be very annoying - they are an extremely nosey bunch (They'll find out everything about you behind your back before meeting you, and they'll double check when they see you. It's common for them to ask about your parents' occupation, citizenship, migration history, your marks etc.), they expect you to conform to their attitude (Many men are alpha males, women are oppressed), to conform to the group/mob mentality (No room for individuality). They generally lack creativity or substance in their conversation - instead they question everything with "why", speak 3 word sentences followed by "la" etc. And think you're showing off if you speak proper english. They also tend to study a lot, but pretend not to, and actively flatter others in a bid to discourage them from attaining success.
Malaysians are extremely racist (Not all, but many are). You will notice that they are segregated into malays, chinese, indians, and they all hate each other and hate malaysia (Except the malays), but they act extremely patriotic and get extremely offended when they ask a foreigner if they like malaysia and they say no.
Most of the malaysian students can’t speak proper english. They expect you to bring yourself down to their standard. They’ll try and destroy your confidence. They’ll even ask you to define each word you say to them. The problem is, you will have to rely on them for translation. You are dependent on them, you are at their mercy. Do you want to be in such a position?
2. It's like a school - but worse. You will be seated alphabetically or by roll number amongst the same people for 5 years. Even if you request to change because you're not happy with your group and it's affecting your studies, the college will refuse to accommodate you, as they are rigid on their "administrative efficiency"
3. Miss out on your golden years - university is more than just study, it's about discovering who you are and being free to express yourself. Freedom of speech will not be tolerated here. Also, you will be sent out from class if you have even the tiniest 5 o'clock shadow beard - and expected to explain why you didn't shave. "because I want to have a beard, it's my sense of fashion" will not make sense to them. You must dress up as formally as possible, like a professor with a tie, labcoat etc., while other international universities give you freedom to dress, freedom to sit where you like, etc.
4. They even maintain a strict >90% attendance rate, and class if mon-sat, 8am-5pm. If you're unwell, have issues, need time for yourself etc. - it doesn't matter. If you didn't meet the attendance rate, you won't be eligible for the exams.
5. No facilities or internal organisations - no such thing as counselors, rowing club, student societies etc. Even schools have counselors.
6. If you're an international student, they will not help you. You are seen as second class while in class. Students are predominantly from wealthy backgrounds, and are very cliquey - they are generally from the same pre-med colleges e. G. Taylors college, sunway college etc. Students tend to be extremely envious of anyone with a foreign passport and see you as easy prey. If you disagree with one of them, all students will gang up against you and isolate you. If you explain to the staff that you are finding it difficult to get through without the cooperation of other students (E. G. When they put you in groups, and you need to speak to patients in their native tongue etc.), staff will blame you - "if they're against you, you must have done something. The problem must be with you". Zero support from the university. They don't have the balls to pull students to the side and enforce mature aspects of workplace relations like cooperating with your team mates to achieve a common goal. Instead, their idea of preparing you for real life is to spend your golden years in a viscious class full of nasty people and staff, from mon-sat, 8am-5pm, dressed up like a professor even though it's boiling humid hot.
Once you graduate, if you don't have malaysian citizenship, are not married to a malaysian, or have malaysian parents, you will not be given a guaranteed housemanship (Internship). If it is hard to go back to your home country, the college doesn't give a dam. They are happy to just take your money and dump you at the end - leaving you in debt, jobless, and with a useless certificate which means nothing without work experience and won't help you in any other field.
Do not make this mistake. This is the strongest warning I can give you.
7. Keep hush on matters - if you have a problem about the college, you are not allowed to raise the matter to them or outside the college. If they find out, instead of trying to address the issue, they will try and punish you for complaining. To avoid even getting into this situation, they will threaten you at the start. E. G. We had some representatives from the ministry of health come to campus. We were told to not raise any complaints, or we will not pass our exams or get through college.
8. Unethical - students can mug up answers to past paper questions, as they tend to repeat them. Their marks are not reflective of true education, but rather, cheating. Lecturers will even disclose some of the questions to some of their student friends.
9. No respect for privacy - your marks will be publicly posted, not just on the college walls, but also on the internet. Even if you failed. If you ask them to take them down, they'll dismiss you and say that it is within their policy.
They will give your personal contact details to any member of the public, shamelessly. If requested to not do so, or to explain why they did, they will just ignore you.
10. If you're an international student, they will ask you for your feedback and whether you will recommend the program to others, while you are sitting your final mbbs exams. Do you expect international students to make any negative remarks while the outcome of the final mbbs exam results are out of their hands? Don't be fooled! The majority of the international students with positive testimonials on their website are actually of malaysian/singaporean ancestry. The real foreigners largely drop out in first or second year, which is what I should have done in hindsight. Now, I realise that I will be stuck with this university label on my resume for life. What a disgrace.
And the college actually has the balls to ask me to recommend them to others..

In short, this college is a fraud. They are not international, and are worse than school in my opinion. Do not waste your money on melaka manipal medical college, as they are happy to take your money and not deliver your expectations. Not even a guaranteed job, or an effort to help you out. They will be smiling when you finally accept that you wasted 5 years of your youth leading a miserable life, and ending up in significant debt. If you do manage to get out of the situation, they will get others to call you so that you can help them out. They want you to do all the hard work, then expect you to support their students (Who most likely don't give a crap about you and would have treated you badly if they were the same level as you). It's the selfiest, greediest, most unethical, immature and corrupted institution I have ever been to.

It's pretty suspicious that we'd see two reviews so close to each other in 2017, posing as international students, right after a negative review in May 2017. These two reviews are likely to be from the college administration or shareholders itself, in a defensive response to the negative reviews on here.

Let me say that very few foreigners of non-Malaysian origin actually continued through the entire course from 1st to 5th year. In all fairness, a few have enjoyed their time - I can only think of 3. The majority have actually dropped out or changed program, and the few that survived had a painful time. One actually lost his life, along with another in a car crash. It is true that most of the few foreigners are actually of Malaysian origin and have family and friends in Malaysia - they may have lived overseas to do a few years of high school.

I can say that a lot of the points raised in the original post are quite true. The college has a poor complaint handling process - in fact, raising a complaint could mean you are compromising your chances of getting through.
Some of the lecturers were good, and the doctors from the hospital were good too. Some doctors from India were horrible, with a highly narcissistic personality and would humiliate and bully students in front of the class. Nothing could be done. If you complain, they will make it out that you are the problem.

In terms of the Malaysian culture, come on guys, we all know that bullying is a huge problem in Malaysia. It's not just foreigners that get isolated and treated nastily, but they are more prone, given they are vulnerable and have no supports. A good 5 students in each grade will have absolutely no friends, not because they are bad people, but because of some nasty bullies in their year who would ill-treat anyone that associates with these victims.

The problem is, people respond aggressively whenever any genuine negative feedback is raised. It's called victim blaming. It doesn't solve the matter, but it's designed to shut people up in order to hide others' wrong doings and protect their reputation. The truth will not change!

There were a few good things about the college too. The hospital at Melaka provides a really good learning experience and in all fairness, had very good doctors who would practise morally, ethically, and with good clinical standards. Sometimes, exposure to the real world is what is needed to put the immature rich kids in place.

Overall, I wouldn't call it an international university by any standards, nor would I say that Malaysian culture is welcoming towards foreigners. It's a good option for Malaysians though, as it's cheaper than other universities, and most graduates are well looked after in terms of getting a job after passing final year. The course is English, but fluency in Malay is required (and at a high level with medical symptomatology) - hence why it is suitable for Malaysian students.

I am a foreign alumnus from the US. Half these complaints are invalid. I have never experienced difficulties using my degree (ECFMG certified). I got support from plenty of staffers but I also made the effort to get to know people, had plenty of friends across all classes and races ( I am not even that aware of the economic state of that many people).
Racism, yeah but that is a political thing, not a University thing. In fact, I had open conversations over many Kopi O discussing racism in the US vs in the UK vs India vs. Malaysia. The people I know from MMMC were open minded and globally-thinking. I was not one for the gossipy types, so I just stayed away from those people. That is in any place in this world!
Posting grades is also common but at least when I was there, it was by roll number so no one really knew. We didn't have assigned seating and with clinical groups, we got along with who we did. If you went through 5 years without finding your place...well, don't know what to tell you...Medicine is a team effort, residency is in groups so is your entire career. Maybe try Radiology? or Pathology?
Good luck learning that the world is what you make of it.

There was only one American who actually enjoyed their time to my knowledge - he stayed back to live in Malaysia after he completed his degree, so that he can study for his USMLEs in Malaysia. Two were desperate to leave MMMC for the Antigua program due to the reasons mentioned by the original thread poster. One painfully got through the course, vowing to never return to Malaysia.
There were very few true non-Malaysian foreigners who completed all 5 years - many left the course early on. Those foreigners all faced hurdles after graduation. Blaming them for not being able to get along when their fellow students were excluding them? Guess what - They have done well back in their home countries, meaning they can get along with people just fine, but just not with a hostile bunch of rich kid bullies who aren't quite adults in university. They drive expensive cars and dine out in expensive places, courtesy of their parents. And bully the weak!

Well this person just failed to assimilate and adapt to the changing cultures environment and people.
I have graduated many years ago and now practice in the US. MMMC melaka campus is an offshoot of manipal university thus it does not have all the advantages of a huge Univ campus and environment, but the first 2.5 years in Manipal does have.
But yes, as international student you are going to have a problem doing internship in malaysia. You have to arrange an internship back in your own country or manipal India. Your main purpose to study in MMMC should not be too be to practice elsewhere and not malaysia, that will never happen. The country is closing its doors to foreign doctors - including specialists.
Its a good college for Malaysians, for international it depends - Americans shud rather choose Antigua university in the Caribbean which is run by manipal university. MMMC is probably for international from some middle east nations, Sri Lanka, African nations that recognizes it's degree.

As a fresh graduate of this [censor] college all i can say is stay away, this place is a scam and a degree mill, the only thing they care about is money hence its name. Its most popularly known as money making medical college. As for the lecturers they are REALLY GOOD the only thing good about the place but they have as much say as the cleaner because like them they are contract workers and have no say in the running of the college. The real theives are the management which is RAZAK AND PROF JASPAL and the other faceless creatures of the night. they coudnt give a damn if anything happens to you as long as no body finds out. As for the above comment about prof Mra i disagree completely the poster is probably some cry baby who cant take a scolding, trust me she is one of the few lecturers that actually care about what kind of doctor you become and not to mention shes the best clinician in the whole college, the posters probably someone angry about the rohingya issue in Myanmar and taking it out on her. In the end you dont have to trust my word go to facebook and check for MMMC graduatess and ask for their feed back i guarantee their views will be the same as mine.

Good day, i think this complaint is rather personal and based on emotions. The truth is racism and discrimination is going to occur wherever u are going to go. I think being in manipal would have taught u on how to see the world. I know its hard..it aint easy..the pain, i understand. Sometime we just have to tolerate..for our own inner peace

You're just being a crybaby and imo is not even qualified to be a medical student. I have no issues making friends with other people be it from Sri Lanka or Malaysia, maybe it's your problem that you feel we are racist? You complained about having to blend in to Malaysian culture when you're enrolling yourself in a medical school which is partly in Malaysia? Seriously? Are you mentally challenged or just plain ignorant? I have been in this college for 3 years and I would say the lecturers here are much passionate in teaching and friendlier than every single one I've met back home, and they are always there to help in times of need. We have raised lots of issues and dissatisfaction towards the college and mind you, the college administration has always been listening to our feedbacks and changed the way they handle certain issues to accommodate us. Our alumni has been competent enough to further their studies in all over the world including US, UK, and Australia, and even secured jobs over there, so what's your problem regarding your job? Didn't you check which medical college your country recognises before enrolling yourself into one? Too stupid or lazy to do so? Besides, what do you expect the college to do if your country doesn't recognise your degree because you enrolled yourself into a college which it doesn't recognise? Hire you to sell puff? Changing seats are allowed as long as you get the permission to do so, besides, does it really matter if you're not sitting with your friends in lecture? Oh wait, I forgot that you have issues blending in with other people from different culture, I'm sorry for the fact that your parents didn't raise you up properly to understand that the world doesn't revolve around you. Please make yourself sterile so the world is a better place without you contributing to the gene pool.
Yours sincerely
-3rd year student MMMC-

You don't have the intelligence or compassion required to even be a medical student. Oh wait, your parents bought you a degree.
To respond to your pathetic [censored]:
1. Foreigners do not know Malaysian culture before enrolling. If you're going to invite foreign students, it's your duty to make them feel welcome - not bully them and then call them a crybaby, stupid, lazy or to sterilize themselves. They proved they are tough to put up with nasty idiots like you that make up their classrooms, and still pass a tough course. It's such a shame that [censored]s like you can pay their way to become doctors without having the right qualities.
2. They aren't eligible to work in Malaysia if they aren't Malaysians - learn to read, idiot. If the eligibility rules change overseas, and Malaysia doesn't let them work, they are stuffed. If the university doesn't bother to help them out, it shouldn't be opening the course to non-Malaysians. That is deceptive conduct. Not to mention a waste of a young person's valuable years and their parents' hard work and money.
3. Are you aware that there are a number of Malaysian doctors in the countries you've mentioned who have come into deep [censored] with authorities because they failed to grow up and continued to be hostile while lacking the qualities needed to be a doctor? And failed to integrate into their societies. You sound like a hypocrite.

One of the student and found racism by Mra Aye, Clinical Professor/Internist, Department of Medicine, Melaka Manipal Medical College Jalan Hampur, Bukit Baru 75150, Malaysia. Email: mraaye@hotmail.com She even scold the students in very bad manner and fails purposely the ones fights for their rights. Its known very well among the students and even to other lectures. She is actually violating the fundamental rights of certain students whom she don't like and a shame for the college. She is one who must get some psychiatric treatment. She is from Myanmar and with full of racist attitute. If she doesn't change her attitude or the college don't take any action soon enough, I'll make sure this will be reported to the medical council but internationally and to all other universities.

Hi. I'm sorry to hear that from you however no 1, 3, 4 are frw of the above things that you SHOULD already know before even enrolling. It is your mistake not to enquire or ask before enrolling blindly. Anyhow, like me, I have already almost 50% of the things you complaint here when I have not even become a student there yet. Learn to accept things and see them from different perspectives instead of blaming others on this and that.
Chillax already since you have graduated :)

Firstly, if it's marketed as an international university, it's easy for foreigners to believe that there are lots of international students, and that they have good prospects of working once they graduate. It is wrong to advertise it knowing that their future is bleak.
Your advice is pretty stupid if you expect a foreigner, before setting foot into Malaysia or knowing any Malaysians, to know:
1. Malaysian culture
3. Unwritten rules like having to be clean shaven.
4. Attendance rate requirement for exams.
3 and 4 are the university's responsibility to inform when they advertise.

Hey, if I may know does the first 2 and half years of study in MBBS really being conducted in India? I'm about to apply here but I rethink about it cause I've read a lot of negative feedback for the MMMC's administration and etc.
