I bought my Newfie from Deb Wigal, a veterinarian and breeder, three years ago. She told me over the phone that the only puppy she had left from her latest litter had a heart murmur. I researched murmurs in dogs and found out that he was likely to grow out of it. I took the chance and bought him. She expressed no other health concerns for him at any time. His first check up was a week after his purchase. He had no sign of a heart murmur (I often wonder if he even had one in the first place). Unfortunately, he did have malformed inner-lower eye lids that had been improperly corrected. She never disclosed to me that she attempted to correct his malformed inner eye lids. He gets regular infections in both eyes from this malformation and will likely need surgery to correct them one day. I would have gotten them done immediately, except for his other health issues have taken top priority and I can only afford so many surgeries at a time. He will be having his second knee surgery next month. He has torn ligaments in both knees and is starting to show hip problems as well. He also has arthritis as a result of his first surgery. I understand that large breed dogs are more likely to have joint, hip, and tendon issues. It is a risk you take when you buy a large breed dog. However, this may be more common with some breeders than others. Since I was already lied to by this breeder, I would like others to know about my concerns, in case they are thinking about purchasing from this breeder. Since there are no other reviews on Top Shelf I figured I would give mine. I love my dog immensely and will pay whatever I have to to take care of him. However, I often wonder how many other Top Shelf dogs have had health problems so early in their lives. It disappoints me that a veterinarian would put money over integrity.
