I live at a Salvation Army homeless shelter in Tupleo, MS. I arrived there back in September of 2009. This is my seecond time in this shelter as I came there in September of 2008. The first time I came there the people treated me like a piece of garbage. I got so tired of it I left. I was forced to come back last year because I had no place to go. But let me back track abit and say that I was forced to come the 1st time under false pretenses. I was told that there would be an oportunity for me to get a job. In other words it was suppose to be a work program. But this work program turned out to be fake. I had to fill out a paper with 10 lines on it each day Monday-Friday in order to stay. Even if you had 20 or more sheets filled out in one day, you still had to get 10 more the next day. I could tell you horror stories about this place. Shut it down for good! Pleasse

I haft to agree that the salvation army in tupelo ms is the most uncaring place i have ever been forced due to outside reasons. I have a personal terminal illness and when i did my intake question air i told Susan at the front desk all my medical and mental issues. she went and told the dorm manager about my medical status, and he told everyone else that was staying there exactly what my medical status was and diagnosis. And within 24 hours the whole homeless community and the people of tupelo ms knew all my ailments and i was treated like my illness would jump off me and on to them just for being around them. I have never been treated so badly in my life, so if you ever go there dont disclose you're medical info to Susan or anyone else for that matter because it will be disclosed to everyone within the community and Tupelo ms David King

I agree with the person who filed the complaint about the homeless being exploited and abused. Salvation Army like many other shelters are ran by people who's motives are not clear but sometimes excessive. One of my friends stayed in one in Akron Ohio and said he was told by an employee that the shelter was a business first and a Christian organization second much like the Haven of Rest Ministries where they claim their funding comes strictly from donations and not from federally funded programs I posed the question what is it that you do here.I give them my money and can't have any access to it unless I am leaving for good which means I am totally dependent on their system of doing things.I had a job oppurtunity and because I couldn't get my money or a bus pass I couldn't get to the appointment.

I am a resident of the Tupelo salvation Army shelter and I must clear my conscience about the Awful treatment of the residents at this facility. Susan Gilbert is the supposed social services director, that really does nothing to help us out. She is cold and unfeeling towards all. The food we are served is below what even a dog would eat.I have witnessed fresh foods being delivered and placed into a freezer that was told to me contained Major Dorman's stuff and we are not to touch. The only time we get good food is when other organizations come to feed us.or when the higher up people come to town. I have witnessed Ms. Gilbert write totally false things in peoples files and asked not to tell anyone but I cannot in all good conscience do that. I am being told now that i must move into apartments that are substandered because they are owned by the father of a friend of Ms. Gilbert's. There is at present a young mother with a 4 yr old autistic son that has been forces to put him on experimental drugs and now he walks around like a little zombie. She was told if she did not give him the drugs, she would be kicked out on the streets. Someone needs to come into the shelter undercover and see how things really are for the residents. They put on the show when they know you are coming and if anyone says anything they get kicked out. They have also placed ex con that are known drug users in postions over other more able to hold that job. There are two people that seem to really show true Christian ways and they are Reverend David Gettis and Mr. William Archie. They have help more people and builet more self esstem in us they either Major Dorman or Ms. Gilbert. I feel the staff needs to be check and replaced. Please help us all! God bless.

i am living at the salvation army in tupelo, ms. I have a young child with me and the treatment there is horrible. i have been there since Nov. 2012 i have no place else to go. At this shelter we residents are treated like garbage. i was forced to apply for disability because childcare has been cut from the salvation army and i have to bring my child with me everywhere to get ten job searches a day on foot, it was too much for him. we have food that for the most part should be thrown away because it has spoiled and we are fed it anyway. the staff with the exception of a few do not care what happens to us. i have had to leave in the rain with my child many times and yes he has gotten sick every time. now we have some new staff members who are known drug users and ARE ALLOWED TO WORK AROUND OUR MEDICATIONS. the major is the one who keeps putting her friends in charge instead of giving someone more qualified for the job a chance. we are mistreated bad. this place needs to be checked out and restaffed asap. i wouldn't recommend anyone to come here for shelter until we have new staff that will run it like it should

i live in tupelo mississippi and i was staying at the salvation army and i got put out because of job searches. I told Susan Gilbert that i went to the sites and they said their applications were on-line and i had to put them there. I notified her of theis and she told me i was lying and me and my two children were told to leave. Since then i have noticed a lot of things that are not right with this facility. First off, they think they are better than the people they serve. Well i am here to tell you this, there is no one better than the next only person that is better died on the cross for all of our sins and unless you are him you are not better, they have to realize that God gave them that job and God giveth and God taketh away. Everyone is only one paycheck away from being in the same situation as those they are here to help.

How can a homeless shelter tell their client to work on self the turn around and say. If you don't stay and do work around the shelter .The person would be ask to leave. And then when start working they would give a bill for someone staying there. This is wrong isn't, the claim to be a nonprofit

As a person that has been homeless for better then 20 years, I have been through a lot of homeless shelters in my time. I have not seen one yet that I can complain about until I went to the Central Arizona Shelter Service's here in Phoenix, AZ. These people will still your things, will treat a homeless person like they are the lowest form of life on the planet. They get disrespectful with you and you respond, you get 86st and if you file a grievance against a staff member they 86st you. They will kick someone out on the street just because they are epileptic. They have 86st people off the property just for doing outreach with with the homeless. You can right a good book on the things I have seen them do to homeless people in that shelter. Sign; Runningdeer/CMF Phoenix, AZ.

it is crazy! those orgs are crappy corrupted [censored]holes and shouldnt be sponsored at all! They have no right to mistreat homeless people like that! Thats why i never donate them becuase I heard enough shtories about their corruption. Also, whenever I see homlesss families I start thinking what the hell all these churches with their huge facilities are doing at this moment? Why cant thosu churches help those homeless people? They are also corrupted!
