The Pep Boys Damage to my engine financial loss occurred poor service

On 11/25/2020 I had my 2015 Jeep Cherokee in for an oil change, and a tire rotation at the Pep Boys located at 3207 Kirkwood Highway Wilmington De 19808 - when my wife returned to get her car that same day the engine light was still on saying low oil pressure, and the guy who reset the gauge seemed annoyed that she questioned if the oil was indeed changed. He said yes it was changed. He lied!
All that was done was a tire rotation. And that is questionable.
Less than six weeks later we started to have issues with that same 2015 Jeep Cherokee where it was stalling out first thing in the morning.
This happened 2- 3 times in two days.
We took it to Pep Boys on or about Jan 7th to find out what was wrong, and they said it was fine, and they could not find out what was wrong.
They lied! again.
All they did was drive it when it was warm, and the problem did not occur, but they never did a deep check on the car. We told them it happened in cold weather, but they overlooked that.
Their excuse was the tech was off that day and they did the bare basic check and could not figure it out. So they said it was safe to drive!
The car continued to act up the next day and, we finally took it to reputable mechanic.
Buckley's Auto Care located at 1604 E Newport Pike Newport De 19804 on Jan 11th, 2021 who did a full diagnostic on it and actually did a road test first thing in the morning with a cold start as we requested.
The car stalled out as described to Pep Boys who denied anything was wrong. Buckley's did their job! and found the problem.
Come to find out the reason the car was stalling out was there was barely a quart of oil in the engine.
This is less than 6 weeks since they supposedly changed the oil at Pep Boys.
When our mechanic checked the oil in the engine with the dip stick no oil was present on the stick. Not a drop! and they have the pictures to prove it.
What oil was in the engine was so thick and old it congealed to the point it caused damage to the spark plugs and gummed up the engine.
The cost to have this fixed was $695.89 to which I find Pep Boys totally responsible for.
If not for Pep Boys negligence in not completing our oil change as paid for it appears the tech plain forgot to add oil and tried to cover it up.
We would not have to incur this charge to fix our car NOT to mention the DANGER that could of resulted if the engine seized up while driving, and causing potential injury to one of us in the event an accident occurred due to the stalling out and not being able to control the car.
Before this date I was a loyal Pep Boys customer for the last 5 + years - religiously getting our oil changed ON SCHEDULE - getting new tires three times - multiple flat tires fixed, and other minor services.
Always trusted Pep Boys. Never Again.
But this total disregard of service is not what we expect from Pep Boys, and we want to be reimbursed for our loss.
I have the paperwork from Pep Boys on the date mentioned for the alleged oil change on 11/25/2020 where it states the oil was changed, and I have the paperwork from Buckley's Auto Care for the repair work if you need proof.
I fully expect Pep Boys to honor this complaint and do the right thing.

Thank you for your understanding and quick response to this matter.

Desired outcome: Fully compensated for the loss of $695.89 in a check not store credit.

The Pep Boys Refusing service, horrible service roswell georgia

Negative five stars!
Horrible customer service!
I went there on rainy Saturday evening, I just recently bought a used work van only to find out during a heavy rains that the wiper blades were very bad. So I googled the nearest auto parts store near me and that's where it took me (6521 Roswell rd)
I soon as I arrived I seen an employee in the parking lot about to get in what appeared to be a customer car so I rolled my window down and ask him if they sold wiper blades there? He looked at me and said "your joking right" and just got inside the customer car left. The only pep boys I ever shopped at is the one near my home in Kennesaw that's where I bought my tires for my daughters car and that store only does service they don't sell any other automotive parts so that's why I asked the employee in the parking lot if they sold wiper blades.
I went inside and at the checkout counter there was one employee working with a customer As I walked to the aisle where the wiper blades were, I was looking for a book so I could look up my vehicles wiper blade fitment. there was no book so, I started to browse the store to give the employee time to deal with the customer in front of him, after browsing for 10 to 15 minutes I notice that there were two employees sitting at the service counter with no customers in front of them, so I headed over to service counter hoping to get either one of the two to look up my vehicle information so could go and pick out the right size blades, when I started to walk over there the female happened to get up and walk into the service area and following behind her was the older man which I believe was the store manager. As he was walking in front of the counter he looked right at me and without any kind of expression he just continued without even saying a "hello" or "hang on we will be right back" (No customer training on this guy for sure) so I hung around the counter for a few minutes and realized that they might be gone for a while so I then went back to browsing through the isles for like 5 minutes or so and then I saw that they were back at there counter. So walked back over there and I noticed the female was sitting there typing on her personal cell phone it had a glitter case on it. "I said excuse me ma'am" I had to repeat myself at least twice before she lifted her head up from her phone to even acknowledge me in front of her counter space and I asked her "could I please get you to look up my wiper blades for my vehicle" And soon as said that the older man next to her told me "you can go over to that counter and he can help you" I informed him that he has been very busy with that customer for long time and that I have being waiting for quite a while. And just want someone to look up my vehicle information And I see that she is on her cellphone and I would like to have someone look up my wiper blades. She (Melissa) with a very angry tone told me that "I'm not on my cell phone I'm working on a quote for a customer using my cellphone and that she is now NOT going to help me!" the older man next to her which I'm sure is her manager did not offer to help me either he actually looked at me like if I had s*t on my face. so I turned around and seen that the other employee was still busy with that one original customer so at that point I didn't see why I would spend any of my hard earned money there.
I ended driving a block down the street had to pull over and park as the rain was heavy and I couldn't safely travel. after waiting for about 30 to 40 for the rain to slow I able to find an advance auto parts a few miles up the road. Right away they acknowledge me by saying "Hello how can we help you today" they looked up my blades and installed them as well for free even though it was lightly raining at the time.
Never ever will I go to another pep boys and I will always inform others not to as well..

The Pep Boys Pep boys rebates

I have been a Pep Boys consumer for many years. However, in February and March of 2020, I purchased oil products with an advertisement for a $15 rebate per purchase. I have been waiting for my rebates since submission on both of those months, but have yet to receive my rebates. I have called, chatted, and e-mailed pep-boys and the blackhawk rebates with no resolution as of yet. Why does it take 9 months to process my rebates? This is totally unsat and I will never do business with pep boys again! Still waiting for my $30 worth of rebates!

The Pep Boys Customer service

On 11-13-2020, I purchased an alternator and 4 spark plugs for my car at the pepboys in Stream Walk Lane, Manassas VA. I paid for the items with a core fee of $80.00 instead of $50.00 from the pepboys website. I returned the used alternator on 12-4-2020 to get credit of $80.00. The parts department person behind the counter credited me $69.23 on my debit card. He also charged me $69.23 on my debit card, making it even. I lost my money due to his foolishness and both times he has no mask on talking to customer. My bank account did not reflect my refund. The reason for only $69.23 was I purchased brake pads and he don't know how to credit me the core refund. I am asking for my core refund of $69.23 please, thank you.

The Pep Boys Shop fee of $35. And what is an outside purchase on a starter

Why put a starter in a wilson reman starter if pepboys don't stock them. Now I see the reason for outside purchase$264.64. Also car was at shop at 8;30 am didn't get inside till 1 & ten mins later there calling telling me it needs2 tie rod ends, qs tie rod, wheel alignment. Anyway it took 2 hours to do starter and then car was put outside 3;30. No one called to say its done I called at 5 and was then told its done. Thats funny cause on 10/29 the car had a complete going over at my main garage, they didn't say anything about tie rods, and ive been dealing with them for 14 years. Also how I know when car was in &out there is a camera that records 360 degrees with time stamp. I seen the guy pull it into bay and back out when done and sat with no call for 2 hours. Something so simple as a starter rem.&repl to take 8 hours is ridiculus. They should stop trying to up sell. I would never send anyone to pepboys not even my enemy

The Pep Boys Oil change

Took my vehicle in for a simple oil change. Man called me to tell me one of my Run Flat tires was "damaged beyond repair" to which I said "they are run flats I ll take them to my tire guy and have them use our warranty" turned out to be a lie.
Now my vehicle leaks oil. Taking it to the dealership to find out what went wrong but this is a 2015 Infiniti that had no previous issues and very well maintained.
When I called to let them know that is was happening the same man who told me my tire was so damaged said I hadn't been there since May. I let him know I have my receipt.
I will never take another vehicle to this place again.

The Pep Boys Services not performed after they stated to have performed services

On 9/21/20 I took my car in for an oil change, tire rotation and inspection. I was called by joseph c. And he stated that I would need a computerized alignment, stabilizer link and sway bars. They stated that the problems were discovered during the tire rotation. Well they never rotated the tires! The tires are marked and were never removed or rotated. How does a mechanic (tristan f.) find these issues without removing the tires. I picked up my car, took it to another mechanic (mercedes of greenville) and they stated that my sway bars were in great shape, no repair needed. Now I wonder if my oil was changed because it looks the same. Something needs to be done about this. I will never take my car to pep boys again. I demand a refund. Thanks

The Pep Boys Brake pads $50 off coupon never applied to the total!

I first called store #1496 4400 South Semoran Blvd Orlando, FL 32822 and spoke to the manager Louis Virzi. I asked him about the brake pads advertising they have on their site which is $99.99 for brake pads standard price and $50 off for the package which is rear and front totally to $150 for both including labor. The manager kept insisting for me to come one in so they can do a free Check on brakes no obligation. I said ok May 12, 2020 I went in and spoke to Johnathon B. Because Louis was busy and getting ready to go home around 5:30 pm or so... Johnathon aka John said yes you need brake pads in the front. I asked only in the front? Why do I hear a metal sound on the rear then said oh yes the rear also then showed me the amount both rear and front brake pads would come out to $150. including all service and labor. that's with the $50 off. no tax yet. He said they have to order the pads because they don't have them so to come on in the next day May 13, 2020 I said ok great. I went in they replaced the brake pads and charged me $228.98 I asked where is the $50 off. John said it's already a discount. I kept looking at my receipt to see where they applied the $50 off because $228.98 shouldn't be the total with the coupon. John left for the day so I spoke to Louis and showed him my receipt and the advertising ad they had online which expires May 31, 2020. He lied over the phone he lied in my face showing me his computer on brakes price that isn't The standard Price for my vehicle. I continued to ask him to show me where is the discount on my receipt and I showed him what they are advertising Online and over the phone doesn't match what they charged me. I said oh so you're telling me this is false advertising since you're stating you don't know about the advertising ad to your store. He stuttered not knowing what to say and walked away. I said I'm leaving but this will not stay like this! I'm reporting you to the better business bureau And filing a claim. I'm also calling Pep Boys Corporation Headquarters and filing a complaint! So I did exactly what I said I will do! I‘M also filing a dispute with my bank. THEY ARE SCAMMERS! FIRST & LAST TIME I WOULD EVER ALLOW THEM TO SERVICE MY VEHICLE. READ RECEIPTS THERES ALSO A MISC FEE OF $15 which doesn't make any sense.

The Pep Boys over pricing for parts and labor

I went to service my car at the Hazlet, Nj Pep Boys store # 55 and was excessively overcharged for services rendered. I am very skeptical that all the services that were supposed to be done were actually performed. I went in for an engine light and I know what the exact problem was, Camshaft position sensor needed to be replaced. I called the parts dept on Friday 1/30 day before service date to ensure they had the part which they ordered for me for Sat 2/1/2020 service. The Service manager Kenneth did not really care that I knew what the problem was, he indicated he has to do his own diagnostic. A 23.00 part that needed replacement turned into a 953.58 charge. The Sensor was only 23.00 as per pep boys parts dept. They called me back after they completed the diagnostic (Robert) and started telling me that the Camshaft position sensor had to be replace like I noted initially but that I also had to do a Tune up, some pro fuel cleaning and change the valve gasket cover and indicated that these well necessary if I was changing the sensor. He did not go thru any details in terms of what each thing would cost just told me it would cost around 900+Tax. I took their word that all this was necessary and that they would not be trying to overcharge me because I am a woman, I've been to this service dept several times for regular oil changes, I thought they were honest. So I authorized the services thinking they would do the right thing. When they called me back in an hour, telling me that 4 hours' worth of work was fully completed, it make me suspicious about what was actually done. I question the person that call me Joe and also questions, Joe, Kenneth, Robert and John the technician when I came in to pick up my car. I did not understand how this BIG job as they said was all done in 1 hour yet they charged me 498.99 for labor and when I looked at my Invoice in detail I realized that I was also overcharged for parts. I called the parts dept and got the actual price of all the parts and the service dept charged me 183.73 more than they should have charged me. They charged me for some labor Warranty that I did not authorize or request was never asked either. They charged me for some Shop Fee that I have no idea what that is for and charge me for close to 500.00 labor for a job that was fully completed within less than an hour and half. So technically after doing all the math, PEP boys overcharged me by close to $ 575.77 and when I called the service manager he had some policy system excuse that this is how they price jobs and that parts are charged different in service dept then when you buy them directly from the parts dept. That they were warranty and that warranty that I did not ask for or was it even an option to the customer cost more than 700% of the actual cost of the part. I want this to go on record and will be pursuing action against PEP Boys for not effectively communicating to their customers how they come up with service prices allowing the customer to pull back. They told me I needed a tune up and all they did was change the spark plugs when a full tune involves more than just the spark plugs and also it does not take an hour to change these plugs, it also does not take a hour to change a sensor and then another hour to change a gasket cover. If the mechanic did all this work in 1 hour, why would peps think that they can justify charging a customer 499.00 dollars in labor?/ I don't care if he is an experience mechanic or not, how can Pep boys justify charging a customer close to 500.00 for 1 hour of actual work? How can you charge a customer 140.58 for a sensor that pep boys sells for 23.00? How can you charge 53.98 for a gasket cover that pep boys charges 23.99 for? How can you charge 19.99 for each Spark Plug that pep boys sells for 10.12? How can you charge the customer for a labor Warranty that they did not authorize or was told about? This service department was a bunch a crooks that took advantage of me and my trust and I want my money for all the overcharges returned and I will do whatever it takes to expose this Pep Boys because this should not be allowed to happen to anyone.

The Pep Boys overcharged

Start to finish just an awful experience was the point of making an appointment at 1 o'clock if your car is going to sit there until 530. Lack of communication, Wouldn't have my car aligned and tires put on and now my car pulls hard to the right. So now they want me to drive back another hour and 20 minutes just so they can drive it around the corner.

Okay that last complaint was a mess, and I can’t edit it so...
I purchased tires on 1/21/2020 and made an appointment for Saturday 1/25/2020 to have them installed, I had to reschedule for Sunday 1/26/2020 because it was so busy I would’ve been there for 6 hours.
The website said 117.00 for installation blah, blah, blah, they are supposed to check your breaks, alignment and all that good stuff for free when you’re a member.
I showed up Sunday 1/26/2020 for my appointment, I had the tires in the back of my car that I had purchased on 21 January 2020 with receipt, was charge $75.96 for a carry in tire installation? Whatever that means ?
I let the tech know that the brakes felt a little spongy, They are supposed to check the brakes, alignment and all that jazz during whatever for free inspection they give. I said if the car needed an alignment and the brake line to be bled to do so. I was not notified whether I needed an alignment or not they just did it. But my paperwork says that I declined the alignment, I don’t understand this either. I waited for five hours to get my car, and now it pulls hard to the right, it didn’t do that before. I called corporate no help, spoke with the area manager Scott for the Frederick district, He was very condescending and said that I had buyers remorse. He told me that if I drove to Baltimore he would drive my car and see if the alignment pulled to the right and give me my refund. I live in Pennsylvania two hours from the city. I don’t mind paying for work to be done on my car as long as honest and good work. I don’t know what was going on Sunday in that store with a particular customer but the general manager Nicholas Coleman was having an altercation with a gentleman regarding a part that was put into the car. The altercation was rather heated it made me very uncomfortable so I left the store, I had to call an Uber.

The Pep Boys repair/service

Pep Boys
65 Court St
Hackensack, NJ
Absolutely HORRIBLE service.
Went there on a Thursday morning for some warranty service (valves tapping) and they said I will hear from them this afternoon. Didnt get a call or anything. I went by on That Friday afternoon and vehicle is sitting in the SAME spot. I asked what happened & the reply I got was "Tech had a problem with a prior repair and needed to resolve it"
That should have been a clue for me to grab my vehicle and just leave. But I left it there and explained:

1) That's not MY problem
2) someone should have contacted me to let me know 1 & 1/2 days would be wasted.

Nonetheless, Started with repairing the valves and ended up ordering valve springs and camshaft. (All under warranty).
Once parts come in, they look further and notice bits of metal in the oil. Ends up I need a new engine.
Contacted the warranty company and received authorization to replace the engine. But then the shop tried to get me (the customer) to pay for the valve springs & camshaft...SERIOUSLY?!?!?
You guys were the ones who misdiagnosed the issue and not The customer has to pay for your blunder...? Not gonna happen
Then they tried to call the warranty company for reimbursement and they said "NOPE" Return the parts or ur stuck with them.

Anyway, the engine was replaced. From there everything went to hell. They fix one thing, drive off and something else goes wrong. Engine is fine, but now electrical issues. That was resolved but now clunking noise and fluid leaking. They say they will call you back and never do. You have to call them for updates on YOUR vehicle. At one time their "Master Tech" overfilled the transmission pan causing fluid to leak out and burn off on the exhaust. Huge plumes of smoke on the highway because of THEIR mistake. Then I pay to have 1 hose replaced and they replace the wrong one! Then try to tell me I have to pay to have the correct one replaced. The repairs are horrible and the customer service is even worse!

The Pep Boys tires

Misleading tire sales
I had made an online purchase for 4 tires at the store in front of clerk. Order #[protected] on 12/03/2019
I received my online receipt for a grand total of $414.11 including taxes I did ask about a veterans discount of 10% which I was told when I made payment I would receive it.
I asked if I could do it two days later in which the clerk said was no problem, so I show on my appointment time 12/05/2019 at 1 pm when I'm told there where no tires. We ran in circles for a good hour where I had to go to a higher price tire and I had to comeback on 12/09/2019 at 9 am
So I completed the transaction to find out it cost me $464.61 and no Veteran discount.
I think it's really unfair how I was treated not only the run around and then price going up and my Veterans discount... I strongly suggest that this company needs to change their lying tactic.

The Pep Boys diagnostic and repair estimate

On 11/9/2019, I stopped into the Waterbury, CT location to have a "check engine light" diagnosed due to a faulty oxygen sensor. At a cost of $105.87 to diagnose which sensor needed replacing (which is ridiculous), I took it up on myself to do some homework after the diagnosis revealed that I needed the upstream sensor on my 2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx LS and a coolant sensor. The estimate was $566.00 (not including the $105.87 already paid).

I went to a competitor and purchased the upstream sensor. I watched a video on how to replace the sensor which is was VERY easy to do seeing as I am someone who is not a mechanic, but mechanically inclined. The sensor was $46 and it took me about 20 minutes to replace it. The system was "reset" and I no longer have a "check engine" light on. There was no issue with the coolant sensor because the "check engine" light would have come on again or stayed on. You can't diagnose a sensor that has not yet gone bad or malfunctioned and it has not been determined how you produced the diagnosis when in fact, it was fine.

I have no idea how you even conceived the estimate that you did, but I assure you of this - I am going to consult with legal counsel to determine if extortion, price gouging and just literally taking advantage of a customer could be enough for allegations and pursue this matter.

I am DISGUSTED by your business practices/conduct and will NOT tolerate this! You wanted to charge me almost $700 for diagnosis of a faulty sensor and for the replacement of the front (upstream) sensor and the coolant sensor (which nothing is wrong with it). I got this repaired for $46 and 20 minutes of my time watching a quick video.

You certainly do have some never taking advantage of people which is more than obvious with my case and there is no excuse you can produce to validate your actions.

"Check Engine" light is still off at the time of this email - 3 hours after repair….

-Bruce Lavigne

===================================

Any probability of extortion, price gouging or deceiving the public [customer] warrants action. It is unknown how many other victims fell to the illegal actions of Pepboys who did not possess the knowledge of a legit estimate or failed to get a second opinion.

In my case, to cost me out [estimate] almost $700 for 2 sensor replacement (of which one didn't need/require it) is considered extortion, price gouging and/or fraud. As stated, I am not a mechanic, but did purchase the sensor I needed for $46 and replaced it within 20 minutes. How does this reflect the estimate provided by Pepboys? - it doesn't.

It's illegal and unlawful what they did and they should be held liable.

The Pep Boys brakes

I had an appointment for an oil change and asked for an noise to be located in the front end suspension. Gave suggestion as to what I believed to be the cause(correct by the way)and left the vehicle. Called a couple hours later to find out what was going on and they told me oil change was complete and found the cause of the noise. Upper control arm bolts were loose and needed an alignment, also informed me that the front rotors and pads were in the red. I asked for an estimate to correct the brakes and was quoted for the oil change and alignment and brakes...right around a 1000.00 bucks...what? I passed on the brake job...! Later in the week, I pull off the wheels and check out the brakes and...wait for it...didn't need changed! Now grant you, not a mechanic am I, but have been fixing vehicles for over forty years now and only recently due to back problems have I been paying for those services. Give me a break (brake) pep boys and fix your staff. Never again and I'll tell who want to listen the same.

The Pep Boys I am complaining about the manager at pep boys!! at least that's who he said he was!!

My son dropped his mazda off with keys & a complaints note of the car running hot & making noises under hood at 3:39 am on 10/26/19! He was out driving so the next morning I called to see what was the matter with the car & how much it might cost! Also by the time the pep boys opened the car also didn't start anymore! So the pep boys guy said the car needed a water pump, 2 can belts & a battery! He even explained that the battery was leaking on the fan belts & that caused the damage to the fan belts! He also it would be about $1000.00
So on wednesday 10/30/19 the manager calls & says the car is ready but it won't start! We knew that the battery was damaged that's why it leaked on the fan belts! So there in the phone this management from a price of $1000 without battery (which should have been part of the bill since day one) then he says $1189 then I complain the battery was supposed to be already included then he says $1050! By the time my son got there to pick up the car this manager says
$1189! I feel like this guy took advantage of us! Then to top it of all of a sudden after we start home a tire starts leaking (it was fine when we stopped the car off). This manager or this pep boys is unprofessional & cheaters!

The Pep Boys problem with starter

So my car was taking some tries to finally start. Lights on the dashboard are working so I know it can't be the battery. I bring it to Pep Boys on Saturday. They substitute the battery. I stop on my way home for gas. Car doesn't start again. I return to Pep Boys.
I leave the car overnight and get called on Sunday for an estimate of 1000 to fix alternator. Alternator get fixed. Pick the car Monday. Get stuck again. Car doesn't work. Bring car back. They say there's no fault. Come pick the car again on Tuesday night. Car doesn't start. Finally they say it's the starter and tell me I have to pay all over again for the part and labor at a discounted price. On the meantime I paid already 150 dollars on uber plus the 882 on the alternator. I'm still waiting to get my car fixed and a refund for the mistake on diagnostic.
