Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] improper customer service

I moved out of a house due to a rape. I called as well as others numerous times to have kcpl shut my service off. They show no record of these calls, nor do they show record if some more recent calls. I have several things showing I did not live there, all of which they stated was proof I did. The dates and paperwork I have that they are basing things off of do not add up to my landlords date she lied about. Even dates they have in their records of certain things add up to my timeline I have given of moving out. I was told to provide a police report of my rape and that's ALL they need. Then told it meant nothing.I was told today, idk why we would want that, yet have record of them requesting it in their system. Not sure why they put me through that for no reason either.More than one record requesting it. Then told the reason the investigation went the way it did, I then got all my paperwork together proving their information..exact info they based this decision off of was inncorrect. They tell me sending that in won't matter. Now, the excuse being that they have no record of a shut off call from me or others at all.Their records are obviously not getting entered every call. New, recent calls. No record either. Hmmm. I had other utilities shut off and they claimed their investigation showed I had it ALL on. I have proof The supervisors consistently gave incorrect information, contradicting themselves multiple times in the same conversation and then laughed and bashed me and questioned me for getting an advocate to help out and call with me. They claim they recorded this last call, but also claimed they never said something they clearly did to two of us, my husband and I both during the call. Considering how inconsistent they are, no choice but to have someone else there to verify the fact their stuff does not add up at all. It's been a mess. 3 months of it non stop now. If their was clearly and incorrect and unfair investigation than, obviously they should look into stuff a bit more and not lie about things they didn't check on, cause I checked and found different as I knew I would..knowing I did not live there. These people are a complete joke.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] the service all around!

Crazy to me how they can immediately shut power off no warning one day and as soon as we pay the full balance they find it humane to take as much time as possible like a whole day and a half to restore power . This is the 2nd time this has happened dealing with this horrible electric co I have a 7 year old daughter just as quick as you can turn the power off with no notice you'd think they could do the same thing once the bill is PAID IN FULL ! no payment arrangements because they've never heard of such thing! It's 2016 I remember living in DE. On the east coast 10 years ago having my electric being cut off as soon as I called to pay the bill not even an hr later my services were connected no problem. Where in the hell is this co from where they cant restore power on as soon as the full bill is paid. To have to wait a whole 24 hrs + come on! To make matters worse its the only electric co available so sad. There should be options so people don't have to deal with this kind of cruelty! Abusing there control of services. Disgusting!

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] "transferred" charge on my current bill from 10 years ago.

I am a liver transplant recipient surviving on Social Security Disability Income of $990.00 per month and 100% disabled. I require a temperature and humidity regulated environment per Kansas University Medical Center transplant team/M.D.'s. I am very frugal and am not in arrears of any KCPL service bills since I moved to KC in 2011. While reviewing my bill on 07/03/16 I noticed a "transferred" charge of $772.01 dated 06/23/2016 on my account via their internet site that was not reflected on my bill of 06/13/2016. I called customer service and was told by Christini #2730, that the charge was approx. 10 years old from an address that I have never lived at in KCMO. There is no supporting documentation online nor was any offered by the agent. My bill of 6/13 has charges due of $70.41 that was paid 7/03. No other charges or statement regarding the "transferred" charge of $772.01 is seen. This action is troubling. I am on a fixed income and cannot pay their "transferred" charge. I wonder how many others KCPL has attempted this type of extortion on.
1) "Transferred" charge is almost 10 years ago. KCPL responded with me needing to supply proof of residency from 10 years back. I do not keep 10 year old residency records. Why is this on me?
2) Have had an active and up to date account with KCPL since 2011. Why is this being brought up now?
3) The accumulated charge of $772.01 is well above the amount KCPL allows for residential customers.
4) Have repeatedly asked for documentation. None provided.
5) I have filed a complaint with the BBB of Greater KC. KCPL is not a member and there is nothing they can do.
6) I have filed a complaint with the MO Public Service Commission with no response.

I am unsure as how to contest this. I have found no avenues nor been provided any. Hoping you can help.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] customer service

These people have no interest in the customer. As others have mention, I had my power disconnected and paid shortly thereafter but they would not reconnect until the next day...not even make an attempt to do so. The customer service people are arrogant, I guess one would except with a monopoly. I'm going to get rid of my thermostat which lets them control power during the summer. They do nothing for me, I do nothing for them. It's companies like this which makes Bernie Sanders look like a good candidate

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] scam

Summer 2014 - KCP&L claims a meter transponder malfunction caused under reporting of electricity usage for an extended period, and back-bills for approximately $800. Upon request, KCP&L was either unwilling or unable to show any evidence that a malfunction had actually occurred, or any actual data to back their claim. Despite my continued objections and denied requests for information, I agreed to a payment plan that would repay the debt over six month's time. Payments were made in excess of the agreed repayment amount for three months; however, the third payment was three days late. KCP&L sent me a demand for payment in full immediately with threats to disconnect power. Funds were tight, and my budget was planned for the agreed repayment options. Despite my offer to pay the bill in full over two months time, KCP&L demanded that I either pay the bill in full immediately, or accept a "budget plan" that incorporated the back-billed amount to be paid over a 12-month period. November 2015 - KCP&L has collected 13 payments at the same "budget plan rate", and my account balance is now greater than a full payment in my favor. According to "Mindy" in customer service, KCP&L has incorporated the balance in my favor to include the >$300 of my money they are holding into the payment plan schedule for the next 12 months, and REFUSES to re-balance the budget to zero before before setting the budget plan rate. In other words she told me, "F*%k you, we are going to hold money we owe you for the next twelve months." The only other option provided was to not participate in the budget plan. KCP&L is a SCAMMER and an ABUSER of their paying customers. Should I respond in kind and send threatening letters to them weekly until they pay me what they owe me? I would be open to ANY alternative electricity provision to avoid doing business with KCP&L. I believe the business practices they are engaged in are at the very least unethical, and could likely be classified as fraudulent.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] address and residence

KCPL put me on my brother account cause I used his address for my mailing address, I have been homeless for 2 years 4 months 26 days and that's is the only reason why I use his address. I got food stamps showing that 4529 Olive St. Kansas City, MISSOURI 64130 was ONLY my mailing address.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] will not restore power, but bill does not belong to me

My husband and I assumed my great aunts mortgage before her house went into foreclosure, due to health issues, her service with KCPL was in danger of being disconnected, she contacted them, made the first required payment, but due to health issues was unable to pay more. They disconnected her service. She has moved from the home and been gone, she has called them to give her new address and phone number and make arrangements for her bill. I call to have service put into my name but was told they will not restore service until her bill is paid. Her bill has nothing to do with us, nor were we even living in the area at the time. She had never been disconnected before, she might have been late but never disconnected. Now we have gone a very cold winter and and extremely hot summer with no electricity, as we can not afford to move, all of our money is invested into this house. It is all electric so nothing works. I have tried many times to work something out with them, even offered to put down a deposit, but was denied each and every time until this $1200 dollar bill is paid in full, which has now gone to collections. I have exhausted every effort but will not stop until we are allowed to have electricity. We have small children and pets and are desperate to have this utility

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] turned off power

I missed my payment of 104.00. Apparently they left it off to pay current charges and not apply to the back balance in May. The guy comes to my house I run to get dressed, come outside he is gone a note on the door! "Came to collect 104.00 check marked, service turned off call..." Never rang my bell nor knocked as I was home and would have readily paid! Called them immediately, Customer Service was rude, might be 24 hours before they can get back to turn it on! Wow! He was gone all of 5 minutes! Couldn't turn around and come back? NO! They have to "schedule" him! I have a good mind to go outside and cut the red lock off the meter! It's in the 90's today and I have my grandson coming over! Absolutely riduculous and unnecessary! I've lived here 11 years and always pay my bills!

We had the EXACT same thing happen to us today. KCPL doesn't care about their customers. They're the only utility company I've ever dealt with that doesn't turn devices back on same day bill is paid. They've got the monopoly. They're being ***holes because they CAN. My husband has to have a CPAP machine for severe sleep apnea. We got the whole spill about that and the hoops we have to jump through, but I told that representative on the phone that if anything happens to him tonight in acct of not having that machine, I'll be suing them. They're horrendous.

KCP&L has the worst customer service. They tack on all these fees. A $40 electric bill adds up to over $75 after taxes, customer fees, and other misc charges that aren't explained.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] overlooked

Hi my name is Bobbie Shull I started taking care of my disabled father back in 1995 and I have never had this kind of problems until I moved to Kansas City Missouri. We have called KCP&L many many times previously about our utility bills, and their only comments were "Our readings are accurate if you do not pay your going to be shut off" we live off of monthly incomes so when your electricity bill goes from $176.00 straight to $4-500.00 in a 1 month span that lasts for a few months at that rate and nothing has changed at the home, common sense tells you somethings wrong and even though they were seeing the exact same bills that I was viewing online still they wouldn't look into any of it for us.
Since my neighbor next door passed away back in April and he was a Electrician/cable I found out recently and I even looked for myself that he had electricity for the passed 3-4 years and he didn't even have a meter until just recently when even after all the phone calls and shutting our lights off and then back on all the money I have payed KCP&L in Aug 2012 they turned my utilities off once again and we have been using a generator ever since and now KCP&L refuses to speak to us and finally admits someone has tampered with our house and the neighbors meter except now KCP&L insinuating that it my home at fault and neither my disabled father nor I know the first thing about electricity except flipping the switch on and off, but now its getting colder outside our electricity is off and I can't get any help from KCP&L in getting it back on instead they tell us they cant speak to us that we are to call Revenue Protection so I found their number they tell me they can't help us either.
So myself, disabled father, 6 kids ages range from 16 years down to twins that are 4 years old and out of money, propane, and help.

I'm came to Kansas City to spend a couple months before I decided to move here permanently. I have yet to meet a single person that has anything positive to say about kcp&l or Missouri gas energy. Comcast cable seems to be the 3rd most hated. What is it wit the utilities in KC? You look at your customers in black and white, instead of grey. You can't punish one person because 9 others were dishonest and really were stealing electricity. And the differences I saw in power bills from one month to the next tells even a lay person like myself something is not right. You check a meter and say, "Yep, its working right." The meter may be correct on the amount used, but the amount used by that household isn't correct. Im sorry you have to deal with such uncooperative service provides Kansas City. You are welcome to join me back in Colorado Springs anytime.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] horrible customer service

After falling on hard times I got behind on bills lights gas rent even food. I received a disconnect call from KCP&L and so I called to try and set up payment arrangements. My past due is over $100 dollars. Now im telling the agent Janette I cant afford my rent right now I have two children and im going to food pantrys and agencies for my rent I dont have close to $100 dollars for anything but I can pay something. She was so cold hearted and vague. Clearly she didn't care about my situation or me and my children being without electricy. I pray for people like her and this company because karma is real and all these companies who have no hearts and regard for people and children will have to answer for it oneday. May God have mercy on them and their families.

They have absolutely no customer service. They are the power company they feel like they have the right to do whatever they want and do not treat people like human beings. Whether you make a mistake or not they are completely unwilling to help. They say it takes time for technicians to come out. It took him less than a minute to turn the power off it should take him less than a minute to turn it on. We need another electric company in town so they can get their heads out of their ### and start treating people better! I know this complaint will mean nothing to anyone. They will just keep doing what they're doing because they can. This entire experience has been completely unbelievable!

I also have mobile home and they have been charging me the wrong rate and will not reimburse, I have all electric and was being billed the rate if you have electric and gas, it is a higher rate in the winter. I had to prove this to them when I found out about this, no one was living in mobile home and water heater turned down, not laundry or using stove, heat at 60-65, and the rate was lowered but it is still $200 a month and it has vinyl siding and shingled roof, and all they can say is it has been cold, or look at you usage last year, yes when it was occupied and the rate was higher, not sure what this offset is, but there must be something going on, I belonged to a coop and the electric was never this high and 4 people were living in it, something about a 8% profit

When I joined KCP&L for 1st time, for 2 years I had an illegal offset put to my meter,
this is the same piece that most Electric Service Providers OUTLAWED in most states.
Which raises your bill to amounts you don't use, then I call to find out why my bills
so high and asked credit for the overcharge of 2 years, they refused to credit account.
After suffering a power surge (like normal), they didn't replace the meter hit in the blast
that has actual scorch marks still on it. When I called Customer Service to dispute bill
got disconnected because of cell, immediately after they send a letter RAISING the monthly billing premium on me, when I was under a locked plan, no warning now they did it again, I don't own a huge home, with seperate floors, etc it's a mobile home But by billing statements is equal to mansion instead. Who is the right person to talk to over the fraud on my account is what I like to know,
after you called the company and get no answer to complaints.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] auto

I was on autodraft with KCPL. This month I had some unexpected expenses come up so I called in before the draft date to see about holding it until Friday when I got paid (2 days). When customer service answered I was informed they send the payment drafts to the bank 3 days prior to the draft date and there was nothing they could do. They wouldn't even go to billing to ask if it could be held. They wouldn't connect me to the billing department either. They just said, "There is nothing I can do." The Customer Service Supervisor even went as far as to say, "I don't know why you don't get it." What I didn't get is why I was being strong-armed and why a couple of days is like asking for the moon. I do not believe there is absolutely nothing they an do. Autopay is sold to the consumer as a convenience but in reality it is just a way for KCPL to have direct access to your bank account and remove the consumer from the picture. If I were paying my bill with them manually I would have had the convenience of paying the bill a couple days after the due date to accomodate my budget if needed. When I signed up for autopay I didn't realize I was going to be pushed out of the way so they could just dip into my account regardless of what I, the consumer, have going on. I was under the impression I still had some control. I guess that isn't the case. Now I get to pay the bill and the extra charges from the bank.

When you give any company access to your bank account by automatic withdrawal you have given over control of your money. They can make a mistake and wipe out your entire account. Then it's up to you to fight for your money back. NEVER give control of your money to anyone. Pay your bills yourself online. Don't trust anyone. Learn that lesson and you will not be taken advantage of or screwed over by any company.
Second, automatic payments cannot be stopped quickly. You should not be upset with KCPL. Be upset with yourself for having unreasonable expectations. That is why you pay your own bills and never allow any company access to your accounts. Got it? It takes around thirty days to make a change to automatic payments. Weeks at the least. Now you know this. You agreed to let payments be taken out yet you get angry when a company can't rearrange the world at the last minute to suit you.
I don't work for KCPL. I'm just a responsible adult who is tired of having other "adults" blame their problems and poor decisions on others. You are responsible for you. The world does not revolve around you or your "unexpected expenses". Get an emergency fund together so "unexpected expenses" will not become a life altering event.

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] billing

I have never had electric service with this company before. I have never called them until 2 days ago to get service in my name, nor have I ever agreed to be responsible for any electric service through kcpl. When I signed up for service 2 days ago they said I owed them $450 dollars because my room mate from 3 years ago didn't pay her electric bill, and I lived her, they added my name to the bill, and have charged me for it. She has now filed bankruptcy and they have pinned the entire bill on me. I think it's funny though that when you sign up for service they ask you to verify that you will be the only person responsible for this bill, but they believe anyone who "benefits from this utility at this house" is responsible for the bill. At that rate, anyone who walked by and saw the light coming from the house could be charged. They should not be able to charge anyone for a bill who didn't agree to be billed for a service through them, especially when the person who did order the service agreed to be the only responsible party. People who ride in my car shouldn't be responsible for my car payment, likewise people who watch my tv shouldn't be responsible for my electric bill.

I am a single individual living in a 900 sq ft apt, I am gone 11 hours a day and sleep the normal 7 to 8 hours at night. My air conditioner has never been set lower than 82 degree's and my electric bill runs between $177.00 up to $276.00 a month. How in the hell is this possible? I called to get someone out to check my meter and the rep informed me that the tenants prior to me had much higher electric bill, (who gives a d***) my life style is 100% different than the prior tenants who did not work or sleep normal hours so to compare is ridicules. Since receiving power bill for $276.00 2 months ago I have completely turned my air off, my bill went down $99. and was $177. and now my newest bill is $217. WTH? My neighbor who keeps her air on 76 degree's has a power bill comparable to mine, how does this happen? Grrrrrr!

Kansas City Power & Light [KCP&L] this utility company sucks

KCPL opened a new account for me and did not send my bill to the correct address. We waited and called three times and were accused of not contacting them. Now they want $200 of a $600 bill or they will cut the electric bill by this Friday. I work at a local retailer that does not pay that much and on a fixed income. I also am a Marine Reservist and taking care of my mother.
KCPL was sending my bills to my former residance in TEXAS and is doing nothing to take off late fees and unwilling to work with us at all. Is there anything that can be done? Doesn't seem like it.

I live on a small set income being disabled and elderly. Now KCP&L are charging almost $400.00 a month for electricity. This is a small house but I need electric for my oxygen machine and my son his CPAP. Have tried to get help but everyone is so strapped because all of the low income families need help now. With winter coming the application for LHEAP has been turned in. It only helps with gas. Can't have heat from the furnace without electricity. Now KCP&L will be Evergy. So KCP&L bought out another small company to make their monopoly ever bigger. I am to sick to move or I would. Not ready to die yet but looks like the vile Illuminati, have me pegged as a throw away.

KCP&L automatically enrolled me in budget billing without authorization or notification. They have no evidence that I signed up for the service but claim there is no way for them to do it unless I request it. Now that it's Evergy, my bill is due in 20 days and its 500% higher. I asked about options or a payment plan and Evergy told me they could reduce this month's bill by ten bucks.
I filed a complaint with the MoPSC but it looks like I'm going to be cut off as I certainly don't make that kind of money and have nothing to sell to make up the difference. MoPSC seems to have as much influence as a bug on a windshield. Such shady business. It's amazing what companies can get away with when they have no competition.

It is very sad that you allow a customer to be without service who have small children with asthma and give the run around on when services will be back on. We have asthma and have machines that need to be plugged in to for our health. And to have to wait days without services is poor customer services and you all have no compassion. Unacceptable

Their new billing called "Demand Charge" which allows them to take the highest month charge and bill you that times 12 months even though you only have electricity on for 1 month.

I've tried to move from he residence I was previously resided at, and KCP&L is telling me my name is on the account. I never received a bill while residing there and my name is not on a Account. They are telling me that I'm responsible for the bill and can't obtain services until the bill is paid. Again, I never opened a account at that address.

This is one of the biggest price gouging utility co.s I've ever had the displeasure of relying on for service. There needs to be a special committee formed to investigate this co's billing methods

This company is a monopoly! I couldn't agree more with you all. I called 6 weeks ahead of time so I could upgrade my breaker box. I was told everything was set up. I had scheduled my vacation to do this. I called a week ahead of the time to confirm this and they knew nothing about it! I had to call on my first day of vacation when I was scheduled to work on it and waited for half of a day for them to get there!

I have had to administer two estates with one of them being in Probate. They wanted their payment or they would shut the power off right in the middle of winter. "Too bad, " they said "we want our money. Somebody needs to pay this bill or we will shut off the power. We're so sorry for you loss." Yeah sure you are.

I asked for the Budget Billing to be changed. I sent over Court papers, death certificates, etc... They made an estimate and that was as far as it went. Never got a refund.

When I tried to explain the situation, they hung up on me.

Thanks for the info. I will complain to the PSC.

I had to pay the bill, along with the late fees for a deceased relative that had all of their estate frozen.

I have reported KCP&L to the Missouri Public Utilities commission and recommend others do the same. The only way to catch their attention is to appeal to those who can fine the company for fraudulent billing practices.

I have *twice* in two months received a bill from them that is 50% higher than anything I've paid in the 20+ years I've lived here. When I called customer service they first claimed they were doing a "cycle readjustment which can temporarily result in a higher bill". When I asked them to show me how this worked they could not-- and their online records disagreed with claims they were making.

It turned out my bill was "estimated" rather than a true meter read. Of course such estimates are always extremely high. I demanded a true meter reading (which is done automatically and remotely these days via digital contact-- they no longer use "meter men" for this area). That resulted in a significantly lower bill.

But then I receive my bill for this month, and there it is back up in ludicrous levels again. So I emailed customer service and told them I was asking the Public Service Commission for an audit of their billing practices... and proceeded to do just that.

The company is a monopoly. Complaining will get one no where. Discussion will result in excuses and misinformation if not direct lies. The only recourse the consumer has is to go to the consumer complaint area of PSC.
