On friday, october 2nd, dyfs was alerted to two minors (Ages 6 and 10) being home alone for hours after school in a house with no way to call out in case of emergency due to a lack of working telephones in the home. Having spoke to my son the day this took place, i was able to talk to the attending police officer that was sent to keep an eye on the children until the caseworker arrived, and requested that they keep me informed on what was happening. I gave him my name and number and asked that someone keep in touch with me (I live over 700 miles away) but i was never contacted. The following monday i contacted the dyfs office myself and was told someone would pull up the information and call me back. I didn't receive a call untill the next day, at which point i was told the case would be closed due to the childrens mother telling the caseworker she would be getting a babysitter for them. On the same day i spoke to the caseworker, my children were again home alone after school for an hour and i was told by my oldest son that even though they will be going to a babysitter after school, they will still have to walk home alone and stay there until the sitter arrives to pick them up, which could range from thirty to sixty minutes every day. Also, the things the caseworker told me my son said and how he felt about the situation are the complete opposite of everything he has ever said to me regarding the situation from the very first time it happened. I am planning on continuing to attempt a line of communication with their office to persuade them to keep the case open but i have every intention of taking this to another level to be heard.
