West Coast Auto Mall Sold Car from underneath me

After reading several complaints on West Coast Auto, I am so fortunate that my deal with them fell threw. I started my initial car search at local dealerships, test drove a couple of cars, and then went on Ebay to compare prices. This is when I saw the listing for a Lexus IS 250 that Chris Gamble had listed on Ebay for $7, 245 below NADA. This should have been my first sign. Normally, a deal that is to good to be true, is too good to be true.

I called Chris Gamble on Tuesday, January 25th to ask him detailed questions about the car he was selling. After hearing all the right answers, I gave him a $500 deposit through paypal on Wednesday, . This is when I booked a one-way ticket to Tampa. I intended to fly down and drive the car back to NC. On Saturday, I received the email below.

Kristin,

Sorry I just got this message I was out of town. I have some bad news. I told my lot guy to put this vehicle into the sold lot before I left. When I went up to work this evening the car was gone. One of my guys sold the car because it was not put in the sold lot. I spoke to my salesman and he said the customer was already driving it back to Texas. I am very sorry this happen and I can do one of two things. There is a big weekend sale right now for Lexus. There are a couple black IS250 and a couple white ones. They are all 2007's. The white has 48K miles and navigation and 42K miles with no navigation and both with black interior. The two blacks have 21K and 27K miles. I think I can get either of the white cars for the same price and probably within $500 for the two black ones with the low miles. The auction ends at 2:00PM on Monday and we can pick up the car anytime after that. If this is something that you would like to do or if there is another color you may want let me know. The second option is if you want to just cancel the deal let me know and I will return the deposit ASAP. Once again I am sorry and I hope you let me make this up by maybe getting you a car with even less miles than the one you were looking at.

Have a great night,

Chris

At the time, I was very disappointed. If a deposit was made, shouldn't the paperwork and keys be pulled?! I asked a car salesman at a reputable dealership about this "mistake" and he said that would have never happened at any of the places he worked because the proper documents are completed to let others know a deposit was made on a particular car on your lot.

Chris Gamble also knew I was flying down to pick up the vehicle. I called to ask him about how this would be handled and he dodged the question by telling me to keep my flight because he would buy a car if not a better one at the auction. This is when I asked for my paypal deposit back and luckily that was returned. The plane ticket was my loss. It must have been a blessing in disguise. It was a small price to pay for a lesson well learned. I could have been out thousands of dollars on a car that could have broken down on the way home.

My advice is to do your research not only on the car but on the company your buying from. I got so caught up in the moment of getting a good deal that I failed to do proper research on the Internet for [redacted]s or complaints from previous customers.

If you haven't read the article on [redacted], report #364699, take Edwards advice! Invest in Autocheck, Carfax reports as well as an inspector. It might save you hundreds if not thousands of your hard working dollars.

Just a quick footnote on utilizing Experian's Autocheck systems. Autocheck is incorrect, reporting accidents that are not associated with the VIN number, and often incomplete where accident have occurred. DO NOT USE Experian's AUTOCHECK. If an error has occurred on a VIN, you can contact them until you're blue in the face and they don't have the professional courtesy to respond, let alone correct their error on vehicle reports.

USE EXPERIAN'S AUTOCHECK AT YOUR OWN RISK!

West Coast Auto Mall West Coast Auto Mall - Chris Gamble, Dana Gamble and Steve Ketchum Sell Devalued, Damaged Cars on AutoTrader.com, Ebay and Cars.com

Hello. If you have found a car from West Coast Auto Mall (or Palm Harbor Auto Mall), then PLEASE read this report. It could save you thousands if you listen! Please do not Gamble with them! Bank of America won't touch them and neither will most major lenders.

WHO:
West Coast Auto Mall (d/b/a Palm Harbor Auto Mall) is owned by Chris Gamble and Dana Gamble, a husband and wife team. Steve Ketchum is their charming sales guy, who is usually the person at their car lot. This trio represents the 'family owned and operated' West Coast Auto Mall.

WHY:
I am warning you about West Coast Auto Mall because 70% of their cars have been in an accident, have auction announced frame damage, or have odometer rollover/tampering evidence. You may lose thousands in repairs or find your 'deal' is truly too good to be true. The Gambles promote CarFax on their websites and ads; however, CarFax does NOT show 'auction announced damage' reports. CarFax will show branded title, but it does NOT show these vital, informative auction announcements. (Please see ending where their current vin numbers that have evidence reports)

AUTOCHECK IS AWESOME:
If you want the auction announcement reports that the dealers hear before they bid on a car, then you need to use AutoCheck. I totally endorse CarFax as a supplement; however, AutoCheck.com will show auction announcements, as well as, accident reports. These auction announcements are for warnings that dealer hears BEFORE they bid on a potential car at auction. And yes, auto auctions are where the Gambles, being independent used car dealers, get most of their cars.

Right now, if you AutoCheck the 72 cars on the Gamble's have advertised, then you will find that 49 have been in accidents, have frame damage reports, or had odometer rollover/tampering evidence. That's a whopping 70%. That Gamble means the house almost always wins, even if they sell you a car for a price that appears to be a bargain. (Please see ending where their current vin numbers that have evidence reports)

WHERE THEY ADVERTISE:
Autotrader.com (currently all 72 cars)
Cars.com (which links to various websites including Autos.Yahoo.com)
Justgoodcars.com (currently 22 cars)
Ebay (currently 5 cars),
and their own website http://west-coast-automall.ebizautos.com/dealership-info.aspx (currently 18 car ads)

CONDITION REPORTS:
If you go to the West Coast Auto Mall website, currently you will see 18 of their cars advertised here. Eight of these cars were announced with frame damaged and/or unibody damaged, or have reported accidents. So, what does West Coast Auto Mall say about these 8 cars? That's a great question. So, here we go.

The Gamble's include their personal 'condition report' on your potential car purchase. These condition reports are also posted for the above 8 cars. Five of these devalued vehicles have a statement that there are “No known accidents'. The remaining 3 cars (which are all Lexus models) have accident reports that were sent to CarFax The Gamble's down play the general CarFax description of “accident reported". I do not know how frame damage and unibody damage can be down played, but the Gambles sure give it a great shot. Check out these terrific examples:

Example #1:
07 Lexus ES 350 - VIN JTHBJ46G472098559
The Gambles state, “The CarFax states the car was in an accident. It looks like there was some minor paint work on the back of the vehicle".

What does AutoCheck state? Accident record(s) reported through state agencies or independent sources. Frame damage record(s). Accident reported. Case #: [protected]. Auction announced as unibody damage.

Example #2:
05 Lexus LS 430 - VIN JTHBN36F250180465
The Gambles state, “The CarFax states that the car was in a front end accident. I have had the vehicle inspected and it looks like it was minor. The car looks and drives great and you cannot tell that anything has been done".

What does AutoCheck state? Accident record(s) reported through state agencies or independent sources. Frame damage record(s). Front impact with another vehicle. Case #: [protected]. Auction announced as frame damage. Auction announced as unibody damage.

Example #3:
06 Lexus SC430 - VIN JTHFN48Y369002860
The Gambles state, “I bought this vehicle from a local Lexus dealer with no problems. I did notice some paint work on the front end of the car and it looks like the passenger side fender may have been off the car. The title is clean and there is no frame damage to the car".

What does AutoCheck state? Accident record(s) reported through state agencies or independent sources. Case #:[protected].

“FACTORY WARRANTY":
Here's a warning about your “factory warranty". The damage done to your vehicle will void areas that can be traced to your car's accident or damage. The Gambles love to advertise with 'full factory warranty' and “still under factory warranty', but what does their contract state? All vehicles sold by West Coast Auto Mall are 'AS IS'. If a vehicle comes with the balance of a manufactures warranty, then this is between the buyer and the manufacturer.

THE CONTRACT THEY HAVE YOU SIGN:
No matter what they tell you, and no matter what they advertise, this will be on the BACK of your contract:

1. All promises, statements, understandings or agreements….are expressly waived.

2. West Coast Auto Mall does their best to inspect all vehicles but we only guarantee a clear title with no brands. We do not guarantee the vehicle has never been in any type of accident.

3. All vehicles sold by West Coast Auto Mall are 'AS IS'. If a vehicle comes with the balance of a manufactures warranty, then this is between the buyer and the manufacturer.

4. All used cars are sold AS-IS, no warranty. You will pay all costs for any repairs needed. The dealer assumes no responsibility for any repairs, regardless of any oral statement about the vehicle.

NOTE: If you buy a used car, please use AutoCheck, as well as, CarFax. Also, please pay to have it inspected. Also, I recommended paying the extra $5 to upgrade your AutoCheck and CarFax accounts for a 60 day subscription. Dog all your dealer's vin numbers – ALL OF THEM. It may reveal you are dealing with one of those shady used car dealers – it's truly NOT a cliché. Best wishes and luck to you all.

thank you, thank you, thank you. Almost just bought a lexus from them, but found your c0mments and did the autocheck. Youwere spot on...it had been in a wreck that carfax missed.

The problem is that there are no consequences for these parasites. In the old days, s0meone would have broken an elbow here and there to give them some guidance about dealing honerstly. Then again, it seems like these days they are small time compared to the BIG scammers - AIG, Ken Lewis, etc.

ANyway, can't thank you enough.
