After working all day and wanting to go grocery shopping to get something to fix for dinner the store at south ridge walmart in west virginia was crowded to the max, , there was only 1/3 of the cashiers open, the lines were backed up 40 feet or more, check out time was 45 mins to 1 hour long, , this happens every weekend this is rediculous something need to be done to get more cashiers open or for myself and others we will start going to other grocery stores, , , your help with this matter would be greatly appreciate...

the only thing i ask is the store like walmart should have more cashiers on certain days, , like the first of the month, when most people shop, , thats all, it will not break them to have a few more cashiers then, , not all the time, just when they know their days are busy, , and they know when that is, , , it would make life for walmart shoppers better, , , and i will stop shopping there believe me...

I'm no Wally fan by any stretch of the imagination, but you have to understand, all those cashier lanes are to be open for the holidays only - not for regular business days.
Keeping cashier counts low is how they keep prices low, and if you found 1/3 of the cashier lanes open, you were lucky because out of 20+ registers, we're usually lucky to find 3-4 open here in NC which is why we no longer buy food at Walmart - by the time we get through a checkout line, the meat is warm and the ice cream is a puddle on the floor beneath the cart.

Finally!

A VALID complaint, and one we've experienced at ALL of the Walmart stores in our area for years and years and years.

Since Sam died, Walmart has rapidly gone downhill in search of the holy $$$ instead of in search of good customer service which was ALWAYS Sam's FIRST priority.

The fact that people have to revert to name calling is in so many ways entertaining. The fact that actually amuses me rather than upsetting me is simply a plus on my side. My apologies that your attempt at offending me or goading me.. or whatever you wanted to happen didn't.

Really the best thing to do is just to stop talking. Obviously nobody is in the caring box as to what you say. Stealth probably doesn't care and is going to say and do whatever she wants anyways so why the hell do you feel the need to be obnoxious to the rest of us by ###. ### is pointless, although on occasion amusing.

I would probably have more to say cept well I'm kinda really sick and on pain killers at the moment so my ability have rational conversation is slightly dimmed at the moment. So therefore perhaps once my pain killers run thier course I'll come back and have a reply more befitting myself and the subject. Until then I'm going ot go lay on teh couch and watch some show I could care less about and fall asleep. =) Have a nice day.

Stealth the Cretin doesn't have an honest opinion, only ones to stir up folks. She or He is just a fowl mouthed person, not worthy of posting on this site. And frankly I have no prob with using bad language - it's just not appropriate in a forum like this.

I enjoy the majority of Stealth's posts... I don't mind someone who is willing to state their honest opinion. What annoys the Hell out of me is that there is more arguing over who is posting than anything else on most of the things I've looked a where Stealth has posted.

Considering I live in California and she lives in Texas I finished paying for what I was buying and went out to the truck to finish the conversation. Now see, it's my opinion that it's rude to ignore a call as well, but as I said I usually will tell the person I'll call them back when I've finished. It's not always an emergency either. After all hearing about how whoever's date was isn't an emergency.. or someone calling to say that they just got a new item in this game or that... those would be calls that I'd tell the person "I'll call you back in a few minutes when I'm done checking out." On a side note.. even though I was on the phone I didn't hold up the line. As soon as everything was on the belt I pulled my card out and was ready to pay when she was finished scanning.

Okay I have worked as Walmart not as a cashier, but as overnight stocker. I can tell you that even though it seems to you that people at Walmart don't care or whatever.. that's not alway true. It's the individuals that don't care not the company staff as a whole. Hell, I remember a little old lady who was probably about 85 or 90 that would come in once a week to shop in the middle of the night. If I saw her around the store I'd ask for my break when she was checking out in order to help her take her groceries out and put them in her car. Of course that has nothing to do with working at Walmart since I could be walking through a random parking lot on a random day and if I saw someone that looked like they need help I'd offer.

Secondly, I have worked at as a Cashier at Target... during Christmas. Believe me the Cashiers are as stressed about how long their lines are as the customers. Sometimes yes it's the cashier's fault because they have the frame of mind "I hate my job and I don't care" so they're slow. Most of the time, though, the wait is in fact due to idiots and slow customers in said line. Believe it or not being a cashier at a store like that can be very difficult.

Also, I worked for a company (yes I've had manymany different jobs... I travel a lot.. hence the screen name.. but I digress) that took care of the calls whenever they had alarms of any sort go off at the stores.. or well any general emergency as well. When I say alarms I don't just mean fire alarms or theft alarms.. Every refrigeration unit in the entire store has various alarms on it. Each time the alarms go off they have to call it in and someone has to come in to fix it. Those calls aren't cheap and we would get an average of at least 10 Rack A alarms per day. My point.. Walmart has more less known expenses than the general public thinks. It's not just "Pay the staff, buy the products and pay the rent".

On the cell phone note: I'm one of those people who talks on their cell phone a lot and I'm not going to deny it. I have talked on my cell phone when checking out at Walmart, but most of the time I tell whoever I'm on the phone with to hold on unless it's an important conversation. Point being that granted most of the people talking on their phones in line are just rude pains in the ### you don't know what their conversation is about and therefore don't know the importance. I got a call from my mom when I was in line at Walmart telling me that my stepdad had another heart attack. I wasn't going to tell her to hold on a sec or that I'd call her back cause I had to pay for a few things.

I try to see both sides of a situation and in Dave's situation.. he's an idiot, a liar and someone who needs to realize there's a world outside of his created one that the rest of us actually live in.

On the note of ###s talking on their phone in line, PUT THE PHONE DOWN. I don't understand how people can always be on the phone whether its talking or texting. Now myself its not like i don't talk to people no i have many people to talk to, i just don't need to be stuck on my damn phone 24/7 i don't want to talk if its not important and don't text me either unless its important. No need to always be on a damn phone and i hate people who do that.

You know what else i hate in regards to not only Walmart, but any store. How about those jerks that just stop in the middle of an aisle and start browsing or shopping thus making it impossible for anyone to get through, stop being a jerk and go to your left or right no reason why you should be blocking an aisle!

I definitely agree. The customers contribute to the slow speed of a check-out lane 99% of the time. What I hate is when there is a long line and someone finally makes it to the front, where they just begin writing their check or they "forget" something and have to run back. When you have that free time, you should be completely prepared. There is no excuse for that.

Also, to add on to stealth's point, different registers receive different amounts of traffic. When I worked at a grocery store, we had 10 registers. 7 would open first, followed by 5, and then 2. Believe it or not, most people would completely ignore the first available register.

I guess that makes sense... I guess sometimes are better than others... I just noticed the other day I was waiting in a line almost back to the clothing racks and just kind of looked up through the line and notcied there was only 1 customer in the front line... So I just moved up there and was gone in no time! But, I can understand what you are saying Stealth Pilot...

Its Walmart, you have to expect long lines, its always been that way... One thing I dont understand though is the way they open the checkout lines at these stores... They have 2 checkout lines, one in front of the other and they only open these 2 so the front checkout line can only be so long before it runs into the checkout counter behind... Then you have a bunch of non-open lines on down the rows... Just open all of the front counter! Doesnt really make sense...

I agree with everyone saying this is stupid. One, it is simple economics, and two, your ignorant comment about shopping at kroger instead of walmart. I, for one, have worked in both stores. They both have the same influx of shoppers. Also, don't go at rush times, which is, yes, typically the first week of every month, and hours when people typically get off work, IE noon, three, five - six. You want to know a great time to go to walmart? 2 - 7 or 8 AM. PS- I work at a WV Walmart and I'm tired of people who act like their money smells better than the person behind them. YOUR time seems to be too invaluable to be spent, ohmygod, in line at Walmart! I have a life, too, that doesn't consists of pushing into overtime for people who aren't already grateful for the service provided to them.

the problem is a combonation of all noted in the comments, peak or non-peak hours dictating the discretion of walmart to have available the personell to handle the crowds, while the fraustration is warranteed, the effectiveness of cashiers at the ready is a costly thing for the retailer especially when their are fewer shoppers at certain times . this does not surfice to the wouldbe shopper who barrels around the store at speedway mentallity only to be twarted at the cash register by a freight train-like checkout line and thus being held up for countless other reasons such as price checks, newly hiered cashiers ect. it is a anaumaly that is not soon to go away . it is probably a good idea to plan ahead before hand the trip to any reatailer so as to minimize the effects of undesirable time delays that can't always be predicted while shopping . but on the other hand we as individuals expect to mark-1 through any store at record speeds as we are selfesh and arrogant in our expectations of the stores that we frequent . hopefully there can be a balance in our experiences abroad in the world of goods and services . and we can better be informed personally when we ask ourselves, what kind of service am i administering to my constiuents and would i be graded in my services the same way i expect the retailers to provide ?

Walwart is not going to hire more cashiers. They know people will shop there because of "low prices". There prices aren't that low. If you pay attention to what you buy, you can go into any store and beat walmart. They are a billion dollar company, I honestly don't know how.

I rarely buy groceries from walmart for this reason. Ice cream is melted before you get to the car. I will pay more to avoid standing in line for a half hour.

Great subject. I personally do not shop at Wal-Mart for many reasons. I have come to realize that a persons time is a commodity especially with the wealthy and the value assigned to that time should is instrumental along with additional factors when choosing a destinations for purchases. One question for you others. If given the choice would you forgo the door greeter for an additional cashier, as I find their role in preventing shoplifting limited at best. I mean no disrespect to those who currently hold that position.

I agree there never seems to be enough cashiers.
Also at our Walmart I have not found any English speaking clerks. (They do know how to say "I don't understand") Only in the Subway shop (in WalMart ) do they speak English.

Another "it's all about me" rant without thinking it through.
Why do you think that you are getting that bucket of lard and jumbo box of bathroom tissue for ten bucks?
More cashiers mean higher prices and the lines are shorter later at night and early mornings.
It pays to be proactive in the matters.

OMG, I know exactly what you are talking about. I live in Columbia TN and at this Walmart location (no matter the day or time) there is never enough cashiers. My husband and I purchased a 50 inch screen television and could not fit it into our car, so we were told that they would leave it at the service desk and we could go home to get the truck. Well we he arrived back at the service desk he stood in line for 45 min and when he finally got to the front of the line he was told they needed to call someone to help him carry it out. That was fine he said but then waited 30 mins and no one showed up, so he told them and they called someone again. Then finally after another 30 min someone showed up to help.
Another complaint about Walmart is their pharmacy. My husbands doctor faxed over a script but there was an error on it that said the strength was 5, 7.5/750mg and instead of contacting the doctor they filled it 5/500mg because that was the dosage on his last script for the same med. But this time the doctor had raised the strength and after my husband got home he notice the mistake and by this time the doctors office was closed and it was Friday, so he had to wait until Monday (this was a pain med). When Monday came there was no news and Tuesday no news, so my husband called and they said they would fax the doctor. Well long story short, it took 2 weeks before he got it straightened out. I have more complaints about Walmart but I am out of space

If you're shopping after work, it's no wonder the store is crowded! Stores do have busy times, but it wouldn't make sense to schedule a cashier to come in for an hour or so during this peak. I've worked as a cashier (not at Wal-Mart) on and off for about four years and there are few things I hate more than getting complaints about the long lines... it's not our fault people like to shop at the same time! There's also the occasional customer who will have problems with their transaction and cause the line to back up, but they can't really hire more cashiers just to cover those situations. Also, like someone else mentioned, Wal-Mart is the greediest company in the entire world! They're not going to hire extra cashiers!

I have 3 differnt managers all kissing up and saying I didn't get threatened. So I guess when they check the cameras that sees where he went to the back where I was alone, he went back there to scatch his ###. Because the trash is not, in the back, its piled at the front. And while he went back to scratch his ###, he actually went back with nothing and came back with nothing. I've been to the police before. They are going to say I'm making it up. You see, there are no witnesses, and the guy is in cahoots with the manager just like the go. is in cahoots with your money. Ever hear of a makeup? Xenophobicons: I LOVE Trader Joe's! It's wonderful. And even the rich sale shop. Why pay more for the same product you could get elsewhere?

In the end, I really don't understand why Dave shops at Wal-Mart at all. Cost is no issue to him and he wants speedy service which he apparently is not getting. Why stay?

If you continue to patronize that business you are saying you agree with the situation. You can complain to a manager to get your voice heard, but if they do not correct then you should stop shopping there.

If you keep giving someone money they are going to believe that you are okay with the current business practices, select, cashier selection, etc.
