Just wanted to let people know how these unclaimed property sites are scaming consumers.
lets say your name is John Doe and you use the free search tool to see if you are one of the 9 in 10 americans that have some unclaimed property. well you enter your name and it comes back with a result for the total amount out there in the name john doe that MAY belong to you. well now you think that there might possibly be something out there for you. of course you pay their fee and login to see the details and what state or federal agency is hold ing the money in the name of John Doe. but wait, there is no john doe on the list at all... there is a kevin doe, rob doe, adam doe, ect... but not your name, John... whats up with that.
while there are ligitemate funds out there for some of the people doing the free search. if you are not lucky enough to acctually be on the list usunclaimed.com will tell you they found your name any way... because there is a Doe on the list, never mind the fact that the name on the list is Sharron doe and not John doe.
while searching each states listings can be time consuming and sometimes misleading ( they may not be compleatlly forthcoming... go figure. ) it is free and they will not tell you that there is something there in your name if there is not. generally i found that the state listings will say that there is nothing there for you unless you already know every detail about the claim already (California especially) or the person related to the claim is so old that it is more likelly that they are no longer alive...lose lose.
