United Circulation LLC Fraud

A young lady came to my door and said she lived with her grandparents on another street nearby. She said she was going to UC Irvine and studying journalism. She was going to go to London soon to study with the BBC. She said that to fund it she had to sell magazines. She said that the company would send a gift card for half the price of the magazine. She also said to thank neighbors who purchased magazines that she would come back and help out around their house for a day. She also said that if we didn't want or need any magazines that they would be sent to troops overseas. That this was a donation. She said that after her trip she would be back to show me pictures and that while she was in London she would send me a postcard. She had several checks and cash in a wallet. She was quite convincing. After I wrote her a check I decided to check on line about the company and found all the fraud complaints. She, of course had disappeared. I called my bank and put a stop payment on the check. My bank suggested changing my checking account to a new account. I will never trust a door to door salesperson again. I hope this alerts others to this scam.

Their website is http://unitedcirculation.net

IF you know how to read, it will say that Fun Travel Job is sister company.

Their phone number is [protected]. If you don't know, that is toll free. That means you can call it and it's a free call. Call them instead of complaining on the internet.

A young man Came to our door using the name Nate Wing he said he was our new neighbor from a few houses down and that he was selling magazine subscriptions to pay for a school trip to learn about broadcast journalism. I asked him what's your moms name and he said Tammy, my wife was in the other room and she overheard the conversation. My wife said I just met the neighbor yesterday and her name is Karen, he said oh thats my aunt we are living with her for awhile. He acted very strange the whole time. I agreed to buy a subscription from him for $42 which seemed like alot but it was for charity. He told me if I didn't want the magazine and just wanted to donate the money. He was sending the magazines to his brother over in Iraq who was a winner of the Purple Heart.

It took about 5 minutes after he left to realize that I was ripped off, I went up the street and asked Karen if she knew Nate Wing she said no I've never heard of him, and that she lived alone not with a sister.

I looked at the receipt and It said that the salesman is an independent contractor
and that the company is not affiliated with students, schools, fundraisers or charities.

This is one of the businesses that you see advertised on the side of the road "make $500/week"

after googling what happened to me I saw other people where scammed with the same script that was used on me

I found him later today and got my check back just as an old lady was writing him a check. I told him if you want to sell magazine subscriptions thats fine but don't tell me your my new neighbor, and that its a school fundraiser and your brother won the purple heart.

A nice young man came to my door selling magazines for a trip to Europe, said he was our narighbors son from the street behind us. He said that his dad told him to offer to wash cars, his mom said people need another magazine like they need another hole in their head. So his mom came up with the bright idea to have all buyers donate their magazine to a soldier in Iraq. Well that there just sold me, how could I say no to that. For some reason I had a weird feeling about this and searched the internet and saw these other posts and have now figured out that I've been had as well. I searched for a phone number to call United Circulation, I have tried and tried and NO ONE answers the number. Live and learn, I will not purchase anything at the door again!

Same thing happened to me today. A chipper young girl identifying herself as a homeschooled neighbor who lived around the block, told me that she was working on a project. I was thinking, 'Okay, like a scavenger hunt or something?' First fishy thing was that she gave just TOO much detail about everything so as to sound believable. The second fishy thing was that she had a few too many tattoos than I would expect a home-schooled highschooler to have. The third odd thing was that she gushed on a bit much about how much she liked "Weird Al" Yankovich after seeing my t-shirt of the same. I thought to myself, "Really? SERIOUSLY?"

She talked very quickly, which made it difficult for me to get in a word edgewise, but the magazine solicitation finally came out -- and it had a twist. Sure, lots of places try to do fundraisers by selling magazines we don't need, but HER project was different: you can donate your magazine purchases to military men and women overseas! She handed me a very WORN piece of paper that looked like it had seen just too many customers. Not even my old Girl Scout forms looked this worn after a season of selling cookies! The paper had on it the names of military personnel who were the anticipated recipients of my "tax decuctible" gift. Yes, tax deductible -- "UNLIKE those 'fraudulent solicitors.'" She even promised the receipt, and went over in detail all the info on the receipt. Had I had my phone handy, I would've called the 800 number right there in front of her, but I didn't have my phone handy, unfortunately.

I told "CiCi" that I thought it was a wonderful idea, but that I had been burned before w/mag subscriptions. I told her that I wanted to check it out first and I would get back to her -- after all, she gave such a good description of her 'residence around the block' that I could probably just check to see her car and go drop off a check. OR she could come back next week -- how is that so bad if you're a local kid? CiCI had all kinds of excuses, from "the company website is down" to she can't give out any personal information (she'd already identified her 'house.')

I remembered all the pertinent information from our conversation and googled it when I got in the house. That's when I found this website. I immediately called my neighbor, who had just finished talking to her at the door. She had just brushed her off by giving her a dollar (she'll take cash donations, too, for your convenience!) I then called the police, who had already rec'd a call from a neighbor about the same thing. NOTE: make sure you get a good description of the person for the police.

Young woman about 18 or 19 comes to my door at 1:30 pm in Ashland, MO. First says she's a neighbor (and points to the right) who goes to MU and is in a public speaking class. When I tell her that's a very dangerous thing to do because if she was a guy I'd have answered with a loaded gun in my hand, she laughs very nervously. She then shifts to another story altogether and tells me she's trying to earn points to go to a trip to London with the BBC and compliments me on knowing what that is. [False flattery] I then ask her where exactly she lives in the neighborhood and she hesitates, gives our street name and now points in the opposite direction she had given me the first time. [First noticeable lie.] I inform her of the discrepancy in her statement and she stammers that her mother lives in one direction and her grandmother in the other. My teenager asks her where she graduated from and she says she was home schooled. I ask her for some ID and she says she has none. [Second red flag] After more inane conversations, I take out my checkbook and ask how much and she says $49 but that half will be donated to the troops. I am told to make the check out to United Circulation and ask my daughter to check it out on her cell phone, which makes the girl visibly nervous. I then show her the results (that this is a scam, fraud, etc) and rip up the check and she almost starts to cry and leaves visibly terrified. I'm wondering if this doesn't involve some kind of psychological slavery.

Mofo guy took me for $56 dollars! He had a similar story. He said if i supported our troops i can help them out by sending a subscription to any branch that i would like. The Guy also said it helps him out by getting him closer to his goal that way he can win an award of $2000 dollars in Scholarships. I did not believe him at first, but he started talking to me and had a full on conversation with me so i decided to trust him. Good thing i only gave him cash, i knew better than to give a check. This happened in Rancho Cucamonga California. There have been tons of robberies happening in the area too, so i think it is best if i do not even answer the door anymore. Don't trust door to door sales people!

My situation was a bit different in that these two very nice college looking students (claimed to be going to University of Texas/Arlington Tx) were selling booksets for autistic and cancer patients at Children's Medical in Dallas. They even said that the Borders Books that had closed in our area were donating some of the books. They were really adorable young people and I was foolishly sucked in. Since I do all my banking electronically, I gave them CASH - they were indeed slick with their presentation, she also claimed to be the granddaughter of a doctor who lives in the next block. Better than that, she said her grandfather told them that if someone donated, they should ask if there was something they could do for us. . .blow leaves, etc. I've never been scammed before (fortunately) and this is a hard lesson learned. I am out $185 and these two weasels are out there preying on people, alot of whom do not have the money to spend but feel it is for a good cause. Had it been magazines for purchase, I'd have said no, but I thought I was truly helping these sick children and felt really good about it. I'm wondering if it would do any good to report it to the police. It's a real shame, to learn to be so dishonest at such a young age, but I believe in Karma. I'll never let it happen again to me.

This goes to Not Again Today and the rest of you misinformed posters-

I don't know why you had problems but the number on the receipt is not disconnected. I read your post and I decided to call them anyway thinking that you were honest with what you were saying. Yeah...you are not honest. First of all, it does not take 6 months to get a magazine. I got mine after two months. It was actually the wrong magazine(I wanted Snowboarder not Snowboarding...understandable mistake). I called the office after reading this "garbage" and I did talk to an office employee, I did get the magazine changed, and I received the correct magazine within two months. The person that came to my door was honest and told me they were just selling the magazine to make some extra money and maybe they could win an all expense paid vacation if they got the most points.

And to D Sgcruntled-

Are you OK? You seem awfully worked up over some door to door people. They are people just like you and me. Honestly, IMO, I think these people are doing better off then the low lives flipping burgers at your local fast food joint.

Five minutes ago I turned two "students" away from my house after a 15 minute talk. They said they lived in the neighborhood but the address they gave is not from around here. The other one did not say where she was from. Saving money to go to Le Cordon Bleu in Italy. No Le Cordon Bleu schools in Italy. One was born in Germany but stumbled on the name of her hometown. I live in Europe most of the year and speak fluent Spanish and German.

I explained that another "student" had come to the neighborhood just last summer and I bought magazines and sent some to troops. Never received magazines and called number and spoke to lady who's number was soon disconnected. She said it would gake 6 months to receive magazines. Same company, United Circulation LLC. Same phone number. I read all of this forum to these "students" while in my house. If this would have been legitimate, they would have asked me to call their supervisor, contractor or whatever while we were all here. Instead they wanted out immediately.

I received a message from United Circ accusing me of committing a crime by participating in this discussion about United Circulation LLC. The message claims the "crimes" of harassment and defamation.

There are 2 possibilities.
1. United Circ does not understand the laws of this great country.
2. United Circ understands the laws of this great country but is trying to intimidate me because they believe I don't understand the law.

To be clear, defamation is not criminal, it's civil. Defamation is nearly impossible to prove and free speech is covered in the Constitution. If there has been any defamation in this thread I believe it may have been United Rec's claim that the BBB charges for A+ ratings. Claiming McDonald's and Walmart have "F" ratings could also be considered defamation, if someone wanted to be technical. The truth is always the winner in a defamation case.

In terms of harassment, this message board and others like it, are here to discuss and reveal issues that have happened to people by certain businesses. You can't be threatened into silence due to revealing what happened to you or by providing publicly available information about a company.

I find it offensive that United Rec sent me a message to, what I believe, try and negatively influence my participation in this discussion.

United Circulation does not answer the phone or return calls from my personal experience.
You are attempting to blame "contractors" or the customers themselves for mistakes on orders.
In my personal experience, United Circulation LLC has terrible customer service and your posts serve to show your bad attitude towards customers. You blame customers for not being customers when they make a complaint, you accuse the BBB of being paid off for ratings... Everything but offer true customer service.
Hopefully the company will improve. This would include -
1. Permits for door to door selling.
2. Sales pitches that are not outright untrue.
3. Responding to customers via the phone number provided.
4. Not cashing any checks if the address or anything else is not 100% clear on the receipt.
5. If you are blaming your "contractors" for sales pitch falsehoods and incorrect information, hire better "contractors".

I'm going to end with this. If you purchased from united Circulation, and have any questions/concerns, you have our receipt with our company info on it, call us!

If you choose not to contact us, and instead to post your grievances on this website, unfortunately, we have no way of knowing who you are, or how to contact you.

Our company works with independent contractors, and do our best to make sure everyone is satisfied. We deal with a large volume of orders, so every now and then, there can be an issue. Contractors hand write in addresses for our customers, sometimes the customer does it themselves. Due to this, an incorrect address may be input to our system. But this does not happen often.

So, please, contact us and not "complaints board" prior to contacting us.

We do respond to anyone that has an issue. Like I stated, if someone makes a complaint on a third party site, and leaves fake info, how are we supposed to contact that person?

The BBB is a non-profit organization who charges businesses for A ratings. That is the only reason we do not have an A rating. Why else would a company with thousands of complaints have an A rating? When a customer makes a complaint to the BBB, and our company contacts the customer, sometimes the customer will not advise the BBB, therefore it is like we never responded in the first place. Your lack of knowledge of the issue is the problem here.

You didn't address your claim that both McDonald's and Walmart have "A+" ratings despite your claim that they didn't.
Speaking of never being able to contact, why didn't United Circulation LLC respond to the BBB? Is your company someone you can never contact?

Yes, you do not need to be an actual customer of a company to make a complaint about said company. You are a perfect example. A fake customer who goes online to post filth. Someone who hides behind fake information, and someone you can never contact to resolve the matter.

United Circulation LLC Magazine subscription fraud

A nice dressed young lady came to our door last evening selling magazine subscriptions to help fund her softball team's trip overseas. She'd already been to several of our neighbors and had quite a stack of checks in her envelope, so she was obviously convincing! She was very personable and very fast talking, and seemed to know people in the neighborhood, and said she lived on a nearby street. She told us that she only needed to sell two more subscriptions to meet her quota, and wanted us to buy two magazines for a total of $42. She said that most of the neighbors didn't actually want the magazines, and so they were going to be sent to her sister in Iraq. She said that because of this, she would be doing community service projects for the neighbors as a thank you.

I told her I would buy just one subscription, gave her a check, and she gave us a receipt for our "purchase." However, the receipt lacked information about where the magazine should be sent.

Afterwards I checked online and found numerous websites listing complaints about this so-called fundraising company, and most of the stories seem to follow the exact same script this young lady was using.

Wow. First of all I want to start off by saying that I totally felt like this kid that came to my door was taking advantage of me being stressed out. Looking back now, he really was just trying to be nice to me. I don't know if he was being nice so he could make a sale, but he was a sweetheart. He offered to help me bring in my groceries while I got the kids inside. I don't really know what I was thinking to let a random stranger into my house. I let him help me and I listened to his spiel. He said that he had to earn so many points and he could win an all expense paid vacation to where ever he wanted to go. He said he wanted to go to Hawaii. He also said there were at least 200 other people doing the same contest so he had to get the most points or someone else would win. HE told me that he makes commission off of each sale to help pay for traveling expenses like hotels, gas, and food. I was a little skeptical at first and I though maybe he would just rip me off but I placed an order for Boys Life magazines. Two years for $48. The prices are jacked up obviously. I asked him about it and he said its because they have to make make money to afford traveling and the company needs to make money so they can give out the prizes to the agents. I guess the trip is the grand prize. They can also win cash, TV's, phones, computers...

The only thing I am really disappointed about is that he lied to me about where he lived. He said he was one of my neighbors grand kids and that he was staying with them. I would have still bought from him if he said he lived in Alabama. At first I wanted to cancel the order. I called the office number on the receipt and a lady answered the phone. She told me that they are in a contest and basically verified everything he had told me. I asked her why he lied about where he lived and she said that the sales people often fell like they won't make any sales if they say where they are really from. She also offered to cancel my order for me since he had lied. I told her no because everything she told me was the same thing he told me except for the whole residency thing.

I am receiving my magazine. I do not feel like I was ripped off. I am glad I helped this kid earn some points. If it cost $48 dollars to have a nice conversation with a stranger, then the magazine was a bonus. I will definitely help someone from this company again.

For those of you that only use the internet to make bad reviews, do yourself a favor and call these people or send them an email. They even have a website that you can get more information on them.

I stopped payment on my check the minute the young ladies left and I had a chance to verify the ligitimacy of the company online. Obviously a scam. Who knows if the kids doing the selling know that nothing is ever actually delivered for the money. They may think they're actually selling magazines. I wanna believe that...

I know people that work for this company and they send me free magazines all the time. I'm so sick of getting these magazines. I've asked them to stop, but they keep sending me magazines. See, the business part of this company is legit, but their sales tactics are questionable.

Now we all know there are hundreds of people that go door to door selling magazines. It's very easy to tell which ones are legit and which ones aren't. If a kid knocks on your door and he looks like he is cracked out, then yeah, don't buy a magazine from him. If a decent looking person(yes I say person because magazine sales people are real people) comes knocking at your door with whatever spiel then you know that their canvas is BS. BUT that doesn't mean that they are going to rip you off. Call them out on their BS and if they admit to it and don't have an attitude about it, then help them out. They obviously would appreciate your check for a magazine subscription way more then if they had lie to get it.

Also, to avoid not receiving your magazine, make sure you fill out the address yourself on the receipts. Make sure you fill it out in all upper case print and make sure there is no possible way that your address can be misread. When addresses are filled out incorrectly you won't be able to get a magazine.

Keep in mind, these people are people just like you and me. Have you ever had to tell a white lie to get something you wanted or accomplish something? They are working a job, not living on the streets or collecting welfare.

"Dave",
You don't need to search for anything but United Circulation LLC to find all the complaints. The words fraud and/or scam come up on every link.
It's doubtful you ordered new subscriptions for the last 2 years unless a random sales team showed up at your residence 2 years in a row. There doesn't appear to be any other way to order from United Circulation LLC .

HAHAHA WOW all of you [censored]es trusted people you dont know and gave them money.. nd then you want to complain about it? First of all you shouldn't trust anyone! Specially someone you don't know and have never met. If you want to help on a fundraiser at your door, ask for ID to confirm they live where they "SAY" they live, and tell them to come back tomorrow. Chances are they will either get the help they need or they'll come back with anything you ask to see, even an ID, why wouldn't they! I can't believe I gotta write this response and be all of your daddy's n [censor]! It's common sense.. there are a lot of bad people out there and life is about features now days witch cost money. I got taken too. I signed up because he was a student and going to intern with the BBC, yadda yadda yadda... It wasn't until he left that evening that I noted that he signed me up for a 2 year subscription for each magazine! $126.00 worth! So, I wrote the company the very next day, June 29, 2010 not to cash the check. I followed the directions on the slip, the order slip, that is. They still cashed the check! [censor]! As long as it was postmarked within 3 days of the date of the slip. Okay, it was postmarked the 29th of June and the slip was also dated the 29th of June. It was within 3 days. Considering I paid for the magazines on the evening of the 28th of June. So how come the company still cashed the check? That's what I want to know. Since I explicitly told them not to. I do work for a lawyer and will be seeking his counsel as to what I can do about this. I work hard for my money as I know the rest of you do. What a joke!
