TWX*Magazine Misrepresentation of fees

This is the "Free Magazine" scam. I hesitate to call it a scam because what they do is legal. Their methods rely on the small print and the consumer's inattention to deal details. It may even be buried in your credit card application. Essentially, you agree to 3-6 months of magazines for free, after that they have permission to use your credit card or debit card number to charge you for a years subscription. You may not even know you've been hit because the charge may not show up for four to six months. Once hooked, they make it very difficult to contact them and cancel the order. It usually appears on your credit card as "TWX*?, where the question marks are some kind of code. Sometimes there will be a phone contact, but good luck with that. I found on this forum that you can go to this website to cancel the account:
https://www.magcustomerservice.com/wss/050983/home.do#top
Be persistent. They make you guess which magazines you have and really put you through the ringer as you may have multiple magazines split between different subscription IDs. I was successful with the first magazine, but the other two were on a different order. I had to use another browser to start clean and find the other order. They put a cookie on your browser that locks your inquiries into one order. If you start clean you can look for the new magazine. There may be several on one order ID. If so, they will let you cancel each in turn without too much hassle. They will give you a cancellation number which I suggest you print out. Give it a go.

I was charged twice for $27.00 on my debit card. When I called on this, they show it was for a magazine Vermin. They did agree to take it off and cancel my subscription, but they only showed one charge. I reported this to Bank of America and the other $27.00 was taken off. I alerted my bank as to this transaction, but am still not sure how they got my debit card number and my address.

I ordered several magazines some time ago and understood it was 6 months free trial for a small amount.
Now they are billing my card number to renew them.
I did not authorize this.
Please help me get this resolved.

In my opinion TWX Magazine is a crooked outfit. They automatically renewed my subscriptions at ridiculous rates. The initial "deal" was to get up to four magazines for a year at two dollars per magazine per year. I called the numbers listed on my credit card statement, and they said they couldn't give me the full refunds. They're still trying to keep some of the money. I'll never use them again. By the way, my credit card company knows all about their shady practices.

I just called my credit card account to dispute charges. I was charged over $30 for 3 magazines, and we found out that there was one more when we called TWX. My credit card agent 3 way called them, and they agreed to refund all charges and cancel all magazine subscriptions. Seems like credit card is the quickest way to resolve this issue.

I just checked my bank statement to find 3 charges from TWX*Magazine, they are attempting to resubscribe my offer from last year. I did not approve this and have already begun fraudulent charge procedures against them. Be sure to check your statments. I did one year for 2.01 and now they're trying to charge again.

TWX is really slick when it comes to this. I have ordered magazines from them before and when your subscription is almost due, they will send you a postcard that says that they will automatically assume you wish to renew unless you call them to cancel. Watch out when ordering from them because they won't bother sending out proper renewal invitations

TWX*Magazine Fraud Charges

TWX*MAGAZINE charges of 46.00 were discovered as a pending transaction on my Debit Visa card! I DID NOT authorize these charges in no way! I called my credit union and got a contact phone number, contacted TWX*MAGAZINE and after a long wait, got a human on the phone, they didn't have any info. on my charges, asked my name, address AND Visa card number!?!?! What the heck?! I decided to give them my number, he found me and said it was charged due to a magazine offer after a survey was submited, witch I never did. he said it was for Time Magazine, 1 yr. sub. ...he said sorry, I will cancel the order and your visa card will be refuned in 1 - 3 statements. fine. we will see. I then called my credit union to cancel my Visa Card ASAP. What a pain. ...Just wanted to share my experence with you all that have fallen into the same trap by TWX*MAGAZINE. I wish somehow they would be put out of buisness, this is fraud and a crime! Thanks for your time and comments. Joe - Los Angeles, CA. - 02/18/10.

TWX*Magazine Fradulent Charges

I was charged, on my visa card, 4 times on 1/23/09. Charges were $24.00, $18.00, $29.00, $22.00. I tried calling the company at the number I found from the complaints board. I was taken through an automated process that asked me if I wanted to cancel (something I didn't request) I said yes, then it stated that 15 months of magazine would be sent to me and if I didn't cancel at that time charges would be made to my account. At that point I got on the phone with my bank and had to cancel my credit card and file fraud on the account.

I am baffled that there are so many complaints regarding this company yet they continue to operate as a business. My next step will be to file fraud charges with my local police department. Now whether this will be acted on or not we will soon see. Also, I plan to speak with an attorney to see if there is anything else I can do. These people need to be held responsible for stealing credit cards numbers and charging accounts for their magazines.

If you call the 800 number and press "0" while in the automated machine, you can reach an operator (the machine will try to dissuade you by saying "you may have to wait a long time" and "we can finish this quickly now, if you choose" and then offering three different automated survey's, but if you continue to press "no" you can reach a real person). They were able to cancel the subscription for which I never applied. Sorry to say, I don't know how to get a refund...

This company did the same thing to me. But little did they know i have a familymember that works at my bank my account is located at . For all you people trying to get rid of these charges this is what you do . Take their(TMX MAGIZENE) merchant id number that is located on your banking statement with the TMX charge, and you can have your banking personal block this merchant from charging your account forever ! Most banks and financial instutions will do this free of charge in compliance with their identity theft procedures regulated by the fedrel government.

BEWARE the machine will try to offer you deals that SOUND like they are cancelling/refunding but they really are not. Just keep saying "NO" to all the offers and they will finally get to refunding and cancelling the subscription.

I was recently charged a second time from this company, which I never thoroughly investigated what the charge was from the first time, but this time I called the number that was attached with the charge to my account. Long story short it turned out to be a promotional offer from BAM (Books A Million) when I purchased books a few months back and I had the opportunity to choose up to 3 free subscriptions on the current magazine collection offered. So instead of the company, which in my case is National Geographic, getting in touch with me to see if I would want to extend my once free subscription pay, they go ahead and just start charging my card with no authorization from me. In the store (BAM) I was told I would get 6 free issues and if I wanted I could go on the highlighted website to continue my subscription, which I never did...not very happy that companies can get access to your account so easily.

Very difficult to get information to cancel - my bank worked with me to reverse the charges. The bank was able to tell me they even kept trying to bill a new debt card by continuously GUESSING the exp. date! How they even got the new card number i dont know...but avoid this company!

TWX Magazine took funds from my VISA account on 11/28 and 11/29/2008 as a result of my answering a survey a year ago in 2007. The automated number listed on my Wells Fargo VISA bill does not allow a cancellation or at least the rotation of options is so limited it is impossible to cancel the subscription. BEWARE of this Company and do not respond to any online surveys...a lesson learned. Wells Fargo is now checking into one of these charges.

Two unauthorized withdrawals appeared on my bank statement - making my account overdrawn. I'm 86 years old, living on social Security, and this scam is absolutely ridiculous. I had a charge of $2.01 on a magazine which we purchased as a Christmas gift in 2007. After calling the toll free # I was told this was a "Test" charge to see if the accountt was still open.
Requested a reversal of the charge and cancellation of any magazines. The reversal went through within the 24 hour time frame. Thanks El Deg.

I got 2 offers for different subscriptions for $8 each, and I took them - I have yet to receive the magazine but I did get another letter processing one of the subscriptions. As long as I get the magazines I have no problem with those 2 payments of $8.00 but I also saw the $2.01 coming out of my account as well. I called the number provided above and they said that it was a test payment and would come back in within 24 hours. It did NOT, so I called again and the person who answered this time said that it WAS supposed to come back in... she sounded like she didn't much care either way. She said she couldn't give me a refund herself but she could file a customer service complaint.. so I guess we'll see what happens. But thanks for posting the number, and also for warning me that I may be getting more than I bargained for with this bargain! I'll keep my eyes out after the year subscription is over...

Thank you so much for posting this information. I had no problems getting them to cancel my subscriptions after noticing an unauthorized charge of $2.01 on my statement. Luckily I caught this transaction while it was still processing.

It really is unfair that companies are allowed to do this. I am a college student and thought I was going to be able to view free issues of my favorite magazines but nothing in life is free. This company got my information when I processed an order on www.delias.com. There is an option to ask for free issues.

If you see any of these charges, I recommend calling ASAP. The operator on the phone will try to talk you into keeping the "free issues" but if you just say "NO THANK YOU" he/she will not continue. Thanks again for the information.

I have experienced the same problem. Nowhere is there a total that you know you are paying for. I was told this was free because of a purchase I made on an app for my iphone. Even if the charges were on the agreement somewhere, I still think you should not have to go looking for them. When someone says FREE, it ought to be free. I don't have things like this happen to me very often, but this really angered me. If I got scammed, then I am sure many more people out there have been scammed this way as well. I'm usually pretty good about reading the fine print, but I admit I didn't read every word of the terms. I will be much more careful from now on.

Find him and personally let him know how his little scheme has worked for you. These are the fat cats that are causing this country to be known as a den of thieves and crooks. call the number and let them have it. I checked my account today and had $70 of charges on my account from a $1 'subscription' I did a year ago at an old address that I had completely forgotten about. After googling I came across this wall which was SO helpful! I called the number given above [protected]) pressed 0 (zero) to get an operator, didn't have to hold at all and was able to cancel my subscription and get a refund. They did their very best to keep me (free gas vouchers, mugs, extended subscription at no cost etc) but I wasn't interested. Just be polite, persevere and they'll give you your money back.

I too was charged for something I didnt authorize. Over Christmas I'd bought a book from Books-A- MIllion. They had free magazine subscription offers at the time. If you signed up for that, you signed up for a subscription to the magazine of your choosing. We recieved 1 magazine, if you can even call it that. Free period was 60 days and then they start debiting you card. Read the fine print...I obviously didnt read it well enough. Called company, expained situation, they told us they will cancel subscription and will have refunded our account by 1 - 2 billing cycles...We'll see.

So I called the number FYE gave me, and with in three minutes I was off the phone, and they refunded my money and cancelled the subscriptions. Look Guys everyone signs up for this offer. They dont charge you without your permission. When you sign up for the "free" offer it is free until after like 4-5 issues. Then they send you a very plain mailer that asks if you want to cancel or not. I thought it was junk the first time i got it and never bothered reading it. This is very easy to fix. just call their 1877 number press 0 until you get an operator then just ask them to cancel and refund you. They will do it without any questions or arguing. Its very easy. So geez people stop complaining, call them, and be nice. They will refund it and you will be home free. In the future just don't sign up for free magazines.

Well, so I canceled 2 out of 3 subscriptions and I though it went through o.k. as I did not receive them in a couple months. And still I got charged for them …

I don’t get it. I talked to Ben Smith and told I will receive a refund for those two magazines. He told me I never canceled ? Well than why haven't I received them since this summer. I hope the return will be sooner rather than later, because they cause my account to overdraft and I am tired of paying all kind of fees out of my pocket.

So when you call TWX yelling at them because you said no, when you probably said yes, just know that whoever offered you the subscription pushed it through, NOT THIS COMPANY. So stop yelling at the person on the other end of the phone who is there to help you. Go back and yell at the person or place that offered it to you.
