I lived in these old apartments for a couple years after moving back to Satellite Beach, Florida. I made the mistake of moving during the winter and all the nicer apartments in town were full with "snow birds". I lived here for nearly two years and dreaded shelling out over $800 a month for such a "rat hole". I can call it that because I trapped two rats in my apartment while I was there. Until I threatened to vacate the apartment, they made no attempts to cure the problem (by spraying foam sealant under the washing machine. )The units had common hallways and whenever someone walked down the hall smoking, the smoke came into MY unit (the "fresh air" comes from the HALLWAYS!). After I filed a complaint with the State of Florida for a Clean Air violation they installed a new air handler in the interior of my apartment.
The quality of tenants kept getting poorer and poorer, with more dogs and trash, and more dog crap in my yard! I finally had the opportunity to buy a house and closed before the end of my lease. I moved out one month before the end of my second lease period, paying the full month's rent in advance and cleaning the entire apartment including patching and painting. I had a walk-through with the manager and everything was checked off. She said that I should receive my entire deposit back within the 15 days (as required by law). It is also Florida law that the apartments must make an attempt to re-lease my unit and refund a portion of the rent if the apartments were not "damaged" from loss of rent.
It has now been nearly TWO MONTHS-I have filed a complaint with the Florida Department of Professional Regulation, Real Estate Division. I drove by the unit two weeks ago and was blown away that not only had it not been rented but they were using it for STORAGE-as there was set of commercial dryers sitting in the dining area! I'd suggest, if you haven't received your deposit from these people, to do the same and file a small claim suit if you are not satisfied-as I am prepared to do.
