TCF Bank held check indefinitely for no reason

I opend a checking account two weeks ago. The teller said I had to use my legal name Sharon. I work under the nickname Sherry and told her that. She said, "No problem, that is the common nickname. We take checks for William if it is made out to Bill." The opening deposit was made out to Sherry and they took it. A week later I made another deposit with a cashiers check made out to "Sherry." It had my home address on the front of check and my signature matched. BUT they sent the check to the "Fraud Department!" Even though I came in with business cards and photos of me with the name "Sherry" they continue to hold the check! There is no one who can make a decision, and no one from the MN office of "customer service" who can make a decision. They keep telling me they are "working on rectifying and continuing to investigate." There is no one who can tell me how long this will take or when my money will be available! I have made numerous calls to the home office and been into the bank six times to no avail. Every time I'm in line I hear other tales of how badly this bank operates. PUT YOUR MONEY IN TCF AT YOUR OWN RISK! Oh, did I mention I rude they've been or that they told me "Sherry" is not a legal name?

i am a former tcf employee. here is my advice. ask to speak with the regional manager of the branch where you opened the account. and say you want her phone number immediately! leave her a message explaining the entire situation and give names of employees if you know them. say that you know the legal limit for with holding a check is 11 business days and if action isnt taken soon(before that time period) you will have your attorney contact the regional manager. This will put a fire under the situation and if you repeatedly talk about the terrible customer service and how you will tell everyone you know about your experience you will get your money and then some. :) best of luck

It's like I wrote this myself. My wife and I have shelled out over $400 in these "fees" and are now closing the account. Through shell games and impossibly complex accounting practices, they are managing to make a business of Fees rather than honest services. Maybe we should all be filing a class action?

Yep. I've read about their customer-screwing overdraft policy on this site and now I see how it has happened to me. A few days ago, I get $70 in NSF fees. Oddly enough, I get these fees the same day I deposited my paycheck. So tonight I got home and opened the mail to find the $20 cash withdrawal I made when I deposited my check in the list of transactions that my wife and I made the day our account went under. In other words, I deposited my money BEFORE the transactions that caused my account go "under" went through! Reading this page, I see I am far from alone in falling victim to these hideous practices. I am not joking when I say that I am strongly considering cashing all my checks from now on and keeping the money in a drawer. With the $700B (and counting) bailout and the aftermath, in which banking industry abuse of customers is at its all-time high, I can't justify giving another penny to these pigs.

The best part, in this letter I got, they have the audacity to say these transactions were "honored as a courtesy" by TCF.

I just want to do my part to alert everyone that TCF bank is currently involved in a class-action lawsuit, so if you think that you have a legitimate complaint log onto lieffcabraser.com. I can't wait to find out the total of the reparations. I shall have a little party. God Bless America

TCF has destroyed my charity United Against Poverty..the branch manager placed a hold on account as I was to receive a large deposit and he yelled at me said I was fraudulent and there was no documentation from the fraud department, we had a camping outing 2 hours from the cities and due to them TCF without warning locked atm we drove to find out what was going on and of course Mgr was gone for the memorial weekend I had to buy gift cards with funds I had in another bank and I have no access to our account they have lied to us charged us for an account were not able to access and get this how do you close an account when the social security number doesn't match? here's one better when my co-worker accompanied me to tcf I asked the teller if she wanted my EIN she stated no we don't need it but when I thought I'd attempt to order gift cards for our local school districts and at the end of the order gave me a confirmation number and it said paid in full and 2 days later letter stated my TIN does not match...I have an EIN and they said they didn't need.

Tcf just charged me 2 NSF for the same transaction! One fee for when it was taken out and "pending" one fee for when it was "posted" how is this legal? How are they still in business? If an individual scams and steals from people, they would be in prison. What makes a company and its employee's so different?

Money unfortunately. The rich steal from the poor and the rich get richer doing it and we get poorer.
So sad...i don't understand how any of this is legal or any court would even listen to this bank after all of the proof. I hope they shut this bank down but not before they make them pay all of us who they stold from.

Who do we contact to get in on the class action suit? I have had no success in finding it. The only firm I found, I emailed about 6 months ago and had no response, instead I get nothing but spam email from them about credit ratings. coloradoxgirl@gmail.com.

My husband and agree, they are making money like crazy off of us. I check my account everyday, know how much money is there and I know I have funds to cover my charges. When we use our card it comes out immediately, they call it pending, then they 'repost' and seems like they charge you twice for the same charge and then charge me nsf fees, it is really annoying. I don't think it should be legal what this bank is doing to the customers, and the supervisors are so rude i just want to jump through the phone and rip their eyes out!

I completely agree. This new system they have in place debits the largest amount out of your account in hopes to put your account negative. They also process debits against your account before deposits. It's bad business and theyre about to pay big for it.

I have money in my checking account to cover five charges that posted on 11/2. One pending charge on 11/2 bounced all of the posted charges. The pending charge posted on 11/4 which I had paycheck deposit to cover. Five NSF for a one charge that was pending. I called the bank, they said they began this new system in 4/09. They're raking in the bucks. Ridiculous.

TCF Bank $50 free with new account scam

I was approached by a TCF employee while shopping in a Jewel store about receiving a 50 dollar Jewel gift card for opening a FREE account. After meeting with the branch manager and this employee, the manager told me that I would have to give a minimum of 25 dollars to open the account and I'd have to purchase checks that would total around 17 dollars. So I said to him, "the value of the 50 dollars just went down to 33 dollars". But okay, during these hard times who couldn't use an extra 33 dollars in groceries. They told me that my account was totally free with no montly charges. That was a LIE. You don't get 50 dollars free and clear. That was a LIE. After getting home and really reading the information, I called the 1-800 number and spoke to a rude customer service rep. I asked her if I could close the account at no penalty to me, because I had already received the checks and assumed they took it out of my account. She said nastily, "you can close it anytime you like". "Is there anything else". I said "no" and hung up. I go to the branch to close the account and the same manager that opened the account told me I could not close it because the checks had not been paid for. I told him that I had the checks for a week and don't understand why they haven't taken the money yet. He played the nut role and pretended to change my account over the totally FREE checking account that should have been in place originally. I see now why they have you sign a waiver agreeing not to sue them, but to mediate to resolve the problem. Is any of this legal? I think all of our money is safer under the mattress. I can't believe that this bank thinks they can con, scam and rip people off with no penalty. Where's the Attorney General when you need them. This bank should fail and at no cost to taxpayers. If this is what they call getting ahead of the competition, they can forget it. With these antics, they'll be lucky to be able to afford a glass of water. I'm going to make an assumption here. The fifty dollar gift card must be less valuable than the 25 cash dollars they take when you open the account. By the way, this story gets better. I used one of their atm's to get the 25 dollars and paid a 2 dollar fee which they said they would reverse. Needless to say, that was a LIE. The bottom line is learn from those who have suffered needless aggravation and possibly a loss of funds. Don't do it. If you read this first and still decide to go, just remember that you read their script here first.

TCF is one of the banks that always is giving you the screw job. Their "gift cards" they put out also have "terms and conditions" stating that a $5 maintenance fee will be deducted every month after the 6 month. They should hope you never use the money so they can cotinue to collect the interest but instead, they say, "If you don't use it quickly, we'll just keep it." There are too many banks playing fairly now to have to deal with TCF's ripoffs. See you on the watch list TCF! Enjoy.

TCF Bank is smart to give the so called free $50 to new members. 1. Charge you $17 for checks. 2.Know most first time check writers will bounce a check thus charging $ 35. 3.Run same check again to get another $35. 4. Now they come up with a maintenance fee $10 if you don't maintain a balance of $500. 5. charge for using ATM $2...quick math. 17+35+35+10+2=99. They profit $49.Do this 1 million times you make $49, 000, 000 and pay for naming a stadium after them.Very smart of them, now of course if I pulled this scam it would be prison time for me.

Worse still, this "$50 gift" is no gift at all. It is reported to the IRS as INTEREST INCOME on which you must pay TAXES!

I believe that this is fraudulent, and intend to send letters to both TCF and the federal banking regulators to ensure that this scam is stopped.

TCF Bank free $50 when a checking account is opened

I was excited to hear about the free $50 from tcf bank when you open a free checking account. All over the website it states "$50 free, YES FREE!" so I though there would be no problems. Well, I opened the account online and the website said I would receice my $50 when my account was funded, so naturally I know it would take a few days for the money to go through from my debit card. So a few days after the funding took place I did not get my money so I decided to call the 1800 number. When I called I was told I need to go to a TCF branch to present proper verification (I.D., s.s. card, ect., ). I went to the branch (on a saturday) and showed them what they needed and the teller told me I would receive my $50 on Monday. When monday rolled around I did not get my money but decided to wait a few days. Also I received a box of checks that I was told were FREE, yet they proceeded to charge my account $18.50 AND did not put my $50 in the account. At this point I was very frustrated and decided to call the 1800 number again. When I called I talked to a man who was very rude and he told me there was nothing he could do for me. Then about 10 minutes later I called again and talked to a woman who was able to reverse the check printing fee and told me I would have to wait four weeks from the date I opened my account to receive the $50. A few days ago made FIVE weeks since the date I opened my account and I called so I called the 1800 number and asked why I did not have my money and a SUPERVISOR told me that I qualified for the $50 and she would file a credit to my account and the money would be in my account in 1-3 days...Well, today made six days so I called again and spoke to a rude woman who told me I do not qualify for the $50 because I did not purchse the checks that were sent to me (the fee was reversed). I ended up hanging up on her because she was being so rude to me. I am absolutely fed up with this bank and they have been giving me the run-around for over a month now. NEVER OPEN A TCF ACCOUNT!

WHEN YOU OPEN AN ACCOUNT ONLINE AND YOU READ THE TERMS THERE IS NOWHERE THAT SAYS THAT CHECKS ARE FREE.. IT DOES TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO BUY THE CHECKS AND IT ALSO GIVES YOU THE FEE AMOUNT THAT YOUR CHECKS WILL COST. ALSO IF YOU READ BEFORE YOU OPENED THE PAGE TO OPEN THE ACCOUNT IT SAYS THAT THE CREDIT FOR THE $50 WILL BE MADE WITHIN 4 WEEKS..AS LONG AS THE REQUIREMENTS ARE MEET...YOU SHOULD HAVE READ THE TERMS

After I opened my Free TCF checking account, is was switched to an account with a monthly service charge on my very first statement! This felt very much like a bait and switch move on their part. When I opened the account, I told them I didn't want to have direct deposit nor keep a minimum balance. Within a couple weeks, they completely changed the rules. I withdrew my money and returned it to Wells Fargo.
I was told by the TCF teller that the rate increase was "due to the government". Nice move TCF - will never do business with you again.

TCF Bank funds availability, overdrafts and fees

In their promotional material, TCF says "Tell your friends about the confidence you have in us." So, I will.

On Sept. 28 I opened an account at the TCF branch in my local Jewel. I wanted a separate account for my business travel expenses and the location was convenient. Opened the account with a $1500 expense check I'd received from my local employer (drawn on a local bank). On October 7 (9 days after opening account: 7 business days) I do an electronic funds transfer for $1200to pay my Amex bill -- and TCF bounces it and charges me $35!

I got nothing but blank stares at my local branch and nobody had a reasonable explanation other than "sometimes it takes longer for new account deposits to clear". Well, that's not my opinion of how you treat a new customer -- and it's probably a preview of more surprises to come -- so I closed my account.

As they suggested, I will gladly "tell me friends" that they should never do business with TCF Bank!

I would have to agree that this bank has to be the worst bank i have ever worked with. I'm active duty military and back in September my wife and I lost our second child 11 hours after he was born. The military has a $10, 000 insurance policy on all children under 18 for active duty military. So when all the paper work was completed i received the benefits on 1 Dec 2009, i wrote a check for $3500.00 to be deposited into this account on the 6th, 2 days later the check posted to the account my benefits went to, but at TCF they placed it on hold and still stated t hey have problems varifying the deposit. But the other checks i worte have been posted and paid, this bank needs to be shut down never to open the doors again. I'm surprised the federal or state governments have not done an investigation on them because there are some shady deals going on with this bank.

TCF Bank hold on cash deposit

I recently deposited $800 CASH (this is key) into my local TCF banks ATM (also key). The transaction occured on a tuesday afternoon at 3pm. On Wednesday I made a purchase and also had a cell phone bill automatically deducted from my account. When I went to an ATM the same day to withdraw $20 dollars I owed a friend, I was told I had insufficient funds. The purchase earlier in the day and the cell phone bill amounted to less than $100. I went inside the branch to see what the problem was. I was told I missed the Tuesday cut-off for deposits of 2pm. "Is that the only time you make deposits?" I asked. "No, we also make them at 8am when we open for business." OK? So why was the cash deposit not cleared then? Apparently buried in the fine print of TCF's checking account agreement is a note that treats all cash deposits made at an ATM like a check, requiring a two day hold period. My $800 CASH deposit made on Tuesday was not made available until Thursday and in the mean time I was charged $70 ($35 per occurance) for the transactions made on Wednesday. YES, THERE WAS A 2-DAY HOLD PUT ON MY CASH DEPOSIT THAT COST ME $70. Needless to say, after all funds cleared, I closed my TCF checking account and took my business elsewhere.

I had an issue yesterday where I deposited my Payroll Check at the ATM, and found there was to be a hold placed. No problem there, but I knew that I was going to have to make a payment with my debit card at noon and wanted to make sure it didn't bounce. So, at 11:15 a.m., I went in to the bank and deposited $600.00 CASH with the teller (3x what was supposed to be charged, just to be on the safe side). When I went at 4:30 p.m. to make another charge to a tailor, my card was declined as insufficient funds! I called TCF where they proceeded to tell me that because I had deposited a check in the ATM and had a hold, that they placed a HOLD on my CASH deposit with the teller as well. WHY? I didn't deposit the cash in the ATM, but with a live person who counted it out. I also got a receipt showing me to have a POSITIVE balance. The supervisor on the phone would NOT take the hold off the cash so that I could finish paying for my tailoring, and now I have to go back at a later date. I will most DEFINITELY be closing my account and going somewhere else. And I am a new customer! THIS IS CRAZY! Treating CASH deposited with a TELLER as a check! SMH!

Cash deposits need to be made with tellers. Oct 8th response is exactly correct - no ATM deposits are available same or next day for the exact reason given - people can lie and say the put in $1000 dollars via ATM, but until the funds are verified by the bank, they are not available for use. SImple common sense. Not the bank's fault customer is stupid.

The reason why we hold your cash deposit is because Ive opened ATM envelopes in the morning when I run the deposits and some of them are short huge amounts of cash or empty. Thats why you should always use the tellers. All ATM deposits are next day availibility!

TCF Bank nsf

TCF has been misreporting on my online account.
Charging me for Pending transactions, then again after they post.
They sem to let my items pend and subtract the amount from my account so i no howmuch i have left and thats fine but when i go back to check after they post theres a NSF fee.
This a Ripoff Cause when i buy the item the funds are in my account.
I have started watch my account allthe time but im scared to look at it cause there could bae another NSF FEE for a 1 $35 for a pending $1 door fee or a online banking fee or a none atm fee.
I dont have the money to pay these people $35 all the time as it has added up to around $ 1000 since ive opened this account a year ago.
Ive go some of my money back due to there errors but this is crazy.
Feds bailed out the banks what a joke.

TCF Bank they love taking your money

TCF loves to take your money! I have many many stories I can tell about this bank like for instance how we went to an ATM to withdraw money for rent and the ATM jammed and only gave us $60 and rent was due that day! We called the bank and said we need this money now to pay our rent or else were going to have a butt load of fees from our apartments for being late. They wouldn't help us at all and told us it could be 3 months before we get our money back! We asked since it was a TCF atm error if we could just take the money out to pay rent and them not charge us NSF fees since it was their fault and they refused! Thankfully our apartments worked with us and took off the late fees. Our biggest problem is they re arrange all the transactions so that if you do go over once they instead of charging you for the most recent one charge they re arrange all of them so you get charged for as many as they can get. We had a check go through that wasn't supposed to go through till the next day and should've only been charged for one fee they re arranged transactions that were made 5 days before so we got charged for three! This bank is so ridiculous they just love screwing people over and taking as much money as they can. This is the worst bank we have have been through, it's horrible how they treat their customers.

I've had the same experience with TCF. I thought it was just my bad math. But it appears it's a bigger, out of my control issue. I had money to cover transactions, had one that put it over quite a bit over, but I made a deposit later that day, because I thought it'd prevent overdrafts. What they did was put that big transaction ahead of the other smaller transactions that would have cleared so that none of the transactions cleared! I hate banking with TCF. I also had the same experience where I opened a saving account with the understanding that it would be used in case of overdraft. Guess what, although I had money in my savings to cover transactions, I incurred overdrafts and was later told that they don't do automatic transfer. How convenient and profitable for them.

Does anyone know if, I, as a customer could have my account audited by a private auditor? I'd like to find out the true nature of this bank. I have a feeling that I might actually be ahead financially instead of always in the hole according to their banking practices.

Beware. TCFbank practices LAG balance to make money from their customers accounts.
Deposit 50. Go spend 30 at walmart. 10 Gas. 10 at KFC. Their system will hold back KFC & GAS because it's considered minor charges and incredibly people tend to overlook those charges more often than the big store charges. The Gas & KFC stays in limbo for days or a week. Your balance however magically stays the same and thye allow for charges that went over the KFC & GAS charges. They basically will not calculate from those minor charges and will do this days or weeks hoping you forget about them and spend based on what you see according to the online balance. At a certain time when you finally hit a perfect OD amount they recalculate and actually do an a rework of your balances and amounts as well as charge dates. I have caught them wrongly calculating the charge dates on nearly most of my GAS & minor charges. So BAM $35 KFC, BAM $35 Gas, Bam $35 Wow, & so on down the list of minor charges that were in limbo awaiting the account re-balancing.

It's a good idea to leave TCF, go to wells fargo or somewhere else where you get real up to date spending and balancing for all your financial transactions. The downside of the other banks is that they are not free unless you are a student or part of some non profit agency. I am with them now and everything is calculated including the PENDINGS so you can't OD. It takes effort to OD at WellsFargo and once you OD you hardly want to battle it out cause you knew. Very nice.

TCF can go to hell.

I just had the same thing happen to me. I went online because I knew I may OD, saw that I was because of PENDING transactions in the amount of about $17. Since it had previously been explained to me that PENDING transactions were not held against available funds, I transferred in $600 from savings, thinking I'd be safe. Low and behold, 2 days later I get 4 NSF fees totaling $140. WTF? I called them to straighten it out and was told I needed to be better at keeping track of my funds. On top of that, they charged me $5 for mail they sent me that the post office returned. I had nothing to do with that, why was I charged $5? What happened to the policy of TCF, the no hidden fee bank? I was able to get half of my money back on the phone, will try for the other half tomorrow at a branch, then will transfer my sizable savings account somewhere else Monday. I'm done with this ###. Credit Union, here I come.

TCF = SUCK ### RIP OFF!

They changed their pollicy on 4/1/09. Now pending trans actions are held against your account and make the funds "unavailable". I ran this scenerio through with the bank manager, and she agreed, but seemed like she didn't care one bit.

-You deposit $20 in your account. Go spend $4 at starbucks on a cup of coffee. Then go put $1 in gas in your car, BUT the terminal at the gas station authorizes you for $20 (as most all of them do). When that $4 hits your account, the $20 "authorization" is "pending" and therefore the money is "unavailable" BAM $35 FEE! So you deposite $20, spend $5 and somehow are magically hit with a $35 dollar fee.

Funny that at the exact same time they changed this, they changed another pollicy, the amount that they will continue to authorize, when you're already negative! Before when you "cleared" ballance didn't have enough to cover a transaction, it was declined. But now with the new pollicy that's done away with, OH, but you can "opt" out of this part by sending in some letter to a PO box that'll fall through the cracks and nothing ever will be done with it! Now really why would you opt both of these at the exact same time. Well it's because they sneak the first couple overdrafts in there (even though you had money) but if they were to alert you that you were already negative (by declining your card), than they couldn't hit you for the other $500 in charges.

I personally RARELY ever have a problem with OD charges, cause I keep a close eye on it. 3 snow ball's this month with a total of more than $1000 in overdraft charges. All three times there was money in my account, more than enough to cover, but there were magically "authorizations" that made the funds "unavailable"... Get the ### outa here...$1000 when I actually had money in there?

As a customer I'm entrusting my money to a bank, I turst them to hold it, take care of it, watch after it, and make interest with it. I shoul NOT have to pay them when I'm doing a servie to them by LETTING them hold on to it for me. I'm LOANING it to them to make a piss interest rate so they can intern loan it back to me at 7-8% on a house 10-20% on a car or 15-30% on a credit card? Now on top of that I have to pay them out the ### because of how their magical system calculates things? ### THAT!

Becasue I did have issues with transferin money before when their online was down, I tried to get OD protection. I was told "Oh yea, no problem, with you're credit score we're going to give you the max ($2K)" Two months later, I got OD charges again, come to find out they didn't set it up. Not only that but they didn't give a ###. They had to repull my credit (which hurts my highly guarded score), and then they come back and tell me that I've had too many OD's in the last month that they can't set it up? WTF? Really? I have OD's cause those ###s didn't do their job right the first time, and you're not going to give me a line of credit cause you're affraid that I"m going to use it? How does that work?

I think what they really meant to say was, "If we set this up for you than our big wigs with inflated sallaries can't screw your ### as hard and take your hard earned money!"

Yes they did inform us though. Somewhere around March, it was on the last page of your statement, written in really small writing, disguised with a combination of legal, and "we're helping you" lingo, with statements like our debt system will be in "real time" (like it wasn't already before) sounding like they're updating to some cool new system. It was in that part with usless stuff that NO ONE EVER READS! Oh, and somewhere in the "we'll screw you" section of your paperwork when you first opened the account, you agreed that they could change pollicies to steal your money at any time, and you're ok with that.

Funny thing is ###s (probably who work there) get on here to defend them saying statement's like "well you just don't know how to manage your money", funny thing is that's the exact same attitude that the employee's there have too! I know that the complaint rate, and account clouser rate, AND the amount of online bashing has increase ALOT since this pollicy has enacted. Why cause we all can't manage our money? No you ### stick! It's because this policy SUCKS, and was soley implamented and designed to SCREW US out of our money... Again, why would you enact BOTH these new policies at the same time? Neither of them help us, One is designed to take the money, and the other to inflate the amount they can take. They word it like "we're doing you a favor by allowing you to purchase and by covering your purchases", the thing is though, by the time they're authorizing things because the funds aren't available you're well stooped into OD charges, AND to add to the confusion, they don't show up till a DAY LATER, so even if you think you got things straight, YOU DON'T cause they're already working on ###ing you again!

### TCF! And ### every last employee with the "I don't give a ###, it must be your fault attituede!"

TCF Bank overdraft fees and closed account

My husband and I received a letter in the mail one weekend stating that there was unusual activity related to our account and the letter suggested that we call TCF. My husband proceeded to call and was told that there was a charge to our account of $500 dollars of overdraft fees due to 15 checks that they had paid on our behalf. My husband asked the customer service rep over the phone if there was anything that could be done and the CSR told him she could do a 1 time adjustment / credit of $174.00 but that still left us with a huge debt. When we asked the CSR to tell us what happened, she told us that my husband's payroll check was pending and that it had not been credited yet but they ran the charges first before posting his payroll. What a way to rip off clients of their hard earned $$. This happened again several weeks later when their online stated I had a certain amount so I went by that and lo and behold I got another $140.00 of NSF fees. When I went in and asked the lady what this was about she said that 4 items had been paid hence the NSF fees. I told the lady that the on line banking information said that I had enough $$ to cover those items. She then continues to tell me that items fall on and off, ie one day you run your on line statement and it may show it pending. So the next day it doesn't show up so you figure it's paid. But no, the next day it pops up again. I asked her to tell me how this is possible but she said she couldn't explain it that it just happens. I'm sorry but the people at the Roseville branch are IDIOTS! I finally closed my account with them after 2 rip offs. I always heard people say they hated TCF and I never knew why, now i do...

I have come to the conclusion that TCF are nothing but Scam artist. Ihave finally caught them red headed manipulating my tractions to cause my account to go into the red, and then charge me overdraft charges. Here is a classic example of how they do it and I'm certain this is part of their banking software. When your account gets below a certain amount you start noticing unsual fees (non TCF atm fees -on debit transactions) this is how they start the scam, they know you can't possible knowhow much money is in your account and to help the process along they add on the hidden fees in the hopes you cross the magic treashhold and your account goes negative but most of time its because of the fee you don't know your being charged. Other times they just move transactions around to make you account go negative to charge you a fee; when you call and complain they offer to remove half the fees, but your still stuck paying riduculous amount. I am through with their bank and I enourage everyone to leave also.

TCF Bank horrible service

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS BANK. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I opened an account at TCF while my husband was deployed overseas so he could transfer money to me. I had to open my own account because TCF refused to put me on my husbands account because he couldn't come into a branch to verify, despite being told it couldn't be done since he was a deployed soldier. After receiving a check to from someone else and depositing it.. NOT spending ANY of it. I went to check my account about a week later to see if the check had cashed yet or not, only to discover that the check had bounce (not my fault) and in reaction to this TCF CLOSED my account without notifying me. I NEVER got a letter saying they closed my account. After going into two different branches I was finally able to get my account re-opened only to have a fraudulent internet charge for almost a hundred dollars appear on my account two months later.

I contacted TCF the day the charge happened to figure out how to resolve the issue immediately. I filed all of the paperwork they needed and even tried contacting the company myself. I got a letter about a month later telling me that TCF needed ME to contact the company to resolve this matter and then respond to them. I tried to contact the seemingly non-existent internet company with no luck and wrote a letter and filled out a form TCF sent me in response to my findings. This time I faxed the information they needed three times and even went into a branch and made the branch manager fax it and then call to make sure it was received. Then I waited. I received a credit on my account for the fraudulent charge and thinking the matter was finished. I closed the account. Three months later I received a letter saying that I needed to pay more than the amount of the fraudulent charge or my account would be closed (I had already closed it). The following day I received a call from a collection agency for even more money in regards to my TCF account. I contacted TCF and they informed me that since I had waited five months they couldn't do anything and i would have to settle with the collection agency.

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS BANK. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

How sad is it, when the best bank I had EVER delt with, was in fact in CANADA. Royal Bank of Canada or (RBC) had everything posted IMMEDIANTLY when it hit my account. Checks, debits, bills, mortgage payments. If I touched it, it would out, posted and processed the second I did it. There was no delays, no waiting periods, no next business day b.s. And as for direct deposits - if it was sent - IT WAS THERE...

When I moved back home to the states, I figured open an account... I seen the "$50 free checking" signs posted and when I signed up for the account, I SPECIFICALLY asked questions pertaining to the information I posted in the above paragraph. They kept saying "yes yes yes". When in reality it was "no no no." I dropped them like a bad habit when "gas station" fund holds started.. but before that I had direct deposit. On friday at 12am it was in the account. I did my normal friday and saturday shopping and come to find out that Monday would roll around and I was hit with 300+ NSF. I had NEVER had that happen to me in my life and it won't happen again. I tried to close the account after everything was paid and they said "Oh we're still waiting on one gas station charge to come in" HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?! When I was younger, I worked for a gas station. They processed and posted those accounts EVERY MORNING! SO IT'S NOT THEM WAITING AROUND ON THEIR [censor] TO DO IT. TRUST ME, THEY WANT THEIR MONEY JUST AS MUCH. But TCF makes their money if the account is messed up a bit and will continue to attempt to make you feel like its YOUR fault. I don't think so... So since they wouldn't close the account.. and stole over 300 from me easily in two weeks - I let it sit... OH then they called saying "How come you haven't used your account - I noticed that its in NSF for $16" Well... I could have went and paid the petty $16 but now its about proving a point. I don't need extra "credit" and I don't care so they can shove it up their [censor]..

TCF Bank terrible!!!

It is critical to have a 3:00 cut off time for the bank, however going into the bank to make a cash deposit at 2:52 and I stand waiting in for a long time with the line growing behine me. I count 4 able body TCF wokers all behind the counter with signs in front of them that say next window please. One worker helping any/all customers that walk through the door, ONE! What is wrong with that picture? It's like they deliberatly are doing other things so they can screw all of us that need to be in by the 3:00 cut off! Come on, what's that all about. Then she prints me a reciept with no time stamp on it. A date and other useless information is on it but not time stamo that seems to be so crucial. I call 612-TCF-BANk and even the woman on the phone tells me, "gosh yes we don't have time stamps on reciepts, that IS strange". Gee do ya think! Scamming bunch of BS...I'm DONE with TCF.

Tcf is garbage. I have been with this bank for years. Mysterious disappearing and re-appering account information. I had a 34, 000 money transfer into my account at TCF.
I went to the bank to open up two other accounts in this same bank and was told by the bank manager that she couldn't approve letting me get funds out to pay my bills or open up other accounts because it had to post. But I was able to use my debit card so that they could rack up more charges on my account. She told me that my money which I had might fall off the map. Bull! And to think I was going to deposit $100, 000 into this low life bank. To end this on a positive note, thanks TCF for sending me to Chase.

TCF Bank tcf bank knowingly commits fraud in order to steal money from customers

I have been a member of TCF Bank for only a few months. Their policy on handling deposits is that if it is made before 2pm that it is available the same day, or after 2pm available the following day. If they are to put any type of hold on your money they are supposed to credit $100 of it. For one, my money was not immediately put on hold. Secondly, the check was shown as 'posted' via online banking and also showed up on my ATM balance inquiry. They did all but follow their policy in regards to my business account though.

Out of nowhere I was hit with more than $600 in overdraft fees. I called up the 800-TCF-Bank and was put on the phone with a supervisor within less than a couple minutes. First I was told that I did not deposit the check before 2pm, at which point I offered to fax a copy of my deposit receipt which clearly showed I did in fact make the deposit before 2pm. After his first attempt to defraud me was exposed, the supervisor explained to me that my checks were put on hold by the fraud department because they “could not be verified."

I could understand this point had I not deposited checks from “webmaster checks" (one of the biggest check processors for online webmasters there is) several times before without any problem whatsoever. She explained to me that sometimes Bank of America does not verify checks for other banks and even went into detail in her argument. I would have believed her had the lady at the branch not told me that her corporate office directly lied to me, and that the other bank would not have even had a chance to see the check at this point.

In fact she changed the story to blame that ATM deposits take an extra few days to process. Funny, it doesn't say ATM transactions take longer in the TOS and even on the ATM itself they have the same funds availability policy shown everywhere directly on the ATM itself. Even still, why would the check show up as posted via online banking and through the ATM? Better yet, why was my check not put on 'hold' until 2 days later after more than a hundred dollars in petty transactions were made?

The problem is that they allowed me to deposit a check, made funds available in accordance with their policy to my business check card, then out of nowhere 2 days later decide to after the fact put my funds on hold for the mere purpose of taking a $35 fee out on every pending transaction I had (which were all transactions made the night of my deposit, and posted the following day after my deposit). They then argued with me that I should not have purchased anything with my business check card despite depositing money in accordance with their funds availability policy.

The teller explained to me that “I should wait to see if they put a hold on my money or not" despite the fact that they have never done this before, and even still they are knowingly refusing to honor their “$100 credit" policy which states that if funds are to be put on hold then $100 credit is to be given out of the deposit. Basically they told me that after making a deposit to ignore their funds availability policy, what they show on online banking, or what they show on any sort of balance.

Basically, they told me that I should never spend money considering the hold was placed 2 business days after the check was deposited (after tons of petty transactions were made that would have caused the account to overdraft anyway if the check was on hold - therefore should have been declined). Not one transaction which was created the night after my deposit was for more than $20. In fact more than half of the transactions which subsequently were given $35 fees were less than $5. Had the $100 credit been issued in accordance with their policy or the funds been available in accordance with their funds availability policy none of this would have happened.

Please help me to expose the unlawful things at least one bank has been doing to try to take advantage of its clients during the recession. Several other banks have settled class action lawsuits and other civil suits for purposely manipulating its transactions the same way this bank has now done to me. I know I am not the only person who is having problems because I have heard more than enough horror stories about TCF Bank before experiencing first hand – I put convenience of their banking hours ahead of rumors and previous stories on [redacted] - I wish I had listened to the rumors or researched this bank for even 30 seconds before opening an account.

I have had to deal with nothing but problems and lies. Every time I have had even small problems with TCF the response you get depends on the person. If you call up 3 times in a row and speak to 3 different people then you will get 3 different fabricated stories guaranteed.

I was very lucky to have printed copies of my online banking that showed the check being deposited, a deposit slip showing the deposit was made before 2, and a copy of an ATM balance inquiry before they pulled this stunt. The bank manager put the money back in my account when he realized they were out of lies and excuses and that I had them by the balls.

I hope someone files a class action lawsuit against TCF Bank. I don't even want some of the money, I just think that they need to be taken off their pedestal and taught that even banks can't get away with fraud.

I've had TCF for way too long (8 years) but I've never really had a problem until the last 6-9 months. Almost same as above complaint, also $0.30 charge for each time I used my debit card as debit (which is so ridiculous in my opinion )and they hit me with multiple overdraft charges, even when it was clearly their fault, all of which came out of my pocket because I just got sick and tired of being transferred again and again to other people. I've since taken my business elsewhere and opened up my new account with a bank through my employer. I did tell the last person I talked to from TCF "You people should be ashamed of yourselves--screwing people out of their hard-earned money" and they said "But sir, that's not the case at all" to which I told them to F*** off, I'm taking my business elsewhere, and I have :)

TCF Bank unnecessary bank check holdings, bank fraud, overdraft charges

I have banked for more than 49 years at Midwest Federal/TCF Bank Branch in Edina & Edina Cub Foods TCF. I have paid back Equity lines and been a good bank customer.

However it is clear that the bank is creating scenarios to create EXCESSIVE OVERDRAFT fees,
and withholding funds from people. Herein lies a HUGE PROBLEM for our economy. THE BANKS. is that a surprise?

If they generate an 8 day holding time. 4:00 on Thursday one week, my funds aren't available until the following Friday - 8 days. (they like to call it 5 business days)...During that time I'm unable to pay vendors, hire people, pay my suppliers, or do other business as my hands are tied.

What a joke that Bank of America is spending big bucks on ads they are out to help small business. No one is. Anyone that succeeds with small business today, does it in spite of their banks, not with the support of the banks.

Any checks that I write are going to bounce. Even though they have $5, 000 of my money in their bank. Bank managers won't help you to get approval. They probably can, they won't. Or they play favorites, or discriminate based on race? Perhaps they help some and not others.

We have a major problem with the banks. We have all outgrown them. We need new systems
they provide no service to me. An anonymous machine is better than our banks. Please paypal, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, someone...please hear us. It's clear our Governors aren't listening.

When I tried to complain about the check holding, I was told to call the Federal Reserve. Try that exercise...some day if you have a day with nothing to do. No one is home. Or are they having a big lunch downtown? Not sure.

So other than holding checks so they can create overdraft fees, what's up?

I had $4.37 overdraft and they actually created 2 $35 overdraft fees and put an overdraft fee on my overdraft fee--to charge $70. That's just simply bank theft and fraud.

I vote for getting the cops to stop in their $300, 000 cop cars ticketing for seat belts. I'd rather assign someone to investigate white collar crimes going on in the banks.

Is there a better bank? I bet they are all getting away with screwing their customers.

Let's get some consumer protection laws in here. You've got people ready to commit suicide over it...this is a huge cry for help.

Meanwhile...watch out for their ad for their free checking. (right)

Wells Fargo has taken 2 thousand dollars from me in less than a year - creating situations so that they can charge me for overdraft. They put a cap on how much of my own money I can take out of an ATM per day and when I call to increase the limit per day they tell me that they wont do it for me because I have had insufficient funds in the past. They treat me like ### because of the insufficient funds and when I found that my card was used without my permission and thousands of dollars went missing. There was nothing they could do - they couldnt even lift the daily limit of withdraws so that I could get the rest of my money out of their bank. They still havent responded to my dispute and it has been 7 days.

Same problem with me. They basically charge TWICE: once when they "hold" the money and again when it clears. Outrageous! I plan to complain to EVERYONE until something is do. MY experience is with Wachovia that is now part of Wells Fargo.

Amen! I have been on unemployment and I don't think I have seen a full check yet! My son I and I are going without groceries because they keep stealing my money! I had to open a new account somewhere else because as soon as my unemployment check goes in they take 1/2 in overdrafts! I have never had this problem... Obviously this is a growing problem because Dateline had a report last night! The banks have made 38 BILLION dollars this year from over draft fees! WHO BAILED THEM OUT? WE BAILED THEM OUT TO TURN AROUND AND SCREW US?

TCF Bank unfair over draft fees

For the last two months I had been trying to bring my bank account and bills up to date in an economy that is troubled. I'm laid off right now and am having trouble paying bill. I'm on a budget with just enough money comming in from unemployment to pay bills. For the last two months TCF Bank had charged me over $800 in just over draft fees With my over drafts being only just over $100 total. With these fees Im having trouble living to where I dont want to live anymore. I had just gotten off the phone with TCF Bank with a $5.87 over draft and some how the way the suffle the money around I'm stuck paying $210.00 extra dollars on top bringing the total to $215.87 how can this be? Its all on the way they suffeld my money around and I cant figure out how they keep getting away with this. when I call them they give me a run around and tell me its how I spend my money like its my fault. Ok I went over $5.87 so charge me the $35.00 over draft fee but dont times it 6 times. Is anyone else having trouble with TCF Bank un fair overdrafts? How can we boycott TCF Bank? Is it fair that I have to pay $210.00 on top of my $5.87 over draft? I'm so sick here is my email if anyone can help me or if you want to share the nonsence that TCF Bank is doing to you. [protected]@yahoo.com please share with me your TCF Bank problems and if there is anyway to shut TCF down?

The overdraft charges on pending transaction are so dubious. The funny thing is they do not apply a pending credit to one's account if it comes against a pending charge. The logic is warped. If you are going to charge me an overdraft fee for a charge that has not even been posted yet; but, when you deny me the same logic when it is a pending credit to my account, you in effect vitiate the whole argument for charging an overdraft fee on a pending charge. A pending charge has not been paid to the merchant so why charge the customer if that throws an account into negative. Something has to be done with these banks. This is what you all need to know. They will reverse the overdraft fees if the charge is reversed by the merchant. If it is something you bought and you return it for the full amount, the charge should be reversed. A lot of people don't know that.

At least your not with Bank of America, its much worse. I got charged 35usd over a 30cent overcharge, ontop of the fact I had money in the savings that they were suppose to take the money from to cover it. Then they decided to hold money so the 'store' charged each order seperate. Giving 2 additional overdraft fee's which 'were' covered completely. All in all its costing me 180usd over a 40usd overdraft. with 5overdraft fee's and still waiting on the 'extended' because I can't make a payment on it until after the first of next month..

Yes, TCF has become really shady. Just last week, I had about $100 in my account and charged around $80 over the weekend. On Monday all the transaction were pending still and I had 4 items post which brought my balance to around $60, more then enough to cover the other pending charges. So around 7-8pm on Monday (which is considered the next business day for the bank) I pulled out $100 from the ATM figuring my payroll was coming in over night and it will cover the available balance that went into the negative. But no, TCF decided to turn the transactions around and put the $100 withdrawal first before the pending charges and 4 posted transactions that happened in the morning and say I caused my available balance to go into the negative for the day and those 4 posted items were paid for by TCF which they charged me $140 in overdraft fees, even though my payroll came in overnight and put my balance way in the positive. I called them up and the guy hung up on me when I asked to talk to a supervisor, so I marched up to my local branch and was able to get the branch manager to refund 3 of the 4 fees. If they didn't think it was messed up, she would not have refunded any.

Yes! I am having the same problem! The online banking is a joke! The tellers have no idea what they are doing and according to the Bank Manager where I live all the banking policies changed in April. I have also noticed that they hold all the pending transactions and then let everything through at once. They are stealing my unemployment check with the constant overdraft fees! I have my deposit slips that show my available balance, I have printouts of what my online record is telling me, and the overdraft statements showing me what my available balance was at the time of the transaction and nothing seems to coinside! I am closeing my account and going purely to cash!

I agree this bank loves to take money from ppl in overdraft fees. They took over $400 bucks in fees last month when i had money pending...tho it takes 3 days for atm deposit to clear all the sudden?! ya right i'm done with them! Plus their emplyees are not perfessonal. All together this bank sucks and I would never refer them to anyone!

TCF Bank closed account

***I recently opened an account with TCF Bank. They had a promotion going on and needless to say I needed that extra $50.00 dollars! I went on there website this morning to view my account balances and my accounts were CLOSED! So I called customer service ( You can't call the branch directly because the only number listed for them is an 800 number) They said I need to go into the branch and so them MORE proof of identification they had enough identification to open the account with the identification I provided so there should be no reason I have to go in there again. While I was on the Phone with Customer service and all they kept saying was that there very sorry I got hung up on! This bank has the worst customer service out of anywhere I have ever been and I would NEVER reccomend them to anyone! It's really not worth whatever promotion they have going on!

My situation was not good also, I work for the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan and one day there was some workers from the TCF bank there giving out some wonderful free things and so I talked to them and they had a offer, if I open a account with them that day, I would get free Money into my account after I made a deposit. Well, I did not find the bank in my area and I was told the account was not a active account until a deposit was made. One day I got a box of checks and another week, I got a statement from the bank telling me that I had a overdraft for $148.00. that I did not pay for the shipping for the checks and I did not make a deposit into the account, so I was now overdrawn.
People please be so careful, do not open a account with a bank like I did in hopes of some free money and a few gifts like a pen and things, it goes to show you that nothing is for free, evn a ink pen.
When I called the customer service people number that was on the Statement, I got a nice lady on the phone and said she would give me a credit and close the account for me and then she put me on hold and said that her supervisor said she could not do that for me that I had to go to the bank that I open the account with and I did not go to a bank and to this date, I can not find the bank.
What a scam and a joke, this bank sure is not customer friendly, this is wrong and Not right.

TCF Bank - fraud and customer service

I had Fraud activity that had occured on my account. What was really sad is that the name on the check did not match the name of my account. I cannot believe that the Bank would allow a check even though it had my account number on it but even worse was not even a real check it was counterfiet and they allowed it to be withdrawn from my account. No wonder...
