Do not touch Tanglewood Cedar (www.tanglewoodcedr.co.uk) with a bargepole. I ordered a wooden garden bar from their site at a cost of £599 on 23rd August via PayPal believing it would arrive for my big Birthday party on 7th October as the site said 4 weeks delivery time (they have since changed it to 4-6 weeks). I talked to the owner Jim (after many times trying to get through and constantly leaving messages) who gave me his word I would receive my bar by the 7th October. I called 2 weeks before delivery (again after many texts and voicemails) Jim responded to say all was in hand but he was having difficulty sourcing the Oak from France. Apparently he had a worker gone off ill and also moving house. This was just a few of the myriads of reasons he has given over the period to renege on his promise. On the 6th I called again and finally got a response and was told it would not be there for my big day. I was of course both fuming and upset as I had 45 guests arranged and no bar! He swore on his life (wonder he isn't dead) that it would definitely be here within the next two weeks. This came and went. I got another excuse that he had an order of 75 bars from a German company needing them for Christmas... So last Friday 27th October, I gave Jim an ultimatum that I would claim my money back through PayPal and again he asked for yet another reprieve (this is now almost 3 months) and promised to call me on Monday with a delivery date. Of course no call or text or email. So today I have written my complaint. If Jim is correct he has been paid for about 80 bars and at £600 each that amounts to possibly £480, 000 now sitting in his account. I can now only believe that this is a scam and you should not part with your money. The full payment is demanded up front. I cannot even write about the quality of the product as after such a long time I still have not got it!

In April 2019 I ordered the Hero’s bar through Refined Natural Oak. I have had excuses for lack of delivery having paid £1000. Have now come across this link and it would appear clear that this is a continuing fraud. Any advice as to next steps would be appreciated.

Hi Steven
I am in the same position. Ordered beginning May for delivery this month but excuses after excuses. Seemed so genuine but now is clear it is all a con.

I'm another disgruntled customer of Tanglewood Cedar - I placed an Order for a Log Store last September and still no delivery. Don't I feel the fool having now read the issues on this site. The same products scam continues at: http://www.refinednaturaloak.co.uk/ although it does not seem to be a registered company. That site is hosted by http://www.fasthosts.co.uk so may try and see if they will shut it down. Anything else I can be doing to help the cause against James Lack?

Unfortunately the response from fasthosts was not as I'd hoped:

"Thank you for contacting us.

As we have no way of substantiating the claims in either your email or the URL in question we are not in any position to take any action against the site in question.

In this case I can only advise you to make contact with Action Fraud and/or Trading Standards, and please be aware that we will take any appropriate action if contacted by either of them.

Kind regards,

Michael Swift

No, he last told me money back 4th Jan. He is pathological liar. I've now sold the debt and added a further £1000 for interest and hassle. They are now going to collect £2500 from him. I let you know how it goes.

Yes ordered my bar in August this year with delivery first week of October. Still waiting for the bar and he just gives excuse after excuse. I just wished I had seen all this before going ahead serves me right for not doing my research. I am still in touch with him now his last communication was yesterday saying I will get my money back once his finances are sorted or I could still have the bar. It’s a joke now but looks like he has a lot of people chasing him. Cowboy...

I contacted him yesterday, 22nd Nov 2018. He said his Barclays bank account is frozen and that Barclays are releasing funds Tuesday 27th Nov and that he will refund my £1500 then.

I told him he has until Wednesday or I'm selling the debt! And he won't like the debt collectors :-)

So there are two situations: one is the attempt to strike off the company, and the second is his personal bankruptcy. I've had the strike off suspended, as I previously mentioned, on the basis that I'm still chasing payment in respect of the judgment against Tanglewood. With regard to his bankruptcy, I also have judgment against him personally, so I will add my name to the list of creditors. I don't believe it's a case of misfortune; I believe it's a case of total and continuing dishonesty.

Further to above: I've been unable to find contact details for Simon Miller. The Insolvency Service website shows a G O'Hare as the Receiver for the Nottingham area. Presumably www.refinednaturaloak.co.uk cannot be a limited company as an undischarged bankrupt is barred from being a company director.

Thanks "Logstore"! I've only just seen your post. I'll check out your lead re Simon Miller. Meantime, I received an email dated 26th October from the Dissolution Case Officer, Dissolution Support, Companies House saying that, in view of the evidence I submitted, they have suspended the strike off action until 17th January. The 'evidence' I submitted was simply an email to Tanglewood Cedar and James Lack reminding that judgment had been entered in my favour and that I require the debt to be settled forthwith etc. Companies House say that I will need to submit further up to date documentary evidence to show I'm still actively pursuing the company before 17 January, so I intend to write another chasing email before that date. Meantime, my action has elicited a response from Mr Lack saying I'm 'wasting my time'. Well, I intend to waste his as well by continuing to object to the strike off in the hope that it makes it difficult for him to set up another company, or to buy the assets of Tanglewood which he claims to have done.

The Receiver has sent a questionnaire to gather more information. However, if the money is not forthcoming from the Receiver, I gave James Lack two options. Either refund in full (which he can't due to bank account being frozen) or I will sell the debt to people that will recover the money. And he won't like the latter!

I've received a letter from Forbes Burton, a company recovery and closure business. They have been appointed by Tanglewood Cedar "to assist with their present financial difficulties", as a result of which they have made an application on behalf of Tanglewood to dissolve the company on the basis that it has no assets. Their letter was accompanied by a Companies House DS01 form, which is an "Application to Strike off". I contacted Companies House and understand that a Director cannot legitimately dissolve a company in order to avoid an unsatisfied court judgment, which in my case is for the non-delivery of a log store. I have written the following to enquiries@companieshouse.gov.uk . I hope this might help in pursuit of this fraudster:
"Dear Sirs,
I write to object to the DS01 ‘Application to Strike off’ in respect of Tanglewood Cedar Ltd, Company No. [protected]. My name is ----- and I am an interested party. I have a judgment entered against the company that remains unsatisfied. The County Court case number is ------. Attached is proof of the judgment which includes the entry in the Register of Judgments, the Notice of Judgment Entered, the Judgment Summary and the Claim Form. The judgment relates to an order placed on 07/09/18 and not delivered, amounting to £504.

The Director would be avoiding payment of the court judgment by dissolving the company. I also note that there is another court judgment unsatisfied. In attempting to dissolve the company without settling the judgment for the debt he has broken the code of conduct in making decisions about the company, and he is not ensuring that procedures to ensure his responsibilities are fulfilled or being lawfully met.

I would be most grateful if you would confirm you have received this email and attachments and look forward to hearing from you as to your decision."

I had an email on 8 Oct from Companies House saying they were unable to register my objection as the evidence I submitted, being the court order, was over six months old. However, today I spoke to the dissolution case officer and I've submitted new evidence that should keep the dissolution suspended, i.e that I'm still demanding payment of the outstanding judgment.

Today I have sent a report on this rogue to newsdesk@nottinghampostgroup.co.uk, including a link to everyone's comments on Complaintsboard.com. I have also recontacted Amazon just to let them know he's still shown as a trader on their website and have received a response saying they are still investigating the issue (not that I bought through Amazon, but felt they should take him down). I also got so incensed with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau's (Action Fraud) continued delay in reviewing my report to them - I've been waiting 10 weeks for a definitive reply - that I've written to the NFIB Director, Detective Inspector O'Doherty. I doubt whether I'll get a response from him!
I am also going to contact Rogue Traders and Watchdog.

Hi All

I had a phone call yesterday from Emma McGregor (police) after i sent her some emails at the weekend. (a friend emailed from his website and asked about the bars and he responded saying he could make him one) Emma informed me that unfortunatley their is nothing we can do. Tanglewood Cedar Ltd is in the hands of the liquadator and she has spoken to the person dealing with this, she also said she has spoken to legal people who have confirmed that he is still able to trade as a sole trader and this is now how he is conducting is business (tanglewood cedar - (Not limited) as you can imagine i feel this is outrageous. He is working from the same workshop in Mansfield, Derby. Personal i am quite prepared to confront him at his place of work if others would be prepared to join me.

Emma suggested that we push ahead with Rogue Traders, Watchdog etc she also said contacting Nottingham Evening Post would be a good idea because they are local and like this kind of press. https://www.nottinghampost.com

https://www.nottinghampost.com/contact-us/

list of contacts above.

It just shows how ridculous the UK law is, last week i received a speeding fine for doing 47 in a 40 (admitadly this is wrong and i accept this) i have to pay a £100 fine. Yet Mr James Lack, Rips people off and i can only imagine he owes £20, 000.00 plus to people and nothing happens! Next day he just carries on!

I keep saying to myself lets just forget about it now, however i just can't let this guy get away! i want him on TV with a Microphone in his face being chased down the street and hounded at least then i will feel my £500.00 as been well spent

We actually received ours; and on time ... just wish we hadn't! Ordered the hero bar and it is the biggest pile of junk ever. Less than a year old and the whole roof leaks, shutters do not fit properly, chunks of wood falling off, panelling on the front coming away from the cheap wood it's been put on top of ...

Endless emails, calls and promises of repair coupled with reassurance that I had a 20 year guarantee (oh how funny is that!) and suprise suprise nothing.

Now no address, no number and no recourse.

He needs to be stopped!

I'm think one of the consumer TV programmes might like to hear our stories of woe. I'm not really knowledgeable about which one, but a Google search reveals Watchdog Live on BBC1, Rip Off Britain, which is also apparently BBC1, and others.
Also, I just phoned Amazon [protected] to let them know that Tanglewood Cedar is still shown as trading on their website (not that I ordered through Amazon). The lady I spoke to said Amazon have closed his seller account and she would look into why it's still showing on the Amazon website.
If police officer Emma does contact you Ashley then could you let me know and I will try and contact her again myself.

Hi I’ve left a message on Emma’s phone yesterday, I’d given up on it all to be honest, he sent me an email in February stating he was going into liquidation, I’ve looked at all these reviews now since I posted and I for o e want some action against this theif, he needs to pay one way or another. I got a friend to email him from his website yesterday making an enquiry and I am shocked he replied, this guy is s theif, he’s carry on his business clearly. The last I heard he had closed his premises in Mansfield, if anyone as hot anywhere with knowing where this crook is I’d be happy to go with a few people and pay this guy a overdue visit. He thinks he’s above the law clearly

If you're keeping an eye on any change to the company status do let me know if it changes and I will also submit a statement.

I made a report to Action Fraud on 19/02/18 and received a letter back from them dated 22/03/18. The update was a standard letter saying they hadn't had time to look into my report due to the volume of reports with which they are dealing (or should I say not dealing). I also left a message for the police officer, Emma from Nottinghamshire Police, as suggested by Ashley124 above, asking Emma to call me. Never got a response. If anyone has any further ideas how to progress this do let me know.

I have now spoken to Forbes Burton who have confirmed that they have quoted him, but he has NOT instructed them to dissolve them company. AND guess what, he's not replying to their contact.

I've been advised me to keep an eye on Companies House, when the staus changes to email Companies House with a statement to stop it happening.

Sorry, I should have said. the answer is no, no money forthcoming. I was going to send in the bailiffs, however, the company address is now given as a PO box number at Companies House, so not much chance of seizing assets from there. I even checked out James Lack's supposed home address at Land Registry online, but the house title is in other people's names and it looks like it was sold in November last year though not sure whether it was really ever his address!

Ok thanks for confirming.
There is a police number on thread above, but so far no answer and doesn’t reply to my voicemails...!

I ordered a log store in September 2016 and paid £399 plus £70 for delivery. I chased delivery multiple times, but, like other people, I received a long catalogue of excuses but no log store. Finally, I issued a moneyclaim online summons and received judgment in my favour on 15/01/18. The sole director James Lack submitted to the Court the following: that the company stopped trading in early October, that he has stopped anyone placing an order on the Tanglewood Cedar ordering system, that the company is no longer trading from the Mansfield company address and that he is buying the assets of the company. However, having checked online at Companies House, the company remains active and the website is also still active. I have today submitted a report to Citizens Advice, who in turn will notify East Midlands Trading Standards (Nottinghamshire Council) and I've also reported this to Action Fraud (actionfraud.police.uk).

I don't, although I would like to know. I took out a warrant against this guy only to be told last Friday that he had ceased trading from his address, although on the Companies House website he is still listed as Active, with the court costs I am in this for £607.

Hi. In the same boat.
Jim actually (!) emailed today stating the company was in the hands of the liquidators. Anybody know who this might be as he’s not giving up the info...?

I have exactly the same experience and would advise anybody to stay clear of this guy and his company. I live in France and ordered a bar in June on a 4-6 week delivery and paid via PayPal. Due to my location I needed to pay an additional £269 for delivery which I duly did via a cheque. Following repeated chasing up and written confirmations that my bar was ready and the hauler identified, the bar failed to turn up. Further chasing up via email and phone calls resulted in no responses at all. As a result I registered a dispute with PayPal in October and finally got my money back for the bar. This left me with the task of getting back the £269 for the delivery costs and despite many attempts to contact Lack, I have received no responses at all. I have now registered an official complaint with Trading Standards and am in the process of taking legal action to get my money back.
