Sun Electronics Vaporware

The following is a copy of the letter filed with the BBB. On 08/17/2011 The BBB REVOKED Sun Electronics for failure to respond to one or more complaints. I also emailed a complaint to the owner John Kimball.
also left out of the letter is the tim the controller sat on Tom Morris's desk for 2 or 3 weeks and when asked about it says oh that's what this controller is doing on my desk even thogh there was a letter sent with it!
On August 2 2010 I purchased a charge controller from Sun Electronics from their website. I paid with paypal in the amount of $208.15, some 2 0r 3 months later I found it to be defective.
I could not get through or was having difficulty speaking to someone who would help me with a return so I looked at their company profile and got in touch with a guy named Daniel after 2 correspondences with Daniel he told me I should return the controller in it's original box with a letter describing the problem. On May 12, 2011
I sent the controller certified return receipt
via U.S. postal mail to Sun Electronics. I have confirmation that the controller was signed for the delivery date was May 20th. signed by MFLORES tracking no; [protected] On June 19, 2011 I emailed to ask the fate of the controller I was subsequently referred to Tom Morris who told me he would check it later.ON June 20th 2011 I spoke to Tom Morris who asked me about the controller despite the fact I had sent a letter with the controller detailing the problem. On June 21st I spoke with Tom again about the problem. On July 12, 2011 I asked what was going on with the controller and Tom Morris admitted it was faulty. On August 30th 2011 I emailed Tom Morris and he blamed it on someone named Tony and said he was handling replacements.Later that same day August 30th 2012 Tom said that they were still waiting on a replacement from the manufacturer and that in the future I should just go to the manufacturer. On Jan.17 2012 I wrote Tom Morris and Gave him Until January 20th 2012 to "make things right or I would take other measures.
Tom Morris wrote an email back that same day January 20th 2012 and said he had the replacement controller. On January 18th 2012 I wrote Tom Morris and gave him my shipping/physical address and asked him to let me know the carrier and tracking number. On January 21st 2012 I emailed Tom Morris and asked him if the controller was shipped. His reply was I need to confirm this on Monday and find the tracking number. On April 24, 2012 I white an e-mail to Tom Morris [protected]@sunelec.com and asked him why he wanted to cheat me on a $200.00 controller. his reply was ; contact [protected]@sunelec.com I am no longer with the company and can't really do anything here.On April 24, 2012 I emailed [protected]@sunelec.com and told him that they still have my controller and that a replacement was promised to me, I included the email from tom that promised me the replacement controller and that for them to continue to hold it constituted fraud by mail. Charlie (Antonio Pirog ) told me he would make everything right if I would just give him the original order number. On April 25, 2012 Antonio Pirog emailed me back and said that he could not vouch for anything that Tom Morris and I discussed and that my purchase was too long ago and I should just go to the manufacturer. On April 25, 2012 I wrote Antonio Pirog back to clarify that they have my replacement controller and there was nothing to go to the manufacturer with. I told them I would prefer my money back but would accept a replacement. On April 26, 2012 Antonio Pirog said he understands and that he needs "an extra day" for the accounting dept. to open the books. on Friday April 27, 2012 I wrote Antonio Pirog and told him I didn't believe him and that if I didn't get my replacement Immediately I would be filing charges. On Monday April 30th after hearing nothing from anyone at Sun Electronics for 2 business days I emailed Antonio Pirog yet again and asked him if he intended to keep up this game? No reply.

Sun Electronics Bait & Switch

This company took 3 months to ship my order and before doing so attempted to switch my order to lower grade panels. I had thought that I had the order corrected but they shipped me the lower grade panels anyway. I ended up refusing shipment and their poor customer service was unable to fix the order before I had to dispute the charges to my credit card. STAY AWAY!

Sun Electronics HORRIBLE ethics, non-existent customer service

When you place an order and choose any shipping method other than the most expensive "Freight", Sun Electronics cancels your order without even telling you (much less WHY they're cancelling it). By the time you figure out your payment has been refunded and you won't be receiving the items you ordered, the merchandise has sold out and is no longer available.

Mind you, all the shipping method options available for your purchase are shown in a drop-down box at checkout, along with the price for each -- but if you don't choose the "Freight" option (which costs hundreds of dollars more than UPS shipping price options), your order will be cancelled without notice or explanation.

If you DO choose "Freight" shipping, you'll find Sun Electronics has shipped you BREAKABLE glass solar panels simply strapped to the sides of a truck, UNPACKAGED and unprotected from damage.

I guess bubble wrap, styrofoam, and shipping boxes cost Sun Electronics too much money to properly package their merchandise, even when the customer is paying them $500-$1000 for shipping.

Funny how their ebay account has 3012 100% positive but havent sold anything in forever, cant find any negative on their 58k+ reviews all 4's and 5's and not one reivew on youtube from anyone? Somethings not right here. All the positives can easily be made by John or employee's. The negatives here have lengthy explanations with sales numbers for proof. Not one Positive review here shows that.
I dont blame them, I cant find one legit company (Middle man) that sells solar panels that isnt either selling junk panels or scamming on the shipping, same with metal building companies, nothing but bad reviews. There's a reason getting good solar power costs more then your life, it isnt worth it.

This is a case of BAIT and SWITCH.

This is what happened to me with the order that I placed with Sun Electronics for the
Evergreen auction PV panels recently.

----------------------------------------

On Nov. 9, 2011 I placed an order with Louis Prophett for 1 pallet (28 panels) of Evergreen
ES-A-200-FA2-S Silver Framed “A” grade 12V panels. On Nov. 11 I called again and added 10 more panels to the order for a friend. The “A” grade panels were all spoken for already and so I agreed for 10 - ES-E 200-FC3 “B” grade black frame panels. I received Invoice #17440 stating this fact dated 11/11/2011. I was told that delivery would be in approx 5 weeks. I was also told that the panels that I originally ordered were made in USA.

Five weeks and more came and went and still no word on my panels. I called several times and
no one ever knew the status but I was told that they would look into it and call me back. I never
received a return call. I was also told that my panels were not going to be ones made in America after all, but they would be made in Belgium. I was okay with that.

Since I am involved in construction on a daily basis I come into contact with Chinese made
products at every turn from tools to locksets to screws to hardware to ceiling fans, bathroom fixtures and A/C equipment and for the most part their products are consistently a piece of crap. I specifically asked your personnel about the origin of the Evergreen panels because I did not want Chinese made panels. I also do not believe that China has had a long enough history in the PV business to fully backup their warranties – and try to file a claim with a Chinese company – good luck. And who knows how long that they will even be in business. They ARE NOT America with consumer protection laws to protect us. I was assured that the panels were made
in Europe – Belgium – and Europe has a long history of quality manufacturing. So I
was okay with that.

So after many phone calls to Sun Electronics to ask about the status of the delivery of my
panels they were finally delivered to my freight forwarder on Feb. 2, 2012 – almost 3 months after I placed – and paid in full – for the order. According to your own blog dated Jan. 23, 2012, “625 of 651 orders were already shipped”. So I guess that I was one of – if not – the last order to be filled. And what I was sent WAS NOT what I ordered. My invoice information was changed but not forwarded to me before the panels were shipped!. At NO TIME did anyone from Sun Electronics bother to call me and ask if it was okay to make a change and send me “B” grade Chinese 24V black frames panels instead of “A” grade silver frame 12V panels made in Belgium. In other words all 38 of the panels on my order were changed to the “B” grade Cinese made panels with black frames – without me knowing anything about this change until
the panels were delivered – to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands!

While looking for any photos that looked like the panels I received I also found this comment
about Sun Electronics at: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1138261/ (I added the red highlights) “trust me guys...DO NOT and I stress DO NOT order from these guys. Their warranty is as good as the owners name because that’s who is warrantying the product. Evergreens are good and if you buy them as such fine. But do not buy based on anything SUN tells you. They are an experience to deal with and count yourself lucky if you get what you order let alone knowing if you ever will. good luck to all.”

--------------------------------------

Sure, these Chinese panels MIGHT put out the same power, but they look like pure CRAP!

Take a look at the attached photos of just some of the panels (along with the “Made in China” label). None of what you see are reflections causing color variations – and what’s up
with the patchwork quilt look?

According to your blog dated March 26, 2011 titled “Evergreen CELLS ARE not made in China” when discussing the “B” grade cells I quote YOU here:

“You will need a need a
magnifying glass to see the blemishes, even then, you may not find any, because
they only occur on just a couple of cells in approx. 5% of the modules.”
I ask you sir, do you need a magnifying glass to see the “blemishes” on my panels? I sure do not.

Even from your own website: http://www.sunelec.com/index.php?main_page=grades

These photos never indicate my “patchwork quilt” blemishes. I do not mind the discoloration, just the patchworks.

This site: http://www.solarpaneltalk.com/showthread.php?2509-New-Evergreen-Panels

Shows two “B” grade Evergreen panels – they look okay to me – no “patchwork” here. I would
have been okay with these.

--------------------------------

So when I had the panels delivered – after I had bought and paid for them three months ago with
my credit card, paid the freight of $537.90, delivery charges $200.00 and off-loading and stacking charges of $200.00 only to see what I was sold (reference the photos) The panels have large white spaces where no silicone is present– I called your company to express my dissatisfaction and was told to just “send them back and I can get a refund” – like that is so easy to do from St. Thomas back to Miami - and who would pay for the return freight, clear them through customs in Miami and reimburse me all my shipping and delivery expenses to date
plus the cost to take them to the dock and repackage them?

I feel like I got the old “bait and switch” treatment”. Also, probably because I was looked at
as:

A) a woman who
probably doesn’t know about these sort of things and so won’t know the difference and

B) it’s the islands so send them whatever we want – which happens ALL THE TIME
to us export customers – the old “they won’t know any better and will never go
to the trouble to send them back”.

My guess is that some of the other local people who got the crappy “B” panels early in deliveries brought them back complaining and so you gave them my “A” panels to make THEM happy and sent me the leftover crap.
--------------------------
So what should I do now? I asked.

“Live with this crap” – which I will have to see every single day as I approach my house (the
panels will be visible from the ground since my house in on the down slope of a hill and the approach is from above). If they were up on a roof never to be seen again once they were installed that is another story – but they are not.

I looked all over the web to try to find someone else who had panels that looked like this and I
could find NOTHING! I have also NEVER since the 70’s seen anything that looked like these patchwork panels. Have you? If so, send me something else to show me how others dealt with this predicament.

Another site (http://www.altestore.com/forums/Renewable-Energy/RE-General-Discussion/B-Grade-PV-Modules/index.php/topic, 2156.0.html)
discussing “B” grade panels states the following: (I added the red highlights)

So what are B Modules? In general,
manufacturers of solar panels will sometimes inadvertently build PV modules
that have small cosmetic defects or blemishes that can affect the appearance of the solar module. Typically, these discolorations will have very little to no effect on a module's performance. Because B modules do not have a completely uniform appearance, they can usually be purchased at a lower price than their "A" module counterparts.

Also on this same site I located the following comment:

“Q. I am curious if the source of Evergreen B spec modules will rapidly dry up now
that they are shifting the assembly of the panels to China?

A. perhaps, but every time a new module comes out, or a new production facility, there is often a surge in B modules as a "work out the kinks" process seems to take place. by no means is this official, it is just what i have noticed over the years.”

Since my panels were “Made in China” have I paid to help them “work out the kinks”?

I was also told that Sun Electronic was going to personally honor the Evergreen warranty. I
would like to see a copy of the warranty in writing because to date I have not been provided with that document.
---------------------------------

I never received any response from Mr. Kimball even though I sent this email to him – and Louis Profphett several times. I would NEVER recommend doing business with this company! The panels are still stacked on my back porch as of August 2014. I am reminded and disgusted every time I walk by them.

So far so good...My order was filled and promptly shipped. Purchased over $9000 worth of equipment (entire package) for a 5KW solar system. I did direct deposit because I have the same Bank as they do, again no problem. Order arrived in California in less than 30 days. Considering they had to get some of the panels from New Jersey, I felt it more than timely. Thank you Lek and John :)

I just ordered 6 more panels similar to the 10 purchased last year, tried to pick a similar size and voltage 190wat SUN's. Last years order went well just didnt really know when it was shipping, it was shipping all 10 in perfect condition NEW. This years order arrived when the driver called saying that he would be there tomorrow. OK unwrapped the panels and they are noticable USED. nothing on the website indicated these where used I will be calling Monday to see what can be worked out exchange or upgrade. wish me luck.. I have written like 10-15 letters to sunelec asking them to either delivery the inverter i have prepaid (SUNNYBOY7000) or refund the money. They first claimed i had received the inverter, then they said they were waiting for answer from the manufacturer if he had delivered the item, then they said nothing. I contacted the inverter manufacturer and they had told Juan Vergara at sunelec.com that i had not gotten the inverter. I forwarded this email to Juan, but no response. I then wrote on their main sales contact email that Juan was not responding and all of the situation - no answer. I wrote John Kimball - no answer. I called them on their phone - the answering board picked it up - put me through to Juan - and then i got disconnected on purpose. When i called again - no answer.

I have just written them again - on Juan Vergaras direct mail and to John Kimball - this must be the 10th time. I expect no answer. Im starting to consider if I should hire a lawyer and file a case against them.

I've bought panels from Sunelec 3 times over the past 5 years and about the only problem I ever had was a language barrier when I placed my first order. ALL orders were shipped in factory boxes with edge protection and required some work to open. The product ALWAYS was shipped in a timely manner and shipping cost was reasonable for the size and weight of shipment.
No company I know of has a perfect track record when it comes to customer service, but as for Sunelec I have never had an issue with them.

I haven't ordered solar products from them, but I did get a generator from them and had no problems. Also visited their office and warehouse when I went out of Ft Lauderdale on cruise, to check them out before I ordered something.
