Staples / refund problem!

I purchased a scanner at my local Staples store on 12/13. The store personnel couldn't figure out how to either generate my rebate forms from the register or give me a blank one, so after ten minutes of their fumbling around and handing me things that had nothing to do with the scanner I'd purchased, I asked for a refund. My refund was processed within ten minutes of the sale. I used my debit card to purchase the item for $108.23, and the same amount was credited to my card.

When I got home, I checked my online banking statement. The sale transaction had already been processed, so Staples sucked $108.23 out of my account on 12/13. The credit had not yet appeared. Today is 12/17, and the credit still has not appeared on my statement. So, Staples has been holding my money for four days now.

Now, I'm fairly certain that if I told the store personnel that I intended to hold the scanner for four days while I waited for the funds to appear in my account, I'd have been arrested on my way out the front door. However, Staples is holding both the scanner and the funds used to purchase it. Is this right? Is this fair? Why are they entitled to hold the money of dissatisfied customers and collect interest on it?

Staples has over 2,000 stores around the world. If they do one refund of this size at every store, they are holding about a quarter of a million dollars of customer funds. Let's say they do that same refund at every store every day of the week---that's 1.75 million a week. Anybody got a calculator? How much money are they making off this policy?

If the folks at Staples are smart enough to suck money out of my account within moments, they should be smart enough to come up with a system that puts it back with the same speed---or they should pay me interest for the use of my funds.

staples is doing the same to be with the exception that they also took an additional $21.35 from my bank account using my visa debit without my authorization. I made a purchase of 149.44 which included one of their $20.00 instant discounts. I returned the item, and then noticed the additional $21.35 taken from my bank account WITHOUT authorization. I called staples immediately and their response was that I would be receiving a credit for $170.79 within 3-10 business days. I asked why not just the $149.44. She replied, that the staples system doesn't recognize their very own online instant discount and that the refund was going to be at the original price of $159.99 plus tax for a total of $170.79. So they took the additional $21.35 out of my account WITHOUT my authorization. Now, they're holding more of my money than the actual original purchase was. I'll never buy from them again.

in response to the original blogger.. staples does refund all of your money, however it does take up to 10 days to process the return from the store itself to the corporate office then to your bank.. i do see a flw in your comment however, if you payed with your debit card ("I used my debit card to purchase the item for $108.23, and the same amount was credited to my card.") you would have been handed 108.23 in cash o the spot, but with your credit card you must wait the 3-10 business days as the last commeter stated!

i have the same thing 170 bucks charged on my debit/credit card in person since i went to their store, they said delivery the next day 24 hours, it never came the next day or the next or the next day, i cancelled the order and since it was friday they said an investigation of the matter would begin monday for a refund, monday came and gone it is tuesday and still nothing refunded. so it has been 8 days since i bought a printer and 8 days no refund of 170 bucks. they have advertisements on their store online site delivery in 24 hours do not believe it once the order is made your screwed it will never be delivered in 24 hours once the order is made staples looses all track of the item the tracking they give is false and does not know where your item is, it may say out for delivery but at 7pm that night it will revert to ran out of time for delivery new delivery within 24 hours and it is a loop it can go days doing that, buy items walk out with them never believe the liars at staples with bogus tracking and the online chat help on their site will lie to you to keep you on the string beware it is a lie bot nothing it says are true, their guarantee means noting their word means noting they maintain the poorest service save yourself the trouble shop elsewhere.
