Spark Energy Crooks and liars

I was had one of the Spark (as I call them now) crooks come to my door and deseave me by telling me my bill would be cheaper because I was being overcharged as a house instead of a condo and every since I have been being ripped off. I canceled this deceptive charge with Spark energy three months ago. I was told last month it would not be on my bill anymore after last month because it takes two billing cycles to come of. I WANT THIS OFF MY BILL NOW! I want a complaint filed against the man who came to my door and lied to me. I have been lied to and I want my money back. This is ridiculous.

Claimed loss: $160.00

Desired outcome: Refund

Spark Energy Shady business practices, nonexistent client services

I bought a house, and according to my purchase documentation I was with EDF. Months into it, I receive a letter from Sparks, I went to their web-site and at the time they had such an incredibly unprofessional web-site (they've improved it tremendously since then) with two pages of static info and copyrights from 2 years ago that I decided this is a hoax - I replied to their e-mail, got an automatic NOT DELIVERED reply and just disregarded the whole thing. Months later after more letters I realised they are a real energy company and I was indeed signed up with them. It took me literally half a year to get off them and I'm still not sure if I have - at some point they asked for a £1, 600 payment for 3 months of gas & electricity use... we settled to 200, I paid from their web-site, then 2 months later it turned out they HAVE NOT received the payment and indeed it was not charged on my account althugh I am sure I processed it from their web-site, so they had sent my case to a collectors' office and I had to pay a fee for that. Just last week I had another letter from them with another fee for late payment and a further charge for electricity usage even though I have already transferred to EDF... nonexistent client services and internal rules that are designed to mislead & get clients into traps. Never ever buy into it.

Spark Energy Teaser rate then double to triple bill

My consern is with the business practices of Spark Energy, Houston TX who is a supplier through Nipsco's alternate gas supplier program.

Specifically, Spark Energy's business practice is to quote new customers a competitive rate which is portrayed as a typical monthly rate, then charge double to three times Nipsco's rates after 2 months.

My eperience is summarized in the following narative:

Spark Energy telephone canvases a market offering 8% savings over Nipsco's price month to month on a variable rate. They say "Try it for 6 months and we'll show you how much you can save. What they do not say is that is a teaser rate for 2 months then, in my case, the rates went to 218%, 247% and 271% of Nipsco's rates in the last 3 months respectively.

When confronted after the 6 month period, they mention a 2 month "Guaranteed Discount Rate" then the rate goes to a rate competitive with Nipsco. When asked if 218%, 247% and 271% are competitive, they say those are their competitive rates.

When I called back the next day pretending to be a new customer asking for rates to compare, they quoted me the December and November rates both at 35.3 cents per therm and were pushing to sign me up. Nipsco's Nov. rate was .39 and Dec. rate .45 so anyone looking to compare would think it was a good deal. Next, I confronted them that I am a current customer who was charged .92cents/therm by Spark Energy verses Nipsco's .45cents for December. Only then did they say 35.3 cents was a 2 month "Guaranteed Discount Rate." I asked the current variable non-GDR which was quoted @81.4 cents/therm (180% of Nipsco's rate of .45).

I have cancelled them as a supplier. Their only recourse for me was to sign up again at a fixed rate (which was higher than Nipsco's current fixed rate).

All any consumer wants from their electricity supplier is reliable service at a fair price. It is outrageous that companies like Spark Energy appear to be misrepresenting their rates as based on the market when they are in fact much higher. This practice of overcharging for electricity appears to be a blatant violation of consumer protection laws, and Meiselman, Denlea, Packman, Carton & Eberz, P.C. is actively investigating a potential class action against Spark Energy. If you would like to discuss your legal options, please do not hesitate to contact me:

Hi Bilper - Many factors can go into why total bills go up and down throughout the year, including seasonality and usage. Spark Energy’s customer service department is always happy to review account and usage details with customers who are concerned about changes to their monthly bills, or answer any questions you may have about your pricing plan and how it works.

Either way, it appears that you may have been on a variable rate, which is subject to market influences. Please read more about this on our blog: http://www.sparkenergy.com/blog/choosing-your-electricity-plan-fixed-rate-or-variable-rate/ or let us know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks,
Eric - Spark Energy Social Media Specialist

Having only been supplied by Spark Energy for a period of one month (July 2008), I am still awaiting a final bill and the refund of any overpayment. They have ignored all email correspondence and the last communication from them was after I posted a registered letter back in November. They have had the necessary metering readings forwarded by Scottish Power, but I am still waiting. Their call centre is nothing more than an answering machine. Short of takiing them to a small claims court I am through trying to communicate with this company any more..

I was told by Sparks Energy that they would reduce my 1st two bills by 8% and then they would shop the market for the lowest price per kwh. They lied, my bill was not 8% less the 1st two months (it was less but not 8%) and then the 3rd month they charged me .1314 per kwhand BGE is .1003 per kwh! When I called their customer service they said there wasn't anything they would do, so I dropped them. However, I am still being billed by them for a month until BGE reads the meter again! I just shopped the market myself and switched to Dominion Retail which has a rate of .0919 per kwh until December 2011.

I have been spending the last 2 months trying to deal with them. They talked my 79 year old father into adding them to his traditional PG&E bill. called stating they were his energy company, etc. and they would sign him up for a 24 month discount under Sparks Energy. totally doubled his bill for no reason. pay once to pg&E and again for almost same amount to Sparks. Took months to cancel! SCAMMMMMM! I listened to the audio tape with my father and she even says yes we are your energy company. we want to save you more money!

Spark Energy Billing

I had to make payment arrangements for a bill during the summer that was more than twice my normal rate due to A/C problem. I called and made the arrangements with Crista Elda [protected]) and she suggested that I make a payment of 50% of the bill of $763.56 ($381.78) on the normal due date and then make another payment of $381.78 a couple of weeks later, I agreed to the plan. Instead Spark debited my account for the full amount $763.56 on the due date. This caused me to have over $600 in overdraft charges and late fee charges. I have called over 15 time in the last three weeks to find out what happened. I have received absolutely no returned calls and constantly get the run around. I would not ever use this company again. There are too many other good choices.
