I purchased a Sony Bravia flat screen television (model KDL40S4100) in Novermber 2008. Today, the televison stopped powering up. I contacted Sony Esupport by telephone. I advised the representative that
the tv would cut on, and a second later would shut off. The tv's standby button was flashing red. I was
instructed by the Sony support technician to unplug the TV, and the surge protector for 2 minutes. After the 2 minutes, I was instructed to plug the tv and surge protector back in, and turn on the tv. The televsion had the same result, the standby signal was flashing red. The support tecnician instructed me that the television had an internal problem, and asked when I purchased the television. I advised the techician 1 year 2months ago. I was instructed that the warranty was for 1 year, and that I would be responsible for the repairs.

It just seems odd to me that a television would just stop working in this short period of time (and after the warranty period). This tv was not the primary tv in my household, and was being used the least. I would not recommend this product to anyone, and feel that this product should be added to a recall list.

I have Sony lcd 40s4100 tv with same problem as all these other complaints, with the same problem. After opening tv for repair. We found the cable wires had lost its protective coating and bare wires were left exposed and in contact with each other. The protective coating had a powdery feeling and fell apart when touched. I would seriously advice if your picture is experience problem, take tv out of use and check wires for exposed wires without protective coating. .

NEVER AGAIN! After reporting my issues to Sony, I got this answer: we understand..., we are sorry... and please accept our offer of giving to you a refurbished TV for $599 or you can purchase new 50" and we will give you 15% discount... (oh and the best is you also have an option to purchase extended warranty!) what a joke! I did have an extended warranty, but quess what, TV broke soon after warranty was out... I swear If only I had more time on my hand I would pursue this further with an attorney. I purchased my product in '08, during which time SONY had a recall against this product! I didn't know it at the time and here I am $2000 short but definitelly DONE with Sony. SONY BEWARE! (unless 10yr extended warranty is provided for the crap they sell and don't stand by!)

Same problem here. Sony KDL-55EX-720 exhibited the two-LED blinking problem which is the diagnostic code for a "short" in the power supply. This TV is 3 months out of warranty and is less than 2 years old! Sony will never see my business again. Their products are poorly engineered and designed. I have ordered the two power supply boards (for about $80.00) from a reliable E-bay supplier (they are boards DPS-78 and APS-299). I will report back on my success or failure at repairing this miserable set.

OMG! Same problem I am experiencing. First there was a solid 3 in bar on the left side and now half the screen is black out. Sony said they are not aware of this problem. I told them on their site there were several comments listed that was exactly the same. I just looked and they remove them all. Unbelievable for such a large corporation. From everything I have read this is definitely a manufactures defect and there should have been a recall on this model. Sony doesn't want to own up to it.

I am very upset with this Sony TV. I am very disappointed. We bought this TV in 2010 and it went bad. I never expected this from Sony. You always hear Sony being the "best"..yea right. This model KDL-46s4100 went complete blank on us. Looking at all the complains from here, we made the biggest mistake of our life buying this TV..We spent $2, 500 for this so called Sony TV. We are not having Sony in our house or anyone we know. we are going to tell all our family and friends not to get Sony TV or any Sony product. Lets just say we are not pleased with your business or products!

@ The Bell Family, I just used the link and it appears to be working correctly.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=C1015142&fes=true&mdl=KDL40S4100

I am not sure why you are receiving that message. You can go to http://esupport.sony.com/US and put your model in the "Enter model number" box and click GO. Then select "Red, green or orange lights are on or blinking on the TV" from the "Errors & Messages" section.
I hope this helps,

Deficiency in service
Request for refund
Please allow me bring to your kind attention harassment, mental agony caused by supplying reconditioned defective TV - under warranty up to July 2012 and indifferent, careless, callous, evasive attitude of SONY service team towards its customers.

I purchased a SONY TV. It had defective BG2BOARD . After protracted follow-up, Sony India replaced defective TV and vide Bill No.[protected] dated 12.5.11 charged Rs.23, 632 towards repair/replacement of defective LCD.
At the time of installation itself, TV supplied by SONY vide Bill No.[protected] dated 12.5.11, it was brought to the notice of technician that there is problem in sound output. SONY INDIA. reacted that ' Itni Problem Nahin Hai' There is not much of problem. In other manner they agreed that there is problem in sound output. We were not reconciled why a new LED TV should have any problem with sound output.
We also requested SONY INDIA to please check the problem and incase TV set had some defect to replace it. There was no response from SONY.
However, instead of flaring up the matter, we consoled ourselves and reconciled with the quality of voice.
Subsequently, Newpaper reports appeared about defect in LCD TVs supplied by Sony.It seems there is manufacturing defect in all the TVs supplied by SONY. But Sony instead of accepting the defect is indulging in denial and charging/fleecing its customers towards exorbitant repair charges.
TV supplied by SONY developed same problem as that was in the old TV. Complaint complaint no.9552285 Dated 4.3.2012. followed by letter 5th March, 2012 was made. Service engineer advised that B- Board needs replacement. SONY informed that it will be repaired.
Not satisfied with repairs to a brand new TV which is giving trouble, May I request you to please intervene and take necessary action on priority to take back defective TV and refund Rs. 91, 632 at the earliest.

Bought Sony Bravia KDL40S4100 March of 09...the TV was in storage for 3 months and was not used a lot. In June of 2010 it just stopped working...no sound no picture...just green light nothing else. I am so upset about this. Like everyone else paying $1000 for a TV to last this short amount of time is terrible. I worked in a bar where they bought VIZIO flat screens plugged them in and they have been on 24/7 365 days a year for going on 8 years now. Sony needs to compensate the consumer!

I hope this comment "makes the rounds" to those of you who have posted complaints & frustrations with your SONY KDL 40" TV's. Today, Monday, October 17th, 2011 SONY has done a recall of some models of their 40" KDL models of TV's for overheating! This should have been done a LONG TIME AGO! Check out the Consumer World website newsletter with a link to the recall for particulars. Hopefully it will help some of you. My SONY TV problem is with a 46 " KDL model. Hope they will extend that recall to include it.
Good luck. Get back on the phone to SONY with whatever "ammo" the recall gives you.

I purchased SONY KDL-40S4100 in 2009. Last week it stoped working - no sound, no picture. When I contacted Sony support and Customer Relations, they told me that the TV is out of warranty and they can not support cost to get the TV repaired. Based on many reviews about, it seems repair would cost me a lot. I am very disappointed with Sony. I will not buy any Sony product in future neigher recommend anyone to buy!

If anyone is looking to sue Sony you can contact me as well, I’ll join. My e-mail is heisler_albert at yahoo.com
I bought my KDL52z5100 TV from BestBuy in november 2009, after 1 year and a half the tv start showing a shade on 3/4 of the screen when I turn it on. It would clear up after 30 min but an horizontal black line would stay permanently on the screen.
Contact Sony and they asked me to have an authorized technician from them to make an inspection and after that they’ll present me some options.
I paid over 100$ from my money for the technician to come and not even touch the TV with one finger, just used the remote control to turn it on and then fill the paper with “LCD need replacement”, cost of replacement $2700. WHAT?!
Sony called me the next day to present me the “options” who suddenly became “the option”. The wanted to offer me a tv of an discounted price. So I still making payments on this TV and they wanted me to buy another one.Very convenient offer. Next step is to contact an attorney and open a law suit.
The Uniform Commercial Code, fully adopted by most states, stipulates that most new consumer products come not only with an express warranty, but also with a so-called implied warranty of merchantability. That is an automatic, unwritten promise that your purchase will perform as commonly expected, including that it will last a reasonable amount of time given the nature of the item. In most states, implied warranties are in effect for four years, although that doesn’t necessarily mean a product must last that long. Implied warranties apply to retailers and manufacturers and may be broader than an express warranty.

My sentiments exactly goodDAD. They will help with my repairs but it will still cost me the service call plus the mileage charge for the repair man. I already paid him $95 (I think was that amount)just to have it diagnosed. I may decide that some of the sale models of any other brand will suit me just fine. Then when it gives me grief & it is just out of warantee I can send it to the recycle truck & not feel as badly as I have over my expensive SONY. Like I stated in an earlier post. I bought this SONY TV July 2008 for $1200 (sale price). Did not by the warranty because it was SONY. After 3 years, it just died on me. It powers on, with backlight on, then goes to standy and does nothing. I agree on the observation that there is a defect on this model. Sony should put this on a recall for sure or cover customer costs for the repair. I called Sony and the guy even agreed with me that it should not just have lasted 3 years for this TV. He gave me a 3rd party repair company to get an estimate. From what I see on this post, they will only offer partial of the cost, which I think I will not even bother. I am planning to open the tv myself and see if I can repair it. I can repair a computer LCD so this should not be different. Or, I can get the TOSHIBA 40in 1080P for $499 at futureshop. Goodbye Sony!

Welcome to the "Dissatisfied SONY Owners Club". I have been biding my time with SONY until I return to my seasonal home where my "DEFECTIVE SONY 46" TV is housed. SONY has offered some assisitance with the "fix it" but I am hesitating to invest a single cent into this TV. What if I spend for repairs then something else goes wrong with this "DEFECTIVE PIECE OF JUNK". I will have thrown "good money after bad" & will still have a "DEFECTIVE PIECE OF JUNK". SONY ARE YOU LISTENING?

I have a Sony KDL46NX810 and can be listed under very dissatisfied customer. I had the green blob problem with my Gran Wega. Sony offered me the Bravia for $210. We paid just under $3k for the Grand Wega thinking we had a quality unit...wrong!...We were pleased to get the Bravia at first...now the common on and off problem and likely soon to go dead. I have read complaint after complaint after complain about Sony's. We have other Sony products but will never buy another Sony product!...They have played games with us on the Bravia...Call, email, call, email, chase your tail, call, chase your tail, etc., etc. I am and will continue to do my best to tell all friends and relatives about our experience with Sony...Sony's past solid reputation is going off and dead like my Bravia!...Mike in Ohio

Idwind - I totally agree with you, everything you said. I used to be a Sony person (Sony tv, laptop, camera, dvd players, etc.). That ends! No more Sony products again (and I'm banning my family from purchasing Sony as well!). Sony used to be good. Now I think they rely too much on its brand and quality is out the window.

Don't waste your time with the so-called "Sony listens." Of course they have to look like they listen, but they just really wasted about five hours of my time over a month long period. At the end of it they offered me a low price on a 46 inch tv, rather than a 40 inch like I have. Total nonsense. Evelyn Perez I hope you are making plenty of money working at this position, because it cannot possibly be rewarding in any sense at all, just trying to put out these little fires every day by starting us off with these little lies like "we can help." I wouldn't even buy a Sony of any kind or product ever again. Not even for a reduced price. It's still not worth it.

Sony KDL40s4100 bravia tv was bought oct. 2008 and quit working about a month ago. No picture or sound, standyby light just blinks twice when its turned on. Talked to sony and got the same response that most people on here got... they aren't going to do anything about it because the warranty has expired. I can not believe that there are so many other pissed off people out there who also spent a lot of money for a tv that is clearly defective and sony is going to just ignore it. Sony sucks!

It is the same for me. I got a KDL-40S4100 40' HD LCD Sony. My family always trusted Sony quality and so ditched other cheap brands and got this one in Dec 2009. It toasted today - lasted17 months, 5 months out of warranty! I could turn power on and off - that's all. Black screen, no sound, no nothing by touching any button on remote or TV. Called Sony support. After following instruction to unplug and plug power cord and press some buttons, no avail. I was given 3 phone numbers of potential local repairers to use my own money to fix it. Never happened to me for a TV like this. My old TVs lasted for 10 years and still going. That's why I did not buy warranty beyond default 1 year manufacturer warranty. Saw so many complaints posted here on this product. It sounds like product defect. Is there a way to complain Sony to get our money back? more that $1000 only lasted 17 months. Looks like a product defect to me - it only last just out of warranty period. If consumer interest is hurt by manufacturer product defect, what option consumer can have - not like this hopeless.

To DGTMT and Idwind: I paid to have the Sony authorized technician look at my TV because Sony said that's the only way they would try to work things out with me. I considered that money I paid lost, and nothing satisfactory came out of it. Again, an important thing to remember here is that the warranty is not an issue here. A defective product (manufacturing defect) is not governed by the terms of a warranty. In legal terms, one could bring a suit for defective manufacturing within the statute of limitations. So, forget about the warranty. It's a non-issue/irrelevant. Actually, I filed a complaint with the state Attorney General, division for Consumer Protection. If we all do that, we might just be heard.

I just got off the phone with a Sony representative. I still have the same, non-functioning tv, but now I'm even more disappointed because they told me to take it to a technician and pay to have a diagnosis on it. I already know what the problem is and the amount it takes to fix it is hundreds of dollars, with no guarantee that it will solve the problem. For the rest of my long life I will buy all of my electronics from their number one competitor.

To SJ76~
The reason that Evelyn Perez revisited this complaint site today may be because I sent another e mail to Sony Listens with a link to this site. I have, like you & many others, contacted Sony numerous times concerning my SONY Bravia defective TV. My results have been the same as all the rest. "Sorry TV is out of warantee." But they offered me $200 towards a $799 quoted repair cost or I could purchase a similar TV to my dead one for $640 instead of the $750- $900 that it sells for from other sellers. My 46" TV cost about $1500 2 years ago.
I really do not have a magic answer (or any answer at all) as to what to do next. FRUSTRATED is the situation that I find myself in. So~~ I bought an 8 year old TV at an Estate sale & put my 2 year old, dead SONY in the store room for the time being. Can not afford either of the options that SONY offered to me, at this time. Good Luck with your quest!

Another thing, I doubt Sony will recall the product. I've been on the phone with 5 "cusomer relations" representatives and they insist that the product is good (based, partly, on reports they get from Sony authorized techs). I told her, who pays $800 (or even $400 in my case) to repair a TV? If there were to be a lawsuit for this, I'm sure we can get many records of all the calls Sony had received for complaints on this specific product. And I suggest that when you call you specifically ask that your complaint be of "record" (whether your problem is resolved or not). I think the best we can do is to bring our small claims in court for them to cover the full cost of repairs because the product is simply defective. There are so many online posts to support this.

My Bravia stopped working in less than 2 years and was advised that it'd cost $800 for the repairs. I spoke to Sony and tried to work out a deal that made business sense to both of us. They offered to cover for $370 of the total cost, meaning that I'd have to pay over $400 for the repairs. That makes no sense to me. I'd rather use that money to buy a new product. Sony's position is that this is the "best" it can do considering that my warranty had expired. My point to Sony (and to everyone here) is that this is NOT a warranty issue. I've researched the same KDL 40S4100 model and found there has been many, many complaints for the product after less than 2 years of usage. THIS IS A PRODUCT DEFECT ISSUE, outside of the scope of the warranty. I'm considering repairing the TV (which is what Sony wants me to do) and bringing a case to a small claims court for Sony to pay for the full cost of repairs.
