Our 5 year old Kenmore Elite Electric Range (model 790.9911) caught fire last night and we were very fortunate to have been in the room.
I turned on one burner to heat water and turned the (convection) oven on to warm some food.

Within 2 minutes, we heard an electrical crackling buzzing sound instead of the convection oven fan noise. I immediately tried to turn off the oven and black smoke began pouring out of the back of the oven and the stove would not turn off. Within seconds, flames were shooting out of the back of the oven where the vent grill is. My husband ran to turn off the main power in the house. Fortunately the flames extinguished themselves before catching fire to the cabinets.

The fire department examined the stove and outlets and said all looked to be in order - that it was clearly an electrical fire within the stove.

The electronics of this stove were funky from the start -- the clock never worked properly, speeding up in time whenever the oven was in use. While we lived with this quirk on a $1200+ stove, we did NOT expect it to start shooting flames!

Very dangerous and disappointing.

Our Kenmore Elite caught fire while I was heating up the over. It popped behind the control panel, flames came up behind the control panel, more popping, deep black smoke came fast, more flames. I couldnt get the stove to turn off. My husband braved to pull out the range and pull out the power cord. The range locked itself and my broiler pan was inside. We couldnt get it out. Repairmen would not attempt repair. Had to get a new range. We are so glad we were in the room. It would have/could have been a much different outcome.

[protected] Kenmore Elite dual fuel gas/electric range with convection oven. Purchsed in 2005, this oven in 2018 has had 2 main problems:
1. the front left burner has been turned off yet the propane gas leaks through and almost killed my entire family. It happend just before bed time.
2. Today the oven made a loud POP! and then flames shot out and up the back . The display flickered and then our circuit breaker shutoff the oven.
I see from other posts that this is a common problem and feel fortunate to not have died from these events.

I almost lost my home last night, while cooking on my 2015 sears elite kenmore my husband heard buzzing sounds then a cracking noise then flames started shooting out from behind the stove. I am handicapped, the house was full of smoke, i have 7 cats, we all inhaled this ####, hubby got fire out with extinguisher tons of firemen and police here now i go on this page and see SO many people had the same issue. I am TIRED of being on hold with Sears. I think they need to help me here or i am going to just go right to the news. i am sure they dont care since they are going out of business but trust me they will be getting some more EXTREMLY bad news press of someone does not contact me ASAP about this. I do NOT want to even think of plugging this stove back into my wall, and now the whole box got all burned up. i have all sears [roducts i am not HAPPY that when i have an issue its impossible to reach you people. my house SMELLS like burning wires and i this is from the stove !sunset7132@aol.com

We have a model 790.[protected] Kenmore range (the 790 number meaning it was manufactured by Electrolux/Frigidaire). The clock went bad early on (still within warranty) and Saers replaced the control unit (which contains the clock as well as the stove controls). Fortunately I saved the old control unit, because shortly after the warranty expired the control board went crazy, very loudly beeping and flashing all the lights on the stove. I swapped in the old control unit (which worked except for the clock).
One night I'm standing by the stove, hear a crackling sound behind the stove and see a wisp of smoke coming out of it. I ut off the power immediately (already had one house fire here, never want to see another). I took off the back panel to see where the smoke came from. Found one connector to the control unit had burned out, the plastic had melted and the contacts had fused themselves to the control unit. So I tried to order a new control and harness. Control unit arrives no problem, but the harness is not the main harness, but is some logic cable (and it took extra time to get that, being backordered. Eventually determined the right part number, ordered that, yet Electrolux is playing a game of EVERY WEEK wilfully delaying the part availability by ANOTHER week. This is an intentional move on their part to force people to buy new units. Well, it can be certain we will NEVER buy another Electrolux/Frigidaire product, and will probably avoid Sears/Kenmore as well.

There was some smoke and a buzz when my wife turned in on last week. I pulled off back metal panel. The circuit board is smoke. It kinda worked this week. I turned it on today (the oven part) and more smoke and a buzz. Now I am getting a f-15 error.

My issue is related to Kenmore Elite Microwave. We bought the top of the line microwave for our $50, 000 new kitchen with all Kenmore Elite appliances.
It is advertised as a "stainless steel" microwave. It is now just 3 years old and the handle is all blistered and peeling. I have actually cut my fingers on the sharp edges where it is peeling...the handle is made of plastic with a coating of some sort of covering that is made to look like stainless steel! It is such as eyesore! I see online that this is a well known issue...hundreds of complaints but Sears will not do anything. repair wanted $249 just to come and look at it! Unreal! I used to love Kenmore but no more...and Sears...I can see why is its slowly drowning.

Pretty the same for us tonight: Within 2 minutes, we heard an electrical crackling buzzing sound instead of the convection oven fan noise. I immediately tried to turn off the oven and black smoke began pouring out of the back of the oven and the stove would not turn off. Within seconds, flames were shooting out of the back of the oven where the vent grill is. Turned off the main power in the house. Fortunately the flames extinguished themselves before catching fire to the cabinets.

Our Kenmore range 790 series, purchased in 2011 for $853.99, was making a very loud noise when the oven was on. I will note that we hardly EVER eat at home so in the 4 years we have had it, it has gotten very little use. I did some research and found that it was likely the cooling/exhaust fan. Purchased the part online and replaced it myself, (not a difficult process). I had put nearly the entire thing back together with just the main control panel left and noticed that the connection between the main wiring harness and the wiring harness coming from the circuit board had some dark on the sides of the plastic plugs. I looked closer and one entire section was melted and both sides had signs of burning! I never heard anything or noticed anything and it could have started on fire or burned the cabinets or worse-case burned our house down. Not looking forward to even attempting anything with Sears. We just went through some major issues with our Kenmore refrigerator in May and even though we had a Master Protection Agreement, Sears was VERY DIFFICULT to get our useless Kenmore replaced per the agreement we purchased, (except for the guy at our local store who gave stellar service given the circumstances and the several service guys Sears forced to come to our house over the course of a month knowing the refrigerator was not fixable-something about needing 4 services on record before replacing), but the people at the 1-800# were absolutely awful and rude. So now we are stuck. Wait for this range to start on fire and burn our kitchen before Sears will do anything? Nothing about me even wants to attempt to call the 1-800# I have wasted way too many hours this year already with that number. I have been a loyal Sears customer for 20 years, but these two Kenmore experiences have me saying NEVER AGAIN!

Just 2 hours ago I turned on my Kenmore oven, Model 7909661, after about 5 minutes I heard loud popping and crackling. I went into the kitchen and there were flames coming from behind the console on the stove. I immediately grabbed the hose from my sink and put the fire out. The stove was just smoking then again sparks started shooting out from the stove behind the console, the console was flashing. I called 911, when they came they took the back panel off the stove and said it was the circuit board. They took the model and serial # so they can log it into a data base. If I had gone outside or went to take a shower or what ever, this stove would have burned my house down with my son in it, who was upstairs in his room at the time. What is Sears doing about this. Are they waiting for someone to die before they take action? Why is there not a recall on this? This is serious. I will never buy another Kenmore product again.

I also have a Kenmore Elite 790.[protected] (4 years old and paid over $1000 for it) oven whose oven control board went up in flames the other day (more about this in a minute). I was baking a cake in the oven for about 10-15 minutes, when all of a sudden I heard a beeping alarm coming from the oven that game me a F10 error code. I noticed the cake was all charred, which was alarming because of the short period of time it was cooking. I tried turning off the oven, but I couldn't turn it off from the control panel. It kept beeping and the oven was extremely hot. I had to run downstairs and physically shut down the breaker to turn off the oven. After reading online that the F10 error code was a "runaway temperature", the directions stated to start up the oven after a while and try again. I followed the instructions, and the same thing happened. Putrid smell of something burning even though nothing was in the oven. I read hundreds of complaints of this same thing happening to numerous people using Kenmore ovens and all point to the oven control board malfunctioning. When I opened up the back panel, I was horrified to see the control board full of black char, with numerous contact points melted. Some of the harness connections were also completely burned. I have numerous pictures of the damage. I am glad I didn't turn the oven on again (as the unit would still heat up and operate but had no control of the temperature). From reading through the numerous posts, it sounds like Kenmore/Sears is more concerned about their bottom line than this major defect (my particular control board was made by ElectroLux). It sounds like it is more of a hassle calling up and trying to schedule an appointment than actually going out and buying a different model. What scares me is that even if they agree to fix the control board and harnesses that were all burned, what will prevent this from happening again with this product when all they are doing is replacing the same control board? I am amazed at how common of an issue this is with the Kenmore series oven. Also, one more thing I want to point out. If you read this entire blog from start to finish, I noticed that Sears used to have someone monitor this thread with the "Sears Cares" slogan back in 2011 and would try to be a good ambassador for the company. They still have people monitoring this chat, but it sounds like their response is "sorry, but we don't see a problem with your model. please call and pay to have it serviced by sears."

I Agree With All of the complaints on the Kenmore Elite 790"s mine burnt up too
I have been working on it two years off and on its an interesting problem
ive noticed no one has given the time of day or night of these occurances
after extensive testing and a sumof money ill bet all ocations happened between 5pmand 7 pm
the circuit board (timer board) is were the problem startes inthe bad part
heres the thing the line voltage comming into your house these days is less then 110 volts
more like 106-103 volts this causes high amperages thru the circiut board and poof up insmoke
i moneter my home voltage alot and almost always om worm or cold days the brown outs start and its hell on electronics

I found your email address on the internet with the 1000s or other people around the country that have had the same oven control fire problem and have informed Sears of the fire hazard so it looks like this is not a new issue
this stove was ordered new from Sears online and sent to the store in North Platte Nr

I own a Kenmore Stove. When I turned the stove on last week... it immediately sparked. My electrician looked at the stove and said flames flew out of it and it could have burnt the house down if it was not unplugged. My husband is a contractor and has used and recommended Kenmore appliances. Based upon information that I found online...this seems to be an ongoing problem with the stove. I contacted the cpsc and they said there is currently no recall. I am very disappointed in this can't believe that Sears would allow this defect and fire hazzard to continue.

Our 6 year old Kenmore 790 electric range also made a "pop" noise and began emitting acrid electrical smoke the other night. A repair person was dispatched today and we were told that the range requires $575 worth of repairs, which cannot be performed until March 10th... At that point we will have been without an oven or stove for nearly 2 weeks. I am absolutely furious that after just a little research I find that Sears has been selling a faulty piece of junk. Had I not been in the room to turn off the oven, pull it away from the wall and unplug it the stupid piece of crap could have burned down my house! I am filing a complaint with CPSC and will make sure that I spread the word everyplace I can to ensure that everyone knows that Sears is selling a lemon and passing the costs on to their customers. Not. Cool.

About 3 hours ago on [protected] I had the same issue with the control board popping, sparking, smoking! I removed the board and planned on replacing it until I read all these complaints of the same thing with the model 790...range.
I jumped online and found a good sale at best buy for a Samsung, rated 4.5 out of 5.0. Junking the Kenmore range! I also have 2 more kenmore appliances that will be junked as soon as I can to replace those as well.

I wouldn't recommend a Kenmore anything to anyone! (lucky I have a house still to sleep in tonight!)

We have the same issue as of about 3 hours ago. Luckily my wife was right there. The control box popped, sparked and blew a bunch of smoke out and the oven shut down. this was on a 790 model. I removed the control box which you can see the board in the attached picture. I (was) going to replace the control box until I read all these very bad issues. I jumped on the internet and we found a comparable Samsung model stove. Going to get one! Junking the Kenmore unit. I have Kenmore dishwasher and refrigerator as well. Those will be junked in the near future as well.

I would not recommend a Kenmore ANYTHING to anyone!

My Kenmore Electric Range model [protected] had the circuit board short out and black smoke barreled out from the back. The repair service said it may have been an electrical surge, but nothing else in the house was damaged. I had it repaired and the exact same thing happened again nine months later. A loud pop followed by black smoke. Fortunately I was home to shut off the power both times. The control panel was black and burned in both instances. There should definitely be a recall on this range.

I, too, have a Kenmore Elite model # [protected], purchased it in March 2014. I was using the stove top the other night to make soup when all of a sudden, it started making a clicking noise, the exhaust fan came on and off, oven light flashed erratically and the whole front control panel just stopped working. It now flashes an error code of F15. Thankfully, I called Sears right away and am still under warranty and will have the whole computer replaced. What I am reading here is concerning because this could have been a fire very easily. I just hope it behaves after the warranty! Sounds like a recall should be made on this oven.

Who do I contact about initiating a recall for my Kenmore electric range 790. 9661. I was baking a potato in the oven when there was a loud POP in back of the stove then smoke and sparks started flying out of the back. I quickly ran and shut off the breaker but this easily could have burned down my house. I am reading on your website and see that this has happened to more then just me. Someone could be really hurt or even die from this problem. What can be done to fix this. Do I call the consumer protection agency?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as now I am too scared to even use this very expensive appliance.

My stove caught on fire this am. Kenmore mod# 790.[protected] purchased 1/22/12. Same series of events as discribed by in the many comments above. I agree a class action suit is in order. Should I make the repairs with a new circuit board? Will to new board have the same issues? Has anyone had a satisfactory solution to this issue? Kenmore should reinburst the cost of a new stove.

Today my Kenmore Elite 40" duel fuel had electrical issues that would have ended in a fire. Fortunately I had an electrical contractor come immediately and inform me the appliance kill switch had malfunctioned and the unit was overheating. The wires were burning up and he shut off the breakes. What shocks me, is that Sears has now had years of these complaints and issues with this exact problem and the appliance is still (today) sold. No recall to make the appliance safe? At the least this is at the cost of a consumer. At worst it is blatently dangerous and puts Sears customers at risk of household fire and life. To make it more deplorable, Sears will issue a service call at the cost of the customer? This is something that must change. I am very disappointed in the Sears response.

I have the same 40" Duel Fuel range being sited throughout years of complaints registered here. I understand manufacturers have issues with models and am stunned that in a very dangerous problem this appliance has not been recalled and made safe. Fires at the least are damaging at the most cost lives.
I have contacted Sears and now have a case file number. However, shockingly I am told they have no problems on record regarding this dangerous appliance. This is neglectful on the part of the Sears Company to continue to sell this product and I feel at the least they should stand by this situation and order a recall. I will replace the dangerous range but never again will I purchase from Sears.

I own a Kenmore 790.[protected] and I am really glad I found this forum. I had my house for sale in the spring and was getting it ready to show to a prospective buyer the next day when I turned on the oven to bake something and suddenly I heard a very loud cracking noise and turned around to see flames and sparks coming out of the back right side. I quickly turned the range off and called a repair man to come out on a Saturday at a higher repair rate. He said one of the electrical panels needed to be replaced at a total repair of around $500. We decided to order the part and replace it ourselves only to spend $300 and still have the ranges not work. Come to find out the entire display and control panel had also gone out at an additional repair cost of $500. I have not had a working range since March and figured at a repair cost of $800 I should just purchase a new range but have not had the money yet. I just put a new Kenmore Dual Fuel slide-in range in layaway today but after reading all these posts about even newer models than the one I have, having the same electronic problems, I am going to cancel my layaway and choose another brand. It doesn't seem from the posts that Sears is willing to take care of these problems.

From reviews I can see nothing has changed with this oven/ stove range. Purchased this stove of Kenmore in 2011. It never heated up properly, always claimed that it was to temperature when it wasn't to temperature and things never cooked right. I could never take time off of work to wait for the technicians to arrive and finally had a day off to be able to wait an entire day as I stare at my phone for fear of missing that call. He replaced the control panel explaining that diagnostic tests were more along the lines of guessing and testing. So if it wasn't this part that I should call back again and they would send someone out. Three days later after he installs the control panel the stove was being unused and I walked past it. Must have looked at it wrong as sparks popped out of the area of the control panel. Pops and a loud boom came from the stove, followed by smoke. I quickly unplugged the unit and found after a moment the smoke cleared. The clock still worked, but after that event I was not taking any chances. Personal reasons finding a fear of fire made me feel terrified of the appliance simply being in the house. I spoke with someone via online as reception where I live is horrible. I made a mistake of the date as it appeared to be 7/28 but instead was that of 8/18/2014. Was there are problem with my scheduled date? I said "Yes I'd like it sooner." "we can not have a technician there any sooner in your area." I suggested I pack it up and deliver it to a closer location. They do not do that they stated. There was no attempt to even help, even suggest that if anyone does not have an arrival for any appointments then I could be moved up, or any attempt to help. It was simply too bad, sorry, don't know what to tell you. Then when I suggested that after wating nearly 3 weeks I'd have a new stove purchased from a different store, then she wanted to talk and tell me she was sorry and repeat again about my service date was the soonest and they did not offer anything else. I was told that a diagnostic test would be done on the stove when a tech arrived. If that were the case then the tech should have done this from the start not the guess and test and then the new control panel is more dangerous then the first! Or did it happen and I was not home!? Must have been extremely lucky then! Presently spoke with someone via facebook who at least made an attempt to have someone review the situation. I have small hopes and will be stuck waiting until 8/18, but when it comes time for a new stove.. I am unsure if I will return to Sears or their products.

Sears must not have changed anything on these stoves. Have a kenmore glass top stove with es 200/205/300 and 305 controls.. no other information on it. The oven would not get hot enough to self clean and baking a cake took nearly hour and a half. I finally had someone come to replace the control panel nearly 3 days later the control panel popped, banged and shot out balls of fire. I was standing there no cooking, no baking the stove was simply sitting idle. Luckily, I was standing there as the smoke rolled out of it I unplugged it quickly. I went online for chat and must have misread the technician arrival time period instead of 7/28/2014 it was 8/18/2014... the temptation to wheel the stove outside is strong! In fact, the bigger temptation after reading these reviews is enforced of what I said to a customer service rep. My warranty will be gone in October and honestly I think my husband and I are thinking about buying a new stove completely at an entirely different company. When I attempted to have my service to be moved up to a sooner date I was told there was nothing that they could do. I asked if I could bring it to the store and have them look at it there for a technician that was closer to that route. I couldn't bring it to the store to be looked at sooner. Nothing could be done but have to wait until 8/18 and then the technician would run diagnostic testing on it. Which there were no testing and explained to us that it is simply a guess and test scenario of what could be causing the oven not to function properly. So a new control panel was placed into the stove. I suppose for the future preparation to leave for work or outings will include to unplug the stove before we leave. I am just relieved we were home to make sure it was put out and unplug it. Even more relieved I was just thinking about using it and not using it!

Last night our kenmore, a 790 series suddenly stopped working. This morning I was trying to figure out what happened, called kenmore they said to power it off for 45 seconds. I did this, but when I turned on one of the burners I could hear this crackling sound coming from the back. I immediately turned the range off and called kenmore back. They said I would have to open an account with them in order to help further. It's not my house so I declined but I turned the breaker off in fear of an electrical fire. Sounds like after reading this thread I did the right thing. Thanks to all for sharing, had I not seen this who knows what could have happened.

I recommend you make a report with the CPSC. SEE MY NOTES ABOVE YOURS. The CPSC IS THE CONSUMER PROTECTION and SAFETY COMMISSION, A GOVERNMENT AGENCY. It only takes about 20 minutes over the phone. If you then decide to pursue (in about a week they send you a transcript of your complaint in the mail), they contact Sears and make your complaint public. I think there are some pretty ridiculous class action suits out there, but if this comes to a class action suit, count me in. I hope this isn't an example of someone having to be burned in a fire caused by a stove for Sears to resolve the problem. I don't understand why sears doesn't take care of the problem. Whatever the reason, the public is in danger because of their faulty stoves and there are multiple cases on the internet. That means there are so many more which haven't been documented. Please report your Case to the CPSC.

Same thing buzzing sparks fire ball and smoke Kenmore elite range different part serial number [protected] was told this wasn't on the recall list of c970 models from June 2001 to sept 2008. Looks like this is a different problem then the recall but we all have the same story on here about this issue but sears hasn't publicly recalled your model or my model I assume as not enough people have been hurt or reported it? Flames shooting out the back sure seem like a major malfunction to me! Luckily no one was hurt in my family but I am VERY concerned to fix this only to have it happen again and not be so lucky. I wanted to make this publicly aware as I'm not sure what else to do but tell people they are not alone in this matter perhaps we all need to stand together on this.

After contacting Sears to find they can't do anything but try and repair the stove, I placed a report with CPSC. I don't want to just repair this stove with no consideration that the same problem may happen again. Especially considering the masses of similar complaints on the internet. Sadly disappointed in sears. I wonder if they are folding? I won't buy another appliance from them.

I thought I was alone until reading these complaints. Our stove is a Kenmore 790.[protected]. Two nights ago while cooking, about twenty minutes after the oven was preheated to 350, the crackling noise and flames burst out of the back of the clock area. It started beeping and flashing F10. I turned off the breaker and it took hours for the back of the stove to cool off. Took the back off today and I see where black soot and burnt plastic is on the Oven Control Board. I always trusted Sears, seems from these complaints that they aren't so caring of their customers as they once were. Don't know what next. Just glad I was near and the kitchen didn't catch fire!

I have a 790 model that is a couple yrs old. The oven will no longer shut off so needless to say it is now unplugged before it goes up in flames. I was lucky enough to find the problem during the day while in the kitchen and not come home to my house surrounded with fire trucks. I was going to just buy the parts to fix @ $140, or have it repaired but now seeing how many similar problems there have been I don't know that I should have to. There needs to be a major recall...

My name is Penny H.
Tonight, I had just started baking some fish. I had already been cooking some rice on the stove top when the static sound happened followed by a POP then the black smoke out of the back of the oven. Electrical smelling... I went and shut off the breaker, quickly. Then I grabbed oven mitts, pulled the stove out and unplugged it. Stressful.
The oven is a Kemore Elite.
Exasperating. I hope something can be done. I also hope no one has been hurt due to these malfunctions.
