Sallie Mae Bank Student Loan Payment Changed

My monthly payments, which I agreed to because it's what I can afford, were changed by Sallie Mae. They increased my payments from $89.00/mo to $276.00/mo without my agreement after I had agreed to do direct debit. My agreement for direct debit was based on the original payments of $89.00. How the hell are they allowed to just increase my payment? Why has this country given them carte blanche to do whatever they want to do without any constraints? I cannot afford this so my only option is to again stop payments until they agree to lower them back to what I can afford...I hate these people...I hate that this government has given them power to abuse and enforce unfair policy.

Sallie Mae Bank customer servcie

I have had a number of issues with Sallie Mae. the customer service is horrible and i have been told payment dates will be changed i recorded the phone conversation since every time i get information form Sallie Mae customer service i am misinformed or something changes. the company spoke to me and my co-signer who is my father. they agreed to change my due date and even sent me a letter indicating the change. next thing i know we are getting calls saying the account is past due. i told them i have the new letter informing me of the change as well as a recorded conversation with their rep stating the date had been changed. they told me the conversation was not noted on the day in question and that they are unable to get the exact notes from that day. this is not the first time they messed up, the recently charged my checking account multiple times due to a computer error when i set up my automatic payments also. when i called they did apologize for the computer error and charging me twice but i was informed by a supervisor that there is no system in place to return funds that have been debited. i asked Sallie Mae since it was their error couldn't they just $0 out my next payment. the supervisor i spoke with said he put in the request and i would be contacted with 72 hours. that was over 3 months ago i ave written their customer service and never got a response. the company is so bad that my bank (bank of America) actually cancelled the transaction which was a duplicate of my payment because they have seen the issue before with Sallie Mae. I even have recorded calls that were taken on the same day where i call and ask for my account information including balance and then i immediately call back and get told something else. i think there is some type of fraud going one personally because the reps are untrained and unable to give accurate information. this is by far the worst lender and the worst customer service and the amount of complaints the company has online is more ant other lender in the u.s.

Sallie Mae Bank Scams

Both Argosy and Sallie Mae took my school money and Sallie Mae is charging me money for the money both the university and Sallie Mae both divided and making me pay for. I attended Argosy University from March 10, 2009 thru October 15, 2009. I was rushed in by Ben Binus. After that I never heard from him again. I was 7-10 days late in the class. It stated around March 3. The class ended May 10th, I never got my books until around May 12, 2009. This was after the class ended. While in this class. Which was to be a doctrate class. I received a literal demand I must sign up to go to Chicago to meet the professors for my residency. I go what? The residency is usually at the end of the program. Anyway I explained I could not go. I was and am an overseas teacher. The residency was like weekend class and they were insistant. But it was not but a few weeks, I had just enrolled in the Organization Management class. The professor was rude to one of the students. She had made an F and she was saying in a few words, I want to make the grade up. She was wanting to sign up with him and he had not responded, to her. And he going to giving an other F to her. I just got in the class. There I am with no books. The books never arrived until May 10, 2009 at the end of the class. In April I kept receiving correspondance to sign up for the residancy. Anyway the next class they were saying even if I took the second class I would get an F if I didn't go to the residency. Who goes to a residency at the beginning of a doctrate program. I had only read they were at the end of the doctrate program. Well, they were said the next class connected to the residency class and you must go to Chicago. It would be a week-end workshop. I explained I could not go. It was on June 4, 2009 and it ended on June 7th. I am an overseas teacher and could not go. My students would end the year and I would too, on June 11th. They needed me to ended their second grade school year and I would need to pack out my room for next year. Anyway, they university assistant said if I didn't go the workshop I would get an F in the second class. I started that class and the professor was horrible, too. My next was to started on August 2, and I had to attend a NEA convention, because I was a delegate. My books once again did not arrive for the third class. This professor great. Even with out the books I was doing research like I did the other classes. This was a very good professor. But I became ill. I had a breat cancer scare and I needed surgery. I request that the university assistant know I would need to leave the university. By this time I had had about 15 university assistants. Each you time I needed speak to them, they were always new.
When I contacted the university they said I would need to play $1800 and all the money from Sallie Mae was returned. Since leaving Argosy I felt no should attend there it was a horrible experience. I cringle when thinking about. In speaking to Sallie mae which I am paying als. But Sallie mae has me oweing 4 loans. I attended March 10 - Sept 15. But the new course would start October 15. And I corresponded with the university assistant at that time. I am so upset, because I had a dream to get my doctrate. They push me thru so fast. I was given this promissary workshops will I am telling them I wanted to pay my bill myself. And you signed all you paperwork to attend. Anyway I owe Sallie Mae
2 loans 03/12/09 original loan 4, 250.00 and an outstanding principal of 4, 668.11 with their interest rate of 6.800 and their loan program FFELP; 03/12/09 1, 149.00 the original loan amount and an outstanding principal of 1, 331.72 with an interest rate oif 6.800 and the loan Program FFELP.
Also, I owe 2 more loans 07/06/09, the original loan $4, 250.00 and an outstanding principal of 4, 693.34 with a interest rate of 6.800 and from FFELP; and a final loan of 574.00 and an outstanding principal of 664.99 and the interest rate is 6.800 and it is also a FFELP. I mean this is so scammy. I had heard about Sallie Mae. I never wanted to get involved with this company. Even though you pay them they constantly call you every day. They write you threating you letters and warning you. They have already messed up my credit. They are threating to take your medicare. I am 66 years old. If you pay them, they will still threat to ganish your money. They are horrible. I have written BBB and all the credit unions. But they have continued complain. Can President Help here?

Sallie Mae Bank Derogatory Phone Calls

I had surgery and am not back at work at my own business yet. Therefore I have no money coming into my household. Sallie Mae knows this. I found a message that started with the typical sallie mae music on my answering machine that proceeded into a derogatory message. I was called a [censored] (among other things) and told I was going to be 'sallied', whatever that means. It seemed to be physically and emotionally threatening to me. This has really upset me. Is it possible to sue them?

Sallie Mae Bank Stafford Student Loan

I have an issue with Sallie Mae that everyone needs to know about before you become a vicitim as well. I did a loan consolidation for 3% with Sallie Mae in June of 2005. After I sent in the paper work, Sallie Mae dragged their feet on the consolidation. After dragging their feet for several months Sallie Mae then stated in a 3 different letters to me that they were have problem with the consolidation due to "problem with reference" or "where having issues with reference" or "lack of references", even though these references are the same references I used to get the student loans through the FAFSA site.

First, a letter sent to me from Sallie Mae stated that I had a lack of references; I could not understand this as I provided two references on the consolidation application like the application requested. Second, another letter I received from Sallie Mae stating we are having issues with your references, so I updated them online on Sallie Mae's website, I thought things were good, I was wrong, . Latter on within a month after updating the references, Sallie Mae then called me on the phone, I again provided my name of my references with addresses to some foreign speaking person on the phone who stated she work with Sallie Mae and who I could hardly understand as well as her understanding me. I then received a third letter a few days later that stated, "We tried to contact you by phone for updated references but were unable to reach you"'. WTF, I just provided this non-English speaking representative at Sallie Mae with all the reference information, what gives. I thought this was some kind of mistake, since it came a couple days after the phone call, so I ignored it? I heard nothing more after this from Sallie Mae.

Any how, after 180 days of being out of school the loan repayment begins. Well I found out on the first payment that the interest rate was at 7.14% not at 3%. I contacted Sallie Mae over and over without any success of getting this issue taken care of. I then threaten Sallie Mae that I would withhold payment if this was not taken care of right away and that I was entitled to do this under federal law (Fair Credit Reporting Act). Sallie Mae wrote back promising to correct the issue. Next month nothing happened, so I withheld payment and contacted Sallie Mae again and offered to pay what I actually owed. Sallie Mae refused to accept the money I actually owed. After this the problems started, I had to sent certified letters and e-mails (near a 100 e-mails) to Sallie Mae, this went on back and forth on the consolidation issue and Sallie Mae did not want to talk about it anymore but they did say they did nothing wrong. I was getting nowhere with these idiots. Then after a few months of back and forth e-mails, Sallie Mae took the position that I had defaulted on the loan and sent the collection agencies after me. Eventually, after a year and half of fighting back and forth with Sallie Mae and the many collection agencies, Sallie Mae turned the account over to NSLP as a defaulted loan. Sallie Mae never disclosed to any of the collection agencies or National Student Loan Program that I was disputing this loan because of the interest rate, Sallie Mae stated that it was an uncollectable debt and I had defaulted on the loan.

I let NSLP know what was going and I let the Department of Education know as well. Both stated that they would review the case, but the Department of Education dragged their feet as well; way past the time limit that was establish to answer my complaint, only after I complained about them missing the deadline to respond, did they answer my complaint unfavorably. NSLP stated they would review the complaint, but never followed up at all, I still am waiting on the court review they promised. In 2009, NSLP did a treasury off on my income taxes for 1500.00 and then told the credit bureaus that I owed $80, 000.00 when in fact my loans where less than $14, 000. I have asked the credit bureaus to remove this information and I provided proof. Two of the credit bureaus remove the extra money above the $14, 000 but Experian did not and has refused to remove it. This ended up causing me problems with my job as I need to hold a security clearance to keep my job. DOD seen this in my credit file and has held up my clearance (not denying it or approving it). Well of course my employer, hire someone else and gave me until this October 2012 to resolve it or be laid off.

So, I contacted Senator Murray, Congressman Adams, and Attorney General McKenna’s office to get them involved and help resolve this issue, both legislators and Attorney General wrote letters to Salle Mae and Sallie Mae denied any wrong doing. I then provided written copies of the correspondences between Sallie Mae and I showing that Sallie Mae offered to correct the issue. Neither legislator, done a follow up and has done little to nothing to help out so far. Attorney General McKenna did the most foot work, but stated that their hands are tied and I would need to sue.

As of today, nothing has been done about Sallie Mae or the National Student Loan Program. Both, Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program are free to screw my credit up and obviously do have to follow federal law. Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program are free to put anything they want on your credit record and Credit Bureau Experian does not verify anything that these two criminal companies report even if you provide the documentation that proves different, like I submitted to Experian. I have been forced get an attorney and file a lawsuit for damages as both Sallie Mae and NSLP are denying they have done anything wrong.

I do feel for all of you out there who are dealing with Sallie Mae or National Student Loan Program. My advice for others facing similar issues is to get yourself an attorney before it’s too late and it causes other problems like losing your job, loss of your income tax return check, or garnishment. My suggestion is to contact an attorney who does consumer protection law or something similar. As for anyone considering going to school and getting a loan, my advice is don’t deal with Sallie Mae or you will be sorry. You have been warned!

Right now I'm faced with losing my job here soon as I have been having issues getting a security clearance, because of the fraud and false credit reporting being committed by Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program (NSLP). Sallie Mae currently has a class action lawsuits pending against them in the 9th district Federal court for phone harassment and robo calls. Other lawsuits are also pending as well as an investigation, so if you own stock in this company, I would think twice about dumping the stock before you get burned on this. I hope this helps anyone that needs the help.

Sallie Mae Bank I want them to stop harassing me

I have been receiving calls from Sallie Mae about a student loan. They say I have a private loan with them, yet I never signed for a private loan. I get about a dozen or more calls a day, 7 days a week. I keep telling them I don’t have a private loan with them. I have asked for a copy of the paperwork, showing I agreed to this loan. They say they will send it, yet they never do. All they send is a letter saying I have to pay in full.

I have never received a bill for this loan. I just started getting calls one day. I have federal loans through their company, but they are all .consolidated with direct loans. I will answer one phone call from Sallie Mae, and speak to someone, and they tape the calls. I tell them I don’t have a private loan with them, and they start in about me having to pay. I request proof and they get upset. I have requested proof many of times from them. Before I found out my loans with them were consolidated and removed from Sallie Mae, I tried to make a payment, and they called and told me I needed to pay more. I then found out that my loans were removed and consolidated, so I canceled my payment.

I told them I thought that was on my unsub and sub loans. If I speak to someone, no sooner do I hang up, when they call right back. It’s come to me blocking their calls, and they call with a different number. I have been screamed at, harassed, and even received calls on Sunday. I will get calls from 7am to 10pm, 7 days a week. I have worked in collections. They violate the collection laws. They leave detailed messages on my voice mail, they make calls past the time they are allowed to, they call on Sundays, knowing they are not allowed to.

I want this to stop. I don’t owe them any money. I want them to stop harassing me.

Sallie Mae Bank Repayment plan

I was enrolled into a program at the new year and just a few days ago they tell me it was an "error" and say I am 6 months behind and they will default! I am trying to pay my debt and eat still eat is all.

I am severely underemployed--(I have my foot in the door with a decent employer, but its only partime at this point)looking for more work and can't afford much---at this point anything over the $50.00 month graduated payment program I thought I was in will eat into my grocery money (and I'm already living on ramen and peanut butter)or gas money (there isnt a well established transit system where I live or work).

Sallie Mae says I have used all my forbearnce and deferment but I just didnt think I'd be in this situation with over 25, 000.00 in private loans breathing down my neck.

I just need a helping hand in this rough patch--I am not trying to duck out of the Loan.

I also filed a complaint with the CFPB http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ last month but that will take time so I am at a loss--what can I do?

I have had this company hovering around me since 2004---wish I had never gone to culinary school...

Sallie Mae Bank Sallie Mae

For the last Year I have had nothing but problems with Sallie Mae. A year ago I filed my taxes and was supposed to get $5061. On February 11, 2011 I received a letter from the Department of the Treasury Stating that Sallie got all $5, 061 of my taxes. A few moths later I received a letter from Sallie Mae Stating that I owe them 11, 199 that I have not made one payment to them. I wrote letter after letter Stating that they got all of my tax return so why wont they accept that as a payment. I get another letter from them stating that I have never made a payment to them which is a lie I got the letter from the IRS stating they did so I to BBB and made a complaint against them. They finally called me back and I received a letter from Sallie Mae Stating they would not take my taxes anymore because they are going to look into it which is a lie. This year I filed my taxes I was supposed to get $2, 019. Well that did not Happened I got another letter from the IRS Stating that all $2, 019 will be going to Sallie Mae. So they got a total of $7, 080. I want to know why they can keep taking my money and then turn around stating They have never received a payment. Why do they have the right to keep sending me a bill when they got their money? This is not right! Either someone is a thief and taking the money for themselves or they are trying to rip me off. What am I supposed to do live the rest of my life while Sallie Mae takes my Taxes every year for the rest of my life? It has been a year this has been going on and it continues to go on. This should have already been resolved yet I am still sitting here waiting and they keep bullying me and trying to get money from me that they already got. I am asking anyone and everyone to please help me with this, I am afraid Sallie Mae is trying to rip me off and still my money.

Sallie Mae Bank Con Artists/Useless &customer service&

NEVER EVER get a loan through Sallie Mae, TG, or any other such agency! They will rape you, your credit, and your wallet! Ive been trying to get some options on a school loan Ive had for some time, and TG just keeps lieing to me, sending me letters telling me they want to "help" me and "give me options", which is nothing but LIES. The few times I have called them to try and make payment arrangements, all I get are hateful "customer service" people who only say two things..."We want our money and we want it ALL NOW", or "We dont HELP people with thier loans, we just collect money". Liars, cheats, and frauds!. Thier paperwork and letters state one thing, and they speak the opposite!

Ive talked to a some lawyers about this, and they say I have to go through the states political structure to get anything done. So, Ive contacted some state politicians about this, and I was told that you NEVER want to have ANYTHING to do with Sallie Mae or Texas Guarantee...they are nothing but ripoff artists! They will LIE to you to get you to sign anything for them to give you a loan...then they will charge you astronomical charges for it, which they DONT tell you about, and if you have problems paying the loan after school, they will NOT help you at all...in fact they will try and get you to sign up for their other "programs" which add on hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees to your loan!

And if a politician calls a business corrupt, then it must be horredously corrupt for any kind of politician to say that!

According to the politicians, you are better off getting a bank loan, or some other kind of loan, because if anything happens and you can pay back your loan or you have problems with your loan through Sallie Mae or TG, then you are SCREWED! They have highly paid corrupt lawyers to get them out of anything.

Be warned! Stay away!

Sallie Mae Bank Sallie Mae Is Horrible

I originally had taken out 2 school loans through Sallie Mae. All my other loans were through the government, which somehow Sallie Mae ended up picking up those. I end up graduating and getting my Associates degree and the 6 month period went by and my first payment was due. I paid it online and at this point I didn't have any problems.

A month later I decided I wanted to go back to school to get another degree that went along with my first one, so I went to the same school and got registered and got all my financial aid set up. I was told then, that I didn't have to make any more payments until 6 months after I graduated. So I made the last payment and then started classes again in a couple weeks after registering.

A month later when the semester started, that's when all the calls started. The first time I spoke to a rep who said that I missed my payment and was hit with a $50 late fee and that if I didn't pay they were going to report me to the credit bureaus and that I would never be able to get a home/car. I informed her that I was enrolled in school and that I shouldn't have to be making any payments. She told me she had no records of this and to have my school send the forms over proving I was in school. So I did just that. And the calls kept coming.

I would get 5-10 calls a day from Sallie Mae, and then they sent my information to a debt collector which they would call me 5-10 times a day too. Most of the time (which I found very ironic) they would call me AS I WAS SITTING IN CLASS. Went back down to financial aid who ended up sending the forms over 5 more times.

The calls continued until almost the end of the semester when FINALLY they sent a letter saying that I was granted the 'in school deferment'. Finally thought that this was all taken care of but no.

I have now started my next semester and the calls have started yet again. They claim that I am not in school, that I am delinquent on 3 months of payments and that they've reported it to the credit bureau. My school sent the forms over yet again, and yet again, Sallie Mae keeps claiming I'm not in school even though they just picked up my loan for this semester.

These people are incompetent to the point where they shouldn't even be doing business. Their customer service reps are rude, and threaten you while you're on the phone with them. Because of Sallie Mae, my credit is destroyed, even though I did what I was supposed to.

DO NOT go through Sallie Mae. They are horrible. They suck and they should NOT be doing any type of business.

Sallie Mae Bank They are terrible... go else where!!

I recently finished school and was having some issues making the payments. They would not work with me what so ever. Therefore I got behind by one payment. I started receiving 10 to 15 harassing calls a day from them. I tried to get a deferment and/or a forbearance with no luck! I post dated a payment which the lady told me would bring every loan current ( I have 2 different private loans with them). Well here it is two days after the payment was due and they applied to payment to one of the two loans and they are calling ten to fifteen times a day. I call, and raised absolute hell with them, actually got hung up on twice...

My advice use someone other that these [censored]es for any private loan needs!

I promise to pay to ED all loan amounts disbursed under the terms of this MPN, plus interest and other charges and fees that may become due as provided in this MPN. The terms of this Application and Master Promissory Note (MPN) will be interpreted in accordance with the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (20. U.S.C. 1070 et seq.), the U.S. Department of Education's (ED's) regulations, as they may be amended in accordance with their effective date, and other applicable federal laws and regulations (collectively referred to as the "Act"). I must repay the full amount of the loans made under this MPN, plus accrued interest. I will repay each loan in monthly installments during a repayment period that begins on the day immediately following my 6-month grace period on that loan. Payments made by me or on my behalf will be applied first to late charges and collection costs that are due, then to interest that has not been paid, and finally to the principal amount of the loan, except during periods of repayment under an Income-Based Repayment Plan, when payments will be applied first to interest that is due, then to fees that are due, and then to the principal amount.
ED will provide me with a choice of repayment plans. Information on these repayment plans is included in the Borrower's Rights and Responsibilities Statement. If I am unable to make my scheduled loan payments, ED may allow me to temporarily stop making payments, reduce my payment amount, or extend the time for making payments, as long as I intend to repay my loan. Allowing me to temporarily delay or reduce loan payments is called forbearance. We may give you a forbearance if you are temporarily unable to make your scheduled loan payments for reasons including, but not limited to, financial hardship and illness. You are responsible for paying the interest on both Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans during a period of forbearance.
ED may adjust payment dates on my loans or may grant me forbearance to eliminate a delinquency that remains even though I am making scheduled installment payments.
I may prepay all or any part of the unpaid balance on my loans at any time without penalty. If I do not specify which loans I am prepaying, ED will determine how to apply the prepayment in accordance with the Act.  You must make payments on your loan even if you do not receive a bill or repayment notice. Billing information is sent to you as a convenience, and you are obligated to make payments even if you do not receive a notice or bill. Except as provided below for certain military borrowers, we charge interest on a Direct Unsubsidized Loan during all periods (starting on the day your loan is paid out). This includes periods while you are enrolled in school at least half time, during your grace period, and during deferment and forbearance periods. Therefore, you will pay more interest on a Direct Unsubsidized Loan than on a Direct Subsidized Loan.
If you do not pay the interest as it is charged on either type of loan, we will add it to the unpaid principal amount of your loan. This is called "capitalization." Capitalization increases the unpaid principal balance of your loan, and we will then charge interest on the increased principal amount.

There are very important differences between government loans and private loans. If you take out a private loan, you will not be eligible for the same types of discharge, deferment and forbearance options that are available for federal loans.  However, some private lenders are now offering limited discharge options for private loan borrowers.  Sallie Mae, for example, has announced a disability discharge for Smart Option Student Loans.  The company will also forgive any unpaid balance if a primary borrower dies.    Wells Fargo announced a similar program in December 2010.  Some private student lenders also offer deferments and forbearances, but these vary by program.  Read your loan contract very carefully to learn about your private loan’s particular terms, conditions, benefits, rates, fees, and penalties. Private lenders do have to honor any promises they make about terms and benefits.

If you stop being a lowlife deadbeat and pay your debt back in full and on time, you wouldn't of had this problem now, would you? You signed the agreement and now are shirking your responsiblity. They should harrass you nonstop until you pay up. It's time to stop being a little baby and grow up, and pay up.

Sallie Mae Bank Fraud

Sallie Mae tells you all the right things when you are in need of student loans but after graduation is a completely different story. Do not, I repeat, do not sign with Sallie Mae. Their payback is extremely high and they will not work with you. It's a horrible company that feeds on low income students. Horrible place.

I am a single mother of a 4 year old. No other source of income. I work full time at a decent salary. I shell out over $2500 in bills and daycare a month and for some reason they feel that paying $345 a month is feasible. In what world is that feasible?! I have fought to have them lower my rates and every time I get a phone call they say, we are here to help you but to find that once you are on the phone they in fact do not help but instead tac on more fees. Save yourselves a lot of time and money and look for a different source. My sister is in the same place and no help. Is extremely sad what they can get a way with.

I have a student loan with Sallie Mae. I gave them the authorization to withdraw the monthly payments from my checking account. They were not satisfied. I received a call from them out of the blew indicating that I was in default. I said to myself that this could not be because my bank statements do not reflect that, only to discover that they sold some of the student loan to Sallie Mae Education, so now I have two monthly payments instead of one. They have my personal email address and home address; I never received any notice regarding the change. After reading various comments, it is clear that they just wanted me to default on the loan they sold to Sallie Mae Education (they are on the same site), so that way they can increase my interest rate. What a fraudulent business scheme. Shame on you Sallie Mae! I have a son who will be entering college soon and I will make sure that he doesn't get a loan from Sallie Mae. That company is truly a scammer.

Sallie Mae is handling funds like the mortgage companies did.

Sallie Mae has interest bearing accounts with their "private loans" sections. Payments go towards interest which keeps adding up, so the payments are never-ending.
Sallie Mae does NOT provide accurate percent rates on their loans. In writing, 4%, on payment %8.5, and no rate reduction possible.
Previous parent plus loans already in extended payment plan at 4%.
Student loans by children include "private loans" which are interest bearing for Sallie Mae.
Sallie Mae is supposed to be low-interest rate for both parents and students, extended payment plans for all
loans, remove the "private loan" interest bearing accounts and put them in low interest market.
I asked for long-term unemployment deferment form, twice got the economic hardship form, filled out, and got the notice from Sallie Mae that it was refused. I do not have two recent pay stubs due to being long-term unemployed.
Sallie Mae's lack of customer service extends to the total of three year deferment with payment for the deferment. Not helpful, if no money coming in, then no money is available to pay the cost.
Sallie Mae is a company out of control and the government put the loans for education with this company.

A formal congressional inquiry has been requested to get this problem resolved.
If someone has other suggestions, please let everyone know.

Yeah, sounds like them...they aren't interested in you paying less. They want as much money out of you as fast as they can get it, and they don't care if you can afford to pay them or not. For all they care, you can live in a box on the street eating bread crusts out of a dumpster. They will still want their $X00 a month.

I agree - don't get loans from them ever. They prey upon students with big dreams who need money and they will gladly give someone $100, 000, then proceed to financially rape them. You could pay them a lump sum to cover your entire balance - they'd still find something to charge you with. Like saying you didn't pay five cents on one loan...they tell you about it ten years later and due to the interest, you now owe them $7000.

If they're going to be jerks, be a jerk back. Ask if they will work with you and lower your payment. If they refuse, TELL them what you will pay them each month and that they better learn to like it. Talk to your boss about paycheck garnishment and see if it can be avoided because they will do that. Withdraw money from your bank because they will freeze your accounts or empty them (apparently this is legal). This isn't guaranteed to work, but if they refuse to figure something out that will work for you, you may have to take matters into your own hands to prevent them from simply taking your money.

That's why I would never suggest interest-only payments - interest basically goes up all the time and your balance pretty much stays the same despite you paying. And you can't tell them to apply payments to ONLY the loans - they'll apply it to the interest first and whatever is left over will go toward the loan itself. This is why you might pay $500 a month for ten years and you balance might never move.

All my private loans with Sallie Mae had different interest rates - usually between 4% and 13%. They won't let you consolidate the private loans either. In short, they don't care about you or what you are going through in your life and how it could affect your ability to make payments. If you're late paying, they tack on late fees and tattle to credit companies. This screws with your credit and makes it harder for you to get a job. What is the purpose of ruining a borrower's chance at getting a job if these people want to be paid? I honestly think they pride themselves on driving everyone into poverty and then harassing them. They will threaten to take your stuff, but I have honestly never heard of them actually doing that. So if you don't mind your credit being wrecked and you don't have a car or house they could possibly take, I would say don't even pay them. Going into default is not fun, but if it's what you have to do in order to live, I would say do it. I would never encourage this lightly either - they are just that horrible that there is really no way to strike a good middle ground between them and you.

If they can't be bothered to even try to work with its customers, then clearly they must not want to be paid too badly.

I am battling with Sallie Mae as we speak. They have a new President, Paul Thome. I have paid them over $27, 000 since 2001 and was in deferrement for a while. My overall balance is actually $2, 000 higher than it was in 2001 and they took $27, 000 of mine! The woman said that over $20, 000 went to interest and that's just what happens. WTF? I am a working mother of 3 and so digusted!

I have been battling with this company since i have graduated from college. I am currently in grad school and my loans should be deferred. However, they continute to take my deferred status off of my account every month and it forces my account into delinquency.I am totally fed up and i have no other option but to begin going to the media and searching for a lawyer who will handle my case.

I recomend that anyone involved with Salie Mae take a look at these websites:

http://www.studentloanjustice.org/

http://www.studentloanborrowerassistance.org/

One of them explains what happened to allow an altogther evil organization to gain so much power. The other one gives you an explaination of the things you can do if you are a victim of this blatently criminal organization. I wish I could say there's encouragment here, but there isn't. The best thing to do is NOT to use Sallie Mae. They are exempt from consumer protection laws and it is illegal for any other lending institute to compete with them. So once you have a loan with Sallie Mae, you can NEVER refinance with someone else. Just use credit cards to pay for school, then file bankruptcy. It is cheaper, faster and safer than using Sallie Mae. Or, be a resident of California where there is no tuition in their state schools.

I also strongly recomend that anyone who has their lives destroyed by this company to PLEASE KILL LORD ALBERT and any other Sallie Mae executives that you can. Unfortunatly, this may be the only way to stop these demons. I personally am not ready to go that far yet. My life is still intact (for now). We are up against a criminal organization that is above the law. In the old days, that meant it was time for the poeple to rise up and fix the problem with a proper public hanging. I can say, if these people meet a violent end, I will sleep like a baby KNOWING THE RIGHT THING WAS DONE.

Sallie Mae Bank Fees for forbearance, no help from customer service

Sallie Mae is terrible--all of the agents with whom I spoke C40169, C40256, etc. told me that they did not have a designated customer service brach. Well, I checked the BBB wesite, and yes, Sallie Mae does have a Customer Adovcate Unit.

Here is the information:

Ms. Kelly Mahoney
Customer Advocate Unit
P.O. Box 4200
Wilkes Barre, PA 18773

[protected]

I suggest that you get all of your ducks in a row before you call them: 1. get a sallie mae agent number for everyone with whom you speak, 2. document each converstation and the outcome of the converstation noting the agent # who gave you the information, 3. Send the Customer Adovate Unit a detailed letter outlining this documentation and your concerns, 4. Make sure you send the letter directly to Kelly Mohoney with, and this part is crucial, USPS restricted delivery mail (this ensures Kelly Mahoney receives and signs for your letter--and you receive documentation from the US Postal Service). Also, I think it may be a criminal offence if Sallie Mae declines your letter.

I have been strugging with Sallie Mae for three months and this is the only course of action that works. Yes, it is time consuming, but I am convinced it is one of the only ways to resolve your issues unless you seek help from an outside source.

I lost my job and I am trying to apply for forbearance until I get another job. I don't have money to pay. Sallie Mae are asking me to pay $150.00, so they can postpone my payments for 3 months. I asked to speak to supervisor, of corporate office. I was told that I am not allowed to contact corporate office and they don't have a number for them. I was told that corporate office doesn't deal with people like me.
I wanted to reach english speaking representative, but I am getting those people with horrible accents and phony names. I am not sure if they are Indians or some other eastern country. I did not get any help from customer service.

I have another private loan, who helped me to go on forbearance without any fees for 6 months or until I get the job. Sallie Mae are ripping people off. Blood suckers. How is it possible that organisation doesn't have corporate managet to talk to? And why Sallie Mae doesn't want to help people to pay off their loans? All I asked for was to give me a couple of months. I want to deal with it myself. I have cosigners and I don't want them to get in trouble because of me.

Sallie Mae Bank Crooked Practices

Ah, college. If I knew you were going to cost me so much in the long run I just would have picked up a book and started self teaching.
I came out of school owing Sallie Mae around $80, 000 and after I got a job I had to live at home since about 90% of my income was going to loans. It didn't take long before Sallie Mae started finding ways to mess with me. The way they got me was that my monthly payment days kept skipping around. Not a regular amount of skipping around but the instance that got me was my loan was due on the 29th one month and then on the 17th the next month. I called them to tell that because of the short time period I would not be able to make another payment so soon. "Well, if you miss the payment your interest rate will go up." At that time I think my payment was $70 dollars a month. Which was $20 more than my promissory $50 a month when I signed up for the loans, but I figured I was paying it off faster.

Well I missed that date and my interest rate went from 2.5% to 17.00%. Well next month rolled around and of course I couldn't pay the now $1, 100 monthly payment they were asking of me. Especially since according to the date I had 3 weeks to pay it. I still had a crap job and there was no way. I tried to consolidate my 11 different loans, but they weren't consolidating. They did let me transfer $40, 000 out to Direct Loans at 4% (awesome). And after about three months of not being able to pay they settled with me and locked my payment dates to the 14th and lowered my interest rate to 7.25%. I'm guessing this was so I did not complain so much. This took about 14hrs of sitting on the phone to accomplish total. And there were several harassing phone calls. One customer service rep even called me an idiot for borrowing so much money when I couldn't pay it back. And yes, once the collection agency calls started I had people calling my house claiming to be old girlfriends or distant relatives, advising me to call and talk to them. I'm sorry if I don't want to talk to you 14 times a day.

I have always found it funny that if Sallie Mae has to call me, I get someone who speaks clear English and has a nasty demeanor, but if I call them I get someone nice and kind but speaks such horrible English I can't get anything accomplished with them. It's the most frustrating experience with customer service that I have ever had.

Today I'm complaining because for the last 4 months Sallie Mae has been overcharging me, on top of the regular nickel and diming me that goes on. I have one loan that is $9016.08 and an interest rate of 7.25%. Let's do the math here. 9016.08*.0725/12 = $54.48 for a month. They are charging me $90.08 this month. Which means another 2 hour phone call is ahead of me. Plus they've charged me two late fees on this because I have 1) missed to pay it, because my bill shot up $30 without warning and my auto withdrawal didn't cover it (which was fixed, not!) 2.) because it was fixed, they told me the amount I had to pay for next month over the phone, and then it was not fixed when I received my next lay bill. In four months Sallie Mae has stolen at least $190 from me. And there has been zero threat of rising my interest rate, which I thought would be their first trick again.

This has caused me take a closer look at my bills. Despite always paying over my interest by $100 a month, sometimes my balance goes up. How? This is day 4 of trying to get this figured out. 8 hours on the phone with them, and I have made zero progress.

I hope Sallie Mae gets no new clients and goes out of business. FAST. They are crooked, and are the seediest of companies that I have ever had to deal with. I have so many more complaints about them, but I think my point is made. It's horrible. It's an absolute atrocity . Stay as far away from them as you can. I would pay 10% interest on my loans if it meant not giving Sallie Mae another cent.

Holy hell, are you me? I swear this sounds just like me...graduated with almost $80K in debt, told the song and dance about $50 payments, sold to Direct Loans (sadly, only $21K could go). I guess you could say I had a crap job too...not a "go to work" kind of job, but freelancing. If I made more than $2K a year, I was lucky. Living in a small town with no jobs sucks a LOT, and Sallie Mae and their damn greediness is going to ensure I can never leave this town, never live on my own, probably never be able to work anything but under the table, never buy a house, never buy a car. They've screwed me and so many other people over. How they expected me to pay almost $600 a month when I made $1200 one year is beyond me. Yeah, I'll just go out to my money tree in the backyard and get some fresh hundreds for them.

And they won't work with you at all because they don't want you to take longer to pay them - heaven forbid. They want their money right this second. I thought by going to college, I'd be a little better off having marketable skills. I'm so much worse off now that I've gone there and borrowed from Sallie Mae. If I could give back my degree to forgive the debt, I would in a second. Personally, my degree came from a crappy and overpriced school and it didn't teach me anything useful.

I'd love to say just don't pay them, but they will rape you every which way financially. You go to school to better yourself and then they basically ruin your life and make you poor. People who deal with Sallie Mae will never have a life savings and with what I'm hearing about Social Security running out, no one will be able to retire ever. I'm sorry you've fallen into their trap as well.

Sallie Mae Bank WORST customer service experience EVER

This was the WORST customer service experience I have ever come across. I was looking to apply for a student loan and decided to call to do the application because I had a few questions. The first lady (unfortunately I she never provided her name) was rude and kept cutting me off every time I tried to ask a question. Halfway through the application I was fed up with it so I politely asked her if another representative could finish my application. She got very quiet and asked, "Why?" I simply told her I would just prefer to finish up my application with another representative. She then got very quiet and HUNG UP ON ME! I was furious! I then called back to try and put in a complaint and finish my application and got a gentleman on the line. He was nice, however I could clearly tell he kept talking to someone else in his office. He would mute his line for 10 seconds at a time and when he would un-mute it, I could hear them laughing. I cannot be certain of course, but I have a feeling he was laughing about me with the previous representative who hung up on me. He ran me around in circles with the application and kept asking me the same questions over and over and over. I was so fed up with it I told him I would do it later. Based on this experience though, I will never do business with Sallie Mae, EVER.

Sallie Mae Smart Options are about the same as all the bad mortgage loans that were out there. The interest rate is higher, the terms are short and there are less/no options if you run into financial hardship. The customer service reps and managers will boldly lie to your face that there is nothing they can do. Keep in mind that the interest only payment during school and the 6 months after is going to jump dramatically. My son has two of these loans, the payment on one was $25 during school and went up to $330 six months after and that is only one loan. Parents BEWARE! Sallie Mae's helpful advice was to have Mom and Dad foot the bill.

I have spent hours on the phone with at least 5 different Sallie Mae representatives. Each of them was rude and obnoxious, None of them knew ANYTHING. And all of them lied about the deferment policies of Sallie Mae. Two of the five hung up on me during the course of the covnersation because they didn't like the fact that I asked them to explain their 'policy' which was absolutely in conflict with the signed loan documents.. In other words, they were committing fraud, . It's too late now to undo what is done, but my words of advice to anyone looking to get a student loan...STAY CLEAR OF SALLIE MAE! They practice fradulent business activities and should be shut down. And if they care to try to contest what I am saying here and accuse me of slandering them, I will merely produce the phone conversations that I recorded to document my horrendous experiences.

Sallie Mae Bank Liars and Have a Monopoly

Sallie Mae is a monopoly and is behaving like the mafia and The Department of Education and the Office of the Ombudsman are absolutely worthless in helping us as students.

Sallie Mae is so corrupt and evil that the federal government should put them out of business and put the entire corporate office in federal jail and make them work everyday to pay on every student's loans that they made and service until they are no longer alive as an ATTEMPT at punishment.

They are the most incompetent evil, lying corrupt company EVER in the United States of America.

Worse yet is they were smacked down from being able to lend and now they SERVICE every loan and YOU AS THE STUDENT HAVE TO DO BUSINESS WITH THEM IN A SOCIETY BASED ON CAPITALISM AND FREE CHOICE.

You used to be able to pick your lender or servicer and now you cannot.

IT IS A SCAM. the department of education does not give a [protected]@# about the students as if they did they would put Sallie Mae in jail for the amount of corruption they have perpetrated on the American student population.

FACTS:

They can CHARGE ANY FEE they want.

you cannot declare bankruptcy on a student loan as of 2005.

Sallie Mae sends me bills all the time with different amounts.

Sallie Mae outsources jobs to India and you cannot understand one thing they are saying so you give up..that is their disgusting tactic.

FACT: The ombudsman's office HAS ZERO AUTHORITY TO SMACK DOWN SALLIE MAE. do not waste your time there as they do not give a rat's ###.

FACT: Not one sitting president will put the students first by allowing us to have consumer protections in place such as capping fees, imposing a statue of limitations on debt collection for student loans, in alowing student's to pay what they can afford as even with IBR the amounts are too high in relationship to the cost of living and low pay in this wretched economy..and bankruptcy is off the table now.

Sallie Mae needs to go down and ANYONE who works for them too. How anyone with even one iota of a conscious can work for that ### company is beyond me and sleep at night. they deserve to go down the toilet with Sallie Mae as if nobody will work for those ### then they would go out of business.

The staff who work for Sallie Mae are the most rude, incompetent, ignorant and totally worthless people I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.

Call the White House and CNN and post on Twitter and ask for an investigation into the corrupt pile of crap that is Sallie Mae and DEMAND consumer protections be put in pace for students for student loans.

NEVER EVER TAKE OUT A PRIVATE STUDENT LOAN ESPECIALLY WITH SALLIE MAE.

Capitalization for students who do not understand is this:

You have a balance..lets say $40, 000
Your interest "accrues" or adds up over 5 years
Your new "capitalized balance is $46, 000"
NOW Sallie mae can charge interest on that new amount.
If you can..pay interest while in deferment or throw any amount at that interest..or else your hell will be increased like you cannot believe.

Capitalization on interest on student loans should be illegal.. it is difficult enough to pay back what you owe with interest.
Where the hell is the media on this story? Where is the government to put protections and limits on fees in a LIFETIME even?
Use twitter, facebook CNN Ireport and you tube to get your story out and demand consumer protections be put back in place for student loans.

Nothing is new...subwaywalz..but what is new is that as of 2005 consumer protections were erased for students.
Cannot declare bankruptcy
No statue of limitations on collecting debt even when your 100 (7 years for every other debt)
No limit to fees you pay
If you default (loss of job sickness etc. disability) then every payment you made becomes worthless as the fees, interest and capitalization erodes that and this SHOULD NOT BE LEGAL.
use every social network tool you have to spread awareness and do not vote for anyone who has Sallie Mae money in their pocket.
I am not apathetic..please do not be either. Contact the media over and over until we have a story..

Sallie Mae sucks. period.

SUBWAYWALZ: I concur. However why nothing is "new" in general..Sallie Mae..the evil company from hell worked hard to get consumer protections erased in 2005 when they stopped bankruptcy, and students have no consumer protections from a lifetime of debt pursuit with no statue of limitations until the day YOU DIE. Credit card companies and loan sharks are jealous!

What is wrong with our country that an education creates a financial and personal noose so tight all quality of life is screwed?

I am planning on using my vote to defeat the corporate scuz who want in office who take Sallie Mae money from the lobby machine (25 on the hill) and not vote for these craptastic people.

Also..the more people inundate congress and the white house with complaints and use social networking such as Youtube, Twitter and Facebook and the CNN Ireport as tools the more chance we have as a student population to fight back.

Apathy ### pie gets people nowhere..So I report DAILY on the scuz buckets that are Sallie Mae as I AM NOT APATHETIC.

Plus if you default (loss of job disability etc.) all the progress you made on payments is lost. That should be fu@#ING illegal as hell. But the government and the media does not give a ###.

Advice to all students: Realize what capitalize means..they add UNPAID interest to your balance you originally borrowed and that is your new BALANCE and they charge you interest on that. If you can pay the interest at all..throw something at it..it will help you when you go to repay that loan.

Well, even though I owe around $30, 000 in student loans, it is a good thing that I turned down the Bachelor's Degree program at ITT Tech. Because if I did then I'll be totally sand blasted & financially murdered...REALLY! At least I have some oxygen to breathe on. I would be paying almost at the 6 figure mark. I do kinda regret going to this school, and dealing with the ruthless, hardship practices of Sallie Mae, but I AM NOT giving up. I will keep my head up and I WILL SUCCEED SOMEHOW! Talk to me.

Sallie Mae Bank Usery

My wife and I both have student loans. My original loan was $10, 000 which I paid on for several years only to find out that the interest on these loans is compounded qtrly which increases the loan. I’m now in default because I’m unemployed and we lost our home and Sallie Mae defaulted my loan because I could not come up with $1700 to bring it current and $460 per month for payments. My loan has not been sent to Texas Guaranteed who advised that I just need to pay $200 per month and my balance is now $18, 000, if no payment arrangements are made within 30 days they will add 15% to the balance for collection fees and the interest keeps accumulating. My wife had a loan for $7500 which the same issues are going on and the balance is now $33, 000. As far as I’m concerned student loans are legalized loan sharks because they are backed by the government. We wrote our congressman, John McCain, but that did not do any good. When your broke you are broke. They advised my wife that they will start wage garnishment. Go figure so they can take more of what you don’t have. If they are sued, please count me in

Sallie Mae Bank No opt out option

Sallie Mae has put this statement about the customer's telephone number at the update account information page when logged into their website:

"By providing my telephone number, I authorize Sallie Mae, Inc., its affiliates and agents to contact me at such number using any means of communication, including, but not limited to, calls placed to my cellular phone using an automated dialing device, calls using prerecorded messages and/or SMS text messages, regarding any current or future loans owned or serviced by Sallie Mae, Inc. its affiliates and agents, even if I will be charged by my service provider(s) for receiving such communications. By providing my email address, I authorize Sallie Mae and any affiliates to which it shares this email address to send me commercial messages at such email address."

Yet...there is no way to disagree or opt-out. You have to provide a telephone number. Sallie Mae is out of control in my opinion.

Sallie Mae Bank Finance fraud and abuse

Sallie Mae promised in writing, 4% interest, actual interest is 8.5% with no reduction available. No help available from any source with this issue.

Private loans for both students are paying interest with increasing balance for Sallie Mae's interest bearing accounts. The graduates are drowning deeper in debt while Sallie Mae pulls in the money for their employee and manager bonuses each year.

Sallie Mae refused to send the proper deferment form, only good for a total of three years maximum, instead sending me the economic hardship form twice, rejecting the form because I do not have documents required. Hello, I do NOT have two recent pay stubs because I am long-term unemployed.

I finally got the correct form, sent it back, received a payment due for one of the loans, and a letter stating their payment policy.

I have requested a formal congressional inquiry into Sallie Mae's fraudulent use of funds for personal gain. The students and parents who are forced to use Sallie Mae's funding for "higher" education lose in this plan.

I am thoroughly disgusted with the way Sallie Mae has ruined the low interest payment plan especially since all the loans go through them now as Department of Education wants.
