Your talking about the construction industry which non union based companies do hire people as independent contractors, especially Electricians I happen to be a Level 1 Residential Electrician in Chicago and in the suburbs. After a project is over I move on to the next job which most of the time is with a different company. You never wrote whether your talking about Commercial or Residential, the permits and regulations are different if not needed depending on the job at least that goes for the residential side. I have to supply my own equipment for most companies I have worked for. Another thing is if someone gets hurt on the job he is wide open for a law suite which would most likly change his tune about supping safety equipment and his work ethics in general. As far as taxes go its the responsibility of the Independent contractor to pay the taxes not the hiring company. The Tax thing is a extremely wide line when it comes to the construction industry especially when you have temporary help like most construction companies have nowadays. You should be complaining about how many of these companies are hiring Illegal imagrints taking away jobs from us Americans.
