I'm one of those proud employees of Ross Dress for Less. (heavy sarcasm) Everything I have read on this board I can agree with. Whether it be managers that are liars, customers that are thieves, or employees that just don't give a damn, it's all true. What people just don't seem to understand is that we are a DISCOUNT store. How you cannot realize that, I dunno, but it seems like every day a customer comes in the store wanting and expecting personal service. We aren't paid on commission people. How many times am I asked where something is a day? Too damn many that's how many. People walk in the door and ask "where is the shoe dept"? Well, open your tiny little eyes and look to the left and lo and behold! SHOES!

You will find some really, really cheap prices at Ross and this is why people will shop there. I don't see Ross going out of business anytime soon. The reason being that people will put up with a lot of stuff if they can get something they want and like for a cheap price. How many posts on here start with "Store is so dirty but, hey, they have awesome prices"?

I'm not sure why there are so many complaints on here about returns. My store will return practically anything. The only thing I have seen to be non-returnable is an item with no tag and no receipt. Yet, customers still think we are just supposed to take them back. Yeah, no tag, no receipt. I'll just make up some price and punch it into the computer and there ya go! Who really knows or cares if you bought it here? Gee, I do.

There are people that come in day in and day out and I dread it every time I see them. I know they are going to give me a hard time. It's like some people are only happy if they can take out their frustrations on some lowly peon such as a retail worker. It really seems to make them feel superior. "I let that stupid girl at customer service have it! I'm so smart and she's so dumb! I rule!"

I think the cure-all for difficult customers is to have them work at Ross for ohhh I don't know... three months. During holiday season. And for them to have to wait on people JUST LIKE THEM. Maybe there will be a bit more comprehension of what we actually deal with.

Having said that, I do agree there are employees that can be rude. I'm not trying to excuse it, but I certainly can sympathize with it. There is such a thing as being polite.
Sometimes it's hard, but it's something we all need to do, whether we are employees or customers. It's always easier to help someone with a problem if they are being polite and treating you like a human being. The ones that scream and yell are the ones that I don't want to do anything for and certainly won't go out of my way to satisfy. I'm a person. Treat me like one and I'll treat you like one. It's not difficult.

Yes, scheduling sucks at Ross. Hours suck. Pay sucks. Why do I work there? Got me. Right now, I have a job and I'm bringing in a second income for my household and that's important. I was a stay at home mom for a lot of years, so I have no experience in anything. This is where I was hired. Soon, hopefully, I'll have something I can put down on job applications and I'll get something better.

I have worked at Ross for over a year. I really enjoy it. My Ross has nice employees. Management is ok. I started in the fitting room but moved up to loss prevention. If you get the chance to do loss prevention, take it. Fitting room was hard; dealing with 4 customers at once, 32 pieces of clothing at once, running over to size bras, running back to awnser the phone, uhhg, old ladys giving you mounds of insideout moist dresses to put back, gahhh. As loss prevention you get a dollar more an hour to just stand around. I like my job. I am good to the customers. I have seen other locations that don't seem as nice but that's just how it is. All praise Ross.

I agree with Cindyqueen with her comment. 1488 your a racist [censored] bag who is ignorant beyond belief! Also 1488 such celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Winona Ryder have shoplifted & at VERY expensive jewelry stores. Why not talk about them.
1488 you have alot to learn about people & people of different ethnic backgrounds. Pick up a book & learn about different cultures. And Cindyqueen is right, I've met some really ignorant White people, really ignorant. Instead of bashing a culture PICK UP SOME BOOKS at your local library & learn a thing or too about the culture your bashing. Perhaps you'd feel better.

I work at Ross now its been about 8 months what I can state and say is that us as employees are treated very poorly first my general manager has a bad rude attitude she likes to take it on us and even customers the only time I sense that she is happy is when pay day is near and that's a fact . In the Ross I work in a lot of people got hired and a lot of people left our schedules would be missed up and our hours and very extreme sometimes we work for 3 pm to 10 pm which is really a whole day then we would have to wake up to do a 9 to 5 shift and for those 8 hour shifts added up to 16 on off days I would get called in for somebody that quit or never showed up all this hard work is done for 7.25 in the state I work in . I cant believe Ross stays open to 10 Monday thru Saturday when other stores are closed need to remind that our store no longer has security guards ive reached the point were I'm going to quit soon and they wont be hearing from me I have never felt this way towards a company before but I feel like Ross employees do a lot for little or nothing as soon as i find a new job i will no longer work for this company .

I can understand about the Ross employees not happy about their wages. To all Ross employees all I can suggest is band together & get a union started! Nothing ever gets done by doing nothing. Be proactive to get change! Now with the persons comment about customer service & how customers shouldn't expect it, to that I throughly disagree!
No one, but no one should have to put up with an employee who is sullen or in a foul mood.
Leave your personal problems at the door. Your paid to do a job & common courtesy is part of that job.
Abuse, sulleness, bad attitude etc just isn't except able people.
I tolerate some minor bad customer service...however when I'm being outright abused? That I will NOT tolerate!
I had a bad experience at a Ross Dress For Less store here in Washington State.
This was with a woman who worked the fitting room and OMG was she RUDE! she started an agruement over 2 pair of pants that I had tried on. Claims I never brought them back out to her, BUT I DID! She somehow forgot . The woman had the pants that I brought out to her piled at the bottom of her messy clothes rack.
So basically instead of properly hanging up the pants on a hanger then place them on a rack like she is supposed to, instead she just threw them any which way onto her rack!
Then due to her incompetence she brings the Nazi looking uniformed Loss Prevention Officer INTO THE FITTING ROOM to interrogate me.
I had to step back from the verbal abuse the two were dishing out to me to then retrace my steps regarding those two pair of pants because these two nitwits traumatized me.
Face it Ross employees need intensive training especially were customer service is concerned.
Stop making excuses & placing blame on the customers if you can't be bothered with helping someone then HEY, get a job where you have limited contact with the public.
And just do your job.
Stop whining like a little 2 year old toddler & grow up.
Getting substandard pay is no excuse for acting like a brat.

I work at Ross as a "Loss Prevention" security guard. You know, the guy dressed in all black standing at the front of the store supposedly greeting all the customers.

First of all, this position is nothing more than a door greeter, just like Walmart used to have. But we have to wear a black costume. We allegedly prevent theft from happening, BUT we are actually a laughing stock to all thieves. They know for a fact we cannot do a single thing, even if they load up a bag of merchandise and walk right out the door while flipping us off.

We get ripped off so bad, and the management cannot do a thing because headquarters basically says let the shoplifters do what they want. The employees are sick of it happening, and it creates a very poor morale issue at my store.

The employees are basically punished for all the shoplifting. How are we punished? By having our hours slashed to pieces. The more theft we have, the more Ross cuts hours.

Yup, the thieves steal boat loads of stuff and go and make a ton of money selling it online, and swap meets. While we get 8 -15 hrs a week and minimum wage. On top of this, many managers are burned out and mean. This all makes for unfriendly employees. Its a crappy company to work for, a sketchy place to shop at, but a haven for career criminals who want to make small fortunes selling their daily heists. Ross is basically a storage facility for criminals to come in and restock their criminal enterprises. Actual paying customers keep the lights on, and a few employees employed.

I have only been working at Ross for a short time, but I have a feeling you don't have to work more than a few days to get the jist.

I agree with you about most thing. For me though, its not the customers that are the problem. In fact, If I could just talk to the customers and not any of the other employees that would be fine. I have had 99% nice customers. They are very nice and appreciative. The only time they complain it is about the OTHER employees. They have every right to. My co workers are extremely rude ###. Its pretty unbelievable. I don't know if they are ### because they work at Ross, or if Ross only hires ###s. But it is seriously a nightmare. In my first week, every time I would ask a question they would look at me like "Why the hell are you asking me?" and if I made a mistake they would yell at me. The weird part is, this is just not one or two people. Its the majority of employees.

They are not just rude to me, but they are rude to customers. Really rude. One of them (a supervisor) made a gagging face when two kids came up to the register because they "smelled like milk". What? You are a supervisor working at the customer service desk. Get your ### together. Many customers have told me "thank you for smiling. It seems like you are the only one" I always say, "I know. Its sad huh?"

So, the supervisors are awful (other than a very minority kind ones). The management, meh. Whatever. The hours? What are these four hour shiftt getting (if) 20 hours a week, and having 100 + employees. The pay, minimum wage.

Overall, this place is a joke. The only perk is a 20% discount. Also, its character building because you learn to not give a ### about rude people and not take it personally.

I do disagree about the customers though. They are for the most part extremely nice and sympathetic.

I do work for Ross, Not enough hours, Assisstant Manager shows favoritism. New hires aren't trained well and not register ready, But they get the hours. It's summer only ceiling fan for the stockroom. Went all last winter with one heater. And you have a nerve to ask for a note, And working in the cold is why we're sick. Pay is awful. And you bust your ### for what ? The company isn't appreciative for their workers. Manager is a kiss ###. For all we do ? We should have more than 25 cents to our review . That's not including the thieves .No security . We need someone in that company who understands the workers. And take care of your workers ! Cutting hours and some have family ? Basically Ross Company doesn't care about their workers !

We have a ross where I live here in lawton. I been there once. I was looking through the jeans. They had a pair of jeans with one leg long and one short for 15.99 I never see that before. Some had grass stains others had no buttons or busted zippers. Kids running around screaming. So I looked at the shirts. I seen a shirt that said lg looked like a 3 x. I checked the t shirt itself it said medium. But was huge. Another with mustard stains. I want to know where the heck they get clothes? Good will? One shirt with a fish on it and the other with a toad. Floors where muddy and dirty. They had wires hanging from the ceiling (fire hazard) I looked at the shoes. The had fila FILA that was 1998. I picked up a what I thought was a nice pair of dress shoes the bottoms fell off. Never again would I g
o there. They have Calvin Klein underwear with ### stains. You are right they do return anything as long as u have the receipt. I see the people who go their are hoodrats on
Friday night to by a cheap outfit then return it on Monday. And wet backs after they get. Hair cut. I was nervous to try anything on because it felt like I was in someone elses closet with the mustard stains and zebra stripes. They had a line all the way to the back with one register open like Walmart. They sell nike and rebok knock offs look inside they say made in mexico. That place is a dump and unsafe...

I HAVE WORKED AT ROSS FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS NOW, HOW I PUT UP WITH IT IS BEYOND ME. I WORK AT A ROSS IN FLORIDA, AND JUST TO SAY THE LEAST PEOPLE HERE ARE DOWN RIGHT NASTY (CUSTOMERS & EMPLOYEES). I AGREE WITH EVERYONE THAT HAS MADE A COMMENT ON HERE, THAT HAS WORKED HERE AND KNOWS THE PAIN OF WORKING HERE. MANGERS ARE NOT TRUSTWORTHY AT ROSS, IF YOU LET ONE KNOW EVERYONE KNOWS. A FRIEND/CO WORKER OF MINE CALLED OFF ONE DAY AND THE NEXT WEEK THEY HAD HER HOURS TO WORK DOWN TO FIVE HOURS! THATS NOT EVEN ENOUGH GAS TO DRIVE TO THE STORE! ANOTHER INSTANCE, ROSS HIRES PEOPLE WITH CRIMINAL BACKGROUND HISTORY, THEY MAY SAY THEY DON'T BUT REALLY THEY DO (JUST DO SOME INVESTIGATING ON YOUR OWN, hint: public records). THIS GOES TO TELL YOU HOW NASTY THE CUSTOMERS ARE: NUMEROUS TIMES I HAVE BEEN WORKING A SHIFT ... KIDS/ADULTS HAVE URINATED IN THE KIDS DEPARTMENT AND ANOTHER TIME WE FOUND POOP IN THE WOMENS FITTING ROOM, SOMETIMES IT SEEMS LIKE WERE IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES! OH AND AS YOU DO STOCK WE GET SO MUCH PRODUCT AND NOT ENOUGH EQUIPMENT LIKE HARD TAGS AND HANGERS, THEY WANT US TO DO THE JOB RIGHT AND IN A QUICK FASHION FOR LOW MONEY BUT NEVER HAVE THE RIGHT THINGS TO FINISH THE JOB. PEOPLE STEAL LIKE NO TOMORROW AT ROSS AND SOME STORES HAVE AN SPS, WELL THE ONES THAT HAVE AN SPS WELL WHATS THE POINT IF U CANNOT CONFRONT THE CUSTOMER OR GO AFTER THEM AS THEY LEAVE?! WE TEND TO HIRE PEOPLE THAT DONT SPEAK ENGLISH ALSO, SO THATS ANOTHER REASON THINGS DONT GET DONE RIGHT, IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE RIGHT PUT THE SIGNS AND EVERYTHING IN EVERY LANGUAGE THAT U HAVE PEOPLE WORKING THERE, MAYBE THINGS WOULD GET DONE RIGHT.

THANKS JUST THOUGHT ID PUT MY TWO CENTS IN! ;)

I am a store manager at ROSS and have been for a little over a year. I have to say that as I read all of these comments and complaints what alarms me the most is I sympathize with most of them. My retail career as a store and district manager has spanned over about 20 years and I have never seen things anywhere else in the market or in the country like I have been able to witness in California ROSS stores. The major factors that contribute to the unhappiness for employees at ROSS are the following, 1) ROSS employees, including managers are underpaid by about 22% which in California and most other places means you have to have more than one job or roommates. 2) Corporate people make all the rules and changes based on reports and skewed feedback from test stores in ideal situations not from actually going out and working in stores and seeing what really happens. 3) We are given no hours for training at all so all of the training of new hires and retraining of seasoned employees is done in a hap hazard way. 4) Unfortunately for the customer we are given no hours to run a store appropriately, to have super fast check outs, beautiful displays or to help customers shop. Store managers and assistants just as much as part timers work in constant fear of being terminated, regardless of what you think you know. ROSS customers need to understand that we keep our prices under every one else by cutting cost, unfortunately that means lower quality service for you. The latest store I have been assigned to is more than miserable not just because of the area but because of the non stop scams that people run on us. I have no less than 3 Latino shoplifting rings that hit us daily, people constantly buying items then returning their old ones with the receipts and tags and a never ending parade of people who will nick and dirty merchandise and ask for a discount at the register. These are facts, just a warning you are always on camera even when you don't think you are (ROSS doesn't trust it's employees either). The only thing that makes this new store bearable is the few employees that are fun to work with and the occasional happy customer who calls for the manager to say some thing nice rather than waste their time complaining. I know when I am out shopping I have limited time available to me because I work a ton of hours and am usually rather busy, I value my time even 5 minutes to me is better spent sipping on a coffee or visiting with a stranger than complaining about a line or broken hanger in a discount store. No one can make every one happy all the time no matter how hard you try to please someone will always want, expect and think they are entitled to more.

My wife worked for Ross for 1 year. She received a 20% discount on items she purchased. She was with my mother and she was buying a coat. My mother wanted to purchase the coat as a Christmas present for my wife. She used her credit card and didn't think much of it. Ross accused my wife of stealing from them. I think that really sucks. They told her they have camera everywhere and can watch every move she makes. She came home crying. I told her not to worry about it. The job was ### anyway. I'm really pissed. I'm think about building a website asking people not to purchase from this company.

1488 you are so racist. I work at Ross too as a sales associate, and i'm mexican, and I can tell you most of the people caught shoplifting in my store are white, not hispanic or as you say "bean mashers" Have some respect for people of other races than your own. You can't categorize everyone of a certain race as a stereotype, we are not all the same. Also, I've had some "trailer trash" customers scream and yell at me for no reason, but do I stereotype ALL white people as being like that? NO, I do not bc I know there's good and bad in every race, and you're disgusting.

it's not about asking where the shoe department is, that's easy. It's more of "can you find me these 5 shoes in these colors and sizes and tell me how I look in them", while you have a line 20 people... people think they're the queen of england in macy's...

I cannot give out my name; but have been a Ross store employee for some time now. I have had a lot of employers in my day, but Ross Stores are full of ###. First the ###en home office cuts our houires so they can line their pockets. That is right, they cut our time and expect more work in shorter hours and that is bull ###! ### you Ross and I hope you go to hell with all of your ###! Most or all of the crap that Ross sells is damaged or left over bull ### that was sitting in some ###ing building for some time. Fraight loss or damaged bull ### that they buy for nothing and sucker people in with their bull ###. Their home office are nothing but [censored]bags, used ones by ### at that. All that Ross wants to do is ### all of their employees in the ### with all of their ###.

All I have to say is, Marry Christmas and ### you Ross in your ###. I know that I am going to hell and I shure as ### going to look your ### up when I get there.

Signed:
Your ###ing employees!

P.S. I hope that you got your ### put in jail in California for lieing to theSupriem Court Justice, and yess we all know about you getting sued for 1.5 million dollars mother###ers. ### you!

This proves a point... You are paid by Ross to do a job, and you complain when people expect you to do that job. Who cares if someone asks where the shoe department is. That is your job to help them. It does not matter if Ross is a "discount" store. For crying out load, I cannot believe your belly aching. If you don't like telling customers who pay your paychecks asking you questions, get another job where you don't deal with customers. OMG... Thisw is what is wrong with society today. Everyone wants to get paid to do nothing.

I have managed to get two of my managers fired and some how both new mangers that have come in have been even bigger [censored]es worse ###s and of course idiots. I can tell you right now Ross Could actually be a better working enviorment if the managers wernt retarted and the supervisors wernt mentaly unstable. Most ross assotiates smoke because they work at ross it is the only way you dont kill someone when your at work. So if you are a ross customer just please remember Some of us are the way we are because of rude cust's maybe liek your self so if you give us a break we will give you one we are people jsut liek you and some of us are smater then you think.

Count me in too. The theft made me sick! And it was also blatant, with no po!ice showing up after. Buyers would cuss at me and my managers. Always wanted MORE discounts and late nites cash out of the box. Good Lord. Creepy and very depressing. OmG... didn't you Associates totally get burned ringing it allnup, smiling, waiting while the jerks would stare back, Oh, wallet's in the car...Spare me. Enough of that abuse. One night a woman stood there frozen. Total wasn't even 10 bucks. She just walked right out on me. All this and worse, two years ago. "I'm done here."
