I gotta say, I'm giving Roommates.com a solid 4 stars. It's not perfect, but it's definitely helped me find a roommate twice now - once back in 2005 and again in 2007. My last roommate stuck around for a whopping 14 years before he moved out and got hitched. Now I'm back on the hunt, and I gotta say, the pickings are a little slim. I'm looking for a mature, drama-free dude to share my space with, and it's not always easy to find someone who fits the bill.

One thing I do appreciate about Roommates.com is that they don't make everyone pay to use the site. Sure, I'm shelling out $15 a month to stay on top of new listings and contact potential renters before the scammers and flakes get to them, but at least I'm not having to pay just to see who's out there. And speaking of scammers, I gotta give props to Roommates.com for having a report button and letting me block people from messaging me. It's not foolproof, but it's definitely better than nothing.

Now, I know some folks might be put off by the fact that you can only communicate with other users through the app. But honestly, that's not a big deal for me. I'm a woman, and I don't really want to give out my name and address to just anyone. Plus, I'm not really into using Facebook for this kind of thing. So the fact that I can keep things contained within the app is actually a plus in my book.

Hey guys, I just wanted to share my experience with Roommates.com. I know some people have had some negative things to say about it, but I decided to give it a try with their 3-day trial. I have to say, though, that unless you pay, you won't really get any benefit from the site. But once you do pay, it's been great for me so far. I've only been on for 2 days and everything I've checked into has been legit and real in Jax, FL. The people I've talked to have been real, we've texted and sent pics, and I think I may have found the perfect place for me.

I'll find out more tomorrow, but I actually prefer Roommates.com over Craigslist. The only thing is that the person you email also has to be paying to use the service, otherwise they won't see your description at the end of your bio. And of course, you won't be able to email messages. But I did get phone numbers with local numbers, which is a plus.

I did get a few messages from Craigslist asking me to go to roommatenext.com (not roommates.com) to inquire about the room, but I ignored them based on other reviews I read. They weren't local phone numbers that texted me, so I figured it was a scam.

The key to all of this is that people have to pay to see the facts, but you get what you pay for. Customer service has been really good to me, too. If you need to verify anything, feel free to contact me. I was actually impressed with how everything turned out, since I didn't have high hopes to begin with.

I needed a place to live, so I decided to give Roommates.com a try. I signed up for their paid membership about 8-9 years ago and I was able to find a great roommate. Fast forward to now, I had a place to rent out and I thought I would use Roommates.com again to find a new roommate. However, my experience this time around was not as great as before.

I posted an ad on Roommates.com and I mostly received emails that were "flagged by their fraud department". I was not able to see the content of those emails, only that the message was removed. I also sent several emails to potential roommates, but I never received any responses. Little did I know at the time, but most of those people did not have a paid membership, which is why they were not able to respond to my messages.

I decided to upgrade my membership in hopes of getting more responses. While I did receive a couple of messages, it was not enough to justify the cost of the paid membership. I was still receiving "flagged" messages often, which was frustrating.

Once my paid membership ended, I decided not to renew it. However, I kept my free ad running just in case. I did receive a few "flagged" emails and a couple of what seemed to be legitimate emails, but I was not able to read them unless I paid for another membership. I thought this was ridiculous and unfair. The ability to read and respond to emails should not be a premium feature.

It seems like Roommates.com is just a scam now. They have made up profiles to make it look like there are more people on the site than there actually are. It's disappointing because it used to be a good service, but now it's just a waste of time and money.

I even let them pay less than a month for their deposit when they first moved in.

But, when it was time for them to move out, they stopped paying rent and bills a whole month before they were supposed to leave. They told me that their deposit would cover the rent, and I trusted them. They also promised to pay the outstanding bills, and I believed them.

Then, they stayed longer than their scheduled move out date, which meant they owed me even more money. They promised to pay the difference before they left, but when move out day came, they left without paying me a dime. I've been trying to get in touch with them ever since, but they've been ignoring my texts, emails, and calls. They owe me almost ?1000, and I'm a student without a lot of money myself.

To make matters worse, when they left, their room was a complete disaster. There was mold all over the walls, and the floor was covered in dirt, dust, trash, dirty socks, and press-on nails. It was absolutely disgusting, and I don't know how they could live like that.

So, my advice to you is to avoid Emily Fleur Butler and Chloe Cruickshank at all costs. They will lie to get out of paying, and they are just plain gross. Don't make the same mistake I did and trust them.

I gotta say, Roommates.com is a pretty decent site for finding a new roomie. Sure, there are some fake profiles on there, but there are also plenty of real people looking for a place to live. I've been using the site for a few days now and have already talked to a few potential roommates.

I had to pay $2.99 to Roommates.com to try to verify my ID, but they rejected it and asked for my social security number as an alternate way to "verify" my identity. What the heck?! I mean, worst case scenario, they (or some hackers?) are trying to steal my identity. Best case (?), the Roommates.com website sucks and it now looks like I failed verification. Either way, it's a total waste of time and money.

And speaking of money, I've had several "matches" say that they refuse to pay the cost to read my post. So what's the point of even trying to communicate? It's a total waste of time and money. And now I'm worried that my security, privacy, and identity could be vulnerable to theft. This is an awful "service" and a huge mistake on my part. It sure seems like a scam to me.

Update: I did get my money back after I reported the problem to my bank and asked for a refund. Roommates.com insisted that they're not a scam and paid the refund in full. But seriously, what's up with charging people to "verify" their ID? And please stop saying that the service is free if communication can't be accessed without paying. Just be upfront and say that you can post a profile for free, but you have to pay to access matches if you decide to use the service. It's more honest that way.

It's not just Roommates.com either. I did some research on online dating sites and found out that a lot of them use this bot baiting technique. It's all about making money off of software, and it's pretty shady if you ask me.

If you look around the site, you'll notice that a lot of the accounts don't even have photos. And you can't read their bios without paying either. It just doesn't seem right.

And here's the thing: a lot of these sites don't accept PayPal. Why? Because PayPal can intervene quickly in case of a dispute and reimburse your payment. These sites are probably covered by some provision that makes it hard to challenge the charges on your credit card.

It's like that old gentlemen's club in Atlanta where they spiked the drinks and charged people extra. Most people would dispute the charges, but some types of charges aren't subject to dispute. It's a real gray area.

And be careful, because a lot of these sites want your bank account or credit card info, but they're not actually searchable on Google. I've had people send me links from actual roommate finder sites, but when I click on them, they redirect me to sites that aren't even in the search engine.

Finally, I strongly encourage the company to consider moving away from a subscription model, to a commission-based model where they only get paid when and if they find a match for the "seller" of the room. The monthly subscription creates a really perverse incentive for the company. If instead the company moved to something like a $150 commission paid by the person with the room once a contract is signed, then it really would highly align the incentives of the company with those of its users.

They're using a sneaky technique to make you think you can do something, like seeing someone's pictures or getting a message, but then they won't let you until you pay. It's a cheap trick. This company, Roommates.com, might be alright if they were more upfront about what you can do for free. I spent a whole week anxiously waiting for a response to my messages so that I could find a roommate quickly (I got a job offer in a different city and need to move fast), only to receive a message and find out that I cannot read it or any other message without paying. If they had told me this from the beginning, it would have been okay, but waiting to tell me this after I have wasted a week of my time and someone else's seems really dishonest.

Honestly, I think craigslist works much better and it's free. You can find a roommate without having to pay any fees. It's really frustrating to have to pay for something that you can get for free elsewhere.

I give the company credit, they responded to this review quickly, calmly, and in a professional manner. However, in my experience, most companies will provide a checklist of features at each price point upon creation of an account, so the customer is not unpleasantly surprised and forced to upgrade. It would be nice if Roommates.com did the same.

But I am really impressed with how fast they replied to this. Good work! It shows that they care about their customers and are willing to listen to feedback. Overall, I think Roommates.com has potential, but they need to be more transparent about their pricing and features.

I clicked on the profiles for Jess C. and Philip C., but was disappointed to see that the profiles were already gone. This happens to me all the time - I get an email, click on the link, and the profile is already empty. Now I only use newspapers to find roommates. It just feels safer to me.

And then they all sent me this weird list of demands, like I had to sign some documentation sight unseen and send them a security deposit and first month's rent all at once. Oh, and they were all mysteriously unavailable for several months, and none of them had any friends in the area to show me the place. Yeah, right.

One of them even got super defensive when I started asking questions. Like, dude, you won't even show me the place, but you want me to send you money? What's up with that? And then they had the nerve to ask me what was wrong with me for thinking it might be a scam. Uh, maybe because it's a scam?

Anyway, long story short, I had a pretty terrible experience with Roommates.com. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This website where you gotta pay to talk to potential roommates ain't all that great. I mean, you'd think they'd have better security and screening for scammers, right? But nope, 3 outta 4 people I talked to were trying to scam me. And one of 'em almost got me to sign an agreement!

This person sent me fake pictures of the apartment, a long-winded story about its history, and even a picture of an ID that was probably stolen. I almost fell for it, but I did some research and found out that the listing was fake. When I confronted the person, they didn't even bother to reply. And now they got my ID and some personal info, which they could use to scam someone else.

The website tries to act like it's not their fault, that they're just a "billboard" website. But come on, if there's so many scammers on your site, then it IS your problem. You're taking people's money for a service, so you have an obligation to crack down on this stuff. And just deleting their posts after the fact ain't enough. It's like a hotel saying it's not their fault if stuff gets stolen from people's rooms, and that they're just providing shelter. That's some BS.

Overall, this website is trash and doesn't take responsibility for a major issue. Don't waste your money on it.

I joined www.roommates.com and soon enough received a message from a person who told me he wanted to rent a room. He seemed quite nice, so we discussed everything and I showed him the room. That guy never paid me and the worst part was that he robbed the room that I gave him! He stole everything what was much or less valuable and disappeared . I already contacted the police. Roommates website is not safe!

I have been trying to login through my username and password to no avail for the past 1 and half weeks. My username is femoo14462pe and password, pekun123. I do not know where the error is as I was severally referred back to my e.e-mail for the same password and username whicn the system is rejectin persistently. In the present circumstance therefore, and due to tje fact that my journey is bery much near, you may please wish to help me link up with the room owners that I want to book with. As the rating says: "Doesn't get any worse than this. Stay away!". I have been now for days trying to get a refund issued back to my card for a 60 day subscription to their service and they keep on trying to up-sell me...
I've told them many times, but they just don't listen.

This is the only roommate website I've encountered where I regularly get scammer emails. In fact, the vast majority of my emails have been from scammers in one case from the same one twice after it changed its user name after having been detected. On two occasions after my premium membership expired and I paid the fee again so I could read my email, I checked my email and guess what? Scammers. I really think that in a case such as this some consideration should be given to those who've paid the fee just so they can read their email only to find that it was suppressed by the Fraud Department. This strikes me as highly suspicious. I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone.

Scam artist has found the perfect breeding ground for committing fraud. roommates.com is sitting by while honest members are being robbed blindly. I was robbed of $2500.00 and there is nothing I can do about it except to warn unsuspecting people of the scam.

The rep from the site said it's free to view and email potential roommates. Untrue. If you've signed on as a freebe, you MUST upgrade to a paid account to view any email sent to you by other members who have attempted to send you emails. My suspicion is that staffers are actually sending emails because the email I received dated 4/20/12 stated in the subject line: "We're a perfect match." Hello? I don't think so.
