These people keep sending boxes marked free gift. When you open the box there is some cheap toy or something and a reader's digest condensed book. Then a few weeks later you get a bill from them. My husband says, I already paid for my subscription to Reader's Digest, so we look for a number to call. No number given, so we go to rd.com and there is no information on how to contact anyone. I have written them a nastygram, but have gotten no response. Meanwhile I get a letter saying our bill is past due and they have been so nice not to make us pay in advance, so we need to pay up. Still no way to contact except address above to which I sent my letter. I think everyone who has had this happen needs to get together for a class action lawsuit.

The same thing has happned to me. I received a "Pay it now" bill today. I didnot order anything and I received the book that I am not going to pay to return. Now the bill, that I refuse to pay for. I have a Nook/ color and I can order books on it so why would I order or pay $31.36 for a cheap paperback.

I had gotten two shipments from Reader's Digest, which I didn't order in the first place. The first order I had paid for, but the second order I will be returning. I called the [protected] number and asked to speak to a manager. She cancelled my orders that I never order. I am sending the second shipment back to where it came from. We should all get together and file a class action lawsuit. This is not right. I am turning them over to the Better Business Bureau.

I to had the same problem with Reader's Digest with them sending me a box marked free with a book and a pen and a plastic toy. I called [protected] and spoke to a customer service women by the name of Alice #79806 and she stated that she would reverse the bill. But before all that she stated that I needed to send the book back and the pen and the toy was free. After letting her know that people were getting together to start a class action law suit claim this is when she said that she would reverve the charges. Try this it appeared to work for me. She did try to tell me that I ordered this item. I never ordered anything from them before. Good luck.

Sounds like many of us have the same complaint. Receiving SH*&*T we didn't order and getting billed for same stuff. I recently received a CD which I did not order, I put it into another mailing envelope, paid postage to send back to reader's Digest and now I have received another bill for the same CD. THey should have received it back weeks ago. What is happening to this company? Used to not have any problems with my subscription. but now getting these stupid entries for sweepstakes seems to be their way of screwing with you by sending unwanted items, and whether you receive them or not you get billed for them. Not a great way to do business, especially legitimate business anyway.

THE SOLUTION !
Listen up folks...been there, done that...
Simply refuse the books by handing them back to the mailperson, saying you didn't order this, or writing "refused...return to sender" on the box and dump it in the mail. RD then must pay the return postage...and yes, they stop sending you extra books real fast :)
Also, if you know you've paid your magazine subscription, you can do this with any further mail they try to send you.
cheers!

Why are you sending me a Past Due Notice for my May Payment? I am looking at my Bank statement and the payment was posted and shown PAID before the 24thof the month! I really don't appreciate getting Past Due notices - I pay my Bills and this one has been paid. Keep this up and I'll stop doing business with you quick. Henry D.

I so agree, I have received music CD's that I have not ordered and then receiving a bill for them. When I received these they came in a blank envelop with no note of any kind, no phone number to call and cancel, no return address. Then a bill comes stating I am late with my payment. This is wrong and needs to stop. I can't believe there getting away with this. Sue Hollander

Yes! My 93 year old mother was getting so into the Readers Digest sweepstakes that she was risking her life to walk to the post office to send her entries in on time. She thought that Ron Leslie was "such a charmer" because he promised her that if she won the prize he would personally accompany her to the winners party. She was in a "select group" and very close to winning (HA!). She would get box after box of "free gifts" and this really sweetened her up. Then, I finally had to call and ask that she be removed from the mailing list because it was taking over her life. A few weeks later we got a bill for almost $3000 charging her for all those "free gifts." There were crazy things on there that she never would have ordered. Readers Digest preys on the vulnerable and is disgustingly deceptive in its practices. There was a suit against them in 2001 by several states regarding their deceptions, but it did not go far enough. People should be calling the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-FTC-HELP and their State Attorney Generals office and the Consumer Protection Agency [protected]. We can't let these creeps keep getting away with ripping people off!

My situation with RD has been settled with the help of the Consumer Protection Board in New York. I did recieve a post card of apology from RD, but then the letter that RD sent to the Consumer Protection Board claimed that I did send a request for the books and gave the date recieved. The lady writing the letter to the Board also apologized for the trouble that I HAD CAUSED them. I was sent a copy of that letter. When I read it I was tempted to ask RD for a copy of that request because I did not request any books. The only thing I can think of is that this must have something to do with the sweepstakes entry. However I have decided not to ask for a copy of this so called request. I am tired of messing with this. I've had enough with RD, now and forever. Enough is enough! And my problem has been solved. Hope everyone will have the same results. Sandra McIntosh

These guys rot, big time. I pay my elderly mother's bills via bill payer through my bank. For Select Editions, they actually opened up a Reader Digest magazine subscription. They had no idea based upon the account number that the payment was for SELECT EDITIONS! It took me an hour to straighten it out! I don't have time for this nonsense. Rot in in hell, RD! I can see they have never straightened their pathetic processing system as these posts are three years old. On the bill, it says pay your bill online and the IP address they list on the bill doesn't even exist.

Ok, this is my third comment on this site. If you look you will see at least one of them. I finally had my complaint settled. I recieved a post card with an apology for the misunderstanding and an assurance that it is not RD's pratice to knowingly place an order without specific authorization. This was after some letters to them from me and after I reported this to The Better Business Bureau, ARRP and State of New York State Consumer Protectioon Board. The post card of apology was from Carol Stater, Customer Care and the phone number is [protected]. Hope this will help others in this situation.

Yesterday (8/4/11) I received a package and much to my surprise I found a book “Select Edition: 61 HOURS by Lee Child, SMALL CHANGE by Sheila Roberts, NOWHERE TO RUN by C. J. Box, and LEAVING UNKNOWN by Kerry Reich.” that I had never ordered !
I also found an invoice for the amount of $35.66 for this book and some cheap gifts (good only for a garbage bin).
I really cannot appreciate this fraudulent way of selling books.
I called to [protected] and I was instructed by CS representative Nil (42081) to send this book back using the address : Reader's Digest, 300 Orenda Road, East Bramton, ON, L6T 1G2.
So my question is: why should I spend my time and money for going to the Post office and sending this book back ? The book that I have never ordered !
Frankly, I did not expect such cheap tricks from Reader's Digest.

Please send the issues of Best Health and Reader's Digest magazines that I already paid for and do not prolong any of my subscriptions. I will not accept this!

My problem with readers digest was that they autmatically renewed my subsription and the gift subscriptions to their magazine. Then sent me bills which I thought were duplicates to the bill I had already paid . Took me a long time to find contact number also.

I also was scammed by Readers Digest ! I entered their so-called NO PURCHASE necessary contest and they started sending me crappy books ! Thanks to these other unfortunate victims comments I called the phone number and was able to get them stopped and void the bill of said crappy books . And I would like to thank those who had found the phone numbers because God knows it was a challenge to find . RD makes it very difficult to respond to the BULL that they are shoveling ! And thank GOD for the Internet because without it we would all be stuck !

Been going through this with RD. Have a 3rd statement with hints of threats. I have contacted The New York State Consumer Protection Board, 5 Empire State Plaza Suite 2101 Albany New York [protected]. I had reported this to the Better Business Bureau and at their suggeston I then contacted this agency. They are looking into it. Perhaps others that are being harass by RD should do this. I agree completely. I have requested many times for rd to stop sending me all of these condensed books and cds etc. i don't want them and i most definitely cannot afford any unnecessary things at this time. RD is causing me hardship.

I have had nothing but trouble with rd. They take advantage of my 87 year old mother leaving me to cancel books she cannot afford. $31.65! for something worth no more than $15.00. I will try the 800 number someone else gave us to cancel in the morning. I hope it will work for me.

The same thing for me. Received a book from RD in the mail saying free book. I didn't want it, but took it to a nursing home for their library. Then I received another book, and quite frankly didn't pay much attention to it. Put it up somewhere, don't know where, thinking that after Christmas and things settled down I would take it to the nursing home. I am not a subscriber of Reader's Digest and haven't been for a very long time. I did not order any books. Seems like there was some type of contest mailing that I found in my mail box and I might have sent that in, but if I did I did not order anything. Today I received a nasty letter, second billing it said for $31.00 for Vol 5-10 The Christmas List they said that I ordered. ( I have never heard of it, guess the first book was 1 - 4. I didn't look at the book so I don't know.) I did receive a first bill, put it away and meaning to deal with it, but frankly forgot about it. After all I did not order anything. The fact is I have no desire for Reader's Digest Books. Recently I had to close my mother's home and sell it. She had a huge collection of RD books and I couldn't find any takers. I ended up putting them in a dumpster. This magazine was at one time a very reputable and realiable magazine. What has happened to it? This sure seems like a scam to me. Now I am considering if I should just pay and forget or seek counceling and pay for an attorney. Quite frankly the attorney just might be the way I go. This does make me angry. Sandra McIntosh

Thanks to all that posted the phone number [protected]) for Reader's Digest Payment Center. I, too, had received a bill from their Book Department for books I DIDN'T ORDER. I called their number and talked to customer service Barbie. I told her my situation and she said that she is cancelling all future shipments of the books BUT I HAVE TO PAY THE BILL THEY SENT ME. She also said that if I ignore this, my account will be sent to COLLECTION AGENCY.

I explained to her that, first, I did not authorized nor ordered a book from them. Second, I cancelled my RD subscriptions a long time ago. I even told her to remove my name on their list. She said that she will put a note on her computer about it; she still reminded me to pay the bill due in 2 weeks.

I told her that I will file a complaint to FTC, Attorney General and Better Business Bureau against them for billing me for books that I did not order nor authorized to subscibe. Only then that she mentioned that future books has been cancelled and disregard future billings.

Right now, I am composing a formal complaint letter to FTC, BBB and Attorney General against Reader's Digest. If any of you filed a lawsuit against them, count me in.

Again, their phone number is [protected].

Ok friends you must report these bad companies to our authorities do not be fool, call them and let them know that you will not send any payments to them if they insist to send these material or collection letter, give them another chance if they do not be generous with your kindness you must use your rights to complain. You must show them that your kindness can not be confuse with weakness, you are kind not weak, think about it. This is the place you must to report them:
FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION : https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

ATTORNEY GENERAL: just go online and in search engine type Attorney General and select the one in your state, if you are in California the link is http://ag.ca.gov/consumers/general.php

Good look

I just called the product and book department [protected]) and talked with Sara, employee #80363. I have never been so impressed! She has cancelled all existing and future orders for my account. She advised me to just mark pkg "RETURN TO SENDER" and the post office will just send them back. I am to disregard any future bills which may be coming, as this was taken care of. This was by the best experience I have ever had with Readers Digest. I am pleased that both people I talked with were so courteous and helpful. Instead of me worrying myself sick over the surprise bill, I was able to actually TALK to the company and resolve the problem. Thank heaven for this site, as this is where I found the phone numbers to call.

I just rec'd a "Past due bill" notice for something they call "Vol 3-10 winter garden" which they claim I ordered and was shipped 6/10. The bill date is 8/3/2010. Needless to say, I DID NOT ORDER ANYTHING from them. Previously somehow they had sent me a second book when I mistakenly ordered the first "FREE" one, and I neglected to return it. Now they think they've found a new sucker with this so called winter garden thing. Funny, I never heard of this thing before - - never bought or ordered or rec'd vols 1 & 2 ! The only thing I order is the magazine, and have for years. If they don't stop this BS I guess I'll just contact the postmaser general's office and have them read about all the other complaints. I didn't reach 78 yrs old by letting people run all over me ! Somebody somewhere should investigate the practices of RD.
