Public Storage filth, racist/sexist employees

This particular storage facility is a dump. Its dirty, they never clean the bathroom or sweep the floors. There are roaches and rats moving from one storage container to the next. They don't hire female workers, its only men there. I think I saw a girl sweeping the hallways once. They only allow customers to use the men's bathroom and keep the female bathroom locked for themselves to use. Women complain that they have to use the men's bathroom. They discriminate against Black people who use the facility. I was told that there is a Black Man who goes to the facility everyday to check on his stuff because they have a habit of sweeping garbage into his storage bin. They put additional locks on his bin even though he is paid up when they close the facility. He is paid up on time every single month. Its unfortunate that he has to go through that in addition to whatever reason he needs to use the facility. I can only imagine how unsafe he feels having to leave his stuff there. Probably doesn't have the money to move it out. They raised their fees, by the way. If you are late one month they are ready to take your stuff and auction it off for as low as $500 or less. There are at least 3 or 4 different facilities in the area. Do not go to this one or any Public Storage facility. Take it from me. Its hot and sweaty there in the summertime and Ice cold in the winter. The thermostats are broken and the only place warm is the office they work in. To be honest, they should all be fired, from the District Mgr on down.

Public Storage takes advantage of existing customer with large rate increases

Public Storage does not care about long term customers. Typically, when you rent something long term and are a good customer (always pay on time, never cause any problems), the renting company will give you a good deal and will normally not raise the rent every year.

Well, it seems that public storage only cares about making money. I have been renting a storage unit for more than 6 years and the rent has gone up by more than 10% EVERY year. I called the customer service line and they say that my rental rate is below the market rate so they will not allow the rate to remain the same. (no courtesy holding of the rate or good will)

The company is taking advantage of the fact that it is not easy to switch storage unit providers. They probably have analyzed their historical data and know that people remain in units for so many years and don't move out. Customers (such as myself) are between a rock in a hard place ... do I take hours/days out of my life, rent a moving truck, and put my belongings in a different storage company's unit nearby so I can save $25 a month? Probably not ... and Public Storage knows this so what they are doing is borderline criminal.

I think people should unite and either petition for laws to protect storage unit consumers .. or .. file some sort of class action suit.

There should be a maximum that rent can increase every year ... something under 5% ... or something based on inflation or treasury bonds.

I agree 100%. I have a storage unit with Public Storage in Virginia also. And they have raised the rent every year around 10% (I have had the unit for 7 years! ... I never intended for it to be that long, but that is another story). They also say that the new rate is below the market rate.

How can inflation be average about 2% over the last year but the rental rate has gone up 10% per year?

Public Storage is taking advantage of its customers. They know it is super inconvenient to change storage locations so they keep raising their rates after people move in ... which of course re-sets the market rate and the whole cycle starts over again the next year.

Definitely should be some legal or legislative action regarding this. I am surprised that current consumer protection laws do not cover this.

I completely agree! I haven't had the unit a year yet and the rent was increased by $32 or 18%. I signed the contract to have the unit at a price and expected that this would be the price for a minimum of a year. Laws need to be put in place restricting the maximum increase and also limiting the increase to an annual basis. Class action lawsuit or something needed.

I absolutely agree. They reel you in with $1 a month initiation fee then over the course of years your rent becomes hundreds of dollars. For example, for the first 3 months of my thus far 3 year lease I pain $25. Now, I pay $200 a month. They insidiously increase the rent without notice- you just get a bill with increased amounts every 6 months or so.
Additionally they require insurance for your belonging while in their storage facility which is yet another way they get to charge you more.
I plan to get my item out ASAP, write a letter to their company directors and disperse this warning to anyone who is thinking of storage with Public storage.
Thank you.

Public Storage - $3000 theft of clothing

Have been renting a storage unit from them for 2.5 years. Rent has increased by 25% during that time. Also purchased insurance through Willis, the company they promote when you sign up with them. It had been four months since visited the unit and as soon as we walked in we noticed boxes ripped open and clothes missing. We immediately reported it to the...

Public Storage items stolen 13 months ago and I was not notified

I began renting storage unit B254 In April 2009 from Public Storage located at 1155 Belvedere Road, 33405. I visited the unit on 16 August 2012 to organize and remove items and move out as I had planned relocation from the area. At that time, I arrived to the unit, to find locks intact, but my property missing. I immediately notified police and property management prior to entering my unit. Upon speaking with both parties, it came to my attention that the property, including my unit, was burglarized on 27 July 2011. Subsequent to that the property made several attempts to contact me via phone. After failing to notify by phone they ceased attempts, despite having email and physical address to correspond and notify. I continued to pay rent on the facility for the subsequent 13 months, unbeknownst to me that my property had been stolen.

There was no apparent damage to my locks, of which I held two sets of keys issued to me. When I spoke to the property manager on 16 August, the property manager remarked: "I thought it looked weird, after that night, and I had it on a watch list, as the locks were tampered with. I thought the owner had taken everything they wanted and were going to skip and move out. It seemed strange for someone to pay rent for just papers left."

Public Storage water in storage unit

Water damage thru entire unit @ 2109 Ogden Ave, Lisle, IL Public Storage. Water coming thru the roof when raining, water coming thru cinder block walls even when its not raining, water seeping up thru the concrete floors all the time. Entire contents of boxes, furniture and everything inside the unit was wet & moldy. Had to be thrown out at my expense! I was forced to take their insurance thru Willis insurance, who as I have now found out is owned by Public Storage?! The $2000 coverage was denied and not paid out at all. I had to pay to rent a truck, rent a dumpster (at my home since I wasn't allowed to have it brought to the property) then dispose of my entire lifes belongings because of this fraudulant company. The manager was rude and insensitive! The district manager wouldn't even call me back! Their corporate office just gives me the run around and no one will take the blame for their buildings being damaged and being the cause of my stuff being destroyed! I am telling everyone I know about this place and never to use this company!

It takes missing months of payments to have your items sold out of your unit. Since you were not paying your rent didnt it occur to you that this might happen? Its not like you missed one payment and they sold your things.

I also have had a locker with Public storage and they don't wait months! One month. That's it! Then they start adding fees and liens and cut your lock off to take pictures of its content for auction ads.

I can't say for these people, but 1 month and they were off and running with mine.

Public Storage scam

I rented out a 10×10 unit (size big enough for a two bedroom apartment) from public storage on 1414 S. Wabash on Oct 31, 2009. I put all my belongings in there thinking that my things would be safe. I paid on time every month. On Feb 6, 2010 I went into Public Storage to make a payment and decided to check on my belongings to make sure everything was Okay and which it was. The next month Mar 6, 2010, I went into Public Storage to make a payment and needed to get some things out of my rental space. So when I went to open the door I noticed that I could not turn my key. So I went to the employee on duty and asked him if there was a reason to why my key was no working. So he checked the system and said ” well you haven’t paid late so we wouldn’t have any reason to change the locks”. So we went to my rental space and he tried the key as well and it still did not work. So he told me that i will have to have the locks changed and that they can change the locks but I would have to pay for a new lock (which I thought was crazy because the locks shouldn’t have been changed in the first place). He told me that his supervisor Mike Cook had to change them but he will not be in until a couple week later, but he will call him and see if he could come in sooner then that. So I told him okay just have him change the locks. So the employee called me the next day saying that his supervisor would be in to change the locks and to come in t pick up the keys, I told him okay I will be in as soon as I get off work. He called me back maybe 30 minutes later and told me that they came down to change the locks and that there was NOTHING in the unit. Some one broke into my unit STOLE EVERYTHING and changed the locks. So I left work and came to Public Storage and my things were GONE! I filed a police report and file a claim with the insurance me run around, I wanted to review the cameras and they have not cooperating with me. I’m starting to believe this was an INSIDE job. I just want Public Storage to know that this is absolutely unacceptable and I am going to fight this all the way to the end. You can not just so or allow someone things to be stolen and think that it okay. NO IT’S NOT.

Public Storage rented me a space in which I could not store my stuff

I recently called the 800 number for support and facility locations in Austin. I explained to them the size and reason why I would need the storage unit. I was storing my wave runner which sits on a tandem trailer with a 8.5 foot width. I went to the rental location in south Austin and meet with the property agent who showed me the 10'X15' unit. I asked him if the garage door was 9' and he told me that it was 9'. I told him that I would take the unit and signed the lease. I signed the lease at 12:30PM and came back to the storage unit by 1:15PM. I drove up to the unit and proceeded to push the wave runner and trailer into the unit. To my surprise the storage unit door was smaller than was told to me. I called the agent over to look at the problem. He looked at it and told me that the door was actually only 8 feet wide and he could see that my wave runner and trailer were not going to fit. He asked me if I could take the 800 lbs wave runner off the trailer. I asked him how would I do that, and what was I going to do with the trailer. I was renting the unit for a specific purpose. He took me back to the office to close out the rental and to refund me the money on the unit. Please remember I did not put one thing in the storage unit and probably had possession for less than 30 minutes. Two weeks later I received a refund check for less than $39 dollars. They charge me over $97 for not putting one thing in the unit. When I called to complain, the customer service rep told me that they don't refund the $22 admin fee, which I told her was ludicrous because the management team gave me the wrong information. The customer service rep also told me that I wouldn't get the half months rent because I that was non refundable. I explained to her that her statement about a half months rent was not reasonable because I had not even had possession of the storage unit for more than 30 minutes. I had rented from Public Storage prior to this event and I was extremely happy, but right now I would never ever rent from them again. Please do yourself a favor and be aware of how this company treats its customers.

Public Storage - may end up as a bait-and-switch

Do NOT fall for the $1.00 ADS - Neither the unit, nor the price are guaranteed at all. We reserved a unit, had a confirmation email in hand, confirmed with them over the phone (and they call daily until you talk to them); even went to the facility a few days early to make sure everything was in order and measure the unit when were told "that rate was just...

Public Storage threw away a check and then added late charges

I would never use Public Storage again. I've experienced the sudden raising of rates and recently I asked for my current rates. It is written on cards handed to me - yet that current rate turns out to be minus the "insurance" which is NOT optional and therefore became a late charge. They know it is hard to argue when they have your stuff and you cannot easily pickup and move everything. Paying in pennies was very passive agressive - but it felt very good. Complaints to corporate just go on answered. Do NOT use them if you have a choice!

Public Storage I have never been treated so badly by a company in my life

After suffering a painful foreclosure in 1999, I slowly purchased household items so that when I purchased a new house in the future I would.

In 2009 I rented storage space from Public Storage and put all my household items in it. I had enough item for every room of my future home.

In December 2009 I noticed the lock to my storage unit had been tampered with. One of the locks had been cut through, the other lock was jammed in such a way that it was jammed and my key would not work. I had to climb a ladder to the top of my storage unit to look down into the unit to see what had been stolen. The metal grate on top of the unit had been cut and pulled back and my property had been lifted up from this whole in the grate.

Every time I had come to check on my unit before the theft, a male and a female Public Storage employee would casually strole by and look into my unit whenever I would be standing in the open door of my unit.

I found out about the theft when I went to pay my bill. As I was paying my bill the male employee did not inform me that My locks had been tampered with. There was also a policeman in the office when I was paying my bill.

Again, the employee did not inform me of the theft to my unit while the police officer was there. And he was very arrogant. I felt so devastated and violated by the theft and honestly did not know what to do. The items I had in storage represented my hope of purchasing a new home in the future. After previously suffering a foreclosure this theft was equally devastating.

After I went home I Called Public Storage and spoke with that female employee and told her I would return with the police and file a police report. She told me I could not call the police and that she would not be there. She sounded very nervous and I have not seen her there since. She seems to have vanished.

Now I’ll talk about the insurance Public Storage insisted I buy from a company that is affiliated with them. When I reported the theft they told me that the policy required that I have receipts for each stolen item. However, the insurance company refused to send me a copy of the police even though I requested it three times and pay insurance every month.

I have never been treated so badly by a company in my life. I firmly believe Public Storage employees were involved in the theft of property from my storage unit.

As a former PS employee I can tell you it is unlikely it was an inside job. More likely is that the property you rented from, like most of the PS offices I have worked at, has faulty or no cameras enabled on the property. My last property worked for PS as a relief manager had a security camera system which burned out in April of 2010 and despite multiple contacts with the district manager, was still burned out in June of 2011, when multiple burglaries occurred. The district managers run the show, and all employees can do is follow their directions under constant threat of firing if they do not sell enough locks, merchandise and insurance to customers. I am sorry this happened to you, and I am thankful I no longer work for this company. BTW: The district and regional managers regularly tell employees that when a break-in occurs that 'it's not our problem. Give them the insurance number and that's all we are required to do"

I have the same issue amongst numerous others I scheduled a move out 9/30/14 paid for the month & then now they went ahead and changed the date to 10/31/14 and sent me a letter for 2nd notice of default of payment. Not only did they charge me rent then a late fee as well as another amount that is not even an option of lein fee. I then was told that it would still again increase before I was to make the payment to them and that it was to be paid in full completely in 10 days of receiving the letter which was on 10/20/14 while it lists the due date of payment as 11/1/14 and when I went to view my bill online it shows a completely different price and my last payment being on 9/8/14

Public Storage terrible experience

As I left for Dallas Texas last November 2007, I stopped at Public Storage to pick up a few items. Before Leaving the location I stopped at the front desk to see if everything was ok and up to date with my storage space, and yes I was assured everything was fine. It was made clear of my trip was job related.

As of a few days past from my departure, a phone call was made received by me from the facility manager stating a $34.00 payment was due. I told them I was at a clerk of courts office doing title work and it would have to wait, and ok was the response.

2 weeks later I get a certified letter stating a routine check on the unit revealed the lock missing and a response being requested of me. Let me tell you I did. to no avail to I get any help. Days and weeks leading up to this time frame this location had many employee problems i.e., not opening when they should, employee(s) being arrested by probation/parole officer from California and theft of cash from payments being made over the front counter.

Well the rest tells the story. Arrangements for payment were made and the parties trying to help was rejected. So, The property I had stored in this unit was auctioned off before I made it back to New Orleans, LA. I was observed bringing in and out through the front entrance computer gear and of course I went with my gut feeling to remove such gear and ship it out to Texas. Let me tell you, I know for a fact my unit was accessed by the file key and it was done by a PUBLIC STORAGE EMPLOYEE thinking they could score big.

Due to the unit going up for auction, no checks could be accepted but in fact one was deposited at the request of the location management one day after the items sold. List of Items: Personal greeting cards from years past sent/given to me by family, Clothing times, Shoes, Boots, Personal blank checks, a Brief Case with credit cards inside, Clothing Box with many Clothes(Winter), Tools, Underwear (What Perverts), Personal Art signed to me, Plaques of awards and being Published, Personalized Golf Items, Minor Computer and Office supplies, Business Publications, Just a lot of stuff that cannot be replaced. Make note they managed to get me the plastic file box with personal papers inside back with a portrait of myself and a pitney Bowes Machine that couldn't be sold anyway.

You see, upon my return, I had what was left being caught through while I was present. The District manager Kevin, told them to dispose of any evidence that was on the premises. I contacted the corporate offices of PUBLIC STORAGE and they were telling me oh that just cant be.

Well, months latter now I have possibly credit fraud attempts through credit issuing agencies and bureaus and emails going on. I am not letting this die you see I set up PUBLICSTORAGE.blogdrive.com using the color scheme and logo to spread the word of the criminal enterprise. Public Storage damages / horrible customer service

My husband & I relocated from Colorado to Virginia. We rented a space from the Public Storage on Jefferson Ave in Newport News. We were there until July 7th, 2008. We received a letter from the facility saying that they were going to be replacing the unit doors starting in June.
The day we went to move out, we found some of our property had been moved, gone through & the glass shelves in my china hutch had been broken . My hutch had been moved away from the wall where the mover had put it.
In august I received a collection notice from Publc Storages collection agency. I contacted the collection agency, they were very helpful & froze the account so we wouldn't get any more notices. I explained to the gentleman that we had been trying to get the facility & their District Manager to resolve the issue .
I explained that they said they would take care of the problem for us initially, but then quit returning our calls.
Today 11/03/08 I have tried yet again to get a resolution to this issue. Now I am being told that they can't talk to me about the issue, even though I am the one they have been dealing with for these past several months.
DON"T REN FROM PUBLIC STORAGE EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER

Public Storage cheating those who evacuate

I was in Public Storage for 3 months. I let them know a month in advance I was moving out, I reminded them a week in advance, I told them again the day before, and the day of move out.
3 weeks passes since I move out and they contact me saying I owe them money. I called back repeatedly trying to find out why, no answer, it would go to an answering machine for which they refused to return the calls. Finally, I sent a certified letter demanding to be contacted and they did, and the guy who contacted me said he was not trained to handle the situation and would have someone contact me back, which didn't happen til I sent another certified letter. Then I was contacted back saying that I owed them 2 months rent. I said for what, I evacuated my unit. They said there are still items in it which some may deem valuable, I requested to know what items that may be, they could not tell me. For weeks I sent certified letter after certified letter trying to get it cleared up, they now claim I owe them hundreds of dollars for the proceeding months after my evacuation of the unit. They auctioned off whatever property they claim was in the unit. They are now sending me letters threatening lawsuits and reporting against my credit. The sad thing is all this could have been avoided had I not dated one of their employees, who's boss had a crush on her.

i think i know what you are trying to say but first did you mean to say you vacated the space not evacuate?/lol!if so i hear you loud and clear best advice DO NOT PAY! tell the collection company to run the gate code reports to see when you used your code last! thats the only proof you need to show when you were there last! GOOD LUCK!

Public Storage stolen property

I had rented a storage unit for nearly 3 years without any issues until the week before I was scheduled to vacate at the end of June of this year. I had visited my storage unit on Sat June 21st to grab a few boxes and things were fine. I called the office on Thurs. afternoon which was June 26Th to inform them I would be vacated by the end of the month. I spoke to Yamen. At that time he informed me that that would not be a good time to move because of painting, when I arrived at 6:15 p.m. no painting was in progress...? When I got there the front gate at the property was not working, it appeared to be stuck open and would not close. When I reached the door to get into the storage building, it also was not working correctly as the door would not completely close or lock. Upon arriving at my storage locker I found a lock on there that was not mine. Being after hours I called the 877 number. I was told there was nothing that they could do and I would have to wait until the morning. A few minutes later I realized that the unit next to mine was missing a lock, at that time I walked around and discovered several more units were also missing locks. Again I called the 877 number to let them know that there were units that did not have locks on them and again, I was told very impolitely there was nothing they could do until the next day. My boyfriend also made a call to inform them that the front gate was not working and was told they were aware, as problem had already been reported earlier and a email had been sent to the manager. I decided to file a police report at that time (case number 08-7066). When officer Hodges arrived, he made note of the front gate not working and complex door not properly closing, during his inspection of the units without locks, found numerous that had been cut and thrown back into the units. At that time he could not complete my report as I didn't have access to my unit, and would return the next evening. The next day, Friday the 27Th, I called the office to make sure they were aware of the break-ins and not to touch the locks as the police officers would return to collect them for possible evidence. I was told with an attitude that the employee knew and it was fine. That evening I returned after work at approximately 5 p.m. The same gentleman I had spoke to on the phone the day before, Yamen, was working at the time. He told me that an employee must have placed the lock on my unit because it had been found without one. When we got to my unit he looked at the lock and asked if I was sure it wasn't mine because it wasn't one of theirs, I told him no, it definitely wasn't mine, I had purchased a round lock from P.S. and the one that was on there was a common masterlock. At this time he left to make a call to the property manager. When he returned I was again told I would have to wait until the next day to have the lock removed, which was complete crap to me as I felt that the lock had been placed there so whom ever had broken in could return to help themselves later. We walked back to the office, I asked Yamen how often the employees checked on the storage units, he told me once a day. Which makes me wonder seen as how I had been there 15 minutes after the office had closed, how all of the units without locks were not seen earlier in the day. Also while I was in the office I noticed that the video cameras that were outside had been covered up because of the painting. At this time officer Hodges and his partner officer Parrott arrived. While questioning Yamen about the front gate, he falsely stated to the officers that when he left the previous day at 6 p.m. the gates were working at that time, and also that there were no issues with the door that led into the units. While the officers were gathering information from Yamen I decided that I would go to Lowe's to purchase bolt cutters as the police officers would need to get into my unit to indeed see if anything of mine had been stolen to finish my report, not to mention there was no way I was going to leave my unit for one more night with a lock someone else had put on there. When I returned the officers were collecting all of the cut locks so when they finished they helped me cut the lock on my unit, once opened surprise surprise my car audio equipment that was worth approximately $1300 was gone. I did have some jewelry and a t.v. that were also in the unit, but those were not taken at that time. I finished moving all of my things out at 1:30 A.M. A few weeks later I returned to get a copy of my lease agreement. When I first rented my unit I went through P.S. for insurance and was covered up to $2000. I was given the number to Willis insurance and filed a new claim on a Thursday in July and was told that I would be called on either Friday or Monday. Three weeks and 3 messages later left with Willis that I would like someone to contact me and no return phone call, I finally get a hold of a representative who informs me that I refused to switch to Willis when they took over as insurance provider for P.S. leaving me uninsured, and that they had mailed me a letter stating this, which of course, I never received. She verified at that time that they had my correct address on file, which they did. My address on the lease is not current, my bad, I should have updated it. When I asked how I could have refused if I knew nothing about it she told me that letters were sent out and I had refused is all she would tell me; this lady unfortunately was very unpleasant to deal with also. The alternate contact on the lease however is my parent's current info, were never contacted. I do not understand how it is possible that I am required to have insurance, but was allowed to go so long without, unbeknownst to me. I am also aware that the price for insurance did not go up, but stayed the same at $8 when Willis took over and I would think that the new insurance would just be transferred over. In no way did I knowingly want to be uninsured, at any time. So, I am obviously very frustrated with my experience. I just cannot believe every ones snotty attitudes throughout this whole ordeal, both from P.S. and Willis. I know there are 40 or so others that this also happened to, and I sincerely hope there experience hasn't been as ridiculous as mine.

Willis Insurance is a scam! They would have turned you down anyway...no eveidence of forced entry they are try to tell me! How does someone break in? cut the lock with a $20 bolt cutter bought anywhere...or cut the metal door in half? or bulldoze the walls? Of course there is no evidence! its a scam...we should get them onto 60 minutes or 20/20!
