I've rented from Public Storage for approximately 8 years. I transferred my unit to a smaller space, different location and less cost in 2014. I now rent at 7909 Sudley Road Manassas, VA. I called my location on 11/09/15 and complained about the escalting rent. The staff referred me to customer service at [protected]. After going around on a menu and...

Public Storage file complaints on this company with your state's ag and the us attorney's office in your state

They have been committing fraudulent and unsavory business practices for years. I have just discovered that the alleged "certified mail tracking numbers" they say that are issued with the auction notices they allegedly mail are BOGUS. I recently wrote to the USPS to confirm a couple of those numbers they claimed were attached to auction notices allegedly mailed to me before they illegally auctioned of my unit, #2032 of 370 Holland Lane, Alexandria, VA 22312, in August of 2012. Report them to as many consumer and state legal agencies as you can-they must be put out of business and their corporate officers jailed for condoning these practices. Their Chief Legal Officer is Lily Yan Hughes and their chief in-house counsel is Steven Glick at [protected]@publicstorage.com. Corp. address is 701 Western Avenue, Glendale, CA.

Public Storage refusal to release property

A storage locker was rented and was 30 days past due. Full payment was made only to have the employee kate refuse to remove their lock for 45 minutes. She then told me i was a f****** idi****-and refused to give me insurance papers to file a claim for missing property. I understand that being late has consequences--yet after the entire debt was paid--to have to deal with her on top of missing property crosses the line.

What kind of person does this to another, makes up lies because they were turned down for a date. How would you like it if someone did the same to you at your place of work, got angry at you and made up lies about your being rude just to get you fired.

Actually people I have a confession to make. She was never rude to me. I was angry at her. I tried to get a date with her because she was pretty and she said no. In retaliation I made all this up about her to get her fired. She never swore at me or called me any names.

Public Storage high pressure sales tactics

Public storage is nothing more than a sales/marketing organization disguised as a storage business.
The personnel move from facility to facility. It is heavily sales scripted. When you first make the call to the 800 number, in a matter of minutes you will get the feel that you are in a car dealership. Once they get your information they will make an appointment at the facility of your choosing. When you arrive they will prequalify you for the storage unit based on a series of questions and then take you around in the little golf cart to the storage unit based on the questions you have answered, very similar to the car dealer. Then when you return to the office they will try to close the deal and get your money. If they don’t get your money that day, they will make a sales follow-up call using another one of their employees to pressure you into a decision.
They have a very sophisticated phone system. Once they have your phone numbers don’t try calling the 800 number back to reach the corporate office for any reason; it will only ring at the facility you visited.
When I first checked these guys out I did not find any bad reviews at first and then I returned and Googled “Public Storage Reviews” and I got hundreds, no kidding. Oh and the “$1 First Month Rent*” is nothing more than a scam. Don’t just take my word for it, go to this site and read the “Top 301 Complaints and Reviews about Public Storage” at consumeraffairs.com.

This is in reply to MkStItCh posting on here. Public Storage raises the rents 10% each year as a matter of business policy. It has absolutely nothing to do with being late or paying on time, or being a good citizen or a bad citizen, as to whether they will substantially increase their rent. It is purely about greed by a company that by law pays 0 federal income tax. In fact, if you are late they will charge you an additional $50 for being a day late, for those people who had trouble finding the money to pay the monthly charge to begin with. But as a predator, Public Storage knows that they have your personal belongings in their possession (because they will bolt your storage unit with a separate lock the day after you are late) and demand a late fee in addition to the monthly payment owed. However, their policy of 10% annual increases is a policy that they apparently practice across the United States. (Europe has different laws and more government regulation in general so it is unlikely that Public Storage can gouge as easily as they can in the U.S.).

But as far as increasing the rent annually 10%, and holding your personal possessions as hostage material if you are late in your payments (because you cannot access it), and never paying US Corporate Income Tax goes, talk about redistributing income - it cannot get any better than that. Take from the poor and those who are most vulnerable and unprotected by the law (who have had to use storage facilities because of an unexpected life event to begin with) and gouge them with annual increases at 2 or 3 or 4 times the rate of inflation, and then pay nothing back into the system. It is usually called being a Taker, and that tag applies to Public Storage in its full meaning of the term. (In other parts of the world they call it extortion).

So MkStItCh you are entirely wrong in your uninformed assessment. It is their corporate policy - it is not an isolated circumstance or incident. It is solely about greed and being able to get away with it. You may want to do a little research first before you speak about what it is you do not know and do not understand.

You might want to read the contract BEFORE you do something like this...

They have several reasons for increasing the rates so much like that. One of the most common reasons is "LATE PAYMENTS". The contracts usually read something like "If you are late more than 2 times in a 12 month period then rates will increase" or something like that.

Public Storage they started to overcharge me and no one warned about it

I used the services of the company www.publicstoragereviews.com. I paid money for the storage, but these jerks started to take larger sum from me. They haven’t explained for what and they haven’t warned me that the price has been changed. I was disappointed, ‘coz it seemed like scam. I wonder if there are people, who faced the same problem? I really need help or any useful advice. Please, post your comments and ideas. Thanks.

I too, had my rent raised by over 25 dollars without any explanation. I quickly moved out. I also found out that we have been paying A MONTH AHEAD, which was not explained either. So I left owing nothing but had a month to actually move and didn't know it. Staff is friendly but I guess I would be too if I was benefiting from folk's hard earned money. Great storage facilities, but shady business dealings. :/

Public storage increased my rent from $126 to $146 last year. This year they have increased it to $171. I had a coversation with another tenant and they informed me they were moving out because of the increase. They give me the number of another storage site close by. I sequentially rented a site there, a bit smaller, but 1/2 the cost of Public Storage. Thank you Public Storage for motivating me to make a change. I wish I would have done so sooner.

Public Storage poor business practices/

I too am frustrated with Public Storage. I've been a customer since 2010. I was pressured and told that I had to carry insurance. I was also told that I had to purchase their locks. My unit doors did not go all the way to the ground so water came in every time it rained. They eventually ended up replacing the doors but charged me for new locks. My unit was also broken into and no one seemed to care. They said since their facility was gated they weren't responsible and their insurance didn't cover anything. Including damage to the doors. I even had to purchase yet ANOTHER new lock. I filed a police report but the police officer even said nothing ever happens in these cases and even said it was probably an inside job. My rent has gone up drastically every year to the sum of a 45%+ over 4 years. There has to be something we can do to fight this. I am moving my stuff at the end of the month after yet another increase was just applied to my account. Public Storage is a horrible company. They should not be allowed to take advantage of people this way. RUN far away from this company!

Public Storage john lewis, district manager

I have been a customer of Public Storage for many many years. Personally and
Professionally, I have paid Public Storage over $80, 000. Public Storage is very aware my Son has been fighting Cancer since October, 2013. One of my units has a
balance due of $206.78, today, Monday, March 23, 2015. Due to my Son passing away, Sunday, March 23, 2015, I am unable to pay the amount of $206.78. My assistant notified John Lewis, District Manager, Sunday, March 22, 2015 per "text messages 9 times" to no avail ! Monday, March 23, 2015, she notified John Lewis,
District Manager, "5 more times" to no avail ! A volunteer delivered a typed letter to
Public Storage, Monday, March 23, 2015 regarding the status and confirming the $206.78 would be paid no later than Saturday, March 28, 2015. I need every penny
for my Sons Funeral. John Lewis NEVER called, until "5-Minutes" before the Auction, today, Monday, March 23, 2015 and yelled at me that he was going to "AUCTION" my personal storage for the amount of $206.78! I am so heart broken. I just want to give up!

Public Storage fraud

The many complaints of high-pressure sales tactics regarding insurance, padlocks, inadequate security, uncleanliness and other egregious practices by Public Storage are true. But when it comes to a class action, the below information will astonish you.

This is an open letter to the employees of Public Storage as mentioned below. I have directly emailed duplicate statements to each of; Cheng Teng, John Bodach and Kenneth Lassegard of Public Storage Company with corporate offices located 701 Western Ave., Glendale, California 91201. These persons were advised this statement would be published within 24-hours after issuance (1305 hours) if there is no response from any of the aforementioned. If you are reading this statement (and others to follow) none of these Public Storage employees responded in kind.

Public Storage (NYSE: PSA), the self-storage and commercial real estate company with the orange logo and the largest mini storage company in the world with 160 million square feet, 2, 200 store fronts and over $2.2 billion in annual sales may be overcharging you for your storage unit by as much as 5%-12%. In addition, you may have been sold goods and services that were not required.

When you go to your Public Storage unit bring a tape measure. Accurately measure your usable self-storage space. There is a likelihood it does not match the dimensions you are paying for. It is thought that Public Storage units are “generally” smaller than advertised, and although the Public Storage contract incorporates a disclaimer with regards to such, a reputable Class Action law firm is reviewing the validity of such a disclaimer in light of certain facts.

Public Storage might owe you money if you are/were paying for a storage unit. Public Storage may have also have sold you goods and services and miscalculated invoices. Mr. John Bodach, Arizona and Las Vegas Regional Manger and Mr. Kenneth Lassegard, Las Vegas and Nevada District Manager were emailed an invoice with assurance from Mr. Bodach he would immediately justify the total amount charged. Five business days later I have not received a response. More than forty-eight hours ago I emailed Mr. Cheng Teng. I have not received a response from Mr. Teng whose name and email shows up on wsj.com/PSA and appears to be a direct conduit to all corporate officers inclusive of Mr. Ronald Havner, Chairman, President and CEO of Public Storage.

Please contact (reply) to this blog at [protected]@gmail.com with information regarding; dimensions of storage units, items purchased and potentially over-charged, if you felt “high-pressured’ into the purchase of products or services, if the padlock or unit Public Storage sold/rented was broken into, if you were given adequate information to determine the actual dimensions of your unit prior to initial payment.

Do Not Allow Public Storage to walk away from the above. Respond to this blog at [protected]@gmail.com to become part of a potential class action lawsuit.

On top of these grievances it should be noted that Public Storage, as a REIT or Real Estate Investment Trust, pays no federal income taxes at all. They are predators of their customers and are immune to having to support the structure of federal government that is built to support U.S. law. It is not unlike putting child molesters in charge of daycare, and enabling their immunity from criminal prosecution should they take egregious advantage of the children in their custody.

Public Storage unethical fees

This company preys on people desperate for storage space when moving. They charge an excess amount because they can. They add extra fees, require the purchase of a 'special' lock and increase rental fees without notice! Upon move out they charge for the entire month if you move out after the 6th of the month! What other company gets away with these unethical and morally wrong policies?

The Brits have a pejorative term for a person or company that engages in cunning and sneaky behavior that is "technically within the rules of the law but borders on being unethical." It is called "sharp practices." The self storage company known as Public Storage meets this criteria hands down. I pay all of our bills online through our bank. The bank...

Public Storage monopoly price fixing practices

Since the company purchased Shurgard, the profits have gone up in direct proportion to the rent increases, which are the maximum allowed. The service has gone down in the same period. They could argue that the increases are due to Shurgard charging below market rates, but it can also be argued that the market rates are being manipulated by this monopoly.

See also the nearly created SSA "Self Storage Association"

From it's website, pretty much speaks for itself:
"The Association has spent more than $3.0 million in the last three years modernizing more than 25 state lien laws"
http://www.selfstorage.org/ssa/content/navigationmenu/aboutssa/factsheet/

It's great if you can get away with it, but buying off politicians to pad one's pockets is often considered criminal behavior, even for those whom have a lot of weight to throw around. Too bad Shurgard sold out to these thugs, they used to provide a decent service for a fair price. Presumably Public Storage sees the short term gains as worth the risks that go with them, & that the any damage can be paid off in the long run. Perhaps there is a lawyer out there who is motivated to prove them otherwise.

Everything I own is in storage, as of June 2015. I am disabled and Social Security Disability is my only income. Within months of buying out AllStorage, Public Storage raised the rent on each of my 3 units, increases totaling approximately $150.00 per month making my rent $715.00 per month for the three units. This is over half my monthly income. I am physically unable to move to another location. Prior to the rate increase, I was able to pay my rent on or before the due date. I, now, have to take money from my grocery budget to pay storage rent and struggle to pay before fees begin to accrue. I've called in an attempt to get the increases reduced. Their answer was "No". Public Storage has spent a great deal of money on cosmetic changes and remodeling the facility. Clearly, they are passing on the expense to their customers. The remodeling has created units that are less secure. The office is frequently closed during business hours. Gates have been broken for months at a time ...finally repaired this past month. The facility is not nearly as clean as it was when managed by All Storage. Essentially, the product and service has decreased in value... yet, I am paying much more than I was. And Public Storage seems to be buying up the competition, so better rental rates are difficult to find. I've worked in the industry. I know this is just about profit. They do not care who they hurt. In the current economy, ...well..., lives are being destroyed.

Public Storage excessive rent increases

It appears to be the consistent business practice of Public Storage, headquartered in California, to leverage rent increases against their customers once they have their customers belongings as ransom against objections or protests against outlandish rental increases. It appears that it is a business approach that is practiced nationally by this business, which also is exempt by its incorporation status from paying federal income taxes.

My husband and I rented a unit over one year ago. We were sent a letter they were raising our rental rate $50.00 and will do so every 6 months. We are paying for the highest price for the rental unit due to it's size. The last time I paid on this unit was by check. They said the funds were not there and our bank said that check never came through the bank. They are charging us for 2 months late fees and a return check charge. Talk to people at location of unit and they said it was out of their hands I need to talk to customer service because California handles that!

I had a 10' X 20' unit from about October, 2010 to August, 2012. They illegally auctioned my unit on 8/30/2012. It was illegal because they never sent me any notice (postcards, registered or certified letters, etc.) to let me know they were doing it. Public Storage unlawful unit auction

Public storage of alexandria, va unlawfully auctioned off my storage unit last year. They failed to comply with a virginia self-storage law that says a company must notify a storage unit tenant in writing, with a registered or certified letter of the impending auction even after sending postcard notification via regular mail. If you have been the victim of a shady auction practice in your state, google "self-storage laws in [your state] for detailed information on that state's requirements. If your company did not follow that state's law, you should consult an attorney and see if there are any class-action lawsuits in that state.

The following are links to legal proceedings around the country, so do your homework-they will be on the hook for the value of the contents of your unit if you act quickly:
