In my opinion, I would never suggest working or using any of Petsmarts services or buying their products. Their treatment of workers in their Colorado stores as well as other stores is in my opinion substandard. Support with workmans comp claims and in my opinion treatment of employees with managers seeming to not have proper training working with their employees dealing with employee issues that I feel is inadequate all the way up the corporate ladder. My friends daughter was injured over a month and a half ago and is still waiting for work comp pay cannot work full time and gets very little pay/hours if any.

Please reconsider working with other companies and research or make sure you are properly protected. I work for a large corporation that actually does provide the benefits and care for their employees that they advertise and promote so keep looking and work where In my opinion you are safe and protected.

I worked in the PetSmart pet hotel for 5 years and was fired because we didn't have enough staff to get the dogs walked and I was leaving them in the playroom one at a time while I cleaned their rooms and then brought them back after. It made me mad because dogs weren't being walked and I got sick of seeing dogs in their rooms with poop and pee in there. So after getting 2 writeups for doing that and a 3rd for leaving a cat alone in the cat room to walk around because again there wasn't enough staff to get them out of their rooms for more than 5 minutes. I wish there was something I could do but policy says dogs and cats can't be left unattended. I loved working with all the dogs and wish I could get my job back but the people in charge probly wouldn't go for it because I broke policy!

Great animals/cashiers/vets/groomers. Haven't ever had a problem, love the animals and the other workers (groomers/cashiers/vets).

PetsHotel workers are HORRIBLE. I was recently hired (a few months ago) as a PetsHotel associate. I have witnessed food/water denial to the dogs, screaming, kicking, hitting (slapping), and choking via slip leash.

As an associate, I have experienced gender harassment and mental stability harassment. I mentioned offhand that I live with Asperger's Syndrome, and my higher-up turned to another higher-up, calling me "it" and saying I should be fired as I am "r*tarded". I was told to only handle the small dogs as I am female. I was also only given ten minutes for my lunch break instead of half an hour, and denied both my other mandated breaks.

I gave my two weeks to leave to care for my mother after a much-needed back-to-back set of surgeries. The night I gave my notice, I was forced to clock back in and physically dragged into the pethotel office, chewed out for half an hour about how I was being selfish and "not a team player". All for wanting to help my MOTHER.

I do not know why this company is not being investigated. They appear to violate the law and treat their employees abysmally. A company will not be successful with the attitude that employees are expendable. Apparently no one cares.
Lack of training, low pay, disrespect and uncaring management appear to be their policy The big ( thought) public relations policy is a customer can bring the pet to the store when they shop. Big deal. How about treating their employees as they would like to be treated.

PetSmart is a dysfuctional and sociopathic company. The entire company is built on a house of cards and fraudulent reporting. Yes, while there may be store managers and a DM or two who have been ably to rectify the insanity that comes down from the Home Office- the majority of store managers, DMs, and Regionals are bullies, liars, and thieves. They get by with this by covering for each other so it becomes a club of dysfuctionality.
I can only think their is either a complete disconnect in what is going on in the field or that the entire company is rotten to the core.

First of all I just want to say that I agree with most of the complaints I've read through. I see a lot of complaining about terrible managers with no training throwing newbies straight into the fire. I just want to say that I am a Pet Care manager at my store and I agree that associates are generally treated like garbage. It makes me sick. That's why I always split my bonuses evenly with my team because without them I am nothing. However, associates don't always see the underlaying issues that we deal with. Well except for my team since I make sure they stay well informed of the problems our corporate office dumps on us daily.

Our corporate office is the most dysfunctional piece of bureaucracy that I have ever had the misfortune to experience. Getting the CO to acknowledge a problem is a nightmare and getting them to actually do something about it is worse than pulling teeth. Eating a brick would be an easier task. We have to schedule in such a way that the hours match some stupid graph derived from some archaic formula based on the previous years sales. We're expected to be flexible with the way we schedule yet the system prevents us from doing it and then we're reprimanded when we fail the impossible task we're given. It's the same thing with our supply budget. If I order the BARE minimum amount of bedding for the month I go over budget. This does not include food, store use, chew sticks, chemicals, filters, etc... God forbid we get 24 guinea pigs with URI, ringworm, pregnant or a combination of the three from the evil Rainbow Exotics.

We're given exactly FIVE hours for Pet Care training (opening, closing, selling skills, customer service, the 5 million ever changing p&ps we're somehow supposed to know, animal care, etc...) which is simply not enough time and then the poor new associates are pushed into the great unknown and then get punished for not correctly doing tasks that they were never properly trained how to do in the first place. These FIVE hours are usually just thrown in somewhere with another associate who barely has enough time to make sure the animals get fed let alone train anyone on anything. All of my associates have my number in case they run into a problem when I'm not around. I often find myself at home sitting at my desk training new associates over the phone. It's absurd. This is why so many Pet Smart employees at so many stores report having mean managers. At least at my store, our management team is so frustrated by the lack of resources we're provided to do our jobs that any little mistake from an associate can push us over the edge. I am not making excuses for terrible managers as we're all responsible for how we act but the CO is the real problem.

We had a visit from our Regional Vice President not too long ago and this made it painfully clear how disconnected the CO really is from the store. She nailed us to the wall on policies that didn't exist, reprimanded me for following the advice of a vet just because it didn't exactly mesh with an irrelevant policy and then she proceeded belittled one of my newer Pet Care girls when she didn't know the answer to a question. At that point I slammed the RVP for her lack of foresight, lack of leadership skills, lack of pet knowledge, and a general lack of understanding about anything (much to the dismay of our store director who has since been fired for stealing). She's made my life a living hell ever since and all I did was point out flaws in the logic she was using. If she were smarter she'd take a step back and learn something instead of pulling rank and going on a power trip. I don't give a damn who you are, do NOT under any circumstance treat my people like trash and expect me to sit there and do nothing.

There's just so many problems that I can't even begin to list them all here. Just please try to understand that many managers are in the same situation the associates are in. They're hired into positions with pitiful training, given impossible tasks, and then expected to overachieve.

A friend of mine works at a Petsmart in Chicago. They treat her abysmally. She's older than the rest of the staff at the hotel, and the younger ones treat her like dirt. Her supervisor(s) were/are a bunch of jerks. They make fun of her not in front of her but where she could hear them. The hotel manager actually tried to take her overtime hours away from her, which is totally illegal and should have gotten her fired, but my sister said don't do it - just wanted the hours. She got in trouble. Now the staff is finding ways to pick on her. I told her what they're doing is totally illegal and you could get their ### in a mound of trouble. They treat her like she doesn't know anything. The younger ones get preferential treatment while she gets the short end of the stick. The animals in the hotel aren't well taken care of, especially the cats. Her supervisor said that dogs bring in more income than cats so more attention is paid to them. Even though the attention isn't that great either. They don't follow the pet parents' instructions. And don't even do what the pet parent paid for. Hardly anyone at the hotel cleans and waits for my friend to come in and do it for them, and the boss doesn't say a thing. She doesn't call in sick - even though she has a lot of health problems. But they give her trouble when she does. I wish some news organization would do a piece on this company. Another friend of mine is a lawyer that handles workplace problems and is biting at the bit to get this company to court. God forbid if something happens to her and they express their phony concern, I will lay it on them big time and write a letter to the head of the company and to animal rights organizations. It just breaks my heart to see her treated like this. The company I work for would NEVER allow this to happen; believe me, I've seen them in action. How PetSmart can get away with all these illegal activities is beyond me.

My friend called me up on the phone in tears. She said her store manager had a talk with her about how she's not finishing her work on time. My friend has been talking about this problem for months and she says she has repeatly asked for help at doing her job better but her superiors only want to complain about how slow she is a her tasks. Her managers are always comparing her to other employees and how they are better and faster but they ignore her requests to be trained with these other emplyees. I'm am very angry. I have been training employees at my job for 20 yrs and enjoy helping and employee improve.

I agree with every single post regarding Petsmart and their treatment of their employees. I have been with the company almosy 5 years and I am an older worker...They practice age discrimination BIG time in the company.Older workers are NOT given a chance to advance and do indeed carry the work load while younger ones they hire who not only show up LATE every single day, openly show tattoos, do NOT want to be anywhere near the register (when thay are hired as a cashier) who use any excuse POSSIBLE to get away from the register like having to go to the bathroom every five minutes so somebody else will take their place at the register are made LEAD cashiers and fast tracked to support managers..It is ridiculous...These people are never spoken to about their lateness or laziness=they are PROMOTED...They are never spoken to about company policy regarding COVERING tattoos etc... This company is a joke...They always have advance notice when there will be an inspection from yhe district manager etc. so things can be covered up... AS for breaks=that's a whole other story... WE who DO stand the register doing their job, are NEVER late, comply to all company policy have to BEG for a break..It is a VERY sad situation in that company and like others I intend to hold on UNTIL they FIRE me and I too will collect..The company should be reported for age discrimination as well...They do NOT like or want people with work ethics... The working conditions are deplorable..I thought maybe it was just my store, but I see this sort of thing is going on all across the board and I find that DISGUSTING.. I was made a lead cashier when I spoke my mind to one of the managers (who is no longer there) and promised 30 hours a week never got it...They started CUTTING my hours..lol.New lead immediately got 30 hours=rewarded for being a slacker(being late, tattoos showing etc.) and is NOW being fast tracked for support manager... I am 66 and believe me it has been AGE discrimination... I detest working there and IF I could get another job at my age (which is a problem) I would walk out the door and expose them for what they are. to anybody and everybody. Oh and we have had 4 store managers in a short span of time...last one was fired for having a sexual relationship with an associate.. Another manager did the same-is still there and the girl he was sleeping with was PROMOTED to manager ( slept her way to the top)/..Wish more people would speak out against what they are enduring at their store!

I work at a PetSmart in Florida and holy God I have never seen such a lazy and disrespectful store manager as the one I work with. Most of the employees I work with are wonderfulcaring people but god forbid you piss off one of the GM's favorites and you get coaching session in the office. I have been there three times, THREE! after I told one of the petcare managers that another employee was making fun of my sexual orientation. That employee just so happened to be our GM's favs and was told by our GM of how I had an attitude with that employee the day before. Our managers aren't trained well at all and the one manager who does actaully care about the store gets treated like crap. A few of our leads think they're mamangers with one telling me not to listen to them. Work in starbucks or an office this company is not worth your time.

I have been an employee in PetCare for 6 months now at a new store. I may not be perfect, but I have given 110% and sacrificed my family and friends for this job. Everyone is so afraid of being fired that my co-workers are turning on each-other. The managers are super nice, but they make comments about people's "imperfections" and say they aren't worth training. They hire new employees constantly and throw them into a job with next to no training. When these people make mistakes they are threatened of being fired.
My co-workers are amazing and bright people, every single one of them have had a positive attitude and kept strict to procedure. They've babied the animals and are very careful about who they sell a pet too. Instead of reporting my co-workers mistakes, I personally assistant them with guidance and fix whatever was wrong. I was told by a manager that I need to let these employees "fall on their face" and report them. I don't feel that is fair. Because of this I have been demoted to floor cleaner.
In the past 2 weeks, our best two employees have left and the managers claim the store had to fire them because of their bad attitude. These two employees did more that anyone else and would have been the best long term employees. I believe they had to leave because Petsmart was putting the store's needs over the employees' health. Another co-worker badly injured her foot, and they forced her long hours on cashier, her foot swelling in pain. I tried calling in sick one day because I spent all night puking my guts up from food poisoning, the manager said I had no choice but to come in since no one could cover me. Yet I have cover over a dozen shifts in the past month of other employees.
Many people in the store have admitted to resenting me because they thought I was full time, it turns out no one in the store is full time, even though half of the staff has pleaded for it. Those who requested less hours so they could get their school work done are given more hours each week, and those who plead for more hours to pay bills are given the minimum.
I believe I have no choice but to leave this store soon and try another. Because the childish banter and getting at each-others throat attitude isn't what I signed up for. I made 2 mistakes in my 6 months, which I admitted to and they now have slammed me with a final warning. I was never shown the correction for these mistakes, and they only notified me with a warning.
I am going to call up today employee assistance to get advice on how I can stay with the company, but switch to a more stable store.

I use to work for Petsmart in Signal Hill, California a few years back, I had got hurt and workmens comp refused to pay, I feel that more needs to be done for the other people that do, has, or will work for Petsmart. I feel that I was wrongly treated by the management and others.

I had a similar experience at a job training for a casual dining restaurant at an airport. I was to have 2 weeks on job training, the first day of training was fast and not much help, the cooks would show you how to do the job one time then leave you, as the orders were coming in I was horrified not knowing where things were, how exactly to do the job. I told the manager about the lack of training and she said I was not comprehending, she never once watched to see what was going on. As the days past I felt like I became the joke of the kitchen, they would do things like unscrew lids to pour out when I used them, loudly talk down to me if I did something wrong, just make me look bad at their conveinence. No matter how hard I tried they just did'nt want me there. At the end of the day I felt like a total loser. I really needed this job but I could tell it was not to be, the employees (trainers) and management should be called in front of the labor board.

I would not reccomend Petsmart to any individual seeking employment at any age. The "turn over" for their associates and management members is HUGE. They are so busy hiring and firing that the training is completely inadaquate, and what they end up with is inferior work force.

Petsmart is one of the worst places to work in my opinion. The employees are underpayed, unappreciated, and treated absolutely unfair. I've been there about 2 years now and gone through 4 different store managers and not one has had the correct attitude. They treat it like high school where if your not in with the "popular kids" i.e. the managers, then you are no one and no matter how good a worker, no matter how much you prove yourself you are still shunned at the end of the day. The pay just is NOT worth the petty dramas and the loads of stress. I'm in total agreeance with LostMapServerMan when he says just to stick it out as long as possible until I find another job or until they come up with a reason to fire me, and yes I will be filing for unemployment if/when the day arrives.

Oh and btw if you live in Michigan I work at the one in Dearborn with the shady store manager Mr. Popovich. He's currently trying to rid the store of all his "problematic" workers all the while bringing in his friends from his old store.

I just started with Petsmart. I have had very little training at all. And yet I am being treated like I am supposed to know everything. How can anybody get in trouble for something they have not been shown or told how to do? Gona stick it out as long as I can for the pay and benefits. But keeping eye out for better job. I have bills we all do I will not quit they want me gone they gona have to fire me so I can get unemployment or wait till I find new job.

Treatment of PetSmart employees is dismal in many areas. I worked for the company in both Michigan and California and while I had hope for a different experience in California it was just the same stuff, different cast of characters. Told by the store director that "we were the worst group of people she had ever worked with, and she wouldn't want to work in the grooming room either" Policies and Procedures ignored when convienient. Quoted when beneficial to the bottom line. Less than two weeks after finding out that I kept a journal of store activities I was "let go". Agree with comments above.

My girlfriend has been a petsmart employee for 15 years. She has been a manager for around half of that time. She just found out yesterday that she could be fired for something that she had been doing for months and was never corrected or talked to by a higher ranking supposedly more trained manager. Not only are they threatenign to fire her but they are telling her that they will have to "sleep on it" and tell her one way or the other the day after thanksgiving. So they just ruined our holiday together. I myself would not work for petsmart ever and would not recommend working there for anyone they dont know how to treat there employees and there people skills in general are non existant.

I resigned from PetSmart in June, the only reason that I stayed with them so long was the health insurance coverage for my children. I worked in the Petcare Dept. and the PetsHotel, employees were bullied, belittled, and cheated out of hours on their paychecks in Texas. Instead of encouraging a more educated workforce, Managers demoted and cut the hours of college students. Older workers had the bulk of the work load in every department; dumped on them. Complaints about the lack of breaks resulted in "coaching sessions". After working conditions became intolerable, I called corporate for help. They sent an HR representative, who did fire one Manager. But, the remainder of the poorly trained management team was left intact. After showing the store manager and district manager proof of fraud and improper behavior by the pethotel manager, they could not look me in the eye. They looked at the floor; and thanked me for my concern. Soon after; I received a thirty-nine cent pay raise.
Working for PetSmart does absolutely nothing for your resume...it is a complete waste of your time and talent! I wish that former employees would file a " Class-Action" lawsuit against the company for their abuse of employees.
