I think that Amazon.Com as a company has very unscrupulous practices. I purchased a Garmin GPS, a Kindle, and a few small accessories for my daughter for Christmas. I placed the order last Friday 10/18. I paid $348 for the order. Amazon has a policy that you are not charged for the order until it is shipped. L I E ! They charged me for the entire order the day I placed it and I have been waiting since Oct 18th for it all to ship. I have called them several times over the past days asking where my order is and why I was charged since it never shipped. Their customer service is mostly outsourced to India- and I was treated with apathy and poor customer service from the first call onward. Bottom line is no one knew why my paid for order did not ship and I kept getting told that it would ship "tomorrow." Finally after 6 days I had it and cancelled my order. I then called my bank and asked when the authorization would get removed. I was told it never was an authorization and that Amazon was paid in full- completely contrary to their publicized billing policy. I called my bank today and they got on the phone with Amazon and Amazon insisted that the charge was only an authorization and never a charge and it would drop off by Friday. My bank rep flat out told the Amazon rep that I was being lied to and that Amazon knows they charged me before shipping. After 15 minutes of arguing Amazon admitted they did charge me and did not just place a temporary authorization. Now they tell me I will get my refund 7-10 BUSINESS days from today. My bank rep told them it was highly unorthodox to take that long to refund me esp when they were paid electronically and received their funds Immediatley on Oct 18. Needless to say Amazon lost me as a customer forever. I tried calling management again tonight to discuss the riff raf but they never connected me with a manager and I was disconnected after being placed on hold for over 10 minutes. I have spent thousands of dollars at Amazon over the years and never had a problem until this order fiasco. I was told the refund process in in place and being processed- but still being upset tonight I called Amazon again tonight at 7:22pm EST and the customer service rep can find no refund activity in process. I am so upset tonight I am speechless and angry. I am a single parent with a daughter at home and want my money returned immediately- the rep placed me on hold countless times seemingly hoping I would hang up. All she could do was submit my complaint to billing for review. This is so wrong on so many levels. I will never ever do business with Amazon.com ever again

I've found this sometimes happens if a third party seller is involved because Amazon is not the shipper--it bills at the moment the order is confirmed by the third party. Was everything in your order listed as being sold by Amazon directly or was it from someone else using an Amazon storefront?

I buy from an Amazon a lot, often preordering something up to 6 months ahead, and this is the only instance under which I've been charged prior to shipping. If this is the case, though, I don't know why they wouldn't just say that on the phone with you.
