Nationwide Insurance Company will cancel your policy by saying you have a past due balance. That you probably don't have, then when you find out it's already too late to do anything. They will tell you the policy lapsed and you have to reapply for reinstatement, then they deny you coverage. In my case they new I had some recent health issues and would not qualify for a medical exam for reinstatement. They could have just accepted my payment, even though I can show proof that I was paid in full. I have my check numbers and bank statements to show the checks were cashed. They tied to do the same thing to my wife, but we got the termination letter with one day to spare and rushed the payment over to them, or they would have canceled her policy too.

I haven't even had my policy long enough to get documents through the mail. It went from a quoted $100 to over $380 on a letter sent to me. Nowhere on the letter was there any contact information to find out what had happened. Trying to call the company was rediculous and I was passed back and forth many times without ever talking to anyone with the power to help. Promised return phone calls were never received. Customer sewrvice is on their terms only. You can do anything that puts money in there pocket over the phone or internet, but if you want to cancel & get a refund you have to play their game and wait as long as they think is necessary.

So I'm not in the same boat as this last guy, but I know his frustration with this company that has absolutly no clue how to retain a customer (let alone not piss them off).

Same here. Upped my premiums 40% with no explanation. This after twenty plus years of continuous coverage and zero claims. When I called to cancel, might as well have been talking to a robot. Doesn't seem to me that they want to retain customers...

I would like to bring to your attention to my story concerning Nationwide Insurance, which is my opinion is a ripoff and should be made known to the American public.

I am contacting ALL news sources, have posted my story in several chat sites, blogs, and search engines, and authored two press releases, scheduled for release on December 20, 2009. Each tells of my horror story with the Nationwide Insurance Company, and each should be ranked in the top ten searches for Nationwide Insurance.

I will continue to submit my story to as many news portals as possible, averaging three a day at this point.

I feel that anyone considering obtaining insurance through Nationwide be made known of my experience, as well as others that I have listed at the bottom of this letter. There are tons of complaints about Nationwide on the Internet, and this company should be researched closely before obtaining their services.

A letter dated December 14, 2009 was sent to their corporate office, but they ignored this as well, which in my opinion is stating that they are aware of negligent practices, but refuse to do anything about it. I have also enclosed that letter on this letter for your convenience.

I am stunned that companies such as Nascar and PBS, that have an honest reputation would associate with a company that has so many complaints and bogus remarks against them.

Since my incident, I have told countless customers of mine about Nationwide, and thankfully have talked three people thus far into leaving nationwide when their contract is up.

LETTER DATED DEC 14, 2009

Dear Nationwide Insurance:


I am writing to let you know that I will be informing everyone I know about the horrendous and totally deplorable business practices you offer with homeowners. I will also be posting my experience on my website, “xxxxxxxxxxxxx”, which draws over 5000 customers a year so that they too will be informed of the way nationwide deceives clients.

On or around December 7, 2009, I called a claim in because my basement had over 3 inches of water in it. Nationwide sent out Paul Davis Restoration, and as of this letter, they still have yet to pull their equipment out of our basement because of the amount of water that was on our floor.

The next day, Nationwide sent out the claim adjuster, Catherine Bradley, and some other guy that acted like he knew his head from the ground. The first words out of his mouth were, “This isn’t covered.”

When he did his investigation, he said there was a pipe protruding from our wall that most likely came from a window well that had been covered up with a driveway. This was done before we bought this house, so we really knew nothing about it.

The pipe joined another pipe in our basement, and they led to a pump that pumped any condensation water out of the house through a small hose. This guy from Nationwide said, “Oh that’s illegal.”

Here’s a note for you. It is NOT illegal and you should not tell people it is. I hired my own plumber (something that this guy was not), and he said he was full of it.

When this guy and Catherine were leaving, they said, “We’re going to have a plumber call you back either tonight or tomorrow at the latest.”

After four days went by, I had to call Nationwide to see why I hadn’t been contacted yet.

Today, they sent out “Perti Plumbing” who states on the phone that he is a Nationwide Plumber. He checked out our basement for fifteen minutes and said, “The only thing I can figure is that all that water came through the sealed up driveway and that’s what I’m putting into my report.”

He had no rationale for his statement, and when questioned how after five years, that much water could come through a driveway, he said, “Its possible. I’ve seen weirder things.”

I asked him how he knew my water tank didn’t overflow since they have float switches that always stick. He said because it wouldn’t have shown a brown mark on the ground where my relief valve was.

I point blank asked him how so much water could possibly get into a sealed up driveway, which never had a drop before, and didn’t have a drop from this weekends rain which was worse, and his response was…”I’ve seen it.”

Words of a true Nationwide plumber.

Now in the meantime, I hired my own plumber who came out, investigated and said, “Anyone that states that this was from that pipe is lying. There is NO WAY I can say it came from there. And is more unlikely that it did.”

On Sunday, I stood outside and let my garden hose run on top of the place on the driveway that they said water got through. It ran for 9 hours. NOT ONE DROP got in.

›› Damage was done to everything. It is a finished basement with WW carpeting less than a year old.

I have taken over 25 pictures of my own, (not ones that Nationwide wants to show), and will be submitting my complaint to every news site, every complaint board, the Bureau of Insurance fraud, Better Business Bureau, PA Insurance Bureau, PA Attorney General.

From the tone of your letter, I'd say YOU were the one trying to pull something. Or, maybe you were too lazy to Read your Policy. HEY EVERYBODY! READ YOUR POLICIES! Not everything is covered, and there are limits to how much you can get. YOU choose the limits by how much YOU choose to pay. A pipe in your basement? why didn't you know? didn't you check out the house before you bought it? Your ignorance is NOT the insurance company's problem. It's possible for a driveway to leak; it's more likely that the water seeped under the drive. Or through the footings. Rising water is often NOT covered; nor are floods on many policies. You need a separate FLOOD policy if you are in a specified flood zone, by the way. Or do you have a pool? Did it overflow? Did the neighbor have a leak? Maybe you have a claim on HIS policy!

Anyone saying they were told their balance was past due-well, it was. A computer sends out notices for almost ALL the companies now. There IS a phone number on your policy jacket, on the declaration page, and on the bills. (LOOK at your policy jacket, please) Believe me, the company would prefer you pay; it costs money to rewrite a policy, besides the fact that all those customer service people get paid for their time on the phone with you. Late is ok; if you have a good reason, late fees can even be waived once or twice (but not every month; ask to have your due date MOVED.) You're more likely to get a helpful response if you just SAY, "oops, I goofed up; can you help me?"
Some policies can't be reinstated; some can, but with a penalty, and some will just be OK'd the way they are.
