National Readers Service scam collections

Every so often I'll receive a call from this company asking if I'm receiving magazines or not and if I'm satisfied with them. EVERY time I respond that I've NEVER signed up to receive them in the first place to which they have no answer . I ask to cancel EVERY time. Recently I received a call from them inquiring whether I still want to cancel to which I again said yes because I didn't sign up in the first place. Then she informed me that they will cancel me only if I pay $495! This company is running a scam and needs to be stopped!

National Readers Service magazine subscription

I want to cancel my subscription. Every time I have called I have been told I have x number of months to complete my subscription. When it comes to the month the subscription is supposed to end some how it gets renewed. It has been renewed several times and I have been told I can't do anything about it. When the hurricane hit the east coast I was told client information had been lost and all subscriptions were extended. If this isn't resolved I will engage the services of a lawyer.

National Readers Service phone calls every day

They call me every day.
I don't owe them anything. One lady said she had my account information so I ask her to tell me my charge card information she read off some number not mine. Then she said they had my banking Information but I would have to give her the numbers she can't read them to me. I told her that wouldn't work for me. She hung up on me.

National Readers Service magazines

I would like to cancel my subscription to this, please inform me what you need for me to cancel. I find it odd that after 6 weeks i have still yet to receive any magazines. please inform me.

Nothing was ever said when they called about paying monthly until they called back, still seemed like a good idea. Then upon thinking about it and getting a letter telling me how much it was going to cost, did not seem right, therefore i need to cancel. Ann Kniepkamp

National Readers Service I've not gotten any products

I was called by [protected] about magazine perscriptions and told the total for this month would be $1.95, I decided to check my account balance and they had taken almost $50.00 out of my account without my permission, which threw me into a deficit and now I have to pay a $38.00 overdraft fee. I'm disabled and on a fixed income I can't afford for this sort of thing to keep happening. after I talked to a customer service rep at the bank, they gave me the phone number of the magazine company, so I called them, and when I told them they were being deceptive and wanted no part of company and wanted the money back in my account that they were not authorized to take out to begin with, they said I was being very rude and they didn't want to talk to me anymore, and the money would be back in my account at the end of the business day. I checked my balance this morning and they haven't done anything. I'm still overdrawn.
after all this crap I've changed my banking information, again and about to change my phone number this is twice in the last 4 months this has happened, the last time was a different company. Anyway there should be something that can be done about these companies that are so deceptive.

National Readers Service Unsolicited calls to a number on the federal do not call registry

i was called by a number i cannot call back, was told i had won a ipod touch. i knew it was a scam so i started asking questions about how they got my name or who entered me into the contest. after a few more questions she just hung up. called National Readers Service to ask why the were calling a number registered on the Federal Do Not Call List (useless waste of taxpayer money that is), she said "that's a good question", then proceeded with her sales pitch, when i interrupted again, she got snitty and hung up. called National Reader Services number, and was told those calls are generated from their "sales department" that has, wait for it ~ no incoming phone service, just out going. i asked the feeble brain trust i was speaking to if she was a "Christian" since she had one of those Southern outhouse state accents, and she said she was. so i asked "then why are employed by a criminal phone scam enterprise? is that how Jesus worked part time to buy carpenter tools?" the call went downhill from there. no, they didn't get me to buy a subscription, because i'm not as stupid as the rest of you, who, quite frankly, i don't understand how any of you reached the age of relative maturity in a world teeming with toxic substances and sharp objects. what i did do is tie up there 800 phone lines with endless calls and heaps of obscenities. note: they may hang up but the line stays live, charging them corporate rates for 800 minutes. so get all your friends to call them, put the phone down and leave it off the hook for an hour at a time and start making them bleed cash. then find a responsible adult to help you manage your finances and to answer your phones ~ because most of you are too stupid to have a credit card! PS: call you f'ng credit card company and cancel the charge! enter the 21st century ~ a mind and a credit score are terrible things to waste.

National Readers Service Not a good company to get involved with

When I first got a call from them i started up with them at 59.99 per month for 5 years and when i was told to i can cancel i was told that it has to be done with in the first 7 days of starting the subscription. i thought it was 7 days after i received and that is usually how it works but every time i called t cancel the subscription they said that i can not cancel my subscription to them and if i stop payments going to them then they will mess up my credit. when i threaten to sue them they said that they have proof that i entered in to contract with them via word of mouth according to maryland state law word of mouth contract is good and binding but only if it is for one year and under 500 dollars worth of products being exchanged and i have paid them over $708 and with 3 more years to go but i changed my pricing to 29.90 and added 28 more months before i am done paying.

National Readers Service fraud

These people called and said I had been entered into a sweepstakes. It sounded legit, until they asked for my credit card. I was reluctant, and the guy I was talking to said, there's a customer service card number you can call, I'm 27 with 3 kids, I'm not going to go to jail over magazines. He made a joke and I relaxed, so I was stupid and gave my number to him. I'm sure I'm going to be billed some awful amount, just for being gullible. How do I fix this?

Don't even get ME started! I, too, was duped. But they have started a new tactic...going by 2 names to get you to pay, and showing 2 different totals, hoping you'll be gullible to think, "Oh God, I signed up for 2 of these!" However, when pressed you get the same service date. Hmm.

Lookout not only for National Readers Service but ALSO Midwest Publishers Inc.!

Better yet. Just don't do it! If anyone does a cold call to you tell them to take your name off their list as that is the law. If you are already on the DO NOT CALL list tell them that and that they just broke the law. See who can hang up the fastest then!

Wish I had been the wiser back in March. Still fighting my strategy using the BBB, FTC, State AG, Consumer Affairs, and the list goes on. The more complaints I can file (and print to send to these 2 companies in response to their bully tactics) the better off I hope we will all be in the end. If they took you for a ride, file away too!

National Readers Service - Magazine subscription scam

OK, last week I didn't know anything about National Readers Service. After dealing with these people on my daughter's behalf, that's certainly no longer the case. At this point, National Readers Service has verbally agreed to close her account with no balance, no bills in the future, any additional magazines received after this cancellation are her gift at...

National Readers Service Unable to cancel

So, I made a big mistake and got involved with United Readers Service Inc. It sounded good and I jumped right in. I did not record any phone calls, and I did not keep the paperwork they sent me (big mistake). I am now told that I was given 10 days to cancel my subscription but I remember being told I could cancel at any time. I am now going to be getting magazines and paying $60.00 for another 13 months and then an additional $20 for like 15 months after that. I have tried on several occasions to cancel my subscription but have been told that I am committed to the full amount of money and time. United Readers Service Inc. offered to lower my monthly payment and extend the time but the amount would be the same. I have tried to stop payment through my bank and was told that since I gave up my credit card number, there was nothing they (the bank) could do. I am at a loss for any next step.

1. Don't get into bed with these people.

2. If you have any ideas about how to better deal with this situation, I would appreciate your advice.

Thanks

National Readers Service Scam and fraud

During the month of May, I had received a toll-free call on my cell phone on my way back home from work. I didn't get a chance to look at the number and flipped open the phone. On the other side of the receiver I was told that I was chosen to win a $1000.00 dollar sweepstakes. I asked what were the details of the sweepstakes and the company told me the only way for me to enter the sweepstakes was to order some magazines from a partner company of theirs. I agreed because I was looking into some magazine subscriptions at borders. I was immediately switched over to a deep mans voice who asked me how my day was and if I was interested in buying some magazines. I told him I was, but how much was it going to cost me? He talked extremely fast and there was a lot of people yelling and screaming in the background. I asked him where he was that was causing all the noise. He told me there was a party at the pub he was at and he was actually off duty but was making a special phone call for me. Once again, I asked him how much the subscription would cost and suddenly he started talking really fast saying something about 19.99 a month and it would be over a 4 year contract. I agreed stupidly and suddenly he was again talking really fast about something being recorded and I couldn't cancel after making the pact. He asked me to say "Yes" or "No" to the following questions. I listened as hard as I could as he spoke fast asking me if my name and occupation were correct and I responded, "Yes". After he got done with the yes or no questions, he asked for my credit card number and I gave him my debit card number. He also wanted my Social Security Number, but I refused to give it to him and he told me he understood. After he was done, he reviewed my information really fast and I could barely understand what he was saying, so I just responded yes. He then hung up on me and i felt like I was just scammed. About 3 days later, I received a letter in the mail that was about an inch thick crammed with paperwork. I opened it up and it said that I had signed up for some random services I never agreed to such as: ID ALERT, FRAUD PROTECTION, INSURANCE, ect. On all the papers it said I was going to be billed around 39.95 for each month for all these products. I was enraged because I never signed up for these, only the magazines. I had to leave for work so I didn't get a chance to call the company back. The next day I called the number on the paper work that they sent me and I told the woman on the phone my name and that i wanted to cancel my subscription. The lady was EXTREMELY rude and said "OK.." and then just hung up. I was unsure if my subscription was truly canceled, or if I was being lied to. I waited about a month and I didn't notice any more money being wired out of my account...Until the 15th of the month came around and I was billed 59.65 from two different places, none that actually came from the location the man told me of! I watched my account and it was being drained every 2 days instead of only once a month, and it was no longer 19.99, it was 69.00! I called the number the company gave me again and I told them that I canceled my subscription 2 months ago and I was still being billed. They told me they would switch me over to their supervisor and the problem would be handled. In the background, I could hear screaming again and people saying things such as, "YEAH MAN, WOO, ALRIGHT" the person who answered the phone and didn't give me her name when I asked her, she just changed the topic onto what I was asking her about. I told her I can celled my account and I was still being billed. She told me she was sorry about that and she would get to working on that. I told her thank you and then she started talking really fast and saying things like, "Instead of canceling your payments, since you made a recorded pact, you have to finish your payments and then it will be renewed." I told her over and over that I WANTED TO CANCEL! She kept pushing me and pushing me to not cancel the account and she would just lower the payments. I asked her how much she would lower the payments and that I was angry because I NEVER received any magazines from them. She asked me how old I was and I told her 19. She said I had to be 21 to have the payments lowered anymore, so she said she would put on my application that I was 21. I didn't think that was even ILLEGAL! She said she could lower my payments from 69.95 to 59.30 for 30 months. She didn't speak slow, as normal. Suddenly I was in another recording pledging my pact I could hear kids screaming in the background and I asked her what was going on, she told me there was a party in the office and she was making a special call for me. I then KNEW I was being scammed. The lady didn't even give me a chance to say anything and was getting pushy about me answering yes or no. She rambled on and I didn't understand a single word and when I asked her to repeat, she got rude and impatient. I also was getting fed up with these people. I just hung up. After that incident, I WATCH my bank account and suddenly I was being billed from FOUR different locations again! I called my bank and disputed the charges I could. I asked my grandfather what I should do, because no matter how many times i call asking to cancel, they always pushed me into lowering my payments. He told me to call the Attorney Office in your state and report them. Before I made this report, I called a day ago to speak to the company about canceling again, but the lady who answered just got rude with me saying I couldn't cancel because I wasn't done with my payments and just hung up on me. I want to put these people behind bars. I am not the only one they have scammed. I have read online complaints about this company on how they always charge more then they say they are and go by 3 different names. I feel that I have been unfairly cheated out of my money and I just want them to stop billing me. I am fresh out of high school and I don't want my credit to be bad before college. Please help me to solve this problem. The address for the company is as follows: National Readers Service 1709 South Braddock Avenue #166 Pittsburgh, PA 15218 Phone number: [protected] Open Monday-Friday 9am-8pm

I worked for this scam company for 3 days, and the loud noise is the call center. It is total chaos! they told us to talk fast and sound urgent so people will impulse buy and not think to hard about the REAL price of their magazine subscription. I quit because they were mad at me for not pushing the issue when people told me they could not afford it or were just not interested. I said I will ask again may once or maybe twice but I WILL NOT KEEP ASKING UNTIL THEY BUY OR HANG UP ON ME! I said I do not like that to be done to me and I will not do it to others. They said all sales are like that. The said have you been to car dealership? I said the difference is I went there looking for a car, so I really want to buy a car. this calling people at home for something they do not want and I am intruding on their personal space! I should have known they were a shifty company when I applied because the ad said %10.00 an hour and when i got hired I was min wage and i hade to make 30-40 sales per week to get $10.00 an hours. My apologies to every one I called! I am in desperate need of a job, but not enough that I will cheat people out of their money and be a nuisance!

Well I completely agree with taking these people to court! They are scamming anyone they can. I've been dealing with them for several years now. The first time I just paid it no big deal. I was young and didn't pay attention. This time around they tried to tell me I hadn't fully paid for my subscription. I want the money back that they took and I want them shut down. If you look at the other National Reader Service complaint boards many of us have talked about filing a complaint with the Attorney General.

At this point I don't want to see anyone else scammed. They need to be shut down for fraud!
Kristina,
This time I've been fighting with them for two years. They have threatened to take me to court and play the tape (of which I requested a copy) and ruin my credit. Since this incident in October of 2007 there has been nothing on my credit reflecting this company or any of their umbrella companies. Stay strong and don't give in to them.

Claire

I got scammed last year. I think they were the same people, different name. They talked fast also, and they recorded me. I had a gut feeling it was a scam, but they called me on my cell, telling me I won a trip. I asked them how did they get my number etc. they told me from my credit card company and it’s affillates . So I thought it was legit. They got me for several hundred of dollars. And I get magazines that I don’t read, and did not get my Vegas trip. Didn’t get no refund, even when they reported to Better Business guys. O.K besides reporting them to the attorney office, you sould report them to the BBB in their state Pittsburgh PA. Next register your cell number to do not call list. Next close your account and open up a new one, tell them you got scammed, and they have your info. I hope this help you out and I hope this info. gets to you. Some guy is trying to gather all the people they scammed and take these guys to court, this was when I was trying to get help from other people, using the internet. The problem is that they keep changing their name, and location. I hope you’re a real person and your situation is not fictional. And you guys(Scammers) just post this to do research. If so, you guys need to get an honest job, and work for their money like everyone else. Stop doing these evil things, everyone is suffering from the economy. I got a feeling you’re a real person, I posted the same long story. I wish you the best.

Kristina,
National Readers Service scammed my 19 year old in June 2009. I filed a complaint nearly identical to yours yesterday. I don't know if this is an option for you, but talk to a parent if you can. Also specific suggestions for dealing with this scam are on my blog www.theNRSscam.blogspot.com
Good luck! D/

Can you just stop paying the National Reader Service? Because I noticed I told them I wanted to cancel because I don't even read these magazines and I didn't want it in the first place they trick people into doing the contest etc. I only paid with Money Orders not check or debit /credit cards ..But is it a good idea to just stop paying them since its a scam and alot of customers have complained to BBB.

I Am NOT Receiving the product that I've paid for! Your Bank should help you against Scammers. My said they will help fight this. They have filed a dispute claim and "black listed" them against taking money from my account! Now, with all the documentation throughout your sources, you can use these with the credit companies that call for collection. There is not reason why you should pay for something that you don't receive! Also, when you call them and they say that you cannot cancel the subscription!? That's alot of money they have put into their own pockets---out of yours. We need to all get together here and put them out of business, once and for all! Nice future for our families!

I know every customer goes through about a 45 min process with the sells person and yes they are convicing! They will do their best and rebut until you say yes or hang up. However Every customer has to verbally agree to all the terms in order for the order to be processed. You all are making a commitment to make all monthly payments then opt out because you just think of the MONEY! The sweepstakes are real! You don't have to buy the magizines but the phone rep sells the crap out of you! So who's fault is that? And to all the parents upset because you 18 or 19 year old agreed to a service, they Learned the word NO by the time they were 5 the latest so it's their own fault. They should have hung up, never gave their info via telephone, and disregarded the call. All you people trying to make the company look bad however the company never put a gun to your head and made u say yes. You did it on ur own!

For the record, every customer has to say on record how much they are paying, for how long, that they understand that the payments are consectutive and they have to say a clear yes to give us permission to process the order. If ANY of the questions are not clearly stated then the order is killed immediately. Yes, the sales reps might be a little pushy, but isn't a car sales man too? Don't bash a company because u were to stupid to buy the magizines. The first words during the call is "this is a sales call... No purchase necessary... You have been entered into a sweepstakes ... "And it's all true. I even heard a man say, I just ordered for the free gas card and I will cancel. I don't care what they loose out on... So peoples intentions are bad and karma comes back to bite them. All I know isnif you make and agreement, morally you should keep it. The company is legit. Just make sure you know what ur doing b4 u do it.

They do send a watch. Try to see who gives you more free, the magizine service or mcdonalds... Or a lotto ticket? Which do you have a better chance of winning?

Obviously the company is still open for a reason...

National Readers Service Debiting Checking Account

They call all the time! We tell them no more subscriptions, yet they send more and more. Stupid magazines come in the mail that we have no interest i! They keep debiting our checking account with random amounts from $11.00 to over $100.00! Can't stop them. Tried putting a stop payment on the checks, yet they change the name slightly or city, state, and they continue to go thru!

Thanks D for all your suggestions at your blog! Everybody should go there!

I am sooo frustrated with this! They said I had a "coupon" to buy $1000 worth of stuff. I have not been able to do this. Plus was gonna have to pay S&H on all items chosen.

And everytime I try to call the number they've given to my bank, it is disconnected.

I need my $ back ($49.90/ month for magazines that have ABSOLUTELY no interest to me).

They were very convincing on the phone. Yet, they've not stood by the things which they have told me.

This is SUCH A SCAM!

I've had the same problem with NRS. They send me magazines that I have no interest in. I have received calls from them and told them to stop sending the magazines and stop calling. They ignore me and continue to send. I'm trying to call them now and have been on hold 10 minutes. I will be contacting Arizona AG's office Consumer Fraud Division.

National Readers Service - SCAM - Lied about past due account

A couple of years ago I got an unsolicited call from National Readers Service wanting to sell me magazines. The original offer was to pay $1.43 per week for a 5 year subscription to Time Magazine and I'd get 4 other magazines for free. By the end of the conversation, I was told I'd have to pay for the whole subscription up front which amounted to a payment...

National Readers Service Pressure tactics/will not cancel

After finally talking to someone. they tell me I can't cancel. I explained the situation at the time. That I was with My grandchildren at time. Was extremly over stressed. They made it all sound good. Now they won't aloud me to cancel my membership. since when is it you can't cancel something you don't want, or need. After I did the math. It's a ripp-off.. I want out.And they have the nerve to ask for $700.00 and change. To get out of it. DON'T THINK SO...

i can say this to all those that have signed up for this service, willing or unwilling, the quickest way to cancel your account is to threaten with LAWYER, BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, OR ATTORNEY GENERAL. i use to work for one of these companies when i was younger and needed the paycheck, but as soon as i found out what was going on, i got out of these as quick as possible. the only way they will cancel your account on the spot when a representative calls you for a payment is to threaten with a LAWYER, BBB, OR AG. just remember though, being a previous employee myself, they lie to the employees as well, saying they are legit and approved by the BBB, so please remember not to take it out on the reps that are just doing their job.

I got the call for the free watch and pay one get 12 magazines. But I said NO to the last question [that was suppose to be recorded] and hung up...but I still got billed! and it made me over-draft. I am furious and I believe People Search was the Co. that sold my info to Readers Servive OH.

i got the same call last year and within 7 days, they promise to give me a free watch with whatever magazines I never read and there is "no cancel" policy. I ended up to dispute this charge with AMX since there is no contract signed (well, they better could prove it and I will tell the court that I do call and ask for cancellation the very next day but they told me it's already processed and no cancellation)Today I got another phone call and I am stupid enough to give them my new address. Oh well, I am going to dispute it again if they dare to charge my card again.

National Readers Service Scam and cheating

Originally this company seemed like a good idea. I pay a flat fee of $64 a month for one year and I get five magazine subscriptions for five years, or so I thought.

I just received a call from them today asking for my updated cc information so they could debit $40 a month for the next 3 years. Not wanting to be reported to a credit bureau, I reluctantly gave in.

Their shipping even stinks for the last year I've only been getting two of the subscriptions that I payed for. And now the want more money?!?!

Just got a statement for 49.70 for magizines I never recieved, called company to complain and was put on hold for about fifteen m inutes. Was told to hold for supervisor, then told that he would call when he was not busy. I did not order nor did I authorize any subscriptions from this outfit, also advised them I would NOT make any payments to this bill and if I recieved another statement, I would report them as a scammer.

I also recieved a phone call from the national reader's service publishers sweepstakes. i was able to write down alot of information regarding their information. they also gave me the same 800 #, but the caller ID on my phone gave me this number; [protected]. do any of you recongnise it? and did any of you talk to Lisa or Waren. they just called me last week, so nothing has come in the mail or gone through my account. but now i'm not sure what to do.

I also subscribed to this, but had decided to cancel and not do the renewal as well. I actually cancelled within the 60 days allotted to cancel. Then, 7 months after I had cancelled it, they called me and are claiming that I never did. The other problem is that they never seem to send you anything that describes any activity in the mail. So, aside from a note that I wrote to myself about the cancellation, I have nothing to prove it. I now apparently owe them x amount per month for the next 30 mos of subscriptions I do not want, and know I cancelled. They also do that wonderful thing that practically traps you where they front the rest of the money for the renewal essentially binding you to whatever you owe. I'm still in the process of trying to get it sorted out, and yes the customer service number is a joke, no website, and no address. You wait forever trying to talk to someone. I believe their headquarters are somewhere in Kansas, which isn't much help. I'm hoping that people do not get themselves into this mess, because it is a ridiculous nightmare. I would advise anyone who wants a magazine subscription to do it directly through that magazine and not through any company like this. They'd only be asking for trouble.

National Readers Service - Faulty sweepstakes/magazine subscriptions

I get an anonymous phone call from a fairly convincing company that states I've won some sweepstakes called the Dream of Your Lifetime sweepstakes...they call themselves Best Publications Services, which is odd because in the letter that was sent to me it states that they're the NATIONAL READERS SERVICE. These guys are totally a scam and are trying to rip...

National Readers Service Magazine subscription

Over the summer the company "Readers Club of America" called me to sign up for their magazines, it sounded legit, so I did. They billed me once and for the last 4 months I thought I got them off my back. I just got a phone call from these guys who say they're from "National Readers Service" saying they're going to start billing me again. I asked them to cancel but they said I made an obligation to pay them for the next 30 months. I asked to hear the voice recording saying that I agree to pay them for the next 30 months, but they refused to let me hear it. I have no clue what the hell is going on but if anyone knows anything about these people please let me know.

I have been billed for 2 months of $59.80 each time and no magazines and no way to cancel subscriptions . They called me and told me I would get 5 subscription to different magazines and billed my debit card for 2 payments and I am yet to receive the first. Also supposed to get $250 in gift cards haven't seen them either.

They are a rip off company the only way to stop them from taking your money is to cancel your credit card. Then they will begin to harass you on the phone everyday.

I think what I find so frustrating is that this 'company' has so many names, phone numbers and states they operate from! I have learned a valuable lesson from this mess and in the process paid thousands of dollars. On Jan 2nd 2018 $39.90 was charged to my account, THEN on 1/26 my account was charged $59.95 AND AGAIN my account was charged ANOTHER $59.95 on the 29th. I tried calling the contact number listed...'this number is no longer in service' and 'this number has been disconnected'. I suppose I will have to change my cc again and just refuse to pay them!

I have been receiving calls that they will continue my service and deduct $49.90 a month for five magazines which I have not received.
The only magazines I receive is Family Fun and Ebony, the Ebony I always receive 2 months late. When I received the call on 9/18/16 I told
them I do not want to renew but they insisted that I'm obligated to pay the $49.90 a month. The phone number they call from doesn't say
it's a magazine service at all it just says Swedesboro, NJ.

Serveral magazine companies call me, I am receiving too many magazines, I ask them who they were, they talked really fast. I was told because of my payment history, they would lower my monthly payment and remove my name from the renewal list. This company has been taking two payment per month from my account, the lower payment of 29.90 and old payment of 34.90. I quit paying them for a few months. I was told they would report this to the credit bureau.

I've gotten a call from them as well. They made it sound as if the gift cards I had entered in to win that I actually won them but then as I kept listening, I started wondering hey could this be a scam. Luckily the card they tried getting the funds off of didn't have any money on it. And since then we had canceled the card and new are getting a new card. Not looking forward to them calling me about making payments because I won't do it. They are a crap company and will get you roped in with you thinking you won something. When in fact they are just trying to get money out of people. If national readers of north America calls hang up. They are there to scam people.
