I went to the bellefonte branch to cash a small($114.)pay check which was their ck. I cash small checks drawn on their bank often simply using the drive through with my photo ID.Well on 08/10/10 things suddenly got UGLY. I was told by the window clerk that because i didn't have a M&T account i would have to bring 2 forms of ID into the bank to cash my check. I asked to speak to a manager and while i was waiting at the window for the manager with my 8yr old grandson in the truck .THE CITY POLICE WHERE CALLED TO THE BANK. The officer motioned for me to pull ahead, which i did . he then asked me what the problem was and i explained the situation to him . he then ask me to take the check into the bank which i did. I have degenerative disk and joint decease that effects 8 disc. and my ankle, knee and hip joints plus COPD so the journey into the bank wasn't easy for me i even smashed my finger between the doors because i was a nervous wreck . Once inside the snickady acting teller ask for 2 forms of ID which i gave her, then she had to have a finger print. ALL TO CASH THEIR OWN LOUSY $114. dollar check . THE BANK MANAGER TOLD ME IT WAS THEIR POLICY*** BECAUSE I WASN'T A BANK CUSTOMER. Didn't having their ck make me a customer ? I feel the whole episode is DISCRIMINATION .I also see that they have over 80, 000 complaints filed against them .Looks like it is time for a civil or class action lawsuit. I WILL NEVER USE THEIR BANK AND WILL DO NOTHING BUT BADMOUTH THEM PROBABLY FOREVER . F-you M&T BANK YOU SUCK Thanks for reading this, ([protected]@yahoo.com)

Wondering why if I deposit a check using their atm, my transaction date is the current date, but since I made the mistake of depositing inside, the date changes to three days later. It's scanned in the same day with the check being handed to a person, yet the funds that are normally available Saturday, now won't be available until Tuesday.
This bank routinely changes post dates to create overdraft fees. Is there anyway to enforce some sort of regulation preventing obvious fraudulent practices by them?

The same thing happened to me. I work for a an organization that uses them for payroll, so I have to cash my check there since I live paycheck to paycheck and don't have enough money in my own bank account to cash the checks there.
For years they charged me $5.00 every time to cash my check plus the whole 2 forms of ID and fingerprint even though I work right across the street and they know me for years. One time when my license was slightly expired they made me drive home and get my passport even though I had been cashing my paycheck there for years.
But TODAY is when I really hit the roof. I went in there to cash my check and they had raised their check cashing fee FOR THEIR OWN CHECKS to TEN dollars!
Needless to say I did not cash my check so now I have no money until Tuesday when my check clears at my own bank.
I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE M&T. I hope they go out of business.

I had a charge from them for $63.59, " NORTON *ANNUAL RENEWAL877-294-5265." Now get this, I subscribed over a year ago and am almost certain that I opted out of the annual renewal. However my check card with M&T bank was compromised in July of this very year and I had the old card shut down and a new one issues by M&T back. Fast forward to December 28th, and walla a charge from Norton even though I NEVER GAVE THEM MY NEW CHECK CARD NUMBER. I called M&T bank back as to how Norton got my new credit card number after I reported the last one stolen and the bank rep confirmed that the new credit card number is AUTOMATICALLY given out to any companies your likely to have a monthly or annual subscription to. Does this make any sense? You report your card stolen, and the number from the new card is automatically given out to anybody that is currently billing you monthly or yearly charges? Now get this, I canceled the new card after filing this dispute and when I called back to confirm that if Norton would be given the NEW card number they said yes, unless I have a form filled out that opts me out of having my check card number given out. So now I have to wait for the new check card to arrive, then I have to activate it, them I have to opt out, and then I have to cancel the check card again, and then I have to wait again for yet another check card? Does this make any sense? I asked the M&T rep this, and she said that most banks do give out the new card number even after you report your card as being compromised. What?!?

Based on my understanding, you can't cash a check for more than you have in your account. If the check as a wedding gift was more than you had in your account, it's typically their policy to deposit it so that it clears as a valid check before they'll fork over the cash.

Here is one for you. I have an account with M&T bank and so did my father. They would not allow me to cash my father's wedding gift to us which is drawn on the same bank and we have an account there. They said we had to deposit it, they would take the amount out of our available balance until the check cleared my father's account. They would not allow us to cash the check for cash. The money was for my wedding dress. So, I took the check to Key bank and cashed it for a $3.00 fee. What kinda of craziness is that. We both had accounts with them and they wouldn't cash the check. My brother-in-law is an accountant and he said it has something to do with them using the money to make money while the check is waiting to be processed. I still think it is bad business for me not to be able to cash a M&T check at an M&T bank.

My guest is you're not considered a customer because you don't have an account with them. I have an account with M&T and I believe I've seen that policy in numerous branches. While some branches may be lenient with it and not always ask for the ID and fingerprint, by having it as a policy, they reserve the right to enforce it.
