Mid America Bank / Outrageous fees

1 United States Review updated:

I would like to give everyone a heads-up with regards to Mid-America Bank. If it's possible to overdraft your account - they will maximize the opportunity.

I wrote checks for bills. Instead of processing the smaller amounts and then just bouncing the one larger amount (all processed on the same day), Mid America processed the large one first then proceeded to bounce everything else, charging $32.00 for each "transaction". In addition, I was charged $7 per day for my account being overdrawn. The following week when my payroll direct deposit hit, I had $2.00 for my son (4 yrs old) and I to live on, food, gas, daycare, rent, etc. I called the bank to see if some of the fees could be reversed (seeing as how Mid America made over $900 in one and a half weeks just from my account alone) but was informed that they are just following their policy. I informed Mid America that I would not be paying these outrageous fees. Now I cannot open a checking account anywhere as Mid America posted me to the ChexSystem. I also have a collection agency contacting me about payment arrangements for the "balance due".

My son also has an account at Mid America. On a Saturday, I attempted to withdraw some money from his account to take him to a movie. I was told that the transaction couldn't process thru the drive thru window and I had to come in. I was told that HIS account was going to be closed. At no point did any representative tell my why. I assume that it is because mine was closed - however my son's was a Kid Savers account.

I would not recommend Mid America Bank to anyone. Several other people including some of my family members have experienced this same problem with Mid America.

Not only does Mid America charge outrageous fees...they charge fees for everything. I had a premier account which entitled me to FREE online banking/bill pay, so I signed up for it. I admit I'm not on top of checking my statement and balancing my account each month but I do eventually get to it. On one of these occasions I noticed I was being charged a fee every month and had no idea why. So I called the bank and was told it was a fee for my FREE online bill pay...because I had never actually used the service, so was paying a fee each month for not using the FREE service.
