Use caution if you wish to purchase a puppy from a breeder by the name of Michelle Schouten from Versailles MO. I purchased two chihuahua puppies from her in Feb.2009

I spoke to her over the phone about the twp puppies I was interested in purchasing and would like to have both boy's neutered and that they would need to be shipped to my on a airplane since we were over 1900 miles away from her home.

After she received my money for the two puppies, transportaion and for the surgery. she became very distant to me I would email her on trying to get more photos of the two puppies, photos of thier parents and and up date of how the two were doing. I heard nothing back from her.

two days before she was to send the puppies to me she called me to let me know that she would not be sending them out due to one of them suffered an episode of Hypoglycemia after she gave them the worming med. then she started with how she felt that the puppies realy should not be shipped out alone in case something went wrong with one of the puppies while in flight .

I booked a round trip same day flight I emailed her all my flight info. It would be close to 30 days from the time this breeder received full payment of these puppies before I was able to final receive them.

Through out these days I kept in contact with her asking how they were doing could I have some photos sent to me. asking her to make sure that the shot records the vets notes from them getting neutered etc... would be given to me along with the puppies

The day before my flight this breeder called me at home and informed me that she needed for me to email her my flight info. again because she did not know what she did with the info. She also mentioned to me that the puppies had lost a little of their fur (these are long hair chihuahua puppies) and not to worry that her husband had taken the pups to the vet and everything is alright. I reminded her that I had to have all the puppies health records because they were scheduled to see my vet the day after they arive at my home.

She was late arriving at the air port I met her outside I was shocked when I first saw the puppies they smelled bad and they were dirty the one that she said suffered a hypoglycemia attack looked like a baby bird that was just hatched no hair on all his legs and under his chin and his chest there was very little hair on his head. the other pup had lost his hair around his eyes and his chest. the breeder told me that it was from the heat lamp that she had used to keep them warm. and that the vet said that they were all right. She then informed me that she had not remembered to bring the health record info for the puppies I told her to either email me the info or fax me the info and to mail me the hard coppies of the info and that I needed it by the next day because the pups had a vet appt. I told not to worry that it would be taken care of as soon as she got home.

Durring the flight I was cleaning up some poo and I noticed that it had a realy bad smell to it and that there was some blood in the stool.

The day of the vet appt for my puppies (approx 48 hrs later) I had not received any health records info from the breeder . Called her home her husband tells me that she was over 2 hours away from their home delivering a puppy . Her husband finaly was able to fax something to the vets office min. before the appt.

When my vet looked at the pup's she was upset she tells me that both pups should have never been given a certificate of health their molera's were large the hypoglycemia pup's molera was very large and that the pups had giardia (which is why to poo smelled so bad and the blood in the stools.) the vet could not see any indications that the boys were neutered so she called up the breeders vet he could not even remember the boys and asked him how could he allow these two puppies with large molera's to fly to obtain health certificates ... as to their hair...a skin sample was taken and it seamed to be ok. so she feels that it is something that needs to be watched since she has no idear as to why the hair is falling out.

I called the breed and told her about my appt with my vet and how upset my vet was with the condition of these two pup's I told the breeder if she wanted I would have my vet call her about the condition of the pup's the breeder said to me " I do not need another ### chewing". and hung the phone up on me.

I have been communicating only through email with her so I can have records of what is being said between the two of us... she wants me to send the puppies back and she will refund me my money.. I can not send these two back due to the fact that I will not be able to get my vet to allow them to fly with large molera's and a posative giardia which we have already been treated for twice and waiting to see if the second go round with more meds has taken care of the problem..

I was also offered $200 of the $1000.00 that I paid for the pup's and told that their health agreement that she offered would be voided .

I have kept an eye on her web page in the last month she has change it several times. adding wording that will protect her more but needless to say I already have a copy have the wording that was on her web page when I purchased the pup's. and copies of the changes as they appear.

This breeder also sells poodle's yorkshire terriers and now she is selling the mix breed dogs which she is calling designer dogs..

when I first went to her web page she stated that she was getting out of the bussiness due to health problems . now that statement had been removed. I told her that the Hypoglycemia dog would always be a specialty dog since his large molera . she advertised a special needs dog.

She said she has been a breeder for over 15 yrs. I asked her how could she have not sent me the dogs health records and how could she not let me know about the the pups hair and how could she ship these pups know ing that the two pup's had large molera's... reply from breeder " not every one is perfect" and yes I have this in writing!

I am still waiting to hear back from the breeder. I asked for $500.00 to be refunded back to me since she sold me sick dogs and failed to disclose about the condition of the two puppies health.

I will file a law suite in small claims court if this breeder wishes to continue to give me a hard time.

two days before my flight Michelle call's me at home and tells me that the puppies are doing fine

You must be either family or a friend of Michelle's. I do not know her personaly but the way I've been treated by her through out this whole ordeal does not ring in a quality dog breeder . I am well a ware of an open molera in the dogs and I know that it does not cause hypoglycemia I was refuring to which dog was which since there are two of them .I am very upset with her due to the fact medical and phyisical aspect of these two pups were not disclosed to me... I was not told that the pups had large open molera's and I was not told until a few nights night before I was to fly out to MO to pick up the pups that their fur was falling off there little bodies and as for my vet they are realy good.. the stool samples that were collected had been sent out to a lab to check for those lovely parasites that puppies from breeders seam to bring with them to there new homes . These pups came to me with the giardia . She should be checking all her animals in her kennel to make sure its not passed on to her other pup's as well as her family. I met michelle and her mom at the airport in MO to picked up the pups and with in the few mins after the pups being in my care one could tell that something was wrong once you saw what the stools looked like. so do not go on thinking that these two pups became ill while in my care... I have two other chi's and they cost me even more than these two pups but with them they arrived in great health from their breeder .. The breeder also made sure that all their paper work ie.. shot records vet visits and their AKC paper work was shipped with the pups so when they went to their vet appt. all the information was present not having to be faxed to the vet... I still have not received the health info from the vet when these two pups were neutered. My vet called her vet up and chewed him out for letting the pups fly with large molera's and he himself did not speek highly of Michelle ... SO NO THANKS FOR YOU ADVISE FOR ME TO FIND ANOTHER VET I WILL KEEP THE ONE THAT I HAVE SINCE THEY SEAM TO KNOW A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN YOU ... and as for feeling privileged in owning a sick pup's and spending all kinds of money to make sure they get the best care I thank you Michelle. and friend.. ps.. friend there is no such thing as a teacup or micro chi...

I bought a Yorkie from Michelle three years ago. And he was underweight so my vet said at least for a 3 month puppie...well the dog was not in a perfect condition he also had giardia which it got treated right away when he arrived. The health certificate was signed by Michelle's vet! I am glad my pup was able to make it..but certainly he went through a lot in Missouri..sorry to say Michelle puppy heaven but you could do a lot better...that's a fact!

We also purchased 2 chihuahua puppies from Michelle -- May of 2010. Both puppies had coccidia and had to be on medicine for 4-5 weeks. When we told her about this, she said that it was caused by the puppies being nervous in a new home. That is NOT what causes coccidia --- it is transmitted by feces...all the puppies have to do is step in it, clean their paw and they can contract this. We have 2 older dogs and had to keep them separate to insure our older dogs did not get this.
She also gave us a list of what was already done for the dogs...vaccines, etc. The first on the list was "dew claws removed"...both of our puppies still have their dew claws! We decided not to trust that all of the supposed vaccines had been given to our puppies and the vet agreed. They did get more puppy shots and after about 6 more weeks, the puppies were neutered. We had to give them extra time to build up their immune system before surgery was done. We are now dealing with 2 puppies that have 2 rows of teeth...puppy teeth have not came out. It isn't bothering them too much, but we probably will have more expense dealing with the dental issues. They both have 8 canine teeth...4 upper ones and 4 lower ones.
I think Michelle really loves what she is doing...I think she is just overwhelmed with her business. She told us when we bought the puppies in May that she was wanting to get out of the business. We love our babies...they are now healthy and we wouldn't give them up for anything...just be ready to deal with multiple issues if you buy any dogs from her.

OK, I just read the whole article. It did not show up when I first opened this complaint. Open font does not cause hypoglycemia. All typie Chihuahuas have open fonts as puppies. If Michelle sold them for 500 each they most likely were tiny teacups, her specialty. Dogs similar to what Michelle produces sell for as high as $10, 000.00 in the larger cities. All of her dogs are either champions, champion sired or champion grandsired. She has carefully chosen her breeding stock and is an asset to the breed. Teacup and toy puppies are not regular puppies and rushing a seller to receive a puppy is stressful to both breeder and puppy. Reading what you put Michelle through it is a wonder she still has any sanity left. Buying a puppy does not make you privy to ruin a breeders life due to your inexperience of understanding facts. As for Giardia. This condition is extremely difficult to discover from a simple fecal. Many times it is only guestimated it is Girardia. Most likely the puppies have stressed with an gut bacteria over growth that your vet is not treating properly. If a skin scrapping showed nothing then obviously Michelle is telling you the truth. Raising tiny teacup and toy puppies is a very, very difficult job. The public assumes that they can just be manufactured, and that breeders can defy the laws of nature, and produce perfect puppies that can adapt to every situation and environment . Including neglect and abuse. I too breed. I am not as nice as Michelle. I would have sent your money back the first time you complained you were not receiving your puppies in a timely manner. I also would not have wasted my time on you for 500 dollars a Puppy. The time and money it takes to raise these precious babies is not covered by a measly 500 dollars. I have witnessed how Michelle cares for her dogs. She is a top notch care giver also. She spares no expense. You should feel privileged in owning such fine puppies., And I strongly advise you to find another vet.

I am shocked to see anything negative written about Michelle. I know her. I have purchased top quality Chihuahua puppies from her. I have been in her kennel. She is a top notch breeder with top quality puppies. Who ever wrote this comment must either be a child or a substance abuser. The spelling is atrocious, and they are slandering a great breeder. It is a shame that it is so easy to mar someone’s reputation at whim on the internet.
