I was applying for a position on the internet which turned out to be a career counceling and placement sie not an actual job. I made an appointment at the Middletown/Red Bank office and met with a VP who promised me they could easily place me with my experience and education in a high six figure position. He assured me they had inside information on jobs and their counselors were all from managing large corporate HR departments and had kept their contacts. I was told I would get career counseling, interview training, and advance job placement. I have been with them for over a year not one valid interview. The counselors make appointments and don't show up. They give you instruction on how to look for a job yourself and when you question them on it they say their positions will come later but they never come. When you complain they stop answering your calls. I've paid $5550 for suggestions on how to change my resume. Both of my counselors said my resume needed updating the only problem is the second one was telling me that about the first one who had just had me change my resume so it should have been up to date.
I feel they have prayed on my need to find a new job to bilk me of $5550.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
MGA is a "career marketing service", not a placement service. The major difference is that reputable recruiters are paid their fee by the hiring organization, not by the candidate, and that should be a warning signal for any firm that goes out of its way to contact a candidate and market relentlessly to them.
What you will get is -- at best -- counseling. That will likely include a resume written into a templated format, perhaps some pre-printed guides, and if you're really lucky, your resume sent unsolicited to organizations who aren't keen on getting unsolicited resumes. The bottom-line is that any money that you pay to such a firm is the same as taking $100 bills and using them as charcoal to broil steaks.
Yes, I've been called by MGA. Yes, their approach was 'pushy' and immediately pressing for a face-to-face interview so they can pitch a contract. Yes, I asked who paid their fee and they admitted the candidate does this. That's all one needs to know. Google search the organization and you'll immediately see those who've been taken by the false claims and promises. Instead, invest that money into networking events, focused career searches, LinkedIn, and other avenues where you're more likely to gain insight to the unadvertised market that these firms will try to sell you without demonstrating measurable, tangible, or guaranteed results.
I got a voice message from a Rose Marie Norton, who works in the Fort Washington, PA MGA office. I called her back and she said she got my resume off of monster.com. She asked if I'd be available tomorrow, to which I replied yes. Rose Marie said she had something in Fort Washington for me. I asked her what kind of job, to which she said that would be discussed in person tomorrow.
She thenpromptly sent me an email and asked to confirm the meeting ("not an interview") with a Bob Perry. On the phone, she made it sound like she was setting up a meeting for me with a managing director from a company that was hiring in Fort Washington, PA - not MGA. But it became apparent that the Bob Perry character is a MGA employee.
I've never heard of MGA, and the whole thing sounded strange so I started investigating. There are numerous complaints on how MGA seemingly doesn't have any jobs to offer, but charges large sums of money for their "advice".
Consequently, I canceled my meeting appointment. I can't say I agree with complaint because I never went through with it. But my gut says it's not what MGA tries to make it out to be.
