Our verdict: With Square's very poor resolution rate, careful consideration is needed. Research their service comprehensively, and read up on how they handle customer disputes. Square Bad company

I used yo use square but with their poor customer service and the fact that they want to hold your money for lengthy periods, I can not afford to use them. We are a small business that is doing everything we can do to survive this economy and dealing with square is killing us. We have elected to use Pay Anywhere. People make sure you check this company out before you sign up with them or you will be sorry and if anyone finds a customer service number please forward it to me,

Square They will not release my merchant money

First data is the merchant services company that services my business account for wells fargo bank. I received a levy from the board of equalization and subsequently had the levy released on 8/14/2012. The board of equalization faxed me the same document that they faxed to first data. I attempted to contact first data regarding the funds they are holding and got the run around, I contacted wells Fargo and they were not able to get anyone to advise them if they received the release or when they will release my money. It is ridiculous that there isn't a person that you can speak to nor does anyone call back. My business will close if they don't release the funds they are holding.

Why would they be holding your funds? The reason they do this is always because of suspected fraud. Either on your part or a customers payment. I have a lot of merchants and I have only seen one hold and that was due to a stolen card used from Africa to make a large purchase.

Square Fraud

I own a small business doing website design, SEO, advertising and web hosting. I also run an online training course for consumers and provide consulting services. I signed up for the Square card reader for the iphone in January. Everything seemed to go fine for several months--whenever I took a card payment the money was usually in my bank the next day.

Everything was fine until one of my customers made a payment of $1800 shortly after a previous customer had paid $1700 within a seven day period.

Well, Square sent me an email saying they were holding everything over the first $1000 for 30 days. There was no indication they would do this when I signed up for the service. Then they suspended my account because they said they needed further information--tax forms, invoices, website info, and much more. I submitted everything they asked for. This resulted in Square canceling my account and telling me they were going to keep everything they owed me for 180 days because my account was "high risk." I have also used paypal for over 2 years without a single problem. Not one.

My advice for small business that want to grow--don't sign on with these bandits. They will rip you off if you take a payment they think is too big. Their customer service is nonexistent. You can't reach them by phone--ever. They have pat answers for all their complaints and you'll never talk to a real human being because YOU are not a valued customer--you're just someone putting nickels in their pocket. Try Merchant Warehouse--they'll bend over backwards to get your business with a personal phone call.

But be warned small business person--don't use Square--it's a rip-off and a problem waiting to happen.

Square Theft

Square is holding over 35 thousand dollars on our Company account, they say for 90 days. Who knows if we will EVER get it.

There have been 70 complaints file with the San Francisco BBB alone in the past 12 months.

YES, use this company if you can AFFORD to HAVE YOUR FUNDS HELD INDEFINITELY AT THEIR WHIM.

They just assume this is O.K. No problem, we don’t need the 35k that we worked so hard for to pay our bills. PLEASE! I have heard from MANY customers who have experienced the same thing.

If you are reading this, chances are you too have had a problem. Report them to the Following: States Attorney General in California AND your own State (do both), and the BBB.

They need to be STOPPED!

Square Secret Cancellation Clause

Never, Never would I use Clear Choice Merchant Services again. Poor service, secret cancellation clause in contract, unreasonable decision makers. Clear Choice Merchant Services sent me a contract 2 years ago which I signed. When I tried to cancel this year, 2012, they told me that there was a 3 year cancellation clause which I had never seen or heard of! They presented 3 pages of small print that I did not sign and demanded payment. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau with the facts. They in turn took over $400 out of my bank account without my permission. Clear Choice Merchant Services ripped me off and because their fees are automatically deducted, I will have to pursue getting my funds back without my banks help. Their are so many other choices which are easier, cheaper and have, no contracts, like PayPal. I will be using them from now on. I will never, never use Clear Choice Merchant Services again. Clearly they will not be my choice.

First off, not all providers put you in a contract, with a cancelation fee. Ask to see where it is on the contract, BEFORE you sign it. Secondly, you might want to check out paypalsucks.com, before over paying for accepting cards, and then losing your money to a company that will keep it on a whim. Research providers, before signing. Google, Bing, Yahoo, you'll find comments, and reviews from businesses on all providers.

Wow, I agree with the first commentor. You sound like someone who didn't read your contract or do any research on Credit Card Processing Companies. I did before I signed up with ClearCloice. All processors have some sort of contract term and early cancellation fee, unless you get them to put it on your contract that you do not. It is listed in the booklet of terms, you should have read those. Most likely you signed that you read them somewhere on the application. Shame on you for not reading what you signed. I have been with ClearChoice for many years and I do not have 1 complaint. When I have to call them, I get a person in the US on the phone right away. They are always nice and have always helped me if I have a batch problem. From Customer Service to Tech support the team at ClearChoice is top notch. I have a feeling this will not be the only problem you business encounters if you do not pay attention to the contracts you sign or agreements you make. If you are looking for processing, call ClearChoice they are honest and easy to work with. I recommend them to my friends.

You sound like someone who did not read your contract and now have "buyers remorse" if you broke your contract for a cell phone you would have to pay an early term fee with them as well. I would bet there is more to this story then you are saying here. I have been with Clear Choice since 2007 and never had an issue, they have always helped me when I needed it, like when my terminal died because someone spilled a drink on it, they sold me a new one for about the same price i would have gotten it off ebay for and it was completely programed when it arrived, i just pluged it in and i have been good since then.

Square Poor customer service/scam

My Ex and I were needing a quick and painless way to settle up on a vehicle that we had purchased. After reading about the Squareup.com product we thought that It would be worth checking out because we needed to use a credit card to make the transaction between us.

I initially emailed the people at squareup.com to explain the situation to them, in detail, as I was aware that there is a hold on payouts over $1, 000. My inquiry was responded to quickly and enthusiastically to increase my payout as long as I swiped the card with my Square reader.

Two days later I received an email from the Square risk department asking for details of the transaction since I was a first time user. I appreciated that they were doing their due diligence to protect the company and other users, so I explained the situation again and referred back to my previous inquiry which resulted in my payout status being accelerated. Our full cooperation was offered along with my personal number for contact if needed.

Twenty-four hours later I had heard nothing back. I sent another email to the Square help address, again speaking of the situation and asking of an update.

Another 24 hours later (Now four days after the original transaction) I had not received a reply, Another email was sent again asking for some status update.

It has now been 5 days since the original transaction, 4 days since Square's inquiry, and I have sent six (6) messages to them and have yet to receive a single reply.

They offer No other means of reconciliation on their website. At this point I think I will have to engage the credit card company to stop the transaction and do any reporting against Squareup that is needed.

Square is going to continue to do what they do for a long as people allow them to get away with things. You need to (1) contact your state's attorney generals office (2) contact the Federal Trade Commission and (3) get a lawyer involved. Contacting your state and hounding them left and right is the only way your going to get action taken against Square. You cannot let Square screw you over and then just become a victim and then walk away from it. They are doing it to a lot of people because they know people aren't taking action against them. So Square will do it over and over again until merchants and customers start taking action and doing exactly what we say. PayPal was the same way, after being sued every 3 months, they settled every single time, and then jumped up and down saying we didnt do nothing wrong. You need to contact both state and government authorities, file a class action law suit against square AND DONT SETTLE. If they settle, they will just continue to do what they were doing in the first place. Only when they get convicted is when they are faced with changing their business practices or shutting down operations. Don't settle for the quick dollar, and allowing your attorney or legal firm make a quick buck and move on, you have to get a conviction.

Anyone wishing to get involved with class action against SQUARE please E-mail me at Aceon77@aol.com. I will give you MY personal contact information and we can get the ball rolling on this. Already have several people. NEVER mind what it says in "their" user agreement. They currently hold $6, 000 of MY $. THEY ARE RUINING SMALL BUSINESSES and I seems that complaints are NOT being addressed by government agencies or State attorney generals. I guess WE have to help ourselves. EVEN IF IT TAKES YEARS! It's crazy to hear all the chaos that Square has created with these merchants! I must say, it's definitely not the first time I have heard this. For those of you who still need a mobile payment processing app, I have a much better solution for you... PhoneSwipe! It's seriously 100 times better than Square. Square has a beautiful app, but that's pretty much it. There is an awesome blog article on the www.moblized.com website regarding Square vs. PhoneSwipe. You might want to check it out =) http://www.moblized.com/blogs/blog/phoneswipe-compare-square

In a nutshell, PhoneSwipe has a more durable card reader, a great app, 24/7 LIVE customer service, the rates are comparable, the sales agents at Moblized are honest and friendly, and your funds won't be held like they were with Squares. In my opinion, it's worth it to do some research and see if it's a better option for you.

I agree with all the complain that Square gets.
They hold our money for over 30 days, I could not find a way to email them every time I tried I always got the same response. Mail not process yet, we had to borrow money to pay our suppliers and our employees due to Square holding our money for 30 day. What a horrible company the Feds should get involve with a company like this and put them out of business. They are scumming people with their money.
Be aware of them, I would not recommend anyone to do business with them.

This company is unbelievable. They promise to process deposits within 36 hours. So, I verified my account as requested. I processed two deposits equaling a little over $600. I waited 24 hours, 36 hours even 48 hours for the funds. Nothing. So I emailed their customer service. After two additional days, the company responded that I needed to send in an invoice and tracking numbers. I did so, but I was upset as this is WAY past the 36 hours they promised. It has now been TWO weeks since I have received a reply and the funds have yet to be deposited. This company is unbelievable AND since the transactions were considered processed on their end, there is no way to refund my customers until they decide to release the funds. I would warn against using them in the future.

Square No customer support or user manual

I signed up for Square Up a week ago and just starting using. there are so many bugs in the application. I have sent 14 emails today alone to support and NOT one has been answered. how does this company ever expect to stay in business without any customer support. I will be looking to their competitors fir a more reliable way to accept credit cards. very frustrating for a small business owner (and this service was recommended to us). Great idea that's POORLY executed!

Similar complaint--I signed up for SQUARE in August 2012, upon advice/recommendation from other independent contractors. I cannot get in touch with anyone at customer service; their phone # is a dead end that just hangs up on you (after it sends you back to their website). No 'online chat'; their auto response email indicates they are committed to responding to you as quickly as possible. I am trying to run a business and need to know that the company I am going to do business with will be able to respond in a professional manner to my question. I have a link on my website to PayPal and never had any problems; I am considering using Intuit or another credit card service. I have warned them I am looking at other companies in which to do business. So far, it hasn't phased them because they still are not responding to my emails. What type of company doesn't have 24/7 customer service? Are they investing all their revenue into advertising and marketing?

I signed up to squareup about 3wks ago, and i must say after 30yrs in small business "IT IS THE WORST" credit card service ever! HANDS DOWN! I have returned all funds reversed to my customer because they are selective as to when they want to release funds, but mean while THEY have the funds so they may collect interest. I have decided to make it my mission to let all small business' know not to even consider this squareup because if you need answers from them, they will not respond any emails (again, selectively). No phone numbers, no address, no nothing. You have been warned, a true nightmare with this company. Use, intuit, roampay or somebody else where you can get a LIVE person on the line who can actually assist you when need be. As far as i am concerned this Square place could be some pre-teen in some living room in Dubai who does not give a hoot about customers. I will be starting a squareup campaign on the internet to let all people know about this terrible service, so please do your homework and don't let this happen to you.

After applying twice and a few emails, I have yet to receive a reader, despite their emails saying that the reader has been sent, and yes, there is ABSOLUTELY NO LIVE SUPPORT!

Square Long hold on my money and no customer support

Started using squareup.com to accept credit card payments from my customers in January, 2011. Used it four times without incident. Took a $1200 payment in March, 2011 and only received a partial payment to my bank account. After submitting a request through their email and not hearing back for over a week, I figured out, via their FAQ, s, they still consider me a "new" customer and they hold amounts over $1, 000 per month for 30 days. No contact from them yet so I've decided to switch to Intuit's GoPayment service and close the Squareup account as soon as I get the rest of my money. I certainly will not and do not recommend this company as their customer service is non- existent and they appear to want to make money on your money while they hold it.

They keep holding my transactions, now Square has over $7000.00 of my money! They are NOT honoring their guidelines that states WHEN my money will be deposited in my account. I think they are PLAYING with my money! I feel that this company IS NOT secure. It's been over a week now. If I don't hear from someone by tomorrow, I am contacting the attorney general. I too have had a pleasurable experience with Square Up. Like the comment before mine, check the FAQ's before you complain! When I first signed up with them, I emailed them because I knew I would go over the $1, 000 a week threshold. They responded with a link to fill out a form. I filled it out and got an increase to $3, 000 a week. The threshold is only for manually pined cards, not everything. There is more liability on them processing cards that are not present. I told them 90% of my business is over the phone and email with my clients since I do web development and they were more than happy to increase for me. I have since canned my other merchant (Paynet Systems) because they lied to me several times and actually talked bad about a company they never processed through. I think it is just bad practice to ever talk bad about another company. Square's customer service number is above and works, but seems like their response on email is getting much faster. Posts a month ago were saying a couple to a few days, but I received response by the very next day.

Hope this helps in any ones decisions

Some people just can't seem to read the website before complaining. Before I sign up for ANYTHING I read all the FAQ's, help forums, etc to make sure I know what I am getting into. Have been using Square for a couple months now and love it. Use both swiped and manual CC's and it works great. When I first started, I wasn't sure if I would go over the $1, 000 limit in one week for new customers but business was booming and my first week was to collect over $2, 000 in payments. I just sent them an email asking for an increase, they sent an email back with a link where you fill out some information and they got back to me a few days later saying they increased my weekly amount to $5, 000. During the few days (it was during a holiday weekend so I didn't expect an immediate response) that I was waiting for a response, I figured out that I could create a secondary account under a second checking account I had so I could still collect payments and it wouldn't get tied up in the $1, 000 limit. Worked great, now use the second account as a back up. They respond fairly quickly via Twitter @sqsupport All the fees and limit information is listed on their website - READ IT!

Square Theft/no customer service

I read a few blogs about a merchant service(squareup.com)on an excusve website. I decided to use the service and accepted over eight hundred dollars in payments through them. The problem is they will not send the funds due to my designated business account and I have now idea how to collect my money from them. They continue not to answer my numerous complaints and requests for assistance. They claim to answer every request personally which is deceptive. On my first complaint, they personally sent me a list of measures for a certain proceedure which was fruitless and had nothing to do with my complaint. If it was not for You Tube, I would have still been stuck on the application complaint.

I'm following up on the comment to see if you've since received your money. I'm evaluting mobile CC processing options and squareup was one of them that kept coming up.

What was the problem with the bank account that they would not send your money? Was your account verified?
And did they finally send you your money?

Thanks in advance for the follow up!

Square theft/no contact

Squareup is witholding over eight hundred dollars worth of credit card transactions belonging to me. The refuse to provide me customer support or address complaints. They claim to provide personal dedicated support to each customer complaint which is not true. Trying to get my funds from Squareup has been a complete nightmare.

I call the [protected] phone number at 7:18am central time on Friday Sept. 09, 2011 and there is no answer just keeps ringing and ringing...most businesses at least have a recording with contact information or at least contact times information...I have an account with them but not even gotten card reader in mail yet...so I have not used this service...but all of this raises red flags for me...what I am worried about now is even if I choose not to use them they have my bank info and could probably rob me since the deposited a small amount for account verification and then took it back out...that they took it out and that they can dock your account for disputes means they have that kind of access to just rob you blind or even a little here a little there to everyone and they make tons of money.

Square MIS INFORMATION

THIS IS MORE FOR INFORMATION RATHER THAN A COMPLAINT
THE ONLY TIME THAT YOU GET SCREWED -RIPPED OFF- CHEATED, ETC.. IS IF YOU DON'T DO YOUR DUE DILGENT AND ASK QUESTIONS GET ANSWERS IN WRITING.
I HAVE BEEN SALES REP FOR OVER 15 YEARS..NONE OF MY MERCHANTS EVER HAD ISSUES LIKE THE ONES I READ HEAR...
MOST MERCHANTS ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING FOR NOTHING...WHEN SOME ONE OFFERS THEM THAT THEY GRAB AT IT
REMEBR IF ITS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE..THAN IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO PRICE A MERCHANT .. UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE SALES REPS WHO CHEAT PEOPLE..BUT THAT IS IN EVERY BUSINESS...READ YOUR APPLICATION...READ YOUR APPLICATION... ANYTHING THAT THE REP PROMISES SHOULD BE HAND WRITING IF IT NOT ON THE APPLICATION AND THEN INITIAL BY THEM AND YOU! CALL THE COMPANY AND VERIFY THAT EVERYTHING YOU WERE PROMISE IS IN FACT DOABLE!
THERE ARE MANY KINDS OF FEES.. CHARGEBACK FEES, PCI FEES, MONTHLY MINIMUM, EARLY TERMINATION,

NEVER, NEVER NEVER LEASE A TERMINAL...TERMINALS SHOULD COST NO MORE THAN $250 TO $350 UNLESS YOU NEED A SPECIALZED TERMINAL( WIRELESS, IP)

AS FAR AS RATES GO - DEMAND INTERCHANGE PRICING- FIND A SALES REP THAT KNOW ABOUT IT... ITS HOW THE CHAIN STORES ARE PRICES..IT MAY SEEM A LITTLE CONFUSING UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND HOW IT WORKS...IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF MONEY...

Square DEPOSITS INTO ACCOUNTS

I have doing business with Merchant Services since May of 2006. It never seems to fail that everytime I have a large deposit to be deposited into my business account, it doesn't happen. But when they want there money for FEES that are outrageous they don't have any problems in that department. I have sent endless hours and time trying to either track my monies or for them to find it.
I finally had enough of their bull-### customer service crap, that I finally went with another company that I'm so happy with.
My advice to someone who is just opening a business DON'T USE THIS COMPANY. YOU WILL HAVE MORE HEADACHES AND PAYING FEES THAT YOU PROBABLY CAN'T AFFORD!
DISSATIFIED CUSTOMER FOR SURE!

As the days go by, people are living in a more convenient and secured. You can also save time and effort. Wherever you are even in your home or in your office you can buy whatever you want to buy through online credit card and I must say that every small businesses should have a merchant because credit card holders are even growing.

Square None

I have had nothing but the best experience from this company. I believe anyone complaining on this board is either a disgruntled ex employee, or even worse, a competitor that cannot handle their low rates and amazing customer service. I have been with them for years, and their lifetime warranty on equipment, and lowest rates guaranteed have always been honored. their sales reps are always available to assist, and their attention to detail surpasses any other company out there. I truly believe that a company with an A- with the BBB would not have this rating should these clearly unfounded complaints were the case. to Sandy, Mike and Sushi, why not disclose who you are if these complaints are true? why hide behind an alias? I understand that as a competitor, it must be frustrating to not have the ability to compete with their rates and exceptional service, but do you not think people will realize on their own this is all you are doing?

The call me 2 or 3 times a day wasting my time ans have ignored my request to remove me from the call list, worse yet it sounds like the same woman from India calling me every time.

This company is by far the worst rip off card processing company I have ever encountered in my 30 years of dealing with card processors, Not only are there prices way more than other services offer. They also keep charging fees that they don't ever tell you about and when you ask them about it they tell you nothing or hang up or tell you you are wrong. There are many good companies out there that does the same thing they do for far less money and much much better customer service. Be Very careful and choose any other company than this or you too will have many problems with them, the same as all others that are complaining about this company all over the net.

Square Fraud and scam

This company will tell you anything you want to hear. They will rip you off so they can make money. Rich Meeker and Joe Parisi are the worst. I did business with them and they are such good liars. They tell you are getting a wholesale rate but you are just paying for the lease. You can buy a new machine for $300-$400 INSTEAD OF PAYING FOR A 4 YEAR LEASE! Please do not do business with this company. Their employees are very deceiving. It's not even worth calling in to the number they give you. They will not answer or you might get directed to Jim Grant who knows nothing about the business. This is to help everyone out there, DO NOT DO ANY BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY! THEY LIE BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE!

I have actually met with Joe Parisi and Jim Grant after doing business with them and they were very helpful. They set me up and informed me that the lease was 100% tax deductible, it paid for itself practically. I have no complaints and it was a pleasure doing business with Merchant Services.

Square Scam/Dupe

Be aware that when you get set up with this company and provide accounts for them, they'll retain the accounts and not pay you the residuals as they promise for all kinds of reasons. Also they have no benefits if they tell you they do. The amount they pay you up front is what you get which equals gas and lunch money lol!. Their scam? They get you to create several accounts and lock the merchants in and its their until you get frustrated and leave them. Then you'll suddenly realised you've made a huge loss as supposed to gain. READ YOUR CONTRACT! ASK QUESTIONS AND THINK ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO WORK- DON'T GET CARRIED AWAY!

Square not with wells fargo but useing their logo

beware! I recently started a biz and opened a checking acount with wells fargo bank. My banker told me to expect a call from their merchant services soon in order to set up for excepting credit cards in my biz. So in a few days I recieved a call from someone caiming to be with leaders merchant services. I asked" are you with Wells Fargo?" they said yes. So I did all the paper work assuming that I was doing biz with my bank-Wells Fargo. I never thought twice about the fact that they may be someone other than who they implied. All of their documents that they have you sign have the name Wells fargo on the letter heads and use the name through out leader's merchant services contracts. So I signed up. I got pulled aside at my bank a week later - My banked said that because I did not sign up with wells fargo she would have to change my biz bank program to one that was a monthly fee. I told her that there must of been a mistake with wells because all the docs I signed had wells fargo name all over it. So after she looked into it she called and told me that what they are doing is illegal and that wells fargo is not leaders merchant services- But I had to deal with it on my end. So now I say beware it is easier than you think to get frauded. Leaders merchant services is not part of Wells Fargo- and they will tell you that they are just to get your account fusterated and betrayed- [protected]@hotmail.com

ALL PROCESSOR HAVE TO USE A SPONSER BANK... THAT WHAT IT SAYS ON THE APPLICATIONS...THE TRUTH IS THAT MOST BANKS DON'T DO PROCESSING AND IT IS DONE BY A PROCESSOR...MOST OF THE TIME THE BANKS CAN BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAT WORKING WITH A PROCESSOR... THE BANK MIGHT HAVE SAVED YOU THE BANK FEE AND MADE A COMMISION FROM THE PROCESSING WHICH WOULD HAVE COST YOU MORE.

Leaders is a LIE! They really are a SCAM
Terrible terrible company. I am finally getting out of my 2 year contract. I shouldve gotten out sooner. They charged me unexplainable fee's too.
With all those fee's it probably wouldve been better to leave the first year.
Service is unbelievably terrible.
Never go with them EVER! They steal your money away. Worst people to work with.
All very non-educated. All they know are about the additional fees they keep popping out at you for NO REASON!
STAY AWAY FROM THEM!
I will do everything I can in my power to have no-one, NO ONE go with them!
