Very poor 🤒
We don't know much about how Mayo Clinic handles customer complaints outside ComplaintsBoard, but what we see here, on our website, is quite disappointing. We think there might be reasons for the company's actions (like not knowing about the complaints), and we would be happy to see them among customer-focused businesses that easily solve customer problems. But until that happens, we ask reviewers to be cautious when dealing with Mayo Clinic and using their services, and to carefully read the experiences of other customers on ComplaintsBoard, because who is warned is armed, you know! 💪

Mayo Clinic various trauma mostly surgical disfigurement

I had surgery last week Jan 7th 2019 at your Jacksonville campus and was left with gaping holes on exterior thigh. This was meant to correct an excessively tight binding by a Mayo nurse, Pamela, after a lipo procedure back in March 2018 but she once again lacks commitment and failed me. I ask you for immediate attention in this matter by the right people at Mayo to commit and correct these traumatic issues so I can move forward and heal in peace. Let's get this done.
Sincerely,
Connie Wheeler

Mayo Clinic express care

I took my daughter in for a strep test at 9am was told results would be ready by 4:30 pm as if they are positive she needs to start medication it is now 6:pm and no results. Now the pharmacy is closed. We can not call anyone at express care because apparently they have no phones there. There is no one to help us because they all tell us we need to contact were the tests were taken. I am very agrivated and disappointed. How is it not possible to contact were you were seen and no one can help? Now I have sleepless night ahead of me plus I will have to take a third day off of work if she needs meds because your people can't do their job. My daughter's throught is swollen if she ends up in the er because of this you will charge me for that too. I should have gone to olmstead at least I'd have an answer or be able to talk to a person.

Mayo Clinic physician unprofessional

My brother who suffers from a severe heart valve condition was schedule to have his Ross procedure done on October 25, 2018 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. This past week, he gets a called that his surgeon left Mayo Clinic for whatever reasons and now my brother has no surgeon to get him the surgery that he needs. I'm not sure of the surgeon's last name, but I know that he specializes in heart surgeries, and that he was probably the only one that could do the Ross procedure and he is of Middle Eastern descent. Hearing and seeing the sadness and disappointment, frustration, and his worries truly breaks my heart. How could a doctor just leave his patients hanging like that? I know my brother is not his only patient but I cannot imagine the same feelings all of his patients who have trusted this doctor with their lives on the line, just leave. That is extremely unprofessional on his part and my whole family are devastated. We have no idea what to do now, we have no idea where else to go and who else can do the Ross procedure on him. We are in desperate need to seek help and to help us find another surgeon comfortable with this type of procedure.

I am beyond enraged with the surgeon. Also, part of it is also Mayo Clinic fault. Mayo clinic needs to find the appropriate doctor for each patient and we feel that you guys are not helping in that aspect at all. You are leaving us to figure this out on our own. My brother is Mayo Clinic's patient and you guys are responsible to find him another surgeon who can perform his surgery. That is every hospital responsibility, and every hospital needs to make sure their patients are taken care of in case situations like this happened. I am beyond disappointed with the Mayo Clinic. Mayo clinic supposed to be the best of the best in the nation but it is definitely lacking and not stepping up to resolve this.

Not surprised. Mayo Egotistical Doctors run rampant especially in Rochester, MN. This culture has been creeping more negatively for over a decade. Drs. Will and Charlie are worn out they rolled over so many times in their graves.

Mayo Clinic registration/insurance

My husband and I waited 3 weeks for our appointment at Mayo with a Surgeon.
We drove a hour and 1/2. We went to the registration counter and the 3rd lady we talked to informed us we were out of Network. We would have to pay 20, 000-30, 000 to do a lobectomy. We were in shock since we had pre-registered and were told we were in Network. We saw Dr. THOMAS and proceeded to find out what was going with insurance. The lady at registration gave us no information or concern on how to resolve .
We cancelled Surgery at Mayo for October 24th. Then they called and said we were in Network and they put us back on surgery schedule.
A week later once again a problem, we need pre certification from Mayo to get insurance to cover my husband..So needless to say a cancer diagnosis and a coming up surgery isn't stressful enough, but Mayo failed from the first moment we walked in the door.
I hope this helps other patients understand that they are not going to help you find out what you need to do.
Pray that we get this precertifacation.
I would not recommend this hospital to anyone because of all the complications just trying to understand what we need to get this surgery.
They are not customer friendly or helpful.

Mayo Clinic department of neurology

I have had headaches my entire life. As a result I moved here to get help with them. In 2015 I had to have emergency surgery due to brain aneurysms that were about to rupture. I have preventative medicine as well as boric and nerve blocks all to no avail. Today I had an appointment in Neurology due to another MRI/MRA done and being at the emergency room. My vision has gotten worse and I've had memory loss. My radiology results indicated they found more aneurysms that are 5mm and 8mm. At my appointment the doctor was very rushy and didn't want to answer my questions he got a personal phone call on the phone in the room where we were. After getting off the phone he orders another MRA and refuses to help with managing my pain or addressing my deepest concerns. So I had to stop at the checkout desk where there were 3 receptionists. I stood there 15 minutes in front of them and no of them helped me. Finally an employee from the back was on her way out and asked if she could help me set up my MRA. As she was on the phone setting it up The one woman receptionist scolded at me and kept rolling her eyes like I was annoying her. Then the other male receptionist tells me to go find somewhere out in the lobby to wait then the lady who was setting up my MRA, asked about times that would be best for me, and trying to confirm a time with radiology, all of a sudden the male receptionist interrupts her while she's on the phone and talking to me, says hey tell them that we have another patient coming and he jumps into our conversation and out loud blurt out my personal information and what all they were doing! Not only that he says they won't be doing surgery!Very VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! I'd rather die then come here again. I left in tears!

Mayo Clinic iv infiltration negligent nurses

Medical Neglect and Cover up. I was injured By PCU Nurses under the Mayo Health System. I had IV Infiltrated My Arm Swelled up and the Nurse didn't Follow Standard procedures. Instead of removing IV Line. She Attempts to Reinsert the Needle three more times into my Swollen Arm. The PCU Nurse Missed the Artery and Left the IV with Fluid still building in my Arm for another Two Hours. The Nurse Doesn't Document her actions and when I send a Letter of intent. I have a meeting with MAYO, The people at the time of treatment that Are Responsible. Their own Chief Nurse and other Supervisors admitted to me that the Nurses Screwed up. So to be clear. The Mayo Health Systems is much like a Child Molester, Their Sorry but they do not feel they should be held accountable for their actions. Today 07/17/2018 The Mayo Health team called me and Stated because they have moved from Waycross Georgia They are not Responsible. I ask any that see this to take 20 Seconds and call this number [protected]. Just ask why are they not taking Responsibility For Causing Nerve Damage to John Whittaker, Then Hang up. Mayo Clinic total knee replacement

Had my knee replaced December 2015. Twenty One months later another clinic did Reconstructive Surgery. The EXPERIENCE was much better. After the first surgery I did not attend a Physical Theraphy due to a booklet MAYO gave me and a discussion with the Surgeon . MAYO as of yesterday says I was to attend PT. However the doctor sent a letter a few months ago after I complained, The we do not send every patient to PT after a 2 week follow up phone call . That phone call happened however my records indicate no one told me I was a candidate for Physical Theraphy . I have several after surgery documents that never mention PT. I received a booklet of exercises to perform at home per the Surgeons conversation prior to surgery . Also, a check list document for Pre Surgery and Post Surgery states, when you get home continue to do the exercises you learned in the hospital. I feel strongly that if, I had gone to PT after the surgery the revision surgery would have not been necessary.

Mayo Clinic Terrible place

The Mayo Clinic has a good reputation among people I know, so when a special reason has happened I decided to visit it. I was at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. After the diagnostics, I went home. The doctor had to call me regarding the results. It has been a month since then :( Nobody called me. At first, I thought that maybe they wrote my number down in a wrong way or something like this and called them. Nobody wanted to help. When I eventually was transferred to the doctor, who didn't say anything clear about my diagnosis as if he couldn't understand what I was suffering from, which was not true. I have to look for another clinic and spend other hundreds of dollars to get my diagnosis...

Mayo Clinic Liver cancer

Hello my name is Paul Walker:

I've been diagnosed with stage 4 Liver Cancer by the Minneapolis VA Medical Center on 1/30/2015. There is a big scandal here because they are not helping Veteran's with cancer in a timely matter and letting them die as shown on Kare 11 News story. I'm stuck in the middle of this. I'm a 100% P & T Disabled Veteran non combat. I'm having problems in getting timely bile duct liver cancer treatment and care at the Minneapolis VA Hospital for stage 4 liver cancer diagnosed about a month ago. I have severe liver pain with several tumors and one the size of a base ball making it hard for me to breathe and they ( VA Hospital ) refuse to give me a stronger pain medicine for it.

I just got a new VA Doctor that is now helping me with severe liver cancer pain. Thank God.

Plus as you know I'm caught up in the Minneapolis VA Medical Center Cancer scandal here as it was reported on Kare 11 News several months ago. My first time to the Emergency room 1/30/2015 they did several tests and helped me. Now I've been back to the ER and Dr. S. Folley Dunna refused to help me and I'm suffering very much.

I only want to be treated fairly before I die. I'm very depressed and worried about my care there. I went and talked to my Dr. John Bassett and at first he said he would help but changed his mind and said he wouldn't. After I said that if I drop dead I hoped he would too because I' scared. I wished that I had not said that but I was scared for my life. My daughter witnessed this.

Then I reached out to the Mayo Cancer Clinic February 17, 2015 for charity medical help and sent them my application because I don't have Medical Insurance. On their web page they claim to help people like me but they don't. They refused to help me even though they get Millions $$$ in donations for helping people with cancer. They told me that before they'd help that I needed at least $5, 000 to put up front and I don't have that kind of money.

Thank God I got Mn.Medical Insurance and I now can go to the University of Mn. Masonic Cancer Clinic for a second opinion / treatment on 3/9/2015.

Shame on the Mayo Cancer Clinic in Rochester, Mn for not helping a dyeing man. May God have mercy on them. It seems like it's all about MONEY $$$. God help me.

My name is Penny Erickson, Sr. Financial Counselor for the U of M Masonic Cancer Clinic. Your recent e-mail was forwarded to me to review. I’m sorry for your unfortunate situation.

You indicated you are a 100% P & T Disabled Veteran and on US Post Office Disability.

Due to the fact that you have VA coverage – we are unable to extend free/charitable care to you.

I've asked the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for a referral but they refused ?

Thank God I now have Medical Insurance and they can see me if it's not to late.

Sincerely,
Penny Erickson, Sr. Financial Counselor

Mayo Clinic Failure to Take Medicare

If you read the Mayo Clinic website, it says that the Clinic takes Medicare. But this isn't really true. Many of the departments in Arizona will no longer accept new Medicare. This includes Medicare patients with the top plan that pays 15% above normal Medicare. For instance, the gastrointestinal department has this policy. Even though President Obama cited Mayo Clinic has being a model of modern American medicine, these doctors are only interested in personal profit. They will not even accept 15% above the norm for their services and are only going to take people who can pay out of pocket (or have a platinum plated private plan that will pay much more than Medicare). We are headed towards a two-tier medical system: one for the extremely wealthy, and one for everyone else.

Forever grateful Mayo patient

One would think that the Mayo Clinic would consider Medicare patients on the basis of “The needs of the patient comes first “. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to internal medicine. Dr. WW Mayo, Dr Will and Dr Charlie are likely rolling in their graves over this policy.

Sure, I understand the unfortunate and unfair low payments made by Medicare however each patients situation should be carefully considered on an individual basis. In the last four years I have had over 300 visits to the clinic. What physician outside its walls could possibly keep up with this, let alone coordinate with specialists when he or she has no organizational input. So, the outcome is more visits to the specialists at the clinic. Fiscally sound? I think not.

Yes, the scheduling department kept me on hold for 8 minutes while they confirmed my insurance. I'd been a previous patient at Mayo Scottsdale but retired May, 2019. Even though I was a previous patient, upon retiring from a small company in NM after 35 years and becoming a medicare primary, BCBS of NM secondary Mayo would not care for me. The founders of this once great facility would roll over in their graves. I should say once great facility. With this attitude, the clinic is nothing more than a profiteer, not a caregiver.

Mayo Clinic Bad service and attitude

My friend advised me to visit the website www.mayoclinic.com in order to find good doctor. I started to use the website and found the doctor. I made the appointment, but the day before the appointment, the doctor’s assistant contacted me and rescheduled the appointment. They did it twice and I was really disappointed with such services and attitude.I wonder if there are other people, who had the same experience. Let’s share views about this website.

Mayo Clinic Price of Endoscopy

I am writing this complaint because I think the Mayo Clinic is charging ridiculous amounts of money for their services. For example, I had an endoscopy done by them and their charges before it hit my insurance was over $3000. That is over double the national average for this exam. How can they possibly justify that?
Not to mention the fact that I had to wait 3 hours in the waiting room AFTER my schedule appointment time before I was called in and then bam the test took a whole 10 minutes.
They are doing this because of 2 reasons: 1. they have no competition in rochester and they think they are god's gift to the earth, and 2. they are lining the pockets of their board members and doctors at the price of the patient.
My recommendation: Fly to Mexico and have all of your work done there, or at least a big city where there's more competition. The insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals are all in bed with the government and all getting filthy rich in the process.

I live in Rochester and have been a patient at Mayo. I do not have my family go there any more. I believe they not only overcharge but also overprescribe. They gave my 2 month old an unnecessary MRI. This cost 3K and I am personally out 1K for it. It was useless. However they insisted it was necessary. Well it turned out to be unnecessary. I had stomach pain and my doctor suggested maybe I had a kidney stone. That would have rang up a huge bill. I said a stomach ache does not indicate a kidney stone. They lost 2.6 billion last year and are desperate to do procedures to charge out there losses.
Try Olmsted or go up to the cities.

Mayo Clinic Refusal of Service

After 15 years as a patient and scheduled appointments with 3 specialists at the Clinic this year,
the primary care department and Dr. Bruce Kimbel, M.D., (who has been my doctor for 10 years) have
refused to schedule me in as a patient to see him
because I have not been into his office for 3 years.
I received no notice of this policy and they will not
reinstate me. This is bad because your Primary Doctor at Mayo is the one that schedules blood tests, chest X-rays, colonscopy, gives shots and schedules
you with specialists. That Department and the
Patient Liaison Dept. have both refused to re-instate
me. I am a Medicare patient with Supplemental insurance and I have agreed to personally pay any
additional costs that my insurances will not pay.
I have always done this in the past. I cannot under-
stand no loyalty for being a long-time patient, not
notifying me and them not listening to my request
for reinstatement. My husband is also a patient
of Dr. Kimbel but he has not been denied service.
I was in Dr. Kimbel's office 90 days ago with my
husband. Now, I cannot see him for myself. Using
Mayo Clinic as our primary health care source was
one of the main reasons we moved to Scottsdale. Has
anyone had this problem?

I have had great care at Mayo but have found the organization in the neurology department in Phoenix is not designed well for tertiary care. In Phoenix it is very hard when I have need of a quick resolution in my care to reach a doctor let alone a nurse either practioner nurse or just on staff nurse. I am better off going to the emergency room at the Mayo Hospital. You cannot just call in and get a quick response from your doctor.

In the neurology group in Phoenix that I deal with, apparently that department is short on neurologist and the doctors there are too busy because of the shortage. This gap in their ability to respond is troubling. Patients like myself who have come to Mayo with a resulting diagnosis of a disease that is rare and dangerous at times often need a fast response in their care from the neurology group to avoid going to an emergency room where even those doctors do not understand the disease. I have experienced this problem repeatedly since I went to Mayo to be diagnosed and treated. It has been approximately five years now but the situation with the response to quickly help patients at least in that group has not improved and in fact it has worsened.

My response now has been to seek out other doctors, neurologist, and cardiologist within the city who are specializing in this type of disease. I am sorry to say that diagnosing a patient's disease is the only phase the Mayo neurology group in Phoenix is good at. They are not able to respond in a timely matter to patient needs to avoid a hospital emergency room and possible hospital stay at all. And most definitely do not respond to even a patient's inquiry concerning their care. I can say that with absolute proof and my last event convinced me that I had to go elsewhere for ongoing care.

A typical example of what I have been saying just happened. My latest A Typical event that I call crashing happened on 10-7 and continued through 10-9. I avoided the hospital but only because my current DO with Honors called my Mayo neurologist directly and talked with the neurologist at Mayo who adjusted my heart meds slightly to bring my BP that climbed to196/125 during the event down. However, it took the DO two days to get though to my neurologist and I got the medication change on Friday afternoon. It did help and I did not got to the emergency room but it was close.

On Monday 10-10-16 after the event had resolved, I had sent in an email with some current stats for my neurologist and a request for the name of a Mayo cardiologist so in the future I was not so dependent on my neurologist for heart meds. The neurologist along with my husband had discussed the cardiologist and my emailing in the information during my events on my last visit with him. He knows he is too loaded with patients but still wants info on the events as this is still a very rare disease and the A Typical events give him more info that he wants to consider for all patients with this disease. So I have continued giving him more information for his knowledge base as it happens. I did not know the doctor was on vacation starting that week but it should not have made any difference. I sent in the stats on the event and then asked for the name of the cardiologist he would like to refer me to and noted my kidneys seemed to be impacted on this last event and since I was coming in for a warfarin blood test should I have a urine sample done while I was there?

The response from his nurse after that email on the patient portal was terse at best and I responded to the nurse's email to me on their patient care portal that same morning immediately. I asked for a call back to discuss her response and had hoped to talk with her about her obvious ire about the emails which she informed me were not there for the information I was sending the doctor, maybe some upset at having an outside doctor basically insist on talking with the neurologist, and some of her other obvious dislikes in my behavior. I followed the email request up with a call that afternoon. This is Friday and the nurse has still not responded to my request for a call. What else can I say? Not even an email to explain why she is unable to respond! I am disappointed in the demeanor of the staff. Something is not right when the nurse refuses to return calls from patients and is miffed when a patient dares step out of whatever box of behavior the staff has devised. This goes from the receptionist to the nurses in that group. I do not feel that going forward this is acceptable and there are alternatives. And for me my health as a professional should have been her first concern. I really like the neurologist but along with being short staffed the culture of the staff within this group is also a concern for me.

Their in business! Period. Please make sure you get a receipt when presenting your insurance information. Somehow, some way, they have a knack of mishandling, losing, or "no insurance stated". You will end being sent to collection and paying out of pocket for their sloppy customer service.

Mayo is good at what they do, you walk in the music is so nice, it is like a hotel, they ease your mind, but it is a cult like place, they pass you around to milk your insurance in each department. If you don't have money to pay, or have really good insurance, you are second class...They no longer collect co-pays like they use too, so you get behind. I was turned over the credit agency for a 25 dollar co-payment that I never received a bill for, I thought it was illegal not to collect the co-pay...But it makes sense, If a patient does not have the co-pay to pay at the time of services. The cancel their appointment, So May has decided to not collect the co-pay at the time of service but bill insurance company, But they did not think through that they have to bill the patient the co-pay in a timely manner, so what they do is turn you over to a collection agency, ruin your credit because they did not do proper billing. Then the ban you from getting any other service in there hospitals until you pay your bill. They are like any other hospital, just build more beautiful, with soothing music and state of the art, paintings, and decorations, so your mind does not know when you are being mistreated...

Mayo Clinic needs to live up to their stated goals of public service and compassion. They have a responsibility to serve the community they set up shop in, not just skim profit at a huge markup under guise of an educational organization doing research. Being a 800 pound Gorilla in the medical world Mayo drives away competent private practitioners from the neighborhoods they operate in and then create a monopoly for themselves making it possible to DICTATE arbitrary one sided conditions to patients. This is not decent, perhaps not even legal.

That's not been my experience. I've found Mayo to be the BEST in my entire life. As an aside, I've seen medical facilities with great new equipment, but that equipment isn't the best choice for the MRI that is needed. Personally, if someone was going to offer me a specialized MRI for $500, I'd turn around and run like hell.
Calling any instructional medical facility 'filled with nazi's' is just plain ridiculous. I hate to tell you, but just about every hospital is an instructional medical facility; you just aren't informed enough to know so. I also hate to tell you that sometimes, PATIENTS DIE. We all die, and most die after receiving medical care, which was the best effort, but for one reason or another, was not able to save them. Personally, I'll stick with Mayo. I consider it the best in the world, and can give you first-hand examples of why, if you have a couple of days to hear about them.
I just think you should seek out medical care elsewhere. I doubt you are going to be happy there either.

i had a baaad experience with mayo clinic in scottsdale, AZ. They are a joke. for a simple MRI 7000 dollars, went through and on an ANCIENT scanner. Few months later i need another MRI and outsourced it to a MRI place near my home that was cutting edge and a super modern scanner for 500 bucks... what the heck mayo? Both out of pocket. Then the doctor was all fidgety about doing it elsewhere when infact it was higher resolution at the cheaper place. two weeks later he cancels on me! Talk about a rip off, avoid mayo clinic, they are nothing but a scam. Most of the doctors students are all amatures. One of my friends dad was KILLED by an ignorant mistake by a student doctor. Its a school and filled with nazis doctors with crazy ideas that end up killing patients. You never hear the bad because of their million dollar marketing. its a sick scam. Most of the damn nurses are immigrants as well as doctors. Its just a big fat money grab.

mayo clinic in rochester, mn. has sharply declined.after enduring two painful extremity surgeries, first procedure failed, second surgery failed by a so called expert my care needs were not met.multiple screw ups by dr. and staff.i complained to patient affairs office only to be politiced around and threatened that the doctors would not help me with health concerns and told i had to sign a contract, if i would not sign it they would refuse to provide any health care.i will not sign it.this sounds illegal.mayos only concern is greed and cya-ing.has anyone heard of such contract between drs. and patients.mayo clinic needs better management.

Dicouraged,
I might suggest to you, in Rochester, there is a Patient Services Department in the Gonda Building, on the first floor, that is there to hear any complaints such as the condescension you mentioned. I once had a questionable situation occur with a nurse practitioner, and had no concerns in bringing it to their attention.
Hope that helps.

Mayo Clinic Surgical error & subsequent mistreatment

On October 12, 2001 I went into the Mayo Clinic, (St. Luke's Hospital) Jacksonville, Florida for open-heart surgery. I was told I would be in there for six days.

Due to a careless mistake the Mayo punctured my stomach in two places. I was their involuntary guest for almost five weeks. While in the Mayo one of my lungs collapsed, I contracted MRSA, peritonitis, pneumonia and my gall bladder stopped working. When I went home it was as a decrepit invalid with drainage bottles hanging from me, infected with invasive candidiasis (from which, four out of ten people who get it, die), a collapsed lung, suffering from excruciatingly painful bedsores and an agonizingly painful wound in my abdomen which, despite following the Mayo's recommendations to the letter, would not heal.

Due to their mistake, the Mayo Clinic nearly killed me, caused me much agony, took over two years of my life away, and then, after agreeing to cancel their bill (to see the Mayo's letter agreeing this, please view page 6 at www.mayovictim.com), waited until the time limit for filing a medical malpractice suit ran out and then, in May 2005, sued me. I am stunned that the directors of an organization that professes lofty aims and ideals do not know what is going on at the Mayo, and if they do, by not correcting it, condone it. A time line, copies of documents, letters and photographs detailing my Mayo Clinic experiences and subsequent events may be found on this site: www.mayovictim.com

If you start billing for using the portal, I will stop using the portal while I seek another medical provider.

No wonder your doctors are leaving in droves.

On Sept. 30, 2022 I had an appointment at Mayo Clinic (Florida) to see a Pain doctor for the 1st time. The doctor spent approximately 10 minutes talking to me and referred me back to my primary care doctor. No treatment was offered. Bill for this initial consult (only seeing the doctor) was $707.00 This is excessive and insurance denied the claim.

I saw a post from an Ob/Gyne md who stated she works at Mayo Clinic. Very disturbing that one of the MDs would actually post this. I hope this gets investigated.
