This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback.

I ordered this from a TV ad on 5/15/08 which stated that you had 30 days to use it before being charged. I was charged immediately in the amount of $47.90. I finally received the Magic Jack and it does not work on my computer. There is not a telephone number for the company with the package nor is there one provided on their website.

Please advise smb!

I am not sure if any one here has noticed voice quality issues, call drops and intermitten poweroutages on the device. After I bought it in a store I hooked it up via the usb cable and it worked ok for a month so I bought an extended 5 year plan. at this time the device was fine. After a while I noticed call drops poor quality and intermitten power bugs. I immediatley went and asked for support. I had to reset this turn volume up that and a whole bunch of stupid things I already had done (mind you within the time for warranty replacement service for free. this last month I had owned the device for a year with 15 tech support requests prior and I am not sure if you noticed the strange global weather patterns but I have, and the usb male connector on the magic jack was off in the usb extension cable it came with. I got out my IT pliers and pulled it out and felt the connections to see if it may have overheated and the solder came loose. Not the case. They were sticky. The were adheared to the device with Glue. People need to know that this is a faulty product in some cases. I am sure not all are made cheaply but a batch were, and the company refuses to do the right thing. I asked for my subscription to be cancelled on the 30th its still on, also I have not recieved my money back for the 5 years. I am sending the device vaccume sealed to my Satae AG and ask they pass it on to the FCC when they are done. If this sounds like your problems I would suggest you do the same.

I actually bought a total of four, for family members. All working great, I also used the extension cords so the actual product is not removed & inserted over & over. Although above all there is things to keep in mind:

1) You pay $20 for a year or $60 for five, you should not expect the same support & staff as you do for a phone company with a monthly bill.

2) Company is still relatively new, there is going to be growing pains

I have five year plans on three of them, two of which I personally use as a land line (also when I travel) and a fax line. All work without a hitch and the lines are clear! All of them work great, and again I have to remind people you are saving every month and there is a price for that, which are mediocre service and currently unable to call some toll free numbers. I'm fine with both as the issues I did have got resolved by them (they were applying the 5 year plans to the right numbers) and there is always local numbers offered with those toll free numbers, plus I am pretty sure that issue will be fixed eventually.

Most of the time I had a clear line, very rarely was there an issue with the call being choppy and a simple calling back clears it up.

The original complaint was 2 years ago, since then there has been a lot of improvement in the service. From my experience the savings far outweigh any of the minor issues I had, and good enough to replace my land line permanently!

A couple other issues is the magicjack menu pops up whenever you are calling, being called or hanging up. It sucks when you are doing other tasks especially gaming, I believe it is so you are forced to view any of their advertisements. There is work arounds...

The complaints everyone is talking about are true. I've had magic jack for a while and for the first month it was fine. I fired my phone company and now wished I had not. Customer service sucks. Should have known if it is too good to be true, well you know the rest. Poor quality, poor support, equals bad product. I have contacted customer support with no avail. I had to completely unplugged it because it was freezing my computer. As long as it was not plugged in my computer it was fine. I will be going back to qwest phone service because the magic jack is bad and not dependable. I am a disabled person and must have a lifeline. If you would like to die because your phone doesn't work then get magic jack. I was trying to save money because my income is limited, what a mistake. This is definitely a flimflam product and I would not recommend it to anyone. Hopefully the gov't, the post office, and what other agencies might hear about this, we'll do something about it. It is a scam and should be treated as such.

Anyone have USB connection problems? Well I know why! They don't solder the contacts on the USB connection to the PCB. So if you remove and replug your unit to use on different computers the contacts will eventually separate and will no longer function unless you wiggle the unit a bit. Magic Jack will charge you $20.00 for a unit which is Flawed by design. This is illegal practice to force MJ customers to buy new units. Don't bother buying a 5 year plan because you will waste all your money replace your units 1-2 times a year.

$20.00 fricking bucks to replace the unit because the usb contacts are not soldered in.. Talk about.. Scammers!

There is a Physical Flaw with the Magic jack. If you look inside the USB connector you will see the contacts are not soldered in. So after awhile, as you remove or replug the unit back in the contacts start to get seperated. The gap (non connection), causes the USB to give a error message in windows. This can easily be fixed if the magic jack folks would solder the contacts. However, I think they do this on purpose to sell replaceable units at $20.00 a piece. Initially when i mentioned this to them, they offered a replacement unit for 10 dollars. But now they want $20.00. This is VERY bad business practice. There Live customer support, they keep transferring me to another agent because i think this is a common problem. Have any of you had the issue where.. the unit will work sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. Well you can say thanks to a intentional job at not soldering the contacts on the USB connector on the PCB.. Go Look! you will see what i mean. This is BAD BAD business practice.

I need to talk to someone @ Magicjack that will tell me how to change my Magicjack phone number to my land line number so I can cancel AT &T.
I need a fast response so I can get away from AT&T.
Waiting on your answer. I cannot give up my land line number because I have had that same number for the last 21 years...

I have three mjs. They all work fine. All voip takes getting used to, all brands, skype, vonage, voipbusters, all the others. Each has its quirks and it's not for everyone. That said, MJ is fine. It's as good as the others and a lot cheaper. Service? Non-existant. Those phony infomaercials and brochures that come in the package when you order something from another company? Mostly full of lies. I don't know why they feel the need to lie. It is a great product. $40 first year, $20 each year there after. Unlimited calling to the US and Canada. Not, it's not technically a "free" trial since you have to get it back to them in time and they don't make that easy. And, it's not totally free since you have to pay the annual fee, which is dirt cheap. Other than that, it is great!

I LOVE my MJ. She's more than a wonderful personal secretary. She keeps track of ALL my calls, in and out. Highlights my missed calls...even leaves me a real live message in my e-mail! Keeps all my phone #'s ready for me. Even what time and for how long I have talked. I am so impressed with MJ, and I don't work for her Daddy's company. Personally I'm scared that the big companies will find a way to mess our good thing up, but in the meantime I'm going to enjoy every almost free day that MJ is with me. Her pay, hours and benefits are almost unbelievable, she's just too good to be true.I don't know how I lived without her. Once you see MJ's organized call list, you will never go back to regular Caller ID. I just want to tell the world about my love affair with MJ...she does so much of my work...I have more time to go fishing!

I can not believe the intelligence of the average American! Hey mogmios! You are a software engineer! This product is so easy to use a child can set it up! The specs needed to run a magicjack, (MJ), are clearly listed in their adds. If your computer is so old it does not have a USB port I doubt very much it meets the requirements to run a MJ! I live on a limited income. I ordered a MJ online in 12/08 and had it in three days. I have since used it with Comcast, Sprint, Charter, and a few other Internet providers. I have even run it through a wireless router! They let you know up front that support is only reached through their chat service. I have had to use their support for a few minor problems and was very happy with the knowledge of their techs! I also had a problem with billing. They did not charge me until the thirty day trial was up and during that time I had to cancel the card I bought it with. I had no problem changing billing info over the chat line. I moved once and damaged the unit, (my fault). MJ sent me a new unit with a free return mailer. They never charged me a penny extra! How about the guy who does not know what card he bought it with. Why don't you try and look at your credit card statements? Or is that more work than crying about a great product because you are too ignorant to use it! I have many frineds who have bought them and not one is sorry! My cousin owns one of the biggest Re-Max offices in southern Florida and all her phones are run on Magic Jacks! In 12/09 I paid for my second year of service. $19.50 and no bill until 12/10. How can you beat this? My fiancee has been paying forty dollars a month for unlimited long distance. We just bought her a computer. Now she pays $20/month for 1GB Internet, (the slowest her provider offers), and it still runs fine! The way I see it she is getting her Internet free and still saving $20/month. You can even bring MJ overseas with you. Plug it in to any high speed Internet provider's computer, plug a phone in the jack and call anywhere is the USA for free! Come on people, I am not a tweeter, facebooker, or any of that modern crap. I still write with a pencil. But I do have a college degree and I know a great product when I see one! Going on 1 and 1/2 years now with Magic Jack and all I can say is good bye to all the rip off phone companies! I actually only use a pre-paid cell phone when a way from home for emergencies only! Why not. I call everywhere in the country with my MJ and it is great! Free unlimited 411, 911 service, voice mail, (which also sends you an email to your computer so you can pick up your messages while reading your emails), call waiting, caller ID. I can not believe all the complaints. I agree with who ever said they are probably from people who are afraid MJ may put their phone companies out of business! If you are hurting for cash like me, and have even very limited skill using a computer, don't be discouraged by these comlaints! They are groundless! I have no interest in MJ. I do not know anyone who works for them. I just hate seeing people spend so much on phone service when such a great product is available. Sorry if I may sound harsh to those having so many problems but I really believe that you either have ancient computers, very, very, poor Internet service, or just plain should not be allowed to operate any machinery at all! Keep up the good work Magic Jack! Thanks for saving me a bundle of cash! Keep those phone companies on the run! Tom I.

I am in the Philippines. Placed my order online a week before a trip to CA. It was there the day after I arrived. I have been using it since Jan. '10 on my 8yro Sony desktop running XP Home. Almost all calls have been as good as a landline. A few have been a bit choppy and I'm sure it is not magicJack. It is either my internet connection or the cellphone I am calling. Can't commit on CS as I have had 0 problems.

I bought this magicjack almost two years ago because they said as soon as they got Canadian numbers we will be given a local number. I have not been able to use this piece of garbage. The sound quality is really bad and now they want me to pay to get a Canadian number. They have $20 worth of credit in my long distance account and I cannot use this thing to call anywhere. They billed me for the 5 year platinum plan and now they want me to pay to for a new extension after almost 2 years.

These people are thieves and we need to file a complaint with the FCC and the BBB>

I have had magic jack for over a year. I am not at all satisfied. sometimes it works okay, other times not at all. Currently, my outbound calls are suspended for "overuse" of the product. I had already paid another year's service before I found this out. I tried to change my phone number and it will not allow me to do that. I tried talking to Two chat service reps and Two supervisors and none of them can help me resolve my problem. I will not buy another magic jack and do not and will not tell anyone anything but bad about it. I am totally not satisfied. The number given to me by my service rep did not work at all and I cannot resolve this problem It is worth only what you pay for it and not a penny more. It SUCKS.

I have been very happy with Magic Jack and have absolutely no complaint -- until it came time to renew after my first year. Wow!

They say I have 2 accounts.

I have 1 number, paid 1 bill. They say I ordered one an e-mail (my current e-mail) and registered under an e-mail that no longer exists. They said that created 2 accounts.

They are saying that I cannot pay a bill for one year under the e-mail I originally ordered under and that I have to create a new e-mail in order to pay for another year of service.

My experience with Magic Jack has been as advertised for this first year and as I said, I have been very happy with it. I have gotten a few customers for Magic Jack based on my recommendation.

Their position simply does not make sense to me. Does anyone understand it?

I've had some problems with quality of calls. The big issue is that the contact list disappeared with an auto upgrade.. The customer support is terrible. I was told to wait 24 hrs for an email from tech support. After I did not receive the email I got the worst person saying that they where the highest level of help that I could get. He waited over30 mins to tell me he was a supervisor. I ask for a manager and the answer was "no".
I will send a letter to Name: Magic Jack Address: P.O. Box 6846 West Palm Beach, FL 33405
Phone: [protected]
and the BBB.

BBB processed a total of 0 complaints about this company in the last 36 months, our standard reporting period.

We need to send our complaints to them ASAP.

my brother and uncle were using magic jack to call our relatives here in the States, so far, they had no complaints. The amount of money they had saved instead of paying for long distance calls had already offset the cost of the units. I bought two units yesterday and I'm gonna send them overseas. Before I have to pay 2 dollars for a 13 minute call overseas, now my relatives can call us free for unlimited minutes for one year.
If a user is a frequent overseas caller, the magic jack is really worth it.

I agree that Magic Jack is a rip off! But it is sold in Wal Mart so one would think that the product and service would great. I am going to contact War Mart to see what they say about carrying such a horrible product in their inventory. I hope more individuals will do the same. If War Mart gets enough complaints I am sure they will drop Magic Jack from their inventory. Just a word form Walmart may put an end to this situation

FRAUD +++ SCAM+++ FRAUD!

Visited the Magic Jack website to look into it for my mother to have an alternate phone for long distance business calls. Started to order but then decided to hold off and wait to look into it further when it had my undivided attention. I didn't go further than putting my card number in the card number field - then STOPPED. Didn't hit, or see for that matter, a submit button. Just closed the window and left my desk as I was at work and had something that came up that required my attention. Do you know THEY CHARGED MY DEBIT CARD FOR TWO?! Canceled my “order” but then couldn’t “refund” me for an order I never placed! Even the homeboys in the hood get a little more creative with their cons.

Magic Jack is nothing but a bunch of thieves!

I purchased MJ 2 months ago, and still not able to use it. I have gone online to their live chatts 7 times, about 2 hours per chat. Went thru several steps, many chats the same steps...and still does not work! I can make and receive calls, but all I hear is echos during the ringing process, then when I answer, it echos over and over with pauses in between. Then my comp. freezes up!

I am really ticked off! I bought this stupid thing for a total of 50 bucks at radio shack. It was my only way of getting in contact with anyone and I desperately needed something inexpensive. I now have no way other than wasting my gas on driving to a pay phone to call someone. What if I had an emergency? I've been having a lot of health problems and now I'm worried that if the issue I have now, worsens, I won't be able to call anyone for help. These are hard times and I can't afford a cell phone bill. Magic Jack is a piece of junk. I guess I need to drive up to radio shack and ask for a refund or a new magic jack until I can afford something else. I'm not happy at all. Even if there is a number for me to call, I'd still have to drive around to find a payphone in this crappy city. Now I'm going to have to find the cheapest phone company and spend more money that I don't have. Definately will not use Magic Jack after I get a new phone line. Piece of CRAP! This is just another annoying issue that I'm sick of dealing with. Thanks crap-holes.

Severely annoyed with Magic Jack,
KK

Whatever said by our friends above are true, this company MJ must be taken to task by the US government. I had a bitter experience, simply spending 4 to 5 hrs a day result is patient is dead. V.poor product, they do lot of tricks to register the product. Once the computer is re-started it doen't work. I am really worried they if they are able to access our computer they may steal some information from that. BEWARE GUYS

I bought a magic jack and spent over 12 hrs online with their techs to no avil. Nobody knows anything. If those so called techs don't know what they're doing, then thats the problem in a nutshell. All they could tell me was to try another computer or buy a new phone. If it cheap its too good to be true.

as usual, it was too good to be true, i bought a magic jack and could not get it to work. I spent almost 12 hrs with the magic jack techs and all they could come up with is try using another computer or get a new magic jack from the vender i bought it from. it sure is a scam if you ask me.

A personal experience story with this product ... to let others know that Magic Jack Phone product's online ad is a lie.

Their online ad says " (quoted directly from their web site ...

"Use our Phone Service free for 30 days, make all the free calls you please. 100% Risk FREE - you pay nothing."

Magic jack web site ...http://www.magicjack.com/

My personal experience ... we ordered the Magic jack online and received it almost 2 weeks later, upon opening the product and reading the instructions we discovered that the product would not work in our area code. Apparently they have only gotten permission for certain area codes. So anyone who would have called us who lived in our area code (which is the majority of our family and our friends) would have been charged long distance just for calling us, and we would also be charged long distance if we called them. So I got online to find out what the deal was ... because their web site does not say anything about making sure your area code is available ... (probably buried in the small fine print somewhere) and I ended up chatting live with one of their rep's about the problem and he confirmed that we would be charged long distance, so I told him that we would be returning the product if that was the case, also he couldn't guarantee that they would ever get our area code available ... but that is not the real problem. The real problem came when I went to return the product.
To make a long story short THEY are saying we did not return it in time for the 30 expiration ... so we would not get a refund.
I could not understand when their ad says USE IT for 30 days free and we didn't even use the product let alone for 30 day free trial.
After finding the E mail saying we would not get a refund I went to their web site to talk to one of their reps through their live customer service chat ... The CUSTOMER SERVICE REP WAS adament we would not get a refund. Even after a long chat where I explained it all to them. "Policy is policy" is what she had to say.

We placed our order on July 14th ... and then we received an E mail on July 17th saying we had to return the product by July 31st IF we needed a refund. How is that a 30 day free trial?
I guess they don't know how to do math either.

"Buyer beware" ... just a warning for those considering ordering this product, like the old saying goes "if it seems too good to be true it probably is" ... phone service for $19.95 a year and full refund if not satisfied ... 30 day free trial !

Yeah right!

Beware from whom you buy a Magic Jack.

We purchased a Magic Jack from a distributor overseas for her to be able to call us and not break the bank. She used the product for about a month when the USB connector broke away from the actual devise. Since May we have been trying to get her a replacement. The distributor said they are responsible and Magic Jack says he is responsibile. So, I am out! I wasted time and money on their shotty product.

When I asked their help line for a contact to their exec office, I was told they do not know the information.

So buyer beware of Magic Jack!

9If you really got rid of your hardline and cellphone, number 5 will probably apply to you

10 I use MJ and it works as expected. It's a slight annoyance when I start it up. I use my headset and microphone to talk through it. I loaned it to my mom and she's calling Germany regularly on it and has 0(zero for the 5'ers) complaints. My mom is on the verge of being a 5'er herself but she figured it out.

No it doesn't plug into the wall. no it's not meant to replace a hardline phone completely there are electrical and other concerns related to that. Yes it's handy. take a trip overseas and use it to check in. but above all if your a number 5 I need to know what was eating gilbert grape?
