LA Fitness International shabby ethical practice

Background ~ My brother and I are survivors from the “Results” to “Sports Connection” to “Bally Total Fitness” rollovers from the late seventies til 2011. The latest had blown away our lifetime membership guaranteed rate which just escalated with every renewal cycle. Our membership status is “Premier Plus Bally’s Total Fitness” with all the associated benefits. This was at the location 20040 Hawthorne Blvd in Torrance.

Segue to this recent episode, first there was the weirdness that happened thirty days prior to the unspoken L.A. Fitness transition announcement. Before the LA to Bally Total Fitness came to pass, a phenomena occurred only for the second time in our experience there. On the men’s side, the shower heads disappeared leaving the pipes poking out from showers. In short order just before the announcement, some odds-and-ends heads replaced them.

Then the clock in the men’s locker room disappeared. While there may be some questionable clientele members, this on retrospect has become highly suspect.

Nine days before the announcement that Bally’s was soon to be no more, we were pulled aside on checking in to receive this magnanimous offer --- 3 year membership offer for $400. Having over one year to go before needing to consider this, we declined this gracious ramp-up offer.

And then, BAM --- thank the LORD He helped us dodge that bullet. Within December, the “change” started to manifest in the removal of products, logos, etc. Passage in did not require a “log-in” of our ID. After 2012 rang in, oops – Jacuzzi down… down… still down as of yesterday. Okaaay…

Over time, we’ve had more than our share of bunged up drains, broken tiles, equipment failures, etc., but overall they usually were eventually taken care of.

Yesterday, of the eight men’s showers, six were without soap. Only the handicapped and one other had soap for all the members coming from the locker room, steam room, sauna, pool, etc. No happy campers. Some speculated since the gym is under new ownership, the members may need bring their own soap. I asked on exiting, but the little attendant at the desk was “surprised” to hear it. Whether they took care of the problem or not is unknown.

Looks like when you review the history of Bally or L.A. Fitness, they have a running history of problem reports with Better Business Bureau, Yelp, and this site. And that’s only scratching the surface. Interesting… Stay tuned, we may be back again “as the story unfolds”.

01/14/12 ~ Looks like BYOS (bring your own soap) is the new policy… and looks like the Jacuzzi is not coming back anytime soon. With a year (plus) to go, not looking good -- this place is slipping from bad to worse. They obviously are not interested in signing up any new folk. (Strike back to one star).

LA Fitness International poor quality

I have belonged the la fitness (240 wilmont rd. Tucson, AZ) for several years. Today- the facility was as usual dirty. Many of the lockers have broken lock attachments. Floors and general area is unkempt. The pool is a disgrace. The water is very cloudy and has "things" floating. The walls and floor of the pool need scrubing.Showers have hair in the drains all the time.Whtn I mentioned it to a manager, she replied that I should get the members to shower first. I replied that can not be controled but the quality of the pool can be.

In addtion, today there was a obviously mentally ill women there. Her ranting went on for hours in the locker room- sauna. Women were upset. When I mentioned this to the manager, she sadi that she had spoken to the women. She also said they don't discrimnate again mentally ill people. Do you recall Gabby Giffords was shot by a mentally ill person that no one did anything about? There is a phone number that contacts help.

The place is a mess. I hope you fix this problem or I will be going somewhere else along with others.

LA Fitness International unsanitary

I arrived this morning 12/11/2011 at 8:10 AM, went to the locker and saw that all the trash cans were overflowing and that there was debris all throughout the locker room. More then obvious that there hasn't been any janitorial service for a few days. Now, I have trained at 5 other LA locations during the past 7 years. All of them have been as clean as can be expected for high usage entities. Can someone please tell me, why a million dollar facility, barely 6 months old has been allowed to deteriorate to such substandard condition ?

The locker room, bathrooms, sinks, showers, pool & hot tub all need to be attended to several times a day. If not, every person who goes in there is at risk to come in contact with any number diseases.

Numerous members took cell phone pics and stated they were going to send them to corporate. Hope that helps.

To me, The club manager or operations manager is to blame for this problem, in that it is his/her responsibility to ensure that there
are no health or safety issues. We as members have an expectation of same.

Time will tell.

@ Chowderhead,
I apologize for not answering your comment first. The only staff I saw, was the girl at the desk. I know she had been advised, frequently. On my way out, I did see a zombie drone male wearing a dark blue LA shirt walking around . My gut instinct told me I would have more success talking to a door knob, then wasting my time speaking to him. I just go there to exercise, shower & leave. The less I talk or see those a$$holes, the better off I am.

Returned to the club on Tues. morning. I have no idea if all the complaining e mails and pics sent to corporate were the reason I observed male & female janitorial service being provided. The club looked good, the way it should be everyday. Of course I received no reply from corporate, nor, was I expecting any. Going to beat a dead horse with this next comment The only form of customer service which is in their vocabulary is 'none'..

LA Fitness International false information (lies)

I a member of both Bally's & LA, only due to work travel. When this club first opened I went in and acted like I knew nothing. The zombie at the front desk called 'El Dopeo' over to 'assist' me. I was really impressed that they were able to have it look like the seven other LA's that I have been to. Actually LA's that I have been to all have a lot of equipment. So, after the walk thru, back to dopey's desk for the sales pitch. He asked for my driver's license, I said no, I only have to show that to the police. The first lie; there is a sign up fee, there may may be, but don't fall for that. Next lie, electronic fund transfer only, because this is a new club. Not true. Many membership options, without the 'etf'. Next lie, We only have highly skilled & certified trainers. I said, oh, you mean the guy over there eating a kit kat bar, while counting reps for a client. I said thanks, but no thanks. BTW, the phone number I gave him was dial a prayer.
The management team has been changed three times since my first visit. Which was only about six months ago.

In that LA bought Bally's and closed a few of Bally's clubs (mine), the LA staff thought that this would be a huge financial windfall for them and the lies once again started. What they neglected to realize was that most of the former Bally's members had done their homework and were ready to file class action lawsuits. This forced LA corporate to come out with a press release. All life memberships will be recognized. All Bally's memberships will be recognized to term. If any LA sales weenie says anything different, guess what, they are lying. There may be a few exceptions to this, depending on the type of Bally's membership.

One thing must be understood. Excepting sales, most of LA's employee's are minimum wage employee's, with little hope of anything else. The trainers only receive 5 or 6 bucks out of the 35 or 40 that you spend for the half hour. LA corporate only cares about the money, nothing else, not their employee's, not you, not me. It's called corporate indifference. That indifference emanates it's way downward to the lowest rung employee that we deal with every visit. None of which is any excuse for anyone to be treated as I have read in a lot of these posts
Sadly, since they closed Bally's, I have to go to this place. I cannot wait to be approached by a trainer.

LA Fitness International harassment

HORRENDOUS! Northridge, CA LA fitness location on 18670 Devonshire St has to be THE WORST LA fitness club I have ever attended.

I have had membership there for years and my mom has had on and off membership with them. I decided to take her a few weeks back to take her mind off of a memorial service we had to attend that day. We were going to have her attain a guest pass under me. My mom started walking into the gym, while I was still checking us in at front. The operations manager there started yelling at her to get back. She came back and he said he needed A, B, C to give her a guest pass.

He was giving us a hard time with his attitude, being rude, and taking his time. We had to get going after a while for memorial service. He sensed the "rushness" and after telling us that he was setting her up with a guest pass, he looks at us and says "you know what, I don't have to take this, I don't have to give you a guest pass." He started raising his voice and humiliating us right at the front desk where everybody checks in! He started accusing my mom that she was "sneaking" into the gym! I called HR the next day and they told me they had no right to deny the pass unless she had attended the gym within 6 months, was too old, too young, had some physical limitations. HR put a note under my name saying the next time we go, LA fitness has to honor the guest pass.

So we go the next time and the general manager somehow knows who we are and immediately says to us "you were here 3 weeks ago weren't you? Trying to get in? I can't over ride that." Then I told him clearly what HR told me and to look under my name for the HR note. He continued to give us a hard time and then blatantly lied that "any ex member of the gym cannot be issued a guest pass." ! I again had to REMIND HIM of LA fitness policy for guest passes. I caught a brief expression on his face that showed he was a little scared of being caught of blatantly violating policy. He then did us a "favor" of issuing a one day pass. He did NOT issue the 3 day pass as should have been given!

Also, apparently the operations manager clearly violated policy by telling my mom's identity and incident to the general manager, because after dealing with him for God knows how long, he started saying the same thing that "you were sneaking into the gym and you used abusive language." I was horrified that such FALSE accusations were put on my mom and I !

Above all he wouldn't even hear us out and said "This conversation is over!"

I would suggest people to sign up at a different gym in Northridge or wait for the new location in Woodland Hills.

Cons:
-Over 10 years old worn out equipment
-Most equipment is broken and remains broken for months with an "out of order sign" on it
-Dumbbells and mats are all over the place
-Locker rooms are very unsanitary
-Locker room bathroom doors have wide gaps which might make one think if people can see through
-Most lockers are broken
-HIgh theft location, front desk actually has fliers claiming indemnification
-Classes are changed all the time without notice, if you call ahead of time to find out, they usually don't know or will just lie to you that class is taking place. For example, the awesome Zumba instructor ditched LA fitness weeks ago. Apparently she didnt give any notice. LA fitness replaced her with someone who clearly CANNOT teach Zumba. I call every time before class to know who's teaching and they tell me Wendy (the awesome Zumba instructor). When I get there, she's not there.
-Most class instructors do not know what they are doing. Be careful of injuries
-Staff is extremely rude!
-Management is more rude than the staff!
-Management will practically yell at you and humiliate you in front of other clients and staff if you disagree with them!
-Very overcrowded, have to wait in line for most equipment

If you're on a mission to lose weight or just stay fit, it won't happen here. You might just gain some from the stress they give you with such rude service.

Don't expect to get any good classes, equipment, motivation, or service here. It won't happen.

LA Fitness International difficulty canceling membership

Below you will find a copy of the cancellation confirmation I received from LA Fitness after I went in and told the financial officer, Robert, that I wasn't leaving until he made arrangements to cancel my membership and refund the two months of extra billing they had racked up on my bank account. After he "acted" like he was looking up all my history, stated he didn't remember anything about my previous discussions with him, and said there was no paper trail in their computer system, he agreed to go ahead and refund my money. I also brought the manager into the discussion who said that there was nothing he could do because it was the financial officer's call. Robert finally agreed to refund my money for the 2 months they had charged me after my memberships was cancelled. The CATCH is, the effective date - as you will notice at the bottom of the cancellation. The membership ended August 31. The effective date on the notice below is the end of September; which takes in the final charge they applied to my account. Therefore, there will be no reimbursement for the extra 2 months of dues. I have these falsified effective dates for my trainer charges and my membership charges. I have eliminated my personal information.

Personal Training Membership Cancellation Confirmation

Today’s date: 10/4/2011
Customer #: 13...
Membership Barcode #: f40...
Member Name: C
Dues: $92.00
Final Billing Date: 9/21/2011

This confirms cancellation of your personal training agreement.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please call your local club during normal business hours.

Thank you for choosing LA Fitness.

LA Fitness International lied about membership

On August 15, 2011 I went into LA Fitness to discuss starting a membership for my husband and I. We have a new baby and I was told by the general manager Rod that the kids club wouldn't take any children younger than 3 months. I am a stay at home mom, who doesn't have anyone who can babysit, so the kids club was the MAIN reason I looked into using LA Fitness to work out. Our baby wasn't going to be 3 months until the beginning of September so I expressed to Rod that I didn't want to start my membership until the 1st of September.

He told me that it was okay, and that my membership wouldn't start until the first of September. I paid over $100 for the first and last months of membership, and he told me I could cancel anytime.

Fast forward to today. I receive a call from billing stating my account was deliquent. They said that my membership started August 15 and that I was being billed every 15th.

This is not the agreement I had with Rod and I feel like I was conned. I feel like the woman at billing was a bit rude to me and I am very unhappy with LA Fitness customer service as a whole.

I spoke with an Alicia when I called the number on the website and she told me she could cancel my membership over the phone and I wouldn't need to fill out any paper work. I am seriously doubting this and will be digging deeper today to find out if what she said was true.

Over all, I say avoid this gym if you can.

LA Fitness International customer service

LA Fitness has no customer feedback options on their website or at the local club. At the Town & Country club on Camelback, they play music throughout the club but at uncomfortable volume levels, which makes it hard to hear the audio I bring with me on my iPod. I've explained to the staff person or manager that the music is so loud I cannot hear my own music. They nod and smile and have even turned it down on request, but even after the adjustment, the volume is still quite loud. On my next visit, the volume is back up again. It's especially noticeable on Saturday and Sunday. As I was entering the club on a Sunday afternoon recently, two woman were discussing the volume with the person at the desk, who explained to them there was nothing she could do about it. Later in my workout, I also went up to ask if someone could turn it down, and a different staff person went into the control room and turned it down, then asked me if that was better. I couldn't tell if it was better because the speakers are back in the exercise areas, not at the front desk. Walking back through the club, the volume seemed slightly less, but in the back of the club near the racquetball courts, it was blasting away like before. When I come to exercise, I want to concentrate, but the loud volume levels here make me want to turn around and walk out the door again. This is not a night club. It's a fitness center with all ages and fitness levels. How about a little attentive care to the sound levels at LA Fitness? I have also had the front desk staff turn their backs on me during a conversation in which I've mentioned the loud sound before our conversation was finished. I suppose they were telling me they were done with the subject. Some of these people have very poor customer service skills. I like the facility and the location is excellent, but customer service here rates a zero.

LA Fitness International nasty place, plastic bags on urinals!!!

Finally, the nasty LA Fitness on Maxella closed in Marina Del Rey but, Ugh… we heard Decron’s owner, David Nagel now wants to put LA Fitness in his building called Playa Del Oro and that sucks!

I mean... LA Fitness sucks! LA Fitness got kicked out of Marina because they were the most filthy, nasty, stinky gym I ever had a chance to set my foot in. I had to crub my feet with bleach when I got out of there. This is my experiance, first in the middle of the summer they had no AC on, to save money, manager said. As I walked in I start sweating as Hebrew slave in old Egypt. But then I got shocked even more when the guy (Larry) took me to locker room and then BOOM first the sharp smell of amonia hit me follow by the nasty sight of PLASTIC BAGS ON ALL 3 URINALS!

One would think this was it … but wait, there is more! They had Plexiglas screwed on the side of the partition because the side was EATEN BY URINE and ongoing pissing everywhere but not in the urinals, this is now... disgusting!

Look at the pictures No2 on Yelp.com – Dear God, is the landlord stupid or something? if Decron puts stinky LA Fitness in this building I am out of here and I am sure I speak for at least dozen of my friends at Playa Del Oro complex which we thought will be kept nice...

LA Fitness International waste of my workout time

So after having my 2nd child I decided it was time to re-activate my gym account. No problem except that this week I was already late for the 7pm class (my ONLY available time slot M-F) and with my 22 pound kid in tow, I got stopped at the front desk by "Scotty" who promises to give me the "best workout of your entire life." Well, I'm already late but fine, sign me up...when? He insists I come in earlier. Ain't gonna happen. He manages to get me in on Thursday at 7pm. Fine, just let my people go! So I come in at 7pm but where's Scotty? Sitting his butt in a chair while I wait at the front counter. I know he saw me. Whatever, I get hooked up w/ a nice kid who spends the next 45 mins trying to get me to sign up for a year long commitment to training sessions. Nah, let me think about it. Oh no, must be done now. I'm leaning toward "yes" but then I get online & read a gazillion complaints about LA Fitness! OMG, people..do your homework! I highly recommend you don't get involved w/ such a scandalous company. It's pretty convenient for me and I got grandfathered in w/ a great deal but I'm just here to warn you. Check out other local options. Turns out "Scotty" is the manager. Go figure.

LA Fitness International club does not monitor whether members take showers before entering hot tub and pool area

Club does not monitor whether members take showers before entering Hot Tub and Pool Area. As a result, the majority of members do not shower. There is a sign in small print that has to be read up close to decipher. The Club also states that the Tub is cleaned and drained on a weekly basis. The Cleaning people are unaware of any such process.

LA Fitness International bad business practices

For almost 6 months (or since Pure Fitness was bought out by LA Fitness), the members have been sold a bill of goods. From promises that the air conditioning would be fixed to promises that the mildewed, smelly, worn carpet would be replaced and everything in between. I had been paying for personal training sessions; however, each trainer, one by one, either quit or was fired, making it almost impossible to schedule an appointment with the same trainer more than twice in a row. When it was Pure Fitness, the trainers were plentiful, accommodating and helpful and we were promised LA Fitness would provide more of the same - it most certainly did not. If a trainer or time slot was unavailable, that was just too bad. I filed a complaint with the BBB, spoke to the corporate office and explained that I continued to pay for personal training but was not able to schedule personal training. After many calls to corporate in California explaining my plight and asking for a refund of my previously paid personal training sessions and a cancellation of my membership, I was advised by Danielle that, although she completely understood my frustration, it was not their policy to do either but she'd see what she could do. After we went round and round, she finally moved a trainer from another facility to the Chandler facility where I had my membership. I was not offered anything else, no free training sessions, nothing. I began training with Ashley and, after a couple of training sessions, she was no longer available on my preferred days. As I was attempting to reschedule, I received a call from Ashley stating that the LA Fitness I belonged to was closing and that I'd have to attend the other Chandler LA Fitness (the one that is packed all the time, even before the other 3 Pure Fitnesses in the area closed and sent their members there); however, she was still not available during most times that were convenient for me. I, again, called Danielle (and her manager, Shawnee Haysum, who had previously advised me that if I ever needed anything further, I should contact her - I left 4 messages and never received a return phone call), again, explained my frustration and again asked that I please be refunded the $800 or so I had paid for training that I had been unable to use, and that I be released from my contract that was ending in 2 months. No dice. I explained that this was a very poor business practice and that, although it kept money in the pockets of LA Fitness in order for them to stay afloat, it was creating a very bad name for them as I, and most certainly others, have and will continue to spread the word about their terrible customer service. I finally got a letter from LA Fitness stating that I would not be receiving a refund or my payments, I would not be permitted to cancel my membership and that nothing further would be done to assist me.

LA Fitness International nursery care

I am a single mother of a two years old baby and also a stay at home mom. Going to the gym is our getaway, therefore I take it very seriously. Tbere has been several times that my baby has been hurt by other kids and even though I have requested for explanations and also talked to management nothing has been done to repair the damage; however, when this happen we take a few days off from going to the gym but nothing gets resolve.

Not disciplinary acctions are taken for those whom suppose to watch our children and care for them.
We as customer pay for La Fitness employees to have their job, so we should too have a appreciation and respect in return.
Also I have seen parents changing their children in the middle of the playing room. GROSS... and diseases waiting to happen (such as hepatitis A) etc.
When all of this negligence will stop? isn't there any other ways to hire qualify personnel?
and impose that hygiene is important too.

LA Fitness International rude training manager

Stay away from this gyms training program. The trainers are under paid, even though you pay a heck of alot for training.
The Training Manager will lie to you, train you for the first 3 days to keep you from cancelling your training package.
The TM is not a certified trainer he will tell you he is but he is NOT! He will hurt you due to his lack of training as a trainer then tell you this is why you need a trainer.
He is rude, sexually harrasses women clients and will not deal with any customer service issues.
Sad really because the gym itself is a nice clean gym with up todate equipment.

LA Fitness International horrible customer service

I've been a member with LA Fitness shortly after the doors opened in their Mill Creek, WA (approximately 3 years) location and started attending the Everett, WA location the same day the doors opened. My wife decided she wanted to join under my account, so she went in to inquire about it. There was a promotion going on that wasn't supposed to end for a few days, so she decided to join based on that promo. Well, after all her info was input into their system, the rep tells her that the system was allowing the code to go through, so she wouldn't be able to benefit from that promo. She decided to put it on hold and discuss it with me. I called the gym to inquire about it and they said that no one was available at the time and Harald would call me back. Well, Harald never called back (even after multiple calls to the gym for him), so I called again and asked for the manager. Surprising, Harald now became available since I was escalating to a manager. So after the phone conversation not going anywhere, we decided to go in and speak with Harald. He said basically the same thing the other rep said, so we finally decided on a membership that sort of worked. I really do felt that they were just trying to lure customers in with the promo and not honor it. If the system wasn't honoring the code at that time, then they should have applied it once they figured it out on their end. The manager Matthew never called back either (after leaving him a few voicemails).

After some time, my wife began traveling often, so we felt the membership wasn't needed. I called in to the local gym to cancel (because they have it designed where a customer can't cancel online, over the phone, or call into membership services to do it). After speaking with Mike, he said that I would have to physically come into the gym and fill out a cancelation form. I asked him if it could be faxed to me and I fax it back in...his reply was no, you have to physically come into the gym to do it. I told him that it sounded like LA Fitness wants customers to come into the gym so they can try and bargain about the cancellation and possibly more high pressured sales tactics. Mike's reply was "Are you kidding me, do you think we're going to high pressure you over a $29 membership, come on now" (and that's word-for-word). I immediately asked for a manager because Mike obviously thought he was talking to one of his boys on the block! Well, Harald gets on the phone and poses as the manager. I specifically asked Harald if he was the manager (I already knew he wasn't and that Matthew was) and his reply was yeah, sort of. I immediately asked him for corporate's number because I didn't appreciate asking for the gym manager and getting one of Mike's peers to pose as the manager. Harald's reply was that there wasn't a number to contact corporate. Really, do you expect me to believe that the reps in the Everett gym are the end-all be-all for LA Fitness! After searching the net, I found the number to member services and actually canceled my wife's account over the phone (after the Everett LA Fitness said you have to physically come in) and received a confirmation email on it.

I am now looking into a different gym for a membership for myself! The reps at the Everett LA Fitness gym have terrible customer service and I would never refer anyone to them again! Please beware of that gym. Their service was so bad that I don't even think I'll give the Mill Creek location a second try. I wouldn't want to keep investing in a business that rewards the Everett gym for their horrible service.

FYI...if anyone needs the number to their member services (because Everett gym won't give it to you and will tell you that you have to come in to cancel), here it is: [protected] (option 5)

Most continuity programs do not require you come in person to cancel. They typically require you provide confidential information only you should have available i.e account info, drivers license, passwords, etc. They don't require you come in person to sign up, so how would they know who's actually gaining a membership? There are plenty of circumstances in which canceling a membership in person would be inconvenient or just not possible. It's just a retention tactic, I used to work for 24 Hour Fitness.

They require YOU to come in person to cancel a membership to prove it is actually you who is canceling your membership and not some person with a grudge against you.

It is a good policy and YOU should be thanking them for looking out for you and by protecting your membership.

LA Fitness International unethical billing for personal training

Enrolled in their Personal Training Program and had problems from day 1. Their on-line documentation showed me having more training sessions than I actually had. I attempted to get it corrected 3 times with no success. And 1 session I did have was done by a person who wasn't even a Certified Trainer but I assumed he was as he was the Manager of the department. He paid little attention to me during that session as well. I showed up for another session and my assigned Trainer wasn't there and no one else took me but it still showed on sessions used. Funny that if I didn't show up when scheduled, I would be billed anyway. They would not terminate my contract and continued to bill my credit card. Still paying too even though I sent a 2 page detailed description to the main office of each and every falsified event. DON'T TRUST THEM AND DON'T JOIN.

LA Fitness International personal trainer contract

I have filed a complaint with the BBB regarding LA Fitness taking money from my acount after I cancelled the personal trainer membership. LA Fitness has violated my rights to cancel the membership within a reasonable, allowable, and allocable timeframe. It violates my right to cancel services I feel are not adequate, reasonable and professional. LA Fitness wants to bind a person to the contract and still collect money; they state that you either have to be sick or dead to get out of the contract, you just cannot cancel the contract because you do not want their service. This is a violation of contract law. I am seeking a lawyer to start a class action lawsuit. Any information regarding LA Fitness contract(s) will greatly help me in my pursuit to sue LA Fitness.

I had the same experience. I was never told I had three days to back out of the contract. I also was promised two training session a week by an employee who led me to believe that he was the manager and then he skipped town. It was then that I found out that the real manager was a guy who lets his trainers do whatever they want, as long as they get sales. I went to ask to be let out of the contract because of "false advertising." The manager refused and told me I was immoral to try to get more than I pay for. I'm going to fight this tooth and nail. And if you're going to a class action suit, count me in.

LA Fitness International discriminate toward minority

Abuse of power. Mislead people to sign the contract. Poor management. Unfriendly environment.

My membership at LA Fitness is little over 2 years. I finally canceled it for couple reasons:
- Misjudgment, ignorant. This lead to discriminating
- Overused of power
- Mismanagement of facility. There’s no common rule for clients
- Poor maintenance of equipments
- Noises. When 315 lbs being drop on the floor next to you not once but almost every day
-Staff members side with the ‘Noises’ and make fun out of it
