LA Fitness International dirty and poorly run club

The club is constently dirty in the morning (dust, garbage, paper towels) on the floor. There are "dust bunnies that are noticeable around the machines and in the spinning class. There is 1 cleaning person that is supposed to be cleaning but on numerous occasions can not be found cleaning. The locker rooms are disgusting. There is garbage left out as well as mold growing in the showers. There have been at least 3 times that the club has been without paper towels throughout the entire club. They were not filled for a couple days. Lastly the front door to the club has been broke for quite some time. This is a safety concern seeing that there is only one person who opens the club up in the morning (a female) The club has taken to long to act on these matters. If there is anyone who asks me of a fitness club that is good and that would be beneficial for them to join-IT WONT BE LA FITNESS!

I've been a member of the LA Fitness on skillman and walnuthill now since it opened and I have noticed over the past six month's that the gym has been declining in quality. It's mostly due to the lack of respect for other people working out. Example. Put you weights back after using them. Wipe your sweat off the bench that has been used. If these two simple acts would be enforced I'm sure the quality would go up.

LA Fitness International la fitness - horrible service/out for your money

Please provide any legal advice you may have regarding the matter below; your help is much appreciated!

I recently signed up for the personal trainer's program and had every intention of going through with it but…

On the day of my first scheduled session I received a text message from my trainer cancelling our appointment due to personal family reasons promising that “this never happens” and to meet at our next scheduled session. Yet on the day of my second session he texted again this time telling me he's been moved to another location asking me to meet him there instead. After telling him it's too far for me he texted me back saying that another training manager will call me and she'll take care of me at my current club. I ended up having to call her that day (taking time out of my job) because I didn't hear from her then ended up worked out on my own anyway (I also learned she takes a 4-hours break each day so don’t expect a call between noon and 4pm). After my work out I decided this unreliability is ridiculous from a professional business especially since I haven’t even officially started my sessions and questioned how they made a profit (which I now learn through all these complaints is by making it as difficult as possible for their members to cancel memberships). I called into the club that night asking to opt out of the program and thought since I haven’t even used it yet and I’m already unsatisfied with the service it’s not a problem (Ha!). At least the person I spoke with was understanding and polite about it but he said “I wish I can press the cancel button for you because you have a legitimate complaint but today is the fourth day from your initial start date and you can only cancel THREE days from the start without any problems”. He promised to forward my complaint over to another manager who will get back with me regarding the matter.

I received a call the next day but she had no clue. After I repeated my story to her she gave me the same “three days to cancel” spiel and offered to sign me up with another trainer. I wanted to scream “your product is broken before I’ve even used it; I don’t want to try using it; I wish to return it; the grocery store allows returns for up to 30 days, why don’t you?” but asked to speak to someone else. Well the next manager must also be a programmed robot because he said the same thing and this time I did say what I was thinking. I have since changed my bank card number and waiting for yet another manager to get back to me. I’m now stuck between going through with a terrible program with unreliable service within a company that run scams or cancelling it at a 50% cost to me which is $750 for something that I haven’t even used!

Does anyone have any legal advice on how I can get out of the program? Please help!

I remember when I visited the gym near me, I wanted to check out the prices. I knew I was going to sign up there because there are no other gyms around where I live. I was not able to sign the contract and pay because I was on my lunch break. But when I told the sales associate that I would be back later, he seriously went crazy. He was getting visibly upset that I would not sign right at that moment and was saying anything he could think of to get me to sign. It was a little unappealing to say the least, however seeing him get so aggravated was somewhat humorous. When I came back, he was obviously very surprised and of course very nice. After that it was like I did not exsist. Nice.

Then I was not sure about signing up for PT. The guy doing the selling also started getting visibly upset and continued to insult me and say that I obviously did not care about my health if I didn't sign up.

Speaking of the PT sales rep. All I know is that his name was Louis and he worked at the South Elgin, IL gym. Anyone know his last name, please let me know.

LA Fitness International misleading, sneaky, can't cancel!

Without getting into dated LONG detail, since I don't have the energy to explain from the beginning, I will give in a nutshell. If there is a problem at all, memebership or training, good luck on getting it fixed. I had a problem with a charge for my membership (to a wrong credit card) - no one could help me. The gym manager was never available, and when I did reach him, I was promised a credit I never received. Then it started with signing up for personal training. The "training manager" did not completely explain IMPORTANT details regarding the training sessions, such as THEY ARE ONLY 30 MINUTES (I have always had training for one hour sessions) and that the training charges to your credit card or bank account KEEP ON CHARGING YOU forever until you physically write LA Fitness a letter to California telling them to stop! Had I known about how much I was paying only included 30 minutes sessions, I would have never bought the training. They are not competitively priced in that area, and that's probably why he didn't mention that! On top of that, I was promised FREE sessions for signing up, since I bought so many, and since the original quote I had he could not honor when I went to sign up - the so called "deal" had changed. I was promised 12 free sessions, which I had to literally chase down this manager forever to ask about my free sessions so I could get them! No one could help me. He was often not there. I left messages. I think after a long annoying while I got a few free sessions after nagging him so many times, and I most certainly know for sure I didn't get the 12 I was promised. Getting ANYTHING done at LA Fitness is a joke. Everything is "corporate". If you call corporate, they tell you to call the local gym. If you call the local gym, they blame everything on corporate. If you want to cancel your membership, you can't simply cancel it at the gym. You have to write "corporate". You better get it certified mail, or be sure they will say they didn't get it. You can't send them an email OR leave a voicemail for anyone. They make it practically impossible to deal with any situation at their corporate office, and make it as inconvenient as possible, I'm assuming so that they can squeeze in an extra month or two of charging you for a membership. If you actually do get ahold of a receptionist there - GOOD LUCK! They are short, rude, and no matter what you say them, they throw in the "on hold" loop. In the decades I have been working out, and have also worked at health clubs, I have never witnessed such a club with poor customer service. I have no idea why they are as big as they are, except maybe for cheap memberships. Talk about getting the run around...
I am still a member there but won't be for long. Just waiting for my training to run out. Just beware...you have to ask A LOT of questions and get details, because they won't tell any of this hassle information when you sign up. Of course, they want your money first. I will say though that many of the staff people are fine and friendly. The front desk people in general are ok but not very friendly or ask any questions or make any conversation - they just bar code you in and that's it. I guess that's the difference between a corporate gym and a training gym...live and learn.

I purchased a three year membership for my son. His schedule changed which put him working out at the busiest time. He said it was ridiculous he was waiting in line to work out, over crowded on every machine. The salesperson told me which I purchased the three year membership that I could cancel at ANYTIME and I would be given a credit on any unused months. I notified corporate and they said I would need to contact my local LA Fitness in Keller. Corporate and the local office have done ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING! Would not offer any suggestions other than unless my child became unable to work out due to injury or he moved 10 miles from a LA Fitness that they would then reimburse me. REALLY! The Keller location is full of people that do not have knowledge of what they are selling, they lie to their potential customers to get them to sign up. I would not recommend anyone supporting LA Fitness. It's all about raking in the money and not caring if the machines are available to work out on.

Cancellation is simple

1. Walk into your local LA Fitness and pick up the form, or go online, no questions asked, and mail it in 10 days prior to your next billing (why? So they have time to stop the auto eft) It's self addressed and ready to go

2. You'll receive an email within 5-7 days confirming its cancelled

3. Your done

LA Fitness International awful experience

I went in to sign up for L.A. Fitness because my husbands work were advertising them and saying that I could have my starting fee waved and 15% off every month.

When I went there, they said that my husband's work did not qualify at that time and I needed to notify them to tell them that their agreement with L.A. Fitness was expired. But before I could leave, the lady said she still wanted to help me get into the club. She said, 'How about I get you in for half off?' I told her it was my son's birthday and I could not afford anything because I was purchasing a Wii and some games for him. She said, 'Why not give him the best gift? A healthy mommy?' Needless to say, she guilted me into starting up a membership.

She did not explain to me what she would be charging my card for and it ended up costing me a total of $119.98 (79.99 to start and 39.99 for first month). I went into the club the next day to work out and saw a HUGE sign that said, 'Sign up now for only $29.00'! I went and asked the lady, who signed me up, what was with the sign. She told me that it was a new promotion that had just started that day! I was so mad. She new I was strapped for cash and yet she could not tell me to wait one day so I could save $50.00!

On top of that, the physical trainers bug you ALL the time about setting up time with them to work out. However, there is a catch...they charge $60.00 for 1/2 hour! And they always recommend 3 hours a week! I bet they do; they want that $360.00 a week from you.

I had a death in the family and canceled with them. I had to go out of town for a long time, and even though they called me 3 times a week to beg me back, they new I was gone and since I did not have a contract, I could quit at any time. When the next billing cycle came around, they CHARGED MY CARD! I called them and they would not do anything! I called my bank and my bank put a stop for them to charge my card again but said I was out the 39.99!

So now they cannot charge my card but are sending me to collections because I stopped paying my monthly fee; even though was under NO contract and could quit at anytime!

They are scammers and liars; greedy as hell! Stay away!

LA Fitness International took my money without my consent

I signed up for personal training at LAFITNESS in Rowlett TX. After and injury in October 2008 I had to cancel. I was willing to follow through with them charging half my remaining balance. Yet every month since they have been taking the regular fee of 160/month out of my checking account. I spoke and visited with them in November and December when I received no satisfaction. Finally they took the last payment out in January, but that would have been my final payment anyway. They still have yet to refund money. This to me is Fraud!

LA Fitnss has taken unauthorized charges from my account as well. I have a high risk pregnancy. I've almost had a miscarraige, and therfore could not continue with the personal trainer. I followed all of the proceedures to cancel my personal trainer. The gym staff member I spoke with said that my card would be charged the $180.00 for the next month and that would be it. Last night I looked at my online banking statements and found that they not only charged for the month they said they would but also 2 additional months . They even charged twice for one month. I was so upset that I cancelled my credit card. I tried to go on their website to cancel my gym membership as well but there is always an error message stating that I can not acess it at the time. I am so upset about La Fitness.

LA Fitness International rip off!

I quit LA Fitness to join a different health club.

I submitted my formal letter to end my contract and about a month later received a letter of acknowledgment that they would agree to withdrawal my membership and stop my monthly charges. That was March '08. I just noticed that they are still withdrawing $26 from my account.

I didn't save the letter they sent me. Now I'm wondering how I will get proof of when I ended my contract. What can I do?

They owe me and many others. These scams need to stop. It's fraud!

LA Fitness International why you should not get a trainer at la fitness in downey

This is yet another complaint against lafitness in downey, california.

*the trainer manager at lafitness in downey says things and doesnt come through with them.

*the office personnel (management) seem to be more focused on office gossip and politics rather than client satisfaction.

*you dont get your money's worth there because of the distractions caused by the office personnel.

*this gym is distasteful and unprofessional. they dont care about their clients there. I have been hoping that my trainer transfer to another lafitness location for the last six months so that we can continue the fitness routines.

LA Fitness International very bad service

I have beeen going to this gym for about 6 months and when they signed me up, I was signed up with my son who at the time was only 12 years old. Which i told the guy at the time of signing up and it was the only reason why I was trying to with him because he was getting out of shape. The guy said it was fine but just say he was 14 years old I thought nothing of it and went along with it, but the lack of service and helpfullness in this gym my son got hurt in the cycling room by one of the bikes. They made me fill out an accident report and that was the end of . Now 4 months later they are saying the my son can no longer go there because he is to young and was not supose to be going there at all. The manager that was working handled it very wrong and it was a big scene in the gym. He didn't handle the problem he just kept walking away from me saying he will look into it and call me another time instead of just solving the problem. I will not reccommend this gym to anyone the people are rude there and you do not feel welcome there at all.

I am going to LA Fitness since it open in worden and England .
Today I asked a question about one Machine from one of their trainer
And he didn't answer it because he had a client that paid him and was waiting
For him. Even for one question you have to pay them to answer it. Which is not
right. The first place they will try hard to get in people in the gym and after they don't
Care about you. Well I am really disappointed today.
Very bad service.

I purchased a year of personal training sessions for $40 each week. I only get 25 minutes for $40 which is fine but my trainer never starts on time but always finishes on time. I have to wait fofor him to eat a power bar or make phone calls and it's eating up almost $2 per minute. Management needs to train their employees to start on time! I will not renew my sessions at the end if the year.

I totally understand and relate on the service at that specific club. I'm not going to mention my name fully just because we are still members and don't want to have anymore problems with them. When we signed up, it was with Derrick. We went in to just ask questions about the club. We were looking into a family plan for all of us to join. We have a 20, 19 and 14 y.o. twins that were to join up w/us also. He painted such a great picture of the gym. He said that we could all go w/o any problems and that we were all going to have the same monthly rate, if we referred anyone else to the gym that they'd also rcv the same price we were paying, if we wanted to stop going all we had to do was let them know, if we wanted to take someone off of our account and replace them w/someone else at the same rate we could and also mentioned that our account would be compensated for signing referring people to our gym. He also said that those being referred by us would also be signed up w/the rate that we were paying. NONE OF THAT HAPPENED! When I signed my family & myself up, there were 5 of us. So, when tried to replace someone on my account w/a different person, he then said that it couldn't happen. He said that we could remove them and add someone else BUT, they'd have to be added w/the new, more expensive rates that were going. When we referred 4 different friends of ours, all we went back and asked why our account was never compensated accordingly. Derrick's response was, "I never said that your account would be compensated!" He then offered us a lanyard as compensation for referring everyone. THEN! Had the nerve to NOT give the people WE REFERRED, the same price! After we had told them they'd rcv the same price because that's what DERRICK told us. WE WERE NOT HAPPY! AND STILL AREN'T. The only damn reason we stay there is because it's the only gym that we know of that has a pool. So, as of today, everyone else have dropped their memberships and we are only 2 left remaining in the gym. And yes, the service sucks. Not just saying that to complain, but...it's true. The guys that were there last were more worried about the chics in the gym then attending & greeting us at the desk. We walked in and no one was at the front counter. We had wanted to ask a question re:our account info and never spoke to anyone because no one ever went to the desk the 1hr & 1/2 we were there. As we were leaving we saw someone blond guy w/pimples talking to a girl. nice job guys! and the women's b/rm is always disgusting! The scales are out dated and there should be better representation. There should be people who know what they're talking about and lie to people just to get them to sign up.

This is the Worst club I have ever joined. Customer service is rude and uneducated. They do not solve complaints and no one takes responsibility for being in charge of the facility. The group exercise classes on the evenings and weekends run 50% of the time. The other 50% the instructor doesn't show up to teach the class. Join at your own risk because if you wish to cancel, for being treated rudely and not getting services promised, you already paid a hefty registration fee in addition to monthly dues. If you call corporate to complain about the conditions of the club they "apologize" and then state that they cannot contact someone locally to address your concerns or give you a refund.

First of all- you should not have let your underage son work out there in the first place. This person who signed you us was wrong to break the rules but so were you. It seems to me you were both at fault. However at the end of the day, as the mother, you should have been more sensible.

As for the person speaking on behalf of LA Fitness, are you a representative of the center, if so, not a professional one or good one for that matter First you do not bad mouth others when you don't even know if this person "Ed" was the individual who helped this woman. You should have just apologized and left it at that. I recently joined the Bristol location and so far I found the staff to be very professional, understanding and helpful. Kudos to Derek and Jeremy.

On behalf of LA Fitness I apoligize for the incompetance that is our Bristol Location. I'm guessing you dealt with ED (Otherwise known as ### to our members). Each club is run differently and Bristol is one of the worst. I'm not suggesting you to come check out a different team or club, as I'm sure your experience with us would prevent that. I would like to stress that the other clubs in your area, S.Windsor, Newington, are actually staffed by people who care about their jobs. Some of us do actually go the extra mile for our member's do not pressure our appointments and are still very succesful within this company. I truly apoligize for what happened to your son and wish your family the best. Unfortunately I can not post my name or title for obvious reasons. It just saddens me that in some locations the best we can offer our members is a team of shady used car salesmen.

LA Fitness International awful place

My complaint is probably a common one, but it is about the personal training staff, and greeters at LA Fitness. The last time I checked, when a customer comes in to your place of business, you are to be greeted. When I walked in, there were two grumpy middle-aged women, who would probably die before they could utter the word 'hello, ' or even worse 'how are you today?' Then there are the personal trainers.

When I signed up for the gym, I was encouraged to sign up for my 'free' fitness assessment. The word free couldn't be further from the truth. From the moment I met my trainer/sales person, I was immediately pushed to sign up for personal training. I had to use their BMI device, and was told to immediately hand the device over to them when the numbers show up.

My personal opinion was that they bump up those numbers before telling you what they are. This way you'll think you're in worse shape, and be more inclined to sign up. My fitness assessment lasted 45 minutes, 30 of those were spent being pitched certain training packages. Finally, I'd had enough and told the trainer that this wasn't for me.

The next day I came in, and right in the middle of my workout, I was once again approached by the personal trainer, and pitched to sign up again. I guess no, no longer means no? This is a great gym. The atmosphere is good and the equipment is current. Just make sure to stay away from the personal trainers. They're obnoxious. Especially DREW.

I have been a La fitness member for over ten years. I ignore them (Trainers) when any of them try to talk to me. I know I few poeple where it didn't go so well. Refering to other complaints Listed to this board and for them personaly. I all so noticed at the club that I do workout alot at. That the sales and trainers come and out about every 90 days. I have some try to talk to last Dec. and by the end of March they are gone. And as of this writing. I noticed this one trainer that made it a habit to shake almost everybodys hand and talk to members is now nowhere to be seen. I noticed this person The first of April now as of this date May 14, 2010 I haven't seen this person for a week. I also agree about the personnel at the front desk. Most of them act as if they could careless that you walk thur the door. I noticed that if they do treat some members with smiles and good day or how are you doing? However when I go they Am lucky if I get the time of day. I aslo belong to 24 hour fitness the personnel there Greet everyone with a smile and call everyone by their first name and even tell you to enjoy your workout and the trainer over don't bother me there as well. I been a member of 24 Hour Fitness sice 1993. La fitness the first time 1994 to 1999 . Now 1999 to present In 1999 I let my membership Lapse for 3 months.

I completely agree with the above. Personal trainers there are trained to persuade you into signing up for classes. oh and guess what, they have a special this week, only 25 dollars per session, which is 99.9% off the regular price. I mean my god they just wouldn't stop annoying me and try to get me to sign up.
Even when I brought my brother in for a 1 week free trial membership, we spent 30 minutes just trying to tell the dude that we only want to try the place out for a week, and then we will decide to pay or not. that's that the coupon said, but after being annoyed every 2 monutes and pushed to signup my brother into a full membership, we abandoned this "free" 1 week of triaining.
the bottom line is its a good gym but stay away from the staff and personal trainers who try to suck monry out of you. Just say NO . its not rude, its straightforward "NO get away from me please"

LA Fitness International lack of machine maintenance

There are only 4 Stairmasters at the Hazel Del, WA LA. Fitness. During peak times they are all in use with a waiting line. Other parts of the gym (free weights) are almost always empty.

About 2 weeks ago one of the machines was tagged as out of order. I looked at the machine and noticed the power cord was missing a prong. This made the line much longer and a few of the more stupid customers were trying to plug it in with the one prong expecting it to work.

I mentioned this to the staff. "Nothing we can do about it." was the reply. "We'll leave a note for the operations manager." I advised them this is now a safety issue. Wide eyed bewilderment.

Another week has now gone by. Still no one can manage to figure out how to change a plug.

This for $80.00 a month.

LA Fitness International inapproriate staff and gossip

*There is no sanitary paper or toilet paper in the mens restrooms on any toilet on occassions you have to walk to the carls junior accross the parking lot to use the restrooms.

*It gets so packed that there is no parking on certain days and your car can get towed.

*Several of the Running and cycling machines dont work and you have to stand in line to use the good ones and the weights.

*My credit card was charged before I even signed anything or agreed. I told my trainer I wanted to add a third sessions for the month of january and february and he referred me to his head trainer manager. This trainer manager and another one of her trainers spent about 30 minutes trying to convince me that the adding a third session by no means meant renewing your contract for another year. It does if you change your contract you renew it. They shouldnt lie. It took another 15 minutes for them to tell me that the sessions can be canceled within a week after they were afraid of getting sued for fraud. I JUST WANTED TO ADD A 3 DAY TO THE WORKOUT FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY AND FEBRUARY NOT FIGHT FOR THE TRUTH.

*This gym is very ghetto you have to be on the look out for your car to get stolen or damaged.

*There is heavy gossip amongst staff trainers and the head training manager at this downey facility regarding clients sexual preference and physical traits. Some of the trainers in a group walk around and blatantly talk trash about clients physical apperance and sexual preference and this manager does nothing. She only does something if it is in her interest. This is inappropriate because clients are paying for this. She should be fired also.

*Im canceling this gym for these reasons.

I am a member to the LA fitness gym and have visited other locations and it is as if they hire off of the same criteria. the trainers hunt you down when you are working out and made me feel uncomfortable. The staff at the Downey location needs to either go to training on how to treat people or fired and hire new staff that enjoy their job. The staff is unprofessional this is from the manager down to the reception desk staff. They charged me for a guest pass just because I did not print one out or called them a day in advance to let them know! I have been a member since 2006 and this is the way a returning customer is treated that is not right but hey they do love to take your money that is when they are friendly.

LA Fitness International over charge after discontinuing

I had membership for me and my wife from Dec 2007 to Aug 2008. We did not use it even for a single day. I personally went to the club in August 2008 and talked to the receptionist (African American Gentleman) who said my membership was d/c ed from August 2008. I dicontinued auto payments from my HSA. Later on I get a call from collections that I owe them money for membership after august 2008. Manager at club was not willing to listen to me or the people on the phone of no use. Harrasment by LA Fitness collections continue. LA Fitness does not take responsibility for their employee mis information on the discontinuing process. Meanwhile the harrassment for payment continues. THEY ARE GREAT RIP OFF ARTISTS.

I absolutely agree that LA Fitness tries to squeeze out money from the customers when they want to cancel their membership. In my case, I wanted to cancel my membership in January 2009. However, when I called the customer representative coerced me to keep my account on hold for 3 months and see how I feel about it during that time. I agreed to what seemed like a courteous and a generous offer. But I was charged for the month of January and February. When I saw the two charges I quickly called the facility and they refunded me back the money only for the month of February saying that I had used the facility on ONE day of January so that fee was right on their part. I agreed reluctantly and didn't take any action against this fee. I was offered a hold for 03/10/09 - 06/10/09. AGAIN I was charged for 05/10/09 and 06/10/09. When I called this time they said, "Well you were given a 3 month hold so since you were given back the money for February, you had to be automatically charged for May." I explained to them SEVERAL times that I have this CONFIRMATION provided to me which is in my email which states I wouldn't be charged until June. But nobody listened! They are a bunch of frauds and there are no other words I have for them.

LA Fitness International - rip off

I recently bought a membership for my wife for her birthday at LA Fitness. We went together and signed her up. They gave us a pretty good deal, (cut the membership fee down and threw in childcare), plus we could cancel anytime and I could go and try out the facilities for a couple of weeks myself. Everything seemed to be ok. Then the very next day my wife...

LA Fitness International problem cancelling membership

I joined la fitness while facility was under construction, attended for a few months, was injured there and decided to stop going.
I handed a note to one of the managers at the club, telling them i no longer would be attending the facility.
They keep calling looking for payment on a cancelled membership.
This group ignores cancellations.
Health and fitness clubs need some serious regulations, country wide, and particularly in massachusettsc7ace

I honestly wish it were possible to give this gym a lower rated review. I signed up with the gym a few months ago and with signing up you receive a free personal training assessment. After the personal training assessment, I was pressured into signing up for additional sessions in order to better learn the machines. I asked multiple times if it would be able to cancel these sessions because I have had multiple knee surgeries and have chronic pain. I was told by the 2 "Master Trainers" that I signed with that I could cancel at anytime without a problem as long as I called in before the first of the month. Well, fast forward 3 months, and I'm calling in to cancel because I am in so much pain after these sessions that I have trouble walking for multiple days after. I'm told that the only way to get out of this contract is to pay $900 or obtain a note from a physician stating that I have a disability from the front desk associate. I called corporate customer service twice. The first time I was hung up on and the second time I spoke with a "supervisor" who was supposed to call me back. I never received a callback and called my local gym to get the hours that the Operations Manager would be in. I go in 3 times within this time frame and not only am I informed that the man who I signed up with is no longer with the company, I am also told each time that he is not at the facility, The only times this manager is there are Monday through Friday 9-5. Because I have a job, I had to take off from work to come to the facility 3 times. Even though I was lied to by the people selling me the personal training, I was still told the only way out of contract was to obtain a doctor's note. I did and took it to them. They said that they would scan it in and get it cancelled next day. I get a call later stating that they are unable to do this and I need to mail this cancellation to the corporate office. I have just now managed to get this training cancelled and it took going all the way up the ranks to their Regional VP. The absolute worst customer service that I've ever experienced.

LA Fitness International various difficulties

I had trouble cancelling my membership as well -- they really have a scam going to get the most money they can out of people. Yet, when I go to the Better Business Bureau I see they have a satisfactory rating. Everyone who has complained here should send in complaints to the Better Business Bureau.

This LA Fitness location has horrible customer service. It's a shame the manager Jen hasn't been through a Ritz Carlton class on customer service because this place could be run so much better. As a 5+ year member, I called to try and swap out one of my kids on my family plan since they only let me put 4 of the 5 of us on it in the first place. My oldest is out of the area and can't use the facility. The answer was NO changes. So in the end, they chose to lost the $75+ a month I was paying by having me quit, which makes no business sense whatsoever, especially with the costs of acquiring new members. NO one seems to care and Jen just says, "feel free to call corporate, I'm on the regional committee so I'll get it." So confrontational by implying 'it's not going to do you any good.' Hey, as a business owner I'm just trying to help out your poor policies. It's one thing to scam LA Fitness and try to add a friend to a family plan, but quit another to drop/add a family member who can never use the facility.

LA Fitness International rude manager

Tony Hicks is the Training General Manager at the LA Fitness in Everett, Washington. He was a nice guy until I made the decision to cancel my personal training deal the very next day.

Don't be knocked by this guy's smooth talking. First of all, when I asked for a couple days to think about the offer, he started pressuring me. The good thing is that even though I signed the contract, I had three days to cancel the contract without charge. After some thinking, I personally went in the fitness center to cancel. He tried to talk me out of it, saying the rates would go up next month and that he could freeze my account at any time, but when I still told him no, he went on to insult me. He made false accusations saying that my friends led me up to cancelling and what's worse is that he said three months from now I'm going to wish I didn't cancel because I'm going to weigh the same. I mean, this guy thinks he is God, he thinks people really need him like that.

Every other employee I've ran into has been nice, this guy is, too, but reject him and his offers and be ready to be insulted and talked down to.

My advice is that if somebody comes to you offering a deal and they keep telling you the offer is only for that particular day, it's a scam. This guy is a scammer.

I aslo was pressured into a personal training member ship and now am stuck for a year. The only way they say I can cancell is by paying a lump sum of money, which I think is BS. I want to ONLY have membership. But it seems they pressure you into signing up, and at a few of the clubs I workout in the staff has been no help when I havea question about a machine, unless I work out at my "home club, " which is far from my home now. I am NOT impressed with LA Fitneess and have let all my friends know through emails, test messages, linked in, myspace and any groups I belong to.

LA Fitness International poor customer service and management

I have a personal training membership... yes, I know now. The first six months on the one year contract went well. As I watched management and personal trainers come and go. Within the first six months I had (5) five different trainers because LA Fitness has a high turnover rate. Lack of management and customer service in trying to keep the customer happy and give you what you paid for. The last three months I have been charged for personal training but have been unable to get anyone to book time with. After three months of calling and coming into the gym weekly hunting for the trainer I was working with... whom "was just here" or "he went to get dinner and will be back in a minute" I chose to cancel my (1) one year personal training contract. Mind you that I had already used 6 months and paid for 3 which I had not been trained for. The manager tried to get me too just train with someone else. I explained that after three months and getting my chain jerked around I had a bad taste in my mouth and just wanted out of the contract. He then started in with the insults, "You do not care enough about my body to want to improve it" and "if you get out of the contract you owe 50% of what is left of the contract do you have that kind of money to throw away?"...

I am not the brightest color in the box (but with a grin I do my homework well). I figure with (3) months left on my contract at (3) times per month that would be (9) times $25.00 per each session or $225.00 /2 = $112.50. I owe LA Fitness $112.50.
Cool, mister manager (Mat Miles), now I would like you to remeburse me for the past (3) months that you took money from me and did not provide me with a service... That would be $225.00 dollars. Funny how now me throwing away money does not seem to ring true cause now your paying me.
He jumped up from behind his desk walked away and called his boss to try to figure out what to do. He came back and told me I would have to return (when another guy was there) for them to do a buy out of my contract.
The gym is nice, most of the customers there are nice, a few of the trainers are great... the management and the rest of them need to get back in touch with a little customer service because with the times the way they are... they will be lucky to get new people to train. I will never use personal trainers again from this place and might even wear a t-shirt to work out in explaining why I feel this way.
Wake up and work on your CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS... we are the ones paying your bills. Once you have scammed the community all you can do is shut down and move on... so get right and stay or get ready to move.

Well they got me, LA Fitness does not pay you for unused sessions (credits) - use them or lose them is what I was told. will never use a personal trainer or look at LA Fitness in the same light. Once they have you sign on the dotted line out the door goes the customer service and here comes the scams and insults. best of luck to anyone that falls in to this trap. i wish there was some way of changing the policies of LA Fitness.

I joined the South Windsor LA Fitness with great optimism a few months back. As one might expect, when you first join a gym you are overly excited at the prospect of getting in shape/healthy, and tend to overlook some of the finer points. Well, here I am more than six months later, cursing myself for not being more observant when I first enrolled. While I have lost 12 pounds, I credit it to having the best Exercise Companion to help motivate me.

At this point, I am 100% certain they are going to mysteriously shut their doors one day and walk away with my deposit money. Here is what I have observed:

-> Most of the equipment is broken or in disrepair. For example, the padding on most machines is torn or worn through, making it very uncomfortable during certain exercises. Additionally, the pins used to select the weight on a number of machines are missing, so you can only do 20 pounds (the minimum weight).

-> Look at the ceiling in the atrium/lobby area. There is excessive water damage with apparent mold/fungus. I worry that people are mistakenly thinking their wheezes are from a heavy workout – when it could be from breathing toxic air.

-> The temperature in the Cardio area is exceptionally hot. As an experiment, I brought a thermometer and recorded an amazing 87 degrees. They have one fan to cool the area and it is completely encased in dust.

-> They removed most of the paper towel dispensers and alcohol solution. At one point these were conveniently located throughout the facility. Now, you would be lucky to find a towel to even clean your machine after use.

-> The music is exceptionally loud. Sometimes, it is so loud that I can’t even hear the person on the treadmill next to me.

Overall, this place just seems to be going downhill quick. It is not clear whether management is really interested in maintaining the facility. They really need to wake up and take care of their current members.

LA Fitness International overcharged

We 'pre-joined' la fitness boca raton on may 2008 and the gym was scheduled to be opened later on october/november. the sales person oscar told us we will get a 'pre membership' deal, and that there won't be never a lower monthly price we are getting now signing up in advance. sounded good and fear and we trusted what he said.

Well now in november I sent 3 people to sign up to the gym. la fitness is now offering even lower monthly fees so what la fitness and oscar told me on may was a lie. I called oscar and the only he could say was that they can upgrade the fees but not donwgrade and he is sorry my 'pre-deal' was higher. I told him he lied and it's not good business practice. he just said cancel your membership if you want, but it is what it is. the money is not gonna kill me, but the the disrespect I received from him was unacceptable so we will cancel our memberships and also switch the other people to another gym in the area.

My husband and I joined LA Fitness and then we got him the Body of Change membership, which is their personal trainer thing. Well, he was given a new trainer every time and then, the last trainer of his got fired and no one ever called anc scheduled sessions for him.

Meanwhile they continued taking out $100 a month for the membership and the service they were not delivering. We even called and complained about the service, The customer service person said they will handle it and scheduled a session for us. When we showed up, nobody knew we were coming and there was no one to do the training session.

At the end they made us pay a $500 cancellation fee for over 6 months of undelivered service.

They are criminal and deliver none of what they promise. Please let everyone know - DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICES, THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF !

I had signed up for a years worth of personal training at the Boca Raton LA Fitness facility. Tony, one of the managers at the gym had made an appointment for me with one of his trainers for a Friday evening two weeks in advance. The week I was supposed to train the trainer called me and said he had switched my appoint because he has a client who likes to train during that time and that he moved me to Tuesday of the following week. All of that was done without ever consulting me first. When asked to speak with Tony I was told he was not available so I called back later that day and asked to speak with Tony again, of course he was still not available. I left a message which, surprise, was never returned.

I have been going to gyms since I was 13 and needed a trainer to help me while I recovered from a sports injury. I used to be a personal trainer myself and I know what professional training takes. I had one trainer at the LA Fitness in Boca Raton who decided to have a conversation with someone he knew from a previous job across the tricep pushdown cables while I was in the middle of my set. He was not paying attention to my form making sure that I was doing the exercise correctly to prevent injury and to optimize my results. That gym does not have one personal trainer with the knowledge, experience, or professional attitude to call themselves trainers.

LA Fitness is the most unprofessional fitness club in the history of the health club industry.

LA Fitness International misleading, deceptive, hassle, harassment

I am writing to register a formal complaint against several LA Fitness business practices encountered during my membership period. These include misleading terms, out-right lies, harassment, and inappropriate uses of personal data.

1. Free Trial Pass: When I arrived at a Tucson LA Fitness gym to use the free pass I’d printed from the website, I was required to sit with a sales representative for an “orientation” first. Before the representative would tell me anything about the gym, he tried to collect considerable personal information about me: name, date of birth, address, weight, age, health information. He also insisted that I sign a “release of liability” before he would give me a tour of the gym.

I refused to give the personal information, explaining that I knew nothing about the gym and was uncomfortable sharing this data until I knew more. I protested about the “release of liability” but was eventually coerced into signing it in order to find out any information about the gym.

The “Free Trial Pass” proved to be nothing more than an opportunity for the gym to give a lengthy sales pitch and collect personal data about me.

2. Membership Initiation: When I signed up for the membership, I was promised two “perks” that proved to be deceptive.

a. Free 2-week Pass for my son: On the first day that I arrived with my son to use this pass, I was told, “Actually, passes aren’t issued to children under the age of 18.” I responded that it was a condition of my membership initiation. I was told, “It is not possible.” My son was allowed to use the gym that day only.

b. Two free 60 minute sessions with a Trainer: These turned out to be sales pitches rather than training sessions. The person giving the “training” again tried to collect personal data, requiring me to stand on a scale. If this information were useful for training, I would have been more comfortable. I was uncomfortable because the information was only used to tailor the sales pitch. The actual training consisted of lifting a couple of free weights for about 10 minutes, with no commentary about proper form or purpose of the particular exercise.

3. Billing: Two family members and two friends joined the gym within a month of my initiation. For some reason, our records were linked in a way that could never be untangled. Under my account were listed my husband and one of my friends. My friends husband was listed separately on his own account. My son was listed under a third person. This meant that our credit card and payment information was scattered across all these accounts in the same way. So, I was billed for the friend listed on my account. And my son’s bill was sent to the third person. After several attempts to remedy this, the bills were eventually charged to the correct credit cards, but the record structure could not be altered.

4. Change of Payment: For about two weeks, I received calls from all over the country by people claiming to work for LA Fitness and asking me for new credit card information. Several times I told the callers, I will address this situation with my local gym because I am not willing to give credit card information over the phone. I asked them to please not call again.

The last person to call me identified herself as “from LA Fitness.” She said she had my account information in front of her. She asked if I’d recently had my credit card lost or stolen. I indicated that I would not reveal personal financial information over the phone and that I would sort out the issue with my local gym. I indicated that I’d been called several times about this and it was starting to feel like harassment. I asked her to please stop calling. She became belligerent and threatening. She said the calls would continue until the issue was resolved. After explaining repeating that I would not give her any credit card information over the phone, I eventually became exasperated and said, “Aright, I will resolve this issue right now. Please cancel my membership.” She refused. I repeated, “Please stop calling me, please cancel my membership.” And she continued threatening, “ The calls will not stop and you cannot cancel your membership over the phone.” Finally, I said, “I would like to file a formal complaint about this phone call, please tell me your name.” She immediately hung up on me.

Because this seemed so much like fraud or attempted identity theft, I sifted through my caller ID, found the phone number from which I’d been called: [protected]. Calling it, I repeated my request to know her name. She identified herself as “Keri” at a gym in California, but refused to give a last name. I asked to speak to her manager. She replied that she was the manager. I asked for the name of a supervisor, and she gave me the name of “Scott Legg.”

I went to my local gym to ask about all this. I sorted out the confusion about my credit card. The woman at my local gym explained that the LA Fitness computer system presents employees with the same call list and account information. Since they make calls from the same list, they cannot tell if a particular customer is receiving numerous calls at the same time.

5. Membership cancellation: The only way to cancel a membership, according to several employees and managers, is to go in person to a local gym, request a printed form, and mail it to a corporate office elsewhere. If the form is post-marked less than 20 days before the next billing cycle, the customer will be charged for another full month.

I was advised to send it registered mail. Apparently, it is common for LA Fitness to dispute the receipt of cancellation requests. By using registered mail, I would have proof that I’d sent it in.

In my opinion, going to the local gym and asking to cancel should be sufficient.

After all these difficulties, we decided to cancel our memberships with LA Fitness. The manner in which LA Fitness conducts business includes several practices which are deceptive, coercive, harassing, hassling, and uncomfortable, and in some cases cannot be distinguished from potential fraud. I felt that the company was primarily interested in extracting every possible dollar from me, and not very interested in providing me with a positive service. We would prefer to work with a company that conducts itself with integrity and that offers services that can be identified with accurate names.

I totally agree. I unforunatly work for LA, and I HATE this corporation to my bones. I wish I could change everything and make them realize that the customer is the person who needs to be treated royally, and who is always right. I HATE the manipulative, sneaky, grimy things they do in the sales dept. to get ppl to buy training. I love my profession, I love my clients and they love me, but if i had a way of getting out of LA fitness, i wouldnt even look back if it were on fire. Read my post please~

LA Fitness International membership cancellation

I went into the LA Fitness (Seattle /Aurora location) to cancel my membership in late September. They said they could not cancel it at that moment, but that I would have to submit a cancellation form (which they gave me) to their head office by snail mail. I objected and asked why I could not cancel immediately in person. They said it was their policy. I sent in the form and received no confirmation. When my Master Card bill arrived, I noticed that there was another charge dated October 4th. I decided to let it go, thinking that it took awhile to process the cancellation. In November, I checked my Master Card account online and saw that they had charged me again in November. I called the local office to complain and they said my cancellation had been post marked in mid October and because of some 20 day rule I was charged in November, but would not be charged again. On November 10th, I received an email stating that my cancellation had been received on November 5th. This time I called the head office and was told that my cancellation letter had been post marked on November 5th, the approximate day of my phone call to the local office. I told the rep that was a lie. She said they had a copy of my postmarked envelope and asked if I had sent my cancellation letter certified to prove that I had sent it in earlier. I said no, but if they could send me a copy of the postmarked envelope I would not contest the charge. She said she could not do that. I said that I would refuse to pay the charge and would file a complaint with M/C.

LA Fitness tells you the "ONLY" way you can cancel your membership is for you to physically go into the gym and they will print off cancellation forms, which you will have to mail out yourself. I sent my cancellations forms almost 2 weeks prior to having them take out the monthly gym fees. I felt this gave them enough time to cancel at its entirety BUT that didn't happen. I was so aggravated with the run arounds. I finally was able to get names/emails/numbers of individuals at LA Fitness headquarters who can make sure your membership is cancelled. I do have to say "Orlando Gonzalez" was extremely professional and very cordial. He immediately reassured my memberships would be cancelled AND he would make sure I was reimbursed for the monthly fee they had just taken out. Here is the information: Orlando Gonzalez [protected] orlandgog@lafitness.com and Aylin Medina (pronounced Eileen) [protected] aylinm@lafitness.com

I was a member of an LA Fitness in NJ for about a year. I have no complaints about the club itself. The facilites were always reasonably clean, the machines in working order and there were enough of them. I didn't take any classes or use a trainer. A gym is a gym. Some are a little nicer than others but you get what you pay for.

My complaint is about their cancellation policy. I understand that they want to make it as hard as possible so that they keep collecting your money. At their low membership fees that is a big part of how they make money. So, I am willing to jump through a few hoops to cancel in order to save a few bucks on fees. However the lengths they go to are almost comical.

First you have to download the form to cancel. Ok, not too bad. However their system doesn't support Mac! I had to go find another computer to print it out. Fill it out, as instructed and send it in. As the web site suggested I sent it registered/signature required. Knowing how they work I would have done this anyway. Well, two months later I get a call from them saying my credit card had expired and they needed it up dated because I owed them two months membership. I told them that I had cancelled. The woman on the phone tried everything she could think of to explain why it hadn't been processed;

- It may have gotten lost in the mail. I told her I had a reciept. Incredibly she reiterated that it might have gotten lost in the mail. I explained I had a reciept. She stammered that she meant it might have gotten lost in their internal mail. I explaind that that was not my problem. They had signed for it. As far as I was concerned they had it.
- Maybe I sent it the wrong way. You have to fill out the form fold it over and tape it shut. She explained that I must have put it in an envelop. If you do that apparently the monkeys that handle their mail are not able to sort it. I assured her, that knowing how they work, I had followed instructions to the letter.

She said I needed to show them the receipt. Unfortunately it was in my office so I had to wait until the next day. I call back and get some guy. he pulls up the account and notes that the account was cancelled as of yesterday. I still want credit. He says I'll have to bring in the reciept. I tell him there is not an LA Fitness near where I am. I don't have time to do that. Why can't I give him the tracking number and he can look on the USPS web site? Oh, we don't have internet access here. Oh thats right, the internet hasn't reached Irvine CA yet! According to him they can only access the LA Fitness web site. Then whats the point of the computer on everyone's desk? Ok, I'll email it. Oh we don't have email. Very retro they are. Lets try some 20th century technology: I'll fax it. He says I can't fax anything outside of the 714 area code. It takes a second to process this. I say, very slowly, I am faxing it to you. He says I know, but our fax is only local and will only accept faxes from 714! I asked if he understood how the phone system worked. Silence. Finally he transfered me to someone else. They finally took care of it. Of course I'll be checking my bills.

So, as far as gyms go it isn't bad but be prepared to fight them if you want to cancel.

One last thing: negotiate if you do sign up. I got them down from the $150 or so "initiation" fee to $110. My buddy went in a week later and simply said I'm not paying it and got them down to $60.00 and a reduced monthly. I think mine was $25 as was his.

I totally agree, my family and I have been with LA Fitness for the pass 2 months and we agree that the gym (facility ways) its great, the trainers are great, but the administration its TERRIBLE, they tell you one thing and after you sing up they come with something else, we specific ASKED if we can cancel the training at any time, the reason why its because one of us have a mental issues and he may need to get out from that agreement, beside that I told the Manager the same day that we sing up, my wife run out of job and we just want to try, at this point the Manager said to us ( sure you can try and see, and if you don't like it you can cancel at any time ) .
Today after almost 2 months we never got our diet change (they suppose change it after 2 week and then after 1 month) we also suppose to get a monthly assessment (check our weight, and measurements, ect.) and that never happened ...at this point we are F#@#@#@#...they take no time to take our money ($320 monthly) we ask to cancel the training and they said NO YOU CAN'T ...they are sooo sneaky and they lie to you just to get you in, after your are in, they don't care, they also try to take more money that they what suppose to take, also the told us that the monthly payment its $89 Dollars and after a month they come up and charge us $101 Dollars ...this its really stressful...we jut try to get healthy and take out some stress by going to the gym, now all this its killing us ...

i have been in the same situation, i cancelled my training member ship two months ago and still LA fitness is deducting the amount $240 from my account, and i have the cancelation confirmation email . when i informed at the my local GYM they said there is some changes in job and they don't know who is doing what at the corporate office and i have to wait for a week or so. Now today i see there is another deduction from my acct for $240. I don't understand how can these people suck the money and sleep peacefully . The best thing to do specially from LA fitness point is do not join the gym or else make the payment in cash or month to month else even if your dead LA fitness will charge you for working out at there GYM. LA fitness management sucks, i guess some [censored]ess monkeys are sitting at financial dept

This very thing happened to me last year. I cancelled my membership, and a month later was charged again. This happened for months, and when I contacted them about reimbursing me for the charges, they said that there was no way to check whether or not I had been using the club in the months after I had cancelled. I asked how that was even possible, technology being as advanced as it is, and their response was that when they log in to check your account, it registers as if I had checked in. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and the gal (who was actually pretty understanding) said that it's not possible to speak to a supervisor. That, in fact, if I attempted to contact the corporate office, that my call would be routed back to my home gym. Additionally, I wasn't even a member of LA Fitness. Originally, the gym was a Pure Fitness, and it was bought out by LA. So, they didn't even give us a contract to read, it was just taken over by them. One day I came in, and it was a completely different gym. They only asked if I wanted to continue to be a member. My trainer was still there, so I stayed. He left LA shortly thereafter, and I followed him to 24-hour, which is when I decided to cancel. I'm not sure how LA can get away with such sneaky business practices.

Always read LA Fitness contact in detail. I opt for the personal training sessions with them. The sales guy said that you can cancel/hold the account any time, but now I hear that I have to continue for the entire one year term. If I cancel I have to pay the 50% of the remaining session fees which would be in thousands. Again if I hold, I can do it for couple of months, but the contract end date would be extended accordingly. So there is no cancelation without huge cancelation fees, which they will not tell you anytime. Read the contract many times and don’t do the mistake I have made in a hurry. Getting good shape is every body’s dream, but I don’t like the fact that some people are using this normal spirit to do nasty money making business.

Same issue here...they say no contract and no cancellation fee when you sign up but in reality there is a fee because they will charge you for about 3 months of membership after you cancelled because apparently thats " How long it takes to processes the paper work". Its a lie and they should be sued for it.

I totally agree. I came into the club and spoke with 3 membership employees and specifically asked for help in 1) deciphering my contract and and 2) making sure I paid via Mastercard my last payment for a trainer package. All 3 of these guys confirmed that I was indeed finished paying this off. I confirmed several times with them that I would not be billed in November for this payment. And they all answered "yes." NOT one of them said I needed the 'cancellation' confirmation form off their computer NOR that I had to mail it in certified mail to the company. IF they had I would certainly had done that. When I saw another charge in November I came in upset that this had happened and then and only then did the person at the front desk tell me that I had to have this 'Cancellation' confirmation form from them and he said "I suggest you send it certified mail. " I later found out it HAD TO be mailed Certified mail. When I called the main LA fitness office and explained what had happened, they assured me that the manager, Jeremiah Johnson, the trainer membership manager would give me an refund. When I finally was able to get a hold of him and told him what happened, it basically called me a liar, that I hadn't talked to anyone because "they would surely have told me what I needed to do to cancel the membership." Finally, after trying to get a word in, he basically talked at me for 3 minutes, I came to find out that because I didn't specifically mention the 'magic word' "cancellation" the membership guys were under no obligation to tell me I need their special form to cancel and how to do it. Avoid this LA Fitness, and definitely avoid Jeremiah Johnson, he is a scammer and a con artist. I had thought about renewing with my trainer at LA Fitness, but after this, no way!
